Warning: Contains some spoilers for ‘Dot And Bubble’
For anyone who might’ve found last week’s folk horror-inflected episode of Doctor Who, ‘73 Yards’, a little too ambiguous, you’ll have no such quibbles with the series’ follow-up offering, ‘Dot And Bubble’. A candy-coloured cautionary tale about the perils of tech dependency and online echo chambers set in a world where everybody lives in literal social media bubbles, the fifth episode of Russell T. Davies’ Who reboot is about as subtle as a flatulent Slitheen. But unsubtle doesn’t necessarily mean ineffective, and despite the heavy-handedness of its opening throes, Davies’ Black Mirror-riffing latest eventually builds to a flooring sucker punch of a finale that would stop even Charlie Brooker in his tracks.
After the darkness of ‘Boom’ and the wintry chill of ‘73 Yards’, ‘Dot And Bubble’ sees Davies whisk viewers away to Finetime, a pastel-paletted, domed-in alien idyll populated by rich-kid human colonists.

Spoilers below for both "Doctor Who" and "Black Mirror."
In a recent interview about the latest "Doctor Who" episode, showrunner Russell T. Davies teased that the show would "step into 'Black Mirror' territory." It turns out that Davies is a big fan of the dystopian anthology series and its creator, Charlie Brooker. But even as his latest episode took inspiration from the show, he promised it'd still have that "Doctor Who" spin:
"[Brooker's] immensely brilliant. But there's a little bit more freedom and 'Doctor Who' madness in 'Dot and Bubble'. There's a sense of fun. And monsters in the middle of it... So although it's 'Black Mirror'-like, it's more 'Doctor Who.' ['Dot and Bubble']'s got the bones and the blood of our favourite show."
Sure enough, the latest episode of season 14 is clearly based off of "Nosedive." That's a famous season 3 "Black Mirror" episode, centered...

No news is good news... until it's bad news.
Apple TV+ has canceled its Uma Thurman drama series Suspicion after a single season.
Deadline first reported the news a year and a half after its freshman finale.
"When the son of a prominent American businesswoman (Thurman) is kidnapped from a New York hotel, the eye of suspicion quickly falls on four seemingly ordinary British citizens who were at the hotel on the night in question," the logline teased.
"As they find themselves in a trans-Atlantic cat and mouse race to evade the combined forces of the National Crime Agency and the F.B.I. to prove their innocence, it becomes apparent that not everyone can be trusted."
"Who is really behind the mysterious abduction, and who is only guilty of being in the wrong place at the wrong time?"

Kandahar reunites is director Rick Roman Waugh with Gerard Butler, after they made Angel Has Fallen and Greenland together. This time they tackle the spy thriller genre, with cast that includes Travis Fimmel, Navid Negahban, Ali Fazal, and Bahador Foladi. With the script penned by Mitchell Lafortune, these particular types of stories often suffer from narrative sameness: westerner travels to the Middle East, things go boom, westerner saves the day, the end. This follows a predictable path.
The story begins in Iran with Tom Harris (Butler) with his partner Oliver (Tom Rhys Harries) working on wiring at a nuclear plant center. This cover is just to deposit a bomb. The two are surrounded by guards who become suspicious of their intentions, but Harris de-escalates the situation, and they manage to get away. His partner is worried that the army forces are onto them being CIA spies. Things are fine until...

Apple TV+ thriller “Suspicion” is set to hit the sales block in Cannes at this year’s MipTV market.
Keshet International has revealed that the eight-part series starring Uma Thurman will headline its drama slate at the spring TV market in France, which kicks off on April 17. The Israeli TV distributor will shop linear rights for the series.
Apple TV+ commissioned Keshet U.K. to produce “Suspicion,” which is based on the popular Israeli series “False Flag” and launched on the service in February 2022. Its sales foray marks one of the rare instances where an original on a streamer (that’s still available globally on the platform) has been sold on the open market for linear rights.
In recent years, major SVODs have been focused on keeping originals on their own platforms for extensive periods in order to drive subscribers. However, in this case, it’s Keshet International that holds...

Nearly 125 years after her assassination, the Empress Elisabeth of Austria — or Sisi to her enduring cultists — continues to inspire a veritable industry of portraiture in Europe: In the last year alone, a novel, two TV series (one of them a glossy Netflix affair) and two feature films have been dedicated to the tightly corseted royal icon. Viewers outside the Continental sphere of Sisi-mania may only have registered one of those films, Marie Kreutzer’s chic, subversive anti-biopic “Corsage,” which might make the second, German director Frauke Finsterwalder’s lush, irreverent “Sisi & I,” seem to them a too-soon spare — coincidentally repeating several tricks from Kreutzer’s anachronistic playbook with its modern feminist inflections, contemporary soundtrack cues and sensational fashions, albeit with plenty of its own panache.
That unfortunate timing, combined with the absence of a Vicky Krieps-style crossover arthouse star, may cost “Sisi & I” some distributor interest outside...

The Israeli-Palestinian drama “Roll,” from Italian-American first-time director Loris Lai and producer Lawrence Bender, has wrapped production in Tunisia and in Tarak Ben Ammar Studios in Tunis.
The film, which is inspired by the Italian novel “Sulle Onde della Libertà” by Nicoletta Bortolotti, is written by Lai and Dahlia Heyman. The story is set in the midst of war-torn Gaza, where two 12-year-old boys, one Palestinian and the other Israeli, along with an ex-surfing champion, form an unlikely friendship over their mutual love for the water. The lessons they learn from one another go beyond the waves, helping influence their decision-making and show their community that peace can exist.
The Palestinian and Israeli boys are played by newcomers Marwin Hemdan and Mikael Fridel, while Tom Rhys Harries (“The Gentleman; White Lines”) will play the ex-surfing champion. Lyna Khoudri (“The French Dispatch”) also stars.

Netflix's White Lines is a wild ride of violence, all-night parties, and falling in love with people you shouldn't fall in love with. The Ibiza-set story follows Zoe Walker (Laura Haddock) as she tries to figure out exactly what happened to her brother, Axel (Tom Rhys Harries), 20 years ago when he left home in Manchester, England, and set off for a new life in Ibiza. It takes all 10 episodes of the first (and perhaps only) season to get to the bottom of his disappearance, and the end is definitely not what we expected.
Axel is best friends with his younger sister, Zoe, and wants her to come along with him to Ibiza when their dad kicks him out. She stays behind, though, because she's still underage. She promises Axel that when she turns 18, she'll come join him and his friends in their lavish life. He disappears, though, and Zoe...

There are few more tedious experiences than being sober around people who are off their heads. If you’re not also buzzing your tits off, the life epiphanies of dilated-pupil, jaw-clenched, hug-fetishist ravers resemble nothing so much as the unmusical cawing of an especially stupid crow.
Not that it’s put Netflix off setting new 10-part drama White Lines in the heart of the Ibizan rave scene. That’s because Netflix knows that if a show provides enough topless women, slo-mo shagging and Sunday supplement-worthy beach villas, audiences will tolerate anything – up to and including loved-up 90s kids talking about how house music is going to change the world.
On one level, White Lines is about the conflict between youthful freedom and adult responsibility, hedonism versus restraint, instinct versus intellect. On another, much louder level, it’s about tits and coke and abs and Laurence Fox being chased by a hallucinated gorilla.

Daniel Monks.
After making his feature film debut in director Stevie Cruz-Martin’s Pulse, Daniel Monks moved to London in 2018 because he figured the UK offered more career opportunities.
That proved to be a smart decision as the actor made his West End debut this year as the lead in Teenage Dick – and then went straight into rehearsals for a contemporary re-imagining of the classic Chekhov play The Seagull.
In the adaptation by Anya Reiss which premieres at Playhouse Theatre on March 11, he will play Konstantin, an aspiring playwright who is smitten with Nina (Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke).
Indira Varma, another GoT alum, will play his mother, the celebrated actress Arkadina, with Tom Rhys Harries as Trigorin, who steals Nina away from Konstantin.
Monks, whose right side has been paralysed since a spinal cord tumour was removed when he was 11, is thrilled to be playing an able-bodied character and alongside such a stellar cast.

Stars: Finn Cole, Asa Butterfield, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Michael Sheen, Margot Robbie, Hermione Corfield, Jo Hartley, Jamie Blackley, Isabella Laughland, Tom Rhys Harries, Kit Connor, Hanako Footman, Jane Stanness | Written by Crispian Mills, Henry Fitzherbert | Directed by Crispian Mills
Slaughterhouse Rulez, directed by Crispian Mills, is the first produced joint venture between Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s production company Stolen Picture. The two also star in this campy comedy flick that is mash-up of Edgar Wright’s beloved British comedy Shaun of the Dead and Neil Marshall’s cult-classic underground monster movie Dog Soldiers, released in 2004 and 2002 respectively. However, Slaughterhouse Rulez feels more of a hollow homage of sorts – a thinly veiled layer of both horror and comedy that is sadly entirely derivative of any and all of Edgar Wright’s filmography, albeit with a decent screenplay and character craft.
The performances are undoubtedly the key highlight of this production.

Baz Luhrmann has delivered a gift for anyone who is still mourning the loss of Netflix’s drama series “The Get Down” and is anxiously waiting for “Moulin Rouge!” to hit Broadway. Luhrmann’s latest directorial effort has arrived thanks to a short film for the Erdem x H&M fashion campaign, and let’s just say the filmmaker is probably one of the best choices if you need to make fashion look cinematic.

With The Get Down in the rearview mirror, Baz Luhrmann has stated he stepped away in order to focus on a new feature film. While that project hasn’t been announced yet, we do have new work from him in the form of a new holiday commercial, which is of course behind billed a a “cinematic short film” by H&M, who last recruited Wes Anderson. Titled “The Secret Life of Flowers,” it’s shot by frequent David Cronenberg cinematographer Peter Suschitzky and is set in a lavish mansion with all the opulence one would expect from the director.

Hot Property clearly wants to be a screwball comedy about the vapid, materialistic members of London’s corporate world. Even if it knows precious little about them. Protagonist Melody (MyAnna Buring) is a ruthless corporate spy concerned only with keeping her central London flat. Her nemesis, Laurie (Kate Bracken), is a rising online journalist working for Melody’s ever inconstant sister-in-law Saskia. Melody is aided by her hapless brother (Sam Phillips), an officer worker now occupying her parents’ home, and boyfriend Harmony, an oversexed chef forever trying to start a pop-up business.
Director Max McGill, here making his debut feature, makes the right choice tonally, leaning fully into the absurdity of these overprivileged caricatures. It’s just that the writing fails to capitalise on them on a consistent basis. Melody’s object fetishism and Laurie’s millennial obliviousness are suitably cartoonish examples that barely get any showcasing.

Universal Pictures has released the trailer for Dragonheart: Battle for the Heartfire, which is the fourth film in the Dragonheart fantasy film franchise. In this film, Patrick Stewart provides the voice of the dragon Drago. This is a role that Sean Connery played in the 1996 film and Ben Kingsley played in the third film in 2015. Here's the synopsis"
In Dragonheart: Battle for the Heartfire, Patrick Stewart voices Drago, the magnificent dragon who became bonded with King Gareth. When the king dies, his potential heirs, twin grandchildren who possess the dragon’s unique strengths, use their inherited powers against each other to vie for the throne. When Drago’s source of power – known as the Heartfire – is stolen, more than the throne is at stake; the siblings must end their rivalry with swords and sorcery or the kingdom may fall.

“Un-romantic comedy” has been picked up by Octane Entertainment ahead of the Efm.
Hot Property, the UK indie comedy starring MyAnna Buring, has secured an international sales deal with Us outfit Octane Entertainment, who will be selling the title at this week’s European Film Market (Efm) in Berlin.
UK marketing company Coffee & Cigarettes brokered the deal on behalf of the producers. 101 Films has taken UK rights and released the film in the Us in December 2016.
The film marks the feature debut of Max McGill, who was Bafta-nominated along with his Hot Property producer Campbell Beaton for producing Oscar Sharp’s 2014 short The Karman Line starring Olivia Colman. McGill co-wrote the screenplay with Dawn King, Tiernan Hanby also produced.
The film is a self-dubbed “un-romantic comedy” set amid London’s property market and hipster culture. Buring stars alongside Tom Rhys Harries, Alex Ferns, Ella Smith and Kate Bracken.

Mercy's for Picts!
Ironclad: Battle for Blood picks up where the original, bizarrely well-cast Ironclad (2011) left off and goes in another, astonishingly similar direction. Guy (Tom Austen), the battle-scarred Aeneas of the Rochester siege, has given up on the idea of honor and now beats people to death for money. Even when his cousin, Hubert (Tom Rhys Harries), needs him to help defend his family's castle against marauding Scots, he still demands to get paid. Guy also brings along his buddy Berenger (David Caves), a sadistic executioner (Andy Beckwith), and a lunatic murderess (Twinnie Lee Moore). This film bears such a striking likeness to the plot developments in Ironclad but without the vague political implications that it's almost as if they went to Jonathan English and asked if he could do roughly the same thing but with less money. His answer was "Yes, yes I can. But only if I...

Ironclad: Battle For Blood is a sequel to Ironclad which was released in 2011. I have not seen the first film but based on what is on view in Battle for Blood it would be worth seeking out. Ironclad: Battle for Blood is a different type of historical war movie. There are no fancy sword moves, no spell casting wizards or dragons running amok. What we have here is a serious version of the type of thing Monty Python used to do, especially in their movie about the Holy Grail, showing what life in the middle ages was really like. Dirty, dangerous, ignorant, short and brutish.
Opening titles tell us that in the 12th Century England had laid waste to Scotland and then withdrawn. Scottish clans raided estates and castles all over the northern part of England in retaliation.

The Rocket | Under The Skin | The Zero Theorem | Suzanne | Veronica Mars | Need For Speed | Plot For Peace
The Rocket (12A)
(Kim Mordaunt, 2013, Aus/Thai/Laos) Sitthiphon Disamoe, Loungnam Kaosainam, Thep Phongam, Bunsri Yindi. 96 mins
Children are often the best ambassadors for world cinema and so it proves here, in a Laos-set tale that's sympathetic but never condescending. The story centres on a displaced boy burdened by a perceived "curse". But it's told with documentary-like conviction and distinctly local details, from James Brown-worshipping war vets to the unexploded ordnance littering the landscape.
Under The Skin (15)
(Jonathan Glazer, 2013, UK) Scarlett Johansson, Paul Brannigan. Krystof Hádek. 108 mins
Glazer's delectably mystifying sci-fi makes Glasgow look like another planet – as seen through the eyes of Johansson's alien seductress, on the prowl for unsuspecting males. It sounds like a highbrow Species, but the imagery and sustained strangeness put it in a realm of its own.

Writer-director Jonathan English got surprisingly lucky with the first Ironclad (2011) film, as it offered a thrilling/shocking blood thirst of video-gaming proportions, as well as an impressive cast, including Paul Giamatti, Brian Cox, Derek Jacobi, Charles Dance and the dashing James Purefoy. Still set in the harsh surroundings of 13th Century Britain, post the Great Siege of Rochester Castle, the second film, Ironclad 2: Battle For Blood, seems to have switched target audience, with a more youthful cast of mainly TV actors.

It's 1216 and one year after the battle at Rochester Castle. English warrior Hubert (Tom Rhys Harries) faces a new foe as Celtic raiders sweep across the land, killing anyone who gets in their way. It’s the summer of 1976, and between a conservative school administration and an unrelenting drought, things are beyond dry for Wales’ scrappier teens. It’s little wonder that they flock to the more permissive Miss Mae (Minnie Driver) and her glam-rock interpretation of Shakespeare’s "The Tempest" for the school play. Alas, "Hunky Dory" primarily concerns itself with familiar extracurricular woes and offers up much ado about nothing instead of a more rollicking or romantic coming-of-age story. Each protagonist has their healthy amount of burdens. Mae has to contend with a “small delegation” of disgruntled faculty; to hear it from one, “self-expression doesn’t butter any parsnips” (She is just as puzzled by the remark as we are.) There’s nice guy Davy (Aneurin Barnard) harboring a crush on the play’s co-lead, Stella (Danielle Branch); bullied Kenny (Darren Evans) giving into the peer pressures of his skinhead brethren; and...
