Watch out “Woj” and “Shams,” there’s a new NBA scoop machine: “CNN Sports.”
The biggest NBA move of the week broke on TNT’s Inside the NBA Tuesday night, with the studio team revealing that ESPN analyst Doc Rivers had agreed to become the head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks. Their source? “CNN Sports.”
“Ok, are we ready for breaking news?” Inside the NBA host Adam Lefkoe began. “We have news in from CNN…” “From CNN?!” analyst Jamal Crawford responded. “From CNN Sports,” Lefkoe continued, breaking the Rivers news on-air.
Bleacher Report, TNT Sports’ digital news brand, subsequently shared the news itself, also citing CNN Sports.
And not long after the news broke on TNT, CNN.com published a story (the byline was just “CNN Staff”) with more detail on the move. It wasn’t until Wednesday morning that ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (“Woj”) and The Athletic’s Shams Charania (“Shams”) confirmed the move.

The Brooklyn Nets have been fined $50,000 for letting Kyrie Irving — who is unvaccinated — into the team locker room, which violated both New York City and NBA Covid protocols, the league announced on Monday.
The violation occurred during their game against the Knicks on Sunday at Barclays Center. The controversial guard has not been allowed to play any of the team’s games at Barclays this season because he is unvaccinated. Unvaccinated fans were not allowed into the arena until this week. Irving watched Sunday’s game from the team’s bench.

Updated: Lebron James has been cleared to return to the basketball court after “two negative Pcr tests conducted 24 hours apart,” according to a statement from the NBA Communications team.
“James was originally placed in the Protocols on Tuesday, November 30, after a series of tests delivered conflicting results,” read the statement. One test did come back positive on November 29 (Monday), but “additional testing confirmed he is not positive.”
The Lakers are set to play L.A. rivals the Clippers on Friday night. That game was reportedly set to air nationally, but in James’ absence, was replaced by a Suns-Warriors game.

The NBA fined Dallas Mavericks player Kristaps Porzingis $50,000 for partying at a club and breaking the league’s Covid-19 rules, a decision that prompted some basketball fans to question why the league chose not to discipline LeBron James for attending a party last week before a game.
Fans noted this disconnect between the two decisions on social media Tuesday and “but LeBron” quickly started trending on Twitter.
The NBA defended its decision not to fine James for attending an outdoor brand launch of Lobos 1707 Tequila before the Lakers’ May 19 game against the Golden State Warriors by pointing out that people had to test negative for the virus or be vaccinated in order to attend the event. LeBron became a primary investor in the tequila brand last year.

Thursday’s NBA playoff schedule, and perhaps the entire playoffs, still hang in the balance, as a meeting of NBA players and coaches Wednesday failed to reach a concensus on next steps.
One top NBA writer said the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers both voted to end the season without continuing. The other teams allegedly wanted to play on.
Wednesday’s NBA playoff games were postponed when the Milwaukee Bucks – the team nearest Kenosha, Wisconsin, where the Jacob Blake shooting incident that sparked protests and looting took place – decided not to play their game. The NBA has not said when those games would be made up.
Players and coaches met for three hours today without reaching a conclusion, and discussed whether the season should continue. A person with knowledge of the meeting told the Associated Press that no decisions were reached.
