Little did Imani (Krystal Joy Brown) know how much her life was going to change just by being stranded in the diner in which she works due to a snowstorm in Heaven Down Here. With her were her boss Dan (Richard Harmon), local pastor Felix (Juan Riedinger), and, most importantly, hospice nurse Clara (Tina Lifford), who went on to introduce her to someone who would change her and her children’s lives. Imani noticed that Clara had a photo of her as a baby (and the birthmark to prove it’s her), and the other woman asked what she knew about her adoption. “My parents never gave me much information. When I got older, I pushed, but they weren’t forthcoming. I figured it was something ugly like I was abandoned, so I didn’t press.” Clara revealed that she knew who her grandmother is: her employer Nancy (Phylicia Rashad), whose daughter — Imani’s mother,...

Krystal Joy Brown leads what’s easily one of the best and most heartwarming Hallmark movies this holiday season, Heaven Down Here. The film, which premieres on December 14 on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, is inspired by Mickey Guyton‘s song of the same name. it tells the story of four people who find themselves stranded in a local diner on Christmas Eve when a snowstorm hits: Imani (Brown), a widowed mother of two having trouble making ends meet and stuck working the holiday shift; her boss Dan (Richard Harmon), who doesn’t embody the Christmas spirit; Felix (Juan Riedinger), a local pastor whose faith is challenged by his alienation by his son; and Clara (Tina Lifford), a hospice nurse with an obstinate patient (Phylicia Rashad) and whose daughter is moving away. Brown previews what makes this movie different from any other you’ll watch this year. (It’s not about the romance.

Christmas Eve at Rocko’s Diner in Philadelphia finds a menu short on holiday spirit for four struggling strangers stuck during a snowstorm. Heaven Down Here is inspired by the 2020 country hit of the same name by Mickey Guyton, who executive produces the Hallmark movie and, says fellow executive producer Laurie Pozmantier, “gave us tidbits into her personal life and her husband’s personal life [for the story].” Those tales include worried widow Imani (Krystal Joy Brown), a broke waitress separated from her two children when grumpy boss Dan (Richard Harmon) forces her to work the holiday. During the night, Imani bonds with earnest diner Father Felix (Juan Riedinger), who has regrets involving his estranged adult son. “You don’t usually look at a pastor thinking that they’ve got something going on, but [Felix] needs advice too,” Pozmantier says. Also stranded is determined hospice nurse Clara (Tina Lifford), who longs to help obstinate...

Irony dwells in the bones of "Merrily We Roll Along," a musical that plays backward in time. The 1981 sinking of the original Broadway production of "Merrily We Roll Along" is a chaos best told by the documentary "Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened." The critics and audience were reportedly baffled by the reverse chronological storytelling and director Hal Prince's purposefully amateurish methodology, which casts high schoolers and young adults playing fortysomethings aging down to twentysomethings. It closed down after 44 previews and 16 performances. The loss demoralized the creatives so much that lyricist-composer Stephen Sondheim and Prince — mavericks who birthed successes like "Company" and "Sweeney Todd" — halted their collaboration for years. This short-lived run underscores the musical's themes: friendships breaking up and showbiz realities thwarting artistic plans.
Away from Prince's high-schoolish shell, major productions have repackaged "Merrily." This material also turned out to be a fitting endeavor for filmmaker Richard Linklater,...

What a difference 40 years makes. After opening to pans and a run of only 16 official performances in 1981, Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s musical “Merrily We Roll Along” has been remounted on Broadway for the very first time. Maria Friedman has stepped into the director role once occupied by Sondheim’s frequent collaborator Hal Prince — “Merrily” was their first flop after an impressive string of successful shows in the 70s. The revival opened on Oct. 10 at the Hudson Theatre for a run slated to end in March.
“Merrily” boasts marquee names Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez, and Daniel Radcliffe. The trio play Franklin Shepard, Mary Flynn, and Charley Kringas, respectively, the three creatives at the heart of the musical that’s told in reverse over the course of 20+ years. It begins in a moment of personal and professional disillusionment and estrangement and unspools to a simpler, earlier time when their friendships...

Troubled musicals, like troubled friendships, can often seem like defeats lying in wait, sponging up every last second of loving care, effort and good intention. So Maria Friedman’s smartly tended production of that most troubled of stage properties, the Stephen Sondheim-George Furth backwards musical Merrily We Roll Along deserves all the applause – and ticket-buying business – it’s getting at Broadway’s Hudson Theatre.
Opening tonight, the musical is drawing rapturous audience responses, no doubt in large part because of the splendid performances by three very appealing stars – Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez.
But even if we could, for the sake of argument, put the talents of this delightful trio singing some of Sondheim’s loveliest songs, aside for a moment, the undeniable charm of this production has to be credited to a sort of relief – the relief of knowing that, for the most part, Friedman...

In an unusual joint announcement, producers for Broadway powerhouses Hamilton, The Lion King and Wicked said the three shows will resume performances on Tuesday, Sept. 14 – the first day allowed under New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s reopening guidelines announced last week.
Tickets are on sale today. All three shows are housed in Nederlander Organization theaters (see below for details).
The triple announcement was made on ABC’s Good Morning America today by cast members from each production: Alexandra Billings, Madame Morrible from Wicked; Krystal Joy Brown, Eliza from Hamilton; and L. Steven Taylor, Mufasa from The Lion King.
In a press announcement, the producers noted that “this rare alliance between three of Broadway’s fan favorites sends a message that Broadway is united in its commitment to ending a devastating period of hardship for the tens of thousands who make their living directly on Broadway shows and the tens of thousands in dependent industries.

If you're already adrift without another Hallmark Original Series to watch, you're not alone.
But we have good news today as Crown Media announced new original programming and some renewals we've been waiting for.
Most importantly, there are two renewals to announce that join When Calls the Heart for (fingers crossed) a 2021 release.
Good Witch will return for a seventh season, and Chesapeake Shores will return for a fifth season!
Hurrah!
As you know, Good Witch Season 6 just ended on quite the cliffhanger.
It was the first season in which Bailee Madison didn't appear as Grace, and in Rhys Matthew Bond only made guest appearances as Nick.
Without the younger cast, the adults got a lot more storylines, and love flourished.
Cassie (Catherine Bell) and Sam (James Denton) celebrated their one-year anniversary and began to grow under each other's influence.
The proved that there is always something left to learn about your partner.

In a move to authentic representation and inclusion, gender non-conforming writer and producer Jacob Tobia is joining the voice cast of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power in the role of the non-binary character Double Trouble for season four of the Netflix animated series which will debut on November 5.

DreamWorks Animation has locked in Oscar winner Geena Davis for a recurring guest role on She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, the GLAAD- and Emmy-nominated Netflix original series that returns August 2 with its Season 3 adventures.
The casting coup was announced by executive producer Noelle Stevenson during a fireside chat with Davis at the Bentonville Film Festival. The announced theme of that stage conversation: a panel discussing representation and inclusion in entertainment titled “She for She: Power of the Pack.”
Davis voices a character named Huntara, the imposing de facto leader of the Crimson Waste, who reluctantly helps Adora, Glimmer and Bow on a quest. Davis may have a special affinity for the sword-and-sandal scene as an elite archer in her personal life. Davis famously took up archery at age 41 and proved to be such a savant that, just two years later, she narrowly missed on her bid to compete on the U.

Ever since “oldies” like Scream entered their “retrospective anniversary articles” phase, slasher cinema has failed to regain control of genre airwaves like those 80’s mainstays of pulp and cultural circumstance. Your still-relevant Friday The 13th or Child’s Play franchises. To that, I’ve always considered Adam Green’s Hatchet an exception to trends. My first taste of Victor Crowley’s bayou legend struck me as – pound for pound – one of the post-2000 era’s gnarliest slasher rebirths. Hatchet II and Hatchet III, two underrated indie continuations, only strengthened my arguments. Count me a ranking axe-wielder in the Hatchet Army, and a continual fan of Green’s work (Frozen chills to the core, Digging Up The Marrow blasts creativity).
Unfortunately, this just makes 2018’s Victor Crowley a bigger disappointment in my eyes.

Fans of slasher cinema will probably be aware that this is the fourth movie in the “Hatchet” series, written or directed or both by Adam Green. He’s been going for a while, making TV (Fear.Net’s “Holliston”, and a few horror documentary shows) and movies – a handful of thrillers and short films, as well as this.
“Hatchet” is a comedy-horror series about Victor Crowley, a deformed fellow who lives in the swamps outside New Orleans, and kills people with a…well, you know. If you’re like me, and this is your first toe dipped into the waters of Mr Green and his cinematic universe, well, I don’t think there’s a lot of backstory to worry about. Large mute monster, completely indestructible, laughs, gore, slasher movies. So let’s get into it!

If there were a prayer for Broadway shows it would be for all of them to be hits.
Despite good intentions, though, Leap of Faith" at the St. James Theatre is an unanswered prayer.
The idea is there -- a fake preacher swindles people, and eventually he must face his conscience.
Conning people of faith -- or into faith -- is so evil, there should be plenty of material to mine. And mounting it as a musical is a natural, paving the way for rich gospel voices (it isn't as if New York theatergoers are unreceptive to musicals with choirs; witness "Sister Act"). Composer Alan Menken, who also created the music for "Sister Act" and "Newsies," definitely knows his way around Broadway songs.
Yet as great as Raul Esparza can be -- and he was magnificent in "Company" -- this does not seem to be the right role for him.
