Image Comics “Juvenile”, available December 2025, is from filmmaker Jesus Orellana:
“…in a future where a deadly virus wipes out everyone upon reaching adulthood, teenagers are confined to massive medical facilities—until a mysterious new patient arrives and reveals a shocking secret.
“Sara’ is locked up in ‘El Castillo’, a fortress for troubled youth ruled with an iron fist by a retired military officer. Then everything changes with the arrival of a mysterious new patient who reveals a shocking secret: the virus isn’t killing them; it is giving them telekinetic abilities that the adults are desperately trying to suppress with medication and experimental surgeries.
“In a race against time, they decide to use their newfound powers to escape. But when the adults find out, they will discover that not only are their lives at stake, but also the fate of the human race…”

Fox has found a writer for the full length sci-fi film Rosa, based on a short film that left a great many impressed in the festival circuit. That writer is Will Dunn, who’s only credit is Ion, a spec script snapped up by Ridley Scott, according to Hollywood Reporter.
The original Rosa short was written and directed by Jesus Orellana from his home computer in Barcelona, and is described as ”an epic sci-fi short film that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where all natural life has disappeared. From the destruction awakes Rosa, a cyborg deployed from the Kernel project, mankind’s last attempt to restore the earth’s ecosystem. Rosa will soon learn that she is not the only entity that has awakened and must fight for her survival.”

Courtesy of Variety, news broke yesterday that newbie Will Dunn will be writing the live-action feature adaptation of Orellana‘s original short. Spanish comic book artist Jesus Orellana taught himself an animation program and made the short film with literally no budget! The short was shown at several festivals including the Seattle International Film Festival, then Sitges, Screamfest, Toronto After Dark, and many others, all to rave reviews. Something of a bidding war ensued before the project ultimately landed at 20th Century Fox. Synopsis:Rosa is “an epic sci-fi short film that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where all natural life has disappeared. From the destruction awakes Rosa, a cyborg deployed from the Kernel project, mankind’s last attempt to restore the earth’s ecosystem. Rosa will soon learn that she is not the only entity that has awakened and must fight for her survival.

Back in December, we reported that Jesus Orellana‘s short science fiction film, Rosa, was being made into a full fledged feature-length project. Now, thanks to some news via Variety, we’ve learned that Will Dunn will be writing the live-action feature adaptation of Orellana‘s original short.
Dunn is a member of the 20th Century Fox writing program and previously wrote Ion, which has Channing Tatum attached. The short was made from Orellana‘s home computer back in Barcelona and began gaining recognition back in November, which is when Fox quickly picked it up for a feature deal just a few weeks later.
The story takes place in a “post-apocalyptic world where all natural life has disappeared. A cyborg named Rosa rises from the destruction with the goal of restoring the planet’s ecosystem”. However, Rosa “must fight for her survival upon learning she’s not the only entity that has awakened.

We wouldn't dare neglect the selection of bite-sized cinema from around the world. Here are the Twitch contributors' favorite shorts and web series from 2011. Shorts Hope (Canada) Director: Pedro Pires by Todd Brown Though Jesus Orellana's Rosa is arguably the short of the year in terms of industry response and overall awareness--and for good reason, it's fantastic--i prefer Pedro Pires' Hope. The latest from the director of Danse Macabre is pure visual art, packed to the gills with gorgeous images and haunting emotional resonance. This man's a genius and needs to be turned loose on a feature now. Winner of the best short film Oscar in 2009 for Toyland, Jochen Alexander Freydank is currently prepping his first feature length project. According to THR, Freydank will adapt the rom-com best-seller Macho Man for Walt Disney Germany.
The film will be based off of Moritz Netenjakob‘s novel of the same name, which tells the story of a sensitive German man who attempts to be macho in order to land a sexy Turkish girl. Friedrich Mücke (Friendship!) will star alongside Pegah Ferydoni (Turkish For Beginners). The Experiment‘s Marc Conrad will produce under his ConradFilm banner with Klaus Dohle of Erfttalfilm.
Freydank isn’t the only recent award-winning short director with the opportunity to make his way into the world of feature lengths. We reported just a few weeks ago that Fox has hired Jesus Orellana to direct the feature length adaptation of his own sci-fi short Rosa, after it went viral back in November.

[1] Last year saw the debut of The Viewfinder List [2], which aims to do for aspiring filmmakers what The Black List does for screenwriters. Compiled from a poll of "studio executives, producers, and creatives," The Viewfinder List reflects the most-liked shorts, commercials, and/or music videos of the year. The inaugural list in 2010 included such up-and-comers as Patrick Jean, whose Pixels is due out in 2013, 47 Ronin director Carl Erik Rinsch, and, um, Alejandro González Iñárritu. This year's list has Dan Trachtenberg's Portal: No Escape on top, along with a few other videos you may recognize if you've been paying attention to /Film for the past year. Or even if you haven't -- that adorable Super Bowl Volkswagen ad with the little Darth Vader kid also made the cut, as did Chris Marrs Piliero's video for The Black Keys. Check out the full 2011 Viewfinder List -- with video! -- after the jump.

Jesus Orellana‘s short film Rosa is being adapted into a live-action, feature film for 20th Century Fox. The Rosa (2011) Short Film Trailer premiered in September and the Rosa (2011) Short Film premiered in November.
The short film was so strong, visually arresting, and high-end that it was speculated that it would attract a plethora of attention from film industry movers and shakers. Well it did.
The pick-up shows the level of heat Spain-based Orellan has generated with his short, which hit the web the second week of Nov. By the end of the month, he had agency representation with Verve and last week was pitching the project to studios.
This is fantastic news and Jesus Orellana deserves it. Rosa is top-tier in entertainment and imagination. I’m glad the appropriate people have taken notice.
Regarding Rosa‘s plot:
In “the near future, humanity has disappeared, leaving behind a large megalopolis devoid of natural life.

Last month we shared a hell of a great little CGI animated sci-fi short film with you called Rosa. In my initial post I wondered how long it would take before the Jesus Orellana (the creator of the short) landed his first movie deal... It didn't take long!

Remember Jesus Orellana’s short film Rosa? It was the talk of the town last month, mostly because Orellana made it for next to nothing on his home computer. The short was cyberpunk tale that really was quite impressive visually, but as we noted at the time, didn’t tell much of a story. Orellana had a detailed synopsis for the grand tale he wanted to tell – it’s just that none of that came through in the short. According to THR, Hollywood is okay with that. Orellana had already secured representation thanks to Rosa and now he’s landed the lucrative gig of directing a live-action, studio-backed version of the film for Fox. What’s the moral here? Follow your dreams and you too could wind up making a major motion picture even if you have no...

There has been a great deal of buzz for Jesus Orellana’s cyberpunk animation Rosa over the past few months. The independently animated short made a huge impression with a series of trailers and clips and now the short is online to watch for free. The short-film was created entirely by comic-artist Jesús Orellana. Wihtout a budget he completed the short within the span of a year using consumer-grade equipment. The film takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where all natural life has disappeared. From the destruction awakes Rosa, a cyborg deployed from the Kernel project, mankind’s last attempt to restore the earth’s ecosystem. Rosa will soon learn that she is not the only entity that has awakened and must fight for her survival.

Eight months after the very first teaser trailer and several festival screenings, Spanish director and creator Jesus Orellana finally released his CG short Rosa into the web. All 9:50 minutes of it, in high definition and for free on Vimeo.
And boy was this worth the wait! Despite the short running time (well, it’s a short film after all) and several clear references to Ghost in the Shell and Casshern, Orellana manages to create his own post-apocalyptic world with characters who don’t need dialogue or introductions.
I can’t wait to see the aftermath of his announcement about a live-action full-lenght feature.
Synopsis:
In the near future, humanity has disappeared leaving behind a large megalopolis devoid of natural life. From the destruction awakes Rosa, a robot part of the Kernel project, mankind’s latest attempt on restoring earth’s ecosystem with the recovery of long-extinct plant species.

Debuting tonight before the opening night screening of Kike Maillo's Eva at the Sitges Film Festival is Jesus Orellana's dazzling animated short film Rosa.Orellana wears his influences on his sleeve here, Rosa taking obvious inspiration from Ghost In The Shell, The Matrix and the work of video game studio Square Enix. It's a risky move to invite comparison to heavyweights such as this but Orellana pulls it off easily, his own work standing on the shoulders of what came before rather than simply aping. In a visually astounding world created by Orellana over the course of a year we meet Rosa, some sort of manufactured being who awakens in a world shattered by some sort of apocalypse. Humanity is gone but she is not alone,...

Let the harvest begin. Today's indie trailer is actually for a short film that's receiving quite a bit of attention around the festival circuit. The short is titled Rosa and is an "independent sci-fi cyberpunk animated short-film" created entirely by young comic-artist Jesus Orellana with no budget during a single year. Yea, this has a bit of a machinama feel to it, but visually it looks stunning for just one person creating all of this on their own. The full short runs 10 minutes, but this is just a quick trailer. I'm personally not the biggest fan of the character design, but this short trailer impressed me enough to post today. Check it out! Watch the official trailer for Jesus Orellana's Rosa, embedded via Vimeo: Synopsis: In the near future, humanity has disappeared, leaving behind a large megalopolis devoid of natural life. Rosa Short Film Trailer. Jesus Orellana‘s Rosa (2011) short film begins in “the near future, humanity has disappeared, leaving behind a large megalopolis devoid of natural life. Wandering among the ruins of the lifeless city, Rosa will soon discover that she is not the only part of Kernel that has awakened.”
This short film trailer looks fantastic. I can not wait to watch the Rosa short film. Seeing Rosa wake up in that capsule amongst all those other capsules is very telling. What had to the occupants of all those other capsules and are there others like her in those capsules?
More on the Rosa:
Rosa is currently screening in festivals worldwide including Seattle, Los Angeles, Sitges or Screamfest.
