Two years ago, after it bowed in cinema theaters in Spain, Alauda Ruiz de Azúa’s feature debut “Lullaby” was described by Pedro Almodóvar as “undoubtedly the best Spanish debut for years.” So the big question at a set visit last October was what she would make of her first TV series “Querer.” That set visit gave some inkling.

Now the full answer is out, as the premium mini series, selected out of competition at San Sebastián, screened to the press in the entirety of its 212 minutes on Thursday night.

That total screening is understandable. “Querer” begins with Miren, the wife in a seemingly perfect marriage in outward appearance, goes to a police station to accuse her husband over 30 years of sexual assault. Sílvia Abril Leads SkyShowtime’s ‘Mamen Mayo’

Sílvia Abril (Padre no Hay Más que Uno) has been cast to lead SkyShowtime drama series Mamen Mayo. She will play the title character act opposite fellow leads Pablo Capuz (Merlí. Sapere Aude), Mona Martínez (La Novia Gitana) and Clara Sans (Cardo). Abril’s character is billed as an “extremely intelligent inheritance mediator, who is at the pinnacle of her career.” She leads a team of mediators who in each episode attempt to resolve the conflicts of interest within families entangled in inheritance disputes. En “Querer”, la serie original de Movistar Plus+, tras 30 años de matrimonio y dos hijos en común, Miren abandona el domicilio conyugal y denuncia a su marido por violación continuada. Esta grave acusación obliga a los hijos a elegir entre creer a su madre o apoyar a un padre que defiende su inocencia. Zee-Sony Merger Back On Track

The merger of Zee Entertain Enterprises and Sony’s Indian arm looks to be back on track after an order banning Punit Goenka from managing the new entity was lifted yesterday. The merger of Zee and Culver Max Entertainment was given the go-ahead in August, but the merger has run into several problems. The India Securities and Exchange Board had barred Goenka and his father, Zee founder Subhash Chandra, from the boardrooms of listed companies for a year over allegations of insider trading. However, the Securities Appellate Tribunal has overturned that decision, paving the way for the $10B merger to go ahead and for Goenka to resume his role as MD and CEO of Zee. Sony and Zee have been planning the union for over two years now.

Driving into Spanish-language movies and series, Amazon Studios is hoping to repeat the success of “Argentina, 1985” with big Spanish period production “Hildegart,” starring Najwa Nimri and Alba Planas (“Skam España”), which wrapped production Aug. 19 in Madrid.

“Hildegart” has shot in the Spanish capital filming seven weeks and some days at historical heritage sites such as Spain’s Congress, Madrid’s Puerta del Sol central square, and its Atheneum.

Directed by Paula Ortiz, “Hildegart” is a fact-based tale of the extraordinary and tragic life of Spain’s Hildegart Rodríguez, born in 1914, a child prodigy raised by her mother to be a model for future women, who gave conferences on feminism and sexuality from the age of 11, writing on prostitution, contraception and eugenics – her monograph “Profilaxis anticoncepcional” sold 8,000 copies in one week just in Madrid – and accompanied H.G. Wells when he made a visit to Spain.

“Dating in Barcelona” has left to big ratings in Spain, both on its first window debut on Catalan public network TV3 and on Amazon’s Prime Video, where it bowed to become the streaming services most watched show.

Barcelona-based Filmax, the series production house, is now bringing the show to Conecta Fiction as one of its banner new offerings.

Written by Pau Freixas Èric Navarro, Ivan Mercadé, Clara Esparrach and Eduard Sola, it follows in the course of an episode two dates happening simultaneously in the city of Barcelona. The other day Variety provided an update on Amazon’s Prime Video film items in the works for the Spanish market and one project that sticks out (and would probably receive a festival premiere – perhaps a future San Sebastian berth) is Hildegart. Paula Ortiz is directing from a screenplay co-written by the prolific Clara Roquet (Libertad) and Eduard Sola.
