Frightfest 2014: ‘Extraterrestrial’ Review
Stars: Julián Villagrán, Michelle Jenner, Carlos Areces, Raúl Cimas, Miguel Noguera | Written and Directed by Nacho Vigalondo

Nacho Vigalondo made quite the splash with 2007’s Timecrimes, a dark and rather uncompromising time-travel thriller which impressed many. To British eyes it would seem like all had gone quiet on the Nacho front but this was not the case. His next film Extraterrestial was playing Italy when my wife and I were on honeymoon, but we celebrated our third anniversary last week. A delayed release is something we see fairly often but in the case of Extraterrestial it is bizarre as this is a charming but admittedly small-scale film though one which would work with a wider audience than a pure genre one as is the case with the FrightFest audience.

Much of this is down to the simple fact that the film barely dabbles in the sci-fi nature of its opening.

FrightFest 2014: 'Extraterrestrial' review
★★☆☆☆Four years after making a respectable impact with his debut Timecrimes (2007), Nacho Vigalondo returns with Extraterrestrial (2011), a low-budget Spanish science fiction drama that's unlikely to have the same impact. The film centres on Julio (Julián Villagrán) and Julia (Michelle Jenner), two people who wake up together with no memory of the night before. Before they have chance to figure out what has happened, they come to the realisation that there's an alien spacecraft hovering outside their window. Confined to Julia's apartment, the pair must not only deal with the looming outside threat, but also the arrival of Julia's ex-boyfriend, Tipo (Miguel Noguera), and her neighbour, Ángel (Carlos Areces).

eOne Brings Girls Gone Dead and Extraterrestrial Home This July
Two more much talked about genre flicks are on their way home this July courtesy of the lovable loonies over at eOne, and we've got the scoop on each so you can plan ahead for your purchases. We're good like that.

From the Press Release

In the year of our pending apocalypse, Entertainment One and Focus World are excited to bring to home audiences Extraterrestrial, a sexy, darkly hilarious and apocalyptic new sci-fi comedy from Nacho Vigalondo, the acclaimed Spanish director of Timecrimes (now being remade into a major motion picture by Dreamworks).

When groggy and hung-over Julio (Julián Villagrán) wakes up in a strange apartment after a night of partying, he’s pleasantly surprised to discover it belongs to a beautiful one-night stand he can’t remember – Julia (Michelle Jenner). What’s already an awkward situation is made even more so when they discover giant flying saucers hovering above the now-deserted city.

[Review] Extraterrestrial
You wake in a strange place without memory of arriving. You see light’s curved shadows on the wall through clouded eyes while a chorus of clanging is heard in the next room. Disoriented, mildly frightened, and without a clue to what is going on, you’re lost trying to recall the erased minutes of an alcohol-infused evening eerily similar to a crackpot’s account of alien abduction. But rather than a greyed creature with probe in hand, the figure moving in the kitchen is an attractive young woman wearing only a t-shirt. As startled as you by the circumstances of your cohabitation, the realization of what more than likely transpired in your drunken haze only escalates a palpable awkwardness further. A one-night stand that forgot to end, your embarrassed goodbyes are interrupted after discovering the spaceship hovering outside the window.

This is our introduction to Julio (Julián Villagrán) and...

Us Trailer & Poster For Nacho Vigalondo’s Sci-Fi Comedy ‘Extraterrestrial’
Following up his excellent time-travel drama Timecrimes, everyone will finally be able to see the next film from Nacho Vigalondo. Extraterrestrial is a science-fiction film of sorts, but the kind you won’t find in your local multiplex. Favoring characters, this film is much more about relationships. While the ending is muddled and unsatisfying, but the journey is a fun one and one can read my Tiff review here.

Focus has now announced a VOD premiere this summer, along with a limited release backed by the newfangled Tugg system, where one can demand a screening in their hometown. We’ve also got a new trailer and poster, with the former selling it like some sort of sitcom. Check it out below via Apple for the film starring Julian Villagran, Michelle Jenner, Raul Cimas, Carlos Areces and Miguel Noguera.

Synopsis:

From Focus Features, the premiere global brand in original and daring cinema,...

Trailer for Nacho Vigalondo's Extraterrestrial
If you have not seen Nacho Vigalondo's Timecrimes, then literally stop reading this and seek it out. Today we have the full trailer for his next film Extraterrestrial, thanks to BleedingCool. The film looks to be another great genre film, and reminds me a bit of Signs mixed with Shaun of the Dead.

Here is the descripton from Tiff:

Nacho Vigalondo has already captivated audiences by blending genres in his relentlessly inventive debut feature, Timecrimes. For his follow-up Extraterrestrial, an ingenious take on the alien-invasion film, Vigalondo skilfully merges science fiction and romantic comedy — along with a wicked streak of gallows humour — to shed light on some of the less convivial elements of human behaviour.

Strangers Julio (Julián Villagrán) and Julia (Michelle Jenner) wake up beside one another in Julia’s apartment, groggy, hungover and unsure how they met. Julia is about to send Julio on...

Trailer For ‘Extraterrestrial,’ a Sci-Fi Comedy From ‘Timecrimes’ Director Nacho Vigalondo
After his excellent time-travel film Timecrimes, Nacho Vigalondo has changed things up for his next project, Extraterrestrial. I had the chance to check it out at Tiff (review here), where I had fun with the comedic elements, as this film is much more about relationships than science-fiction. The ending is muddled and unsatisfying, but the journey is a fun one.

We have a new trailer today (via Bleeding Cool) which provides our first subtitled look at the film for English-language audiences. It does a good job at conveying the best elements, the back-and-forth relationship with our male lead and the female, whose house he wakes up in. Check it out below for the film starring Julian Villagran, Michelle Jenner, Raul Cimas, Carlos Areces and Miguel Noguera.

Plot:

Strangers Julio (Julián Villagrán) and Julia (Michelle Jenner) wake up beside one another in Julia’s apartment, groggy, hungover and unsure how they met.

Extraterrestre (2011) Teaser Trailer: Nacho Vigalondo, Julián Villagrán, Michelle Jenner
Extraterrestre Teaser Trailer. Nacho Vigalondo‘s Extraterrestre (2011) teaser trailer stars Julián Villagrán, Michelle Jenner, Carlos Areces, Raúl Cimas, and Miguel Noguera. Extraterrestre‘s plot synopsis: “Everyone knows what to do if one morning the sky would be absolutely full of UFOs: run as fast as you can. However, what would happen if the invasion started while you are in the flat of the girl of your dreams, the one you have just met?”

This is certainly one quirky looking film: romance, black comedy, and science fiction mixed together. If its balanced it could be entertaining.

More on the plot of Extraterrestre:

“Julio wakes up – horribly hungover and with no memory of the night before – next to a mindblowingly sexy girl, in a stunning apartment. She wants him to get out now but the alien invasion that’s just begun outside is the perfect excuse for Julio to stay.”

First Poster, Images and Plot Clarity in Pseudo-Comedy 'Extraterrestre'
Who's the actual alien in Timecrimes director Nacho Vigalondo's Extraterrestre? That's the comedic spin put to his Spanish-language thriller that's being sold at the ongoing Cannes market. Starring Michelle Jenner, Carlos Areces, Julián Villagrán, Raúl Cimas and Miguel Noguera, Bloody Disgusting scored not only the first official poster, but three stills from the flick that brings new meaning to "home invasion." "There's only one sane response when you wake up to a sky full of alien invaders - run like hell. But what do you do if the invasion starts when you've just met the girl of your dreams? Julio wakes up - horribly hungover and with no memory of the night before - next to a mindblowingly sexy girl, in a stunning apartment. New Teaser Art: Nacho Vigalondo's Extraterrestre
We've been talking about Nacho (Timecrimes) Vigalondo's alien-fueled next film, Extraterrestre, for a few months now with the last time bringing some really cool teaser one-sheets. This time? Eh, not so much.

Big thanks to DC reader Mark for giving us the heads up that over on Vigalondo's Twitter page the director posted some brand new, shall we say, less than stellar artwork in promotion of the movie. Dig on it below along with the previous goodies.

Extraterrestre stars Michelle Jenner (Faust, Spanish Movie), Carlos Areces, Julián Villagrán, Raúl Cimas (Spanish Movie), and Miguel Noguera.

Synopsis

Teaser Posters For ‘Extraterrestrial’ Online
Two mysterious but fun posters have emerged online for Timecrimes director Nacho Vigalondo’s latest flick, Extraterrestrial (Extraterrestre) Have you guessed what it’s about yet? The teaser posters feature a video camera capturing a flying saucer and the other one is a retro Space Invaders homage.

There is little known about the plot and there’s been two synopses released that don’t correlate! Here’s the latest one featured on Bloody Disgusting:

Everyone knows what to do if one morning the sky would be absolutely full of UFOs: run as fast as you can. However, what would happen if the invasion started while you are in the flat of the girl of your dreams, the one you have just met?

But apparently, The Playlist have it the story focused on people:

“who experience a global alien invasion without even knowing it has happened, by listening to rumors, or engaging in pointless activities.
