One of the best things that has made Game of Thrones such an ongoing phenomenon, even almost six years after its finale, was its iconic cast of characters. The biggest thing that has made those characters so memorable wasn't just due to the writing, but the casting. It's hard to imagine anyone other than Sophie Turner as Sansa Stark or Kit Harrington as Jon Snow. Throughout the series, however, there were quite a few supporting characters that did end up being recast for one reason or another, whether it was personal, creative, or both. Given the length of time between their appearances, not all of these recasts were noticed by the fans, and some of them were even considered to be improvements over the ones who played the characters originally.

The groundbreaking mockumentary Ghostwatch, which shocked audiences in 1992 with its blend of reality and fiction, is honored in Haunted Ulster Live, a fascinating tribute.
This film takes place on Halloween night in 1998 in a haunted house in Belfast, where a live feed attempts to capture the strange things happening to the McKillen Family. The film cleverly reimagines the original’s premise, utilizing a mix of recognizable tropes and fresh twists to engage modern viewers.
With its release in October 2024, Haunted Ulster Live comes at a perfect time for new ideas in the horror genre, reflecting how we feel about technology and the unknown in general.
While addressing contemporary issues about media consumption and the authenticity of live broadcasting, the film’s premise plays on nostalgia for the late 1990s. This connection to Ghostwatch honors its legacy while also challenging us to reevaluate how we engage with horror in the age of digital horror.

"Game of Thrones" had its share of recastings -- they were inevitable with a production and an ensemble as sprawling as the show had. The series had two Daario Naharises (Ed Skrein and then Michiel Huisman) and three Gregor Cleganes. After season 2, "Game of Thrones" also recast both of the younger Lannister-Baratheon siblings, Myrcella (Aimée Richardson and then future "First Omen" star Nell Tiger Free) and King Tommen (Callum Wharry and Dean Charles Chapman). Even Daenerys Targaryen was played by Tamzin Merchant, not Emilia Clarke, in the unaired (and then remade) "Game of Thrones" pilot.
One "Game of Thrones" recasting might have slipped your notice, though, because both successive actors were buried beneath make-up. That recasting would be the Night King, leader of the undead White Walkers. In seasons 4 and 5, the Night King was played by Welsh actor Richard Brake; you might recognize him as Joe Chill (murderer of Bruce Wayne's parents) from "Batman Begins,...

Amiable lo-fi horror film presents itself as a live broadcast from a haunted suburban home. It’s well crafted – though unlikely to scare viewers the way the 1992 BBC mockumentary did
On Halloween in 1992, the BBC spooked the nation with the mockumentary Ghostwatch, an apparently live broadcast from Britain’s most haunted house. Despite its being advertised as drama, many viewers believed it was real; some even thought that presenter Michael Parkinson was actually possessed by a poltergeist called Pipes. Naturally the complaints poured in. Ghostwatch’s cult status will get a boost from this affectionate tribute from Northern Ireland: a nicely acted, good-natured lo-fi horror with some creepy moments but nothing properly scary to keep you awake.
It is 1998. A Northern Irish TV channel is broadcasting live on Halloween from a suburban house where a poltergeist has been terrorising a mum and her two kids. Inside the house is Gerry Burns...

Brilliant performances elevate The First Omen's well-executed chills and thrills to a terrifying experience. Despite struggling at the box office, The First Omen received rave reviews from viewers and critics. Director Arkasha Stevenson's forte, along with Ben Jacoby's taut writing, make The First Omen a compelling and immersive horror.
The First Omen's well-executed chills and thrills are further elevated by the brilliant performances of its cast members, who perfectly portray their respective characters. Serving as a prequel to the horror classic The Omen, The First Omen walks through the conspiracy that led to the birth of the Antichrist from the original movie. Despite having a compelling storyline and a talented filmmaker like Arkasha Stevenson at its helm, The First Omen struggled to leave its mark at the box office and only earned close to $54 million worldwide against a budget of $30 million.

Haunted Ulster Live is part homage to, and part parody of the BBC’s infamous Ghostwatch. For those unfamiliar with it, it was a 1992 Halloween special hosted by Michael Parkinson and presented as a live broadcast from a haunted house. Unfortunately, many viewers didn’t know it wasn’t the real thing and the BBC ended up fielding over 1,000,000 from concerned viewers. An early entry in the mockumentary/found footage genre it’s also the precursor of films like Kild TV, Deadstream, and The Cleansing Hour.

While Game of Thrones is set in fantasy world, it looks like we may have a real-life coupling! Dean-Charles Chapman, who plays Tommen Baratheon, and Nell Tiger Free, who stars as Myrcella Baratheon in the show's most recent season (the role was previously played by Aimee Richardson), are rumored to be dating. Buzzfeed was first to report the romance rumors surrounding the acting duo, who also happen to play brother and sister on the HBO hit. While there's no official confirmation that the 17-year-old actor and his 15-year-old co-star have a budding romance, a quick peek at their social media accounts will reveal that the two spend a lot of time hanging out off set (particularly since Myrcella has...

Spoilers ahead for the most recent episode of Game of Thrones. If you thought Myrcella's changed a lot since season two of Game of Thrones, you're not wrong. Just as the part of Tommen was recast, so was his sister’s, the princess whose betrothal to a Dornish prince was arranged by her uncle Tyrion so he could keep her safe, arrange an alliance with the Martells, and root out Cersei's spy, in one fell swoop. The actress who plays Myrcella now, Nell Tiger Free, is still sorting out what to call Jaime Lannister ("My dad? My uncle?"), but in this, her first-ever interview, she chats with Vulture about princesses for hire, what Myrcella would do if she were queen, and shooting kisses on her birthday.Did you ever have an occasion to talk to the previous Myrcella, Aimee Richardson? She posted a picture of herself with a sign, "Princess for Hire.

With just under one month left until the Season 5 premiere of HBO's Game of Thrones, the network has released two new clips, one of which reveals why the episode is entitled "The Wars to Come". The first scene features Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), who escaped from Westeros at the end of Season 4, conversing with the man who helped him get out of King's Landing, Lord Varys (Conleth Hill). Since Varys is not related to the Lannisters in any way, Tyrion asks him why he arranged the escape. Varys reveals that he did what he did for the good of the realm, and that a man of Tyrion's talents will be needed in "the wars to come."
The second clip takes us north of the Wall, with Jon Snow (Kit Harington) talking to Mance Rayder (Ciarán Hinds) about pride. This clip also references that Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane) and his...

Here's a first look at 15 year old Nell Tiger Free (represented by Independent Talent) who stars as Myrcella Baratheon in the new series of Game of Thrones, taking over the role from Aimee Richardson, who played the character for the first two seasons.
Nell (who trained with Esta Charkham in Chiswick) previously starred in the BBC Christmas adaptation of the David Walliams children's book Mr Stink.
Myrcella is the sister of the deceased young king Joffrey, and the new king Tommen (played by Dean Charles Chapman).
In the second series she was shipped off to be the guest and ward of Prince Doran, betrothed to his son, and hasn't been seen since, but things are set to change with the death of Oberyn Martell, the Prince’s brother. She is seen here with another newcomer to the celebrated HBO series, Toby Sebastian who plays her betrothed Trystane Martell.

A new (old) princess is coming. When season five's nine new castmembers were announced during Game of Thrones' panel at San Diego Comic-Con, one actor, Nell Tiger Free, announced she was playing a role quite familiar to fans: Princess Myrcella Baratheon (but come on, we all know she's all Lannister), a character who has been on the show since the pilot. And with that, Aimee Richardson's prompt exit from the HBO fantasy hit happened. Fortunately, Richardson is handling the recasting news like a pro, posting the most hilariously sad (or sadly hilarious) video to ever hit Vine. Aimee Richardson, who played Princess Myrcella on the first two seasons of HBO’s Game of Thrones, wants people to know she’s now a “Princess For Hire.”
Aimee Richardson Is Princess For Hire
Richardson, 16, had assumed that she’d be back in the role of Myrcella for Game of Throne’s fifth season. As the second oldest Baratheon child – that was actually born of the incest between her mother Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) and Cersei's twin brother Jamie (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) – Myrcella stood to be crowned queen following Joffrey’s (Jack Gleeson) death at The Purple Wedding.
Following The Purple Wedding episode, Richardson took to Vine, placing a crown upon her head and saying, “I’m ready.”
Unfortunately for Richardson, Game of Thrones producers announced at Comic-Con that Nell Tiger Free would be replacing her in the role of Myrcella for the upcoming season. Once again taking to Vine, Richardson...

It’s a hard life, playing a princess on Game of Thrones. Sure, you get some guaranteed screen time whenever someone gets married. Sure, there’s always the ambient possibility that you’re suddenly going to become the most important character 40 episodes after you get introduced. But Thrones has also made a habit of recasting some of its minor characters, aging them upwards or beardwards, clearly operating under the assumption that people can barely keep track of the show’s 5,000 characters already.
And so it was that Aimee Richardson—a day 1 Thrones cast member who played nominal Baratheon/actual Lannister...

Being cast on HBO's "Game of Thrones" is hazardous. At any moment your character could be maimed or killed, usually without warning…although in hindsight it is always Always due their own poor life choices. But there is another threat. The threat of recast. Whether blowing through Gregor Clegane actors like tissue paper, finding a new Tommen Baratheon to take the throne, replacing Daario Naharis with a hotter upgrade, or just casting actors to replace previously used placeholders, no one is safe from the diabolical casting department. The most recent casualty is Aimee Richardson who played Princess Myrcella Baratheon for the first two seasons of the show. Shipped off to Dorne for "her own safety" by Uncle Tyrion, Myrcella's role is about to expand. To that end HBO decided actress Free Tiger Nell was a better fit for Myrcella's upcoming story arc. Upon hearing the news, Richardson took to social...

The former Myrcella Baratheon has taken to Vine to react to her Game Of Thrones recasting…

The latest for the chop is Aimee Richardson, who portrayed Joffrey’s little sister Myrcella Baratheon up until her character was shipped off to Dorne in season two.
With season five set to up-sticks and delve into Dorne in some detail, Richardson wont be returning to her role. Nell Tiger Free, who’s also appeared on telly in Mr Stink and Morse prequel Endeavour, will take up the part instead.

HBO's Comic Con panel for "Game of Thrones" was a doozy, announcing new cast members for season 5, many of whom appeared in an exclusive video. The new characters pulled from George R.R. Martin's books include Oberyn Martell's brother Doran; his son, Trystane; a slave trader named Yezzan. There's also a new Myrcella Baratheon (previously played by Aimee Richardson). Among the bigger names on the announcement were Oscar nominee Keisha Castle-Hughes ("Whale Rider") and genre favorite Jonathan Pryce, seen in Terry Gillam's "Brazil," the "G.I.Joe" films, the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films and the James Bond film "Tomorrow Never Dies." They'll join returning stars Lena Headey, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, Ciarán Hinds, Emilia Clarke and many more. Here's a breakdown of the new characters and actors, quoted from the press release: Alexander Siddig as Doran Martell Doran Martell is the ruling lord of Dorne...

We've already heard that Whale Rider's Keisha Castle-Hughes might be up for the role of Nymeria Sand, and now in their "What We Know So Far" report on Game Of Thrones season 5, Vulture name a couple of actresses that have been rumored for roles that seem to have flown under our radar. The first is Tania Raymonde (Lost, Texas Chainsaw), who has reportedly (her audition vid has since been removed) read for Obara Sand; and possibly replacing young Aimee Richardson as Myrcella Baratheon/Lannister is 15-year-old tv actress Nell Tiger Free. Remember none of this is official yet, and even if they've read for roles it doesn't mean they'll nab them. But some announcements are expected at Comic Con, so maybe we'll find out more then.

With season 4 not even cold in its grave, we take a spoiler-free look ahead to what Game Of Thrones season 5 has in store…
Feature
Warning: contains major spoilers for the season four finale, The Children, but designed to be safe for non A Song Of Ice And Fire readers.
“Season five gives me nightmares”. It may not be the most inspiring quote from Game Of Thrones co-showrunner David Benioff, but as A Song Of Ice And Fire readers will tell you, his fears aren’t unjustified.
Book four of George R.R. Martin’s series - A Feast For Crows, the events of which would ordinarily be adapted for season five - is easily the saga’s least popular volume. Were season five to follow it slavishly, we wouldn’t see fan favourites Tyrion Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen or Jon Snow back next year as none features in the fourth book. Instead,...

With most shows, the writers must pose questions like, 'What should *main character* do next?' With a show like Game of Thrones, the writers must ask, 'Who do we include next?' The series, which airs Episode 2.03: What Is Dead May Never Die Sunday, April 15 at 9 Pm Et on HBO, has such an immense, sprawling cast, that main players are often absent in particular episodes, and this week is no different. We haven't seen King Joffrey (Jack Gleeson) since the Season 2 premiere, and he doesn't show up this week either, although his minions and methods are put on display once more. After two weeks of minimal involvement, there is no sign of Daenerys Targeryan (Emilia Clarke) in Sunday night's episode, but, thankfully, there is plenty of Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) to fill those voids.
(Be warned, spoilers from Episode 2.02: The Night Falls are contained within, so read...

Chicago – Being an entertainment critics calls for top ten lists in December of every year but I’ve always been someone who believes that these things are not written in stone. I don’t think there’s a single top ten for film or television that is the same today as on the day I wrote it. Oh, they’re close, but the fact is that not only do some things age better than others but sometimes it takes time to fully appreciate something or to realize one was incorrect the first time around. Not three months after I wrote my Top Ten TV of 2011 piece and I can tell you this — The first season of “Game of Thrones,” recently released on Blu-ray and DVD, wasn’t high enough. It’s only March and I think it should have been #3. Maybe if I watch again, I’ll move it up...

Chicago – HBO has had waves of creative success including the one started by “The Sopranos” & “Sex and the City,” a later one peaked by “Deadwood” & “The Wire,” and now, a current one that began with “Boardwalk Empire,” continued through the final season of “Big Love,” crested with the masterful “Mildred Pierce,” and appears to have no sign of ebbing with the brilliant, mesmerizing “Game of Thrones.”
TV Rating: 5.0/5.0
The tagline for “Game of Thrones” and a phrase repeated by Lord Eddard “Ned” Stark (Sean Bean) on the program has been “Winter is Coming” (the other being the also-appropriate “You Win or You Die”.) The line sets the stage for a program steeped in dread. Whether it’s a character’s incredibly dark secrets rising to the surface, the fact that rulers don’t rule for long in this world, or the literal threat of something dangerous on the edge of this civilization,...

HBO's new fantasy series Game of Thrones creates a massive world with its own jargon and a ton of characters-Jace Lacob's glossary and character gallery explain all!
For the uninitiated, Game of Thrones can be confusing. Based on the long, plot-heavy novels by George R.R. Martin, the HBO show (premiering Sunday at 9 p.m. Edt) is bursting with more characters and settings than you can swing a broadsword at.

Game of Thrones is a political potboiler crossed with the essence of medieval legend, as ambitious and power-hungry lords and ladies vie for the throne, unleashing a violent and dangerous game that threatens the tenuous peace of this feudal society.
