This Netflix Horror Puts a Vampiric Spin on a Jodie Foster Thriller
Image
Snakes on a plane? Thats old history. Netflix's 2021 German-British co-production Blood Red Sky houses a ludicrous yet unbeatable premise: humans trapped on a transatlantic flight with free-roaming feral vampires. To that end, Blood Red Sky combines elements of Jodie Fosters 2005 psychological thriller Flightplan with the monster-evading claustrophobia of Train to Busan. Viewers certainly turned into the supernatural horror-action-thriller hybrid upon its debut. Blood Red Sky scored over 50M global views in less than a month, making it the streamer's most-watched German program ever (as of 2021). Iron-clad in its appeal, satisfactorily frightening, and surprisingly sad, Blood Red Sky does well by that "vampires on a plane" logline by rejecting satire. In the age of What We Do in the Shadows, the film is more somber than the conceit might suggest, its strengths lying in its build from a slow-burn psychological thriller into a gruesome bloodbath grounded by a mother's love...

The Signal Cast & Character Guide
Image
The limited series The Signal features an intriguing international cast. The German sci-fi show landed on Netflix's U.S. Top 10 during the week it premiered. Florian David Fitz, Peri Baumeister, and Yuna Bennett are key cast members.

The The Signal cast is chock-full of unique international talent. The show, which is called Das Signal in the original German, is a limited series that premiered on Netflix in March 2024. While it has a small core cast, the science fiction drama features quite a few interlocking characters in a story that takes place across multiple timelines.

The Netflix sci-fi show has become a crossover hit, trending outside of its native Germany. During its first week on the platform, it landed on the service's Top 10 chart in the U.S. alongside English-language hits including The Gentlemen and Avatar: The Last Airbender. However, because it is an international production, many of its cast...

Every TV Show Coming to Netflix in March 2024
Image
Netflix is well known for its popular original TV series, and the shows slated for release next month are likely to be no exception. While three of the platform’s offerings happen to be non-English language shows, their subject matter should be more than enough to entice English-language audiences to check them out. However, if such a prospect isn’t alluring, a handful of other shows are worth checking out.

Fans of Guy Ritchie classics will want to add his latest series, starring Theo James, to their watchlist. However, science fiction lovers will also have two series to enjoy, each exploring a different kind of discovery in outer space. For audiences who enjoy teen romantic dramas, a highly anticipated series is returning for a third season. In addition, fans of the heist genre will have a new series to check out as well. Here is every new original series coming...

The 13 Best (and Worst) ‘Dracula on a Boat’-Type Horror Movies, Ranked
Image
The new horror film “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” was dubbed “Dracula on a Boat” by social media users, and the twist on the chapter from Bram Stoker’s iconic horror novel definitely did deliver on the premise of the age-old vampire feasting on the crew of an unlucky ship.

Introducing a monster of any kind — alien, werewolf, zombies — to a vehicle that can’t stop and can’t let anyone off is a tried-and-true horror formula. Here are some of the movies where the combo of “creature” + “claustrophobic form of transportation” worked and some where it ran aground.

Five Monstrous Vampire Movies to Stream This Week
Image
This week’s new horror releases bring The Last Voyage of the Demeter, based on “The Captain’s Log” chapter from Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It features the iconic vampire at his most monstrous as he lurks about the schooner and preys upon the passengers and crew. Thanks to Dracula, much of cinema’s portrayal of the vampire leans romantic; their predatory tactics are often seductive, masking their monstrous nature until far too late. This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to monstrous vampires, the vicious bloodsuckers unafraid to show off their inner creature. These vampires are vicious in their kills and showcase great creature designs.

As always, here’s where you can stream them this week.

‘Sleeping Dog’ (2023) Netflix Series: A Character-Driven Thriller
Melika Foroutan, Max Riemelt, Carlo Ljubek, Luise von Finckh, and Peri Baumeister in Sleeping Dog (2023)
Sleeping Dog (Schlafende Hunde) is a German series starring Max Riemelt. Created by Oded Davidoff and Noah Stollman, this entertaining thriller takes us into the world of lawyers, detectives, criminals, and unsolved cases.

It is perfect for those who seek a well-crafted police intrigue, with charismatic characters and a corollary story, primarily well-told in its entirety.

Plot

A new death awakens disturbing doubts about an old case supposedly closed. A former policeman who now lives on the street sets out to uncover the truth.

About the Series

“A Good Script” is the primary strength of “Sleeping Dog” built on well-constructed, real, and charismatic characters in a story that knows precisely what fascinating history to tell and how to make everything surrounding the main axis interesting.

Technically, it does not strive for aesthetics or the treatment of shots. There is a lot of handheld camera work, many sequences that want to be real and natural,...

The plane hijacking / vampire film only released on July 23 and will reach the benchmark within its its first 28 days on the platform.

Blood Red Sky Interview with Director / Co-Writer Peter Thorwarth
Image
Coming to Netflix on July 23rd is Blood Red Sky, a compelling horror / thriller set on a passenger plane with some incredible performances and practical makeup effects! I recently had the opportunity to speak with director and co-written by Peter Thorwarth, who told me about the origins of this project, working with Peri Baumeister, and bringing the movie's vampire to life:

I wanted to start by learning more about the origins of this project. What sparked this idea for a horror movie set on a passenger flight?

It started when I was sitting on a transatlantic night flight. I was staring out the window and was thinking, "Okay, if I were a vampire, I’d have to organize myself, and take a night flight. When this gets hijacked, and the hijackers turn the plane around and fly backwards towards the rising sun, I have a problem."

Then I started thinking,...

‘Blood Red Sky’ Review: Netflix’s Airplane Hijacking Thriller Never Makes Good on Its Wild Twist
Image
In the grand tradition of “Deep Rising” and “From Dusk Till Dawn,” Peter Thorwarth’s “Blood Red Sky” is a hijacking thriller that — at just the right moment — is suddenly hijacked itself, as the bad guys realize that they’re in a very different movie than the one for which they signed up. Except that “Blood Red Sky” doesn’t find just the right moment; this undercooked, overlong piece of genre-blurring German schlock hardly even seems to look for it. On the contrary, this midsummer Netflix release drops its big twist with all the panache of an incidental detail, one that requires too much backstory and offers too little excitement in return. And so what could’ve been a fun chimera that someone Frankensteined together from two wildly different films instead becomes

“Blood Red Sky” is an emergency mode from the minute it starts; we know that something went screwy...

Full Trailer for 'Blood Red Sky' Vampire Woman on an Airplane Film
Carl Anton Koch and Peri Baumeister in Blood Red Sky (2021)
"Evil is within you. You can't control it." Netflix has debuted the full-length official trailer for the German horror thriller Blood Red Sky, which is pretty much Vampire(s) on a Plane (instead of Snakes). A woman with a mysterious illness is forced into action when a group of terrorists attempt to hijack a transatlantic overnight flight. To protect her son she will have to reveal her dark secret, and unleash the inner vampire monster she has fought to hide. The big twist is that she is the "good guy", sort of, not the big bad vampire - it's hijackers versus her. Which is seriously a killer concept. Starring Peri Baumeister as Nadja, joined by Kais Setti, Alexander Scheer, Dominic Purcell, Graham McTavish, Roland Møller, Chidi Ajufo. This looks like wicked cool vampire entertainment, but not sure it's going to be that memorable by the end. Here's the full-length trailer...

‘Blood Red Sky’ Trailer: Vampires Terrorize A Plane

When a group of terrorists hijacks an overnight transatlantic flight, a mysteriously ill woman must unleash a monstrous secret to protect her young son. How is that for a premise? And well, that quickly transforms into what is essentially, vampires on a plane. Directed by Peter Thorwarth and starring Peri Baumeister, Roland Møller, and Dominic Purcell, “Blood Red Sky” is a German action suspense horror film coming to Netflix soon.

Blood Red Sky Trailer Puts Vampires on a Plane for a Transatlantic Blood Bath
Image
It's vampires on a plane in the first trailer for Netflix's upcoming suspense movie, Blood Red Sky, which finds a woman with a mysterious illness who must fight to protect her son when terrorists take over her plane. Of course, because this is a high-concept horror movie, the illness can only be vampirism of zombie-infection, thankfully (?) it's the former, with the woman unleashing the inner monster she has fought to hide.

The deliciously high concept behind Blood Red Sky should help take cinematic vampires to dizzying new heights, with the vampire on a plane no doubt causing all manner of bloodshed and chaos at 30,000 feet. The claustrophobia of the cabin is presented well in the footage, as we feel the walls closing in on the kidnapped passengers. Of course, this will take a violent turn of a different nature when the vampire is released, quickly turning the terrorists from predators into prey.

Carl Anton Koch and Peri Baumeister in Blood Red Sky (2021)
Vampire on a Plane! First Teaser Trailer for 'Blood Red Sky' Horror
Carl Anton Koch and Peri Baumeister in Blood Red Sky (2021)
"You have to look after my son." Netflix has revealed the first teaser trailer for a new horror thriller titled Blood Red Sky, pretty much Vampire(s) on a Plane (instead of Snakes). The twist is that the protagonist in here is the vampire, not the bad guy this time around. A woman with a mysterious illness is forced into action when a group of terrorists attempt to hijack a transatlantic overnight flight. To protect her son she will have to reveal a dark secret, and unleash the inner vampire monster she has fought to hide. Starring Peri Baumeister as Nadja; she's joined by Kais Setti, Alexander Scheer, Dominic Purcell, Graham McTavish, Roland Møller, and Chidi Ajufo. This is a good teaser - setting up the stakes and not giving away too much. But from the looks of it, this is either going to be terrible or extra gnarly. Check it out below.

'Wetlands' Trailer Delves Into the Secret Life of a Teenage Girl
Carla Juri in Wetlands (2013)
A teenager obsessed with bodily fluids, experimentation and tampon-swapping is put on display in the first trailer for Wetlands. Carla Juri stars as Helen, an unorthodox young girl who begins to flirt with a handsome male nurse while scheming with her friend Corinna to reunite her parents.

Christoph Letkowski, Marlen Kruse, Meret Becker and Axel Milberg co-star in this adaptation of Charlotte Roche's novel, arriving in limited release September 5 from Strand Releasing.

Bodily fluid-obsessed teenager Helen describes herself as a living hygiene experiment. After an intimate shaving accident, she ends up stuck in the hospital, where she skateboards through the halls and reminisces about her culinary experiments, the seductive powers of her unwashed scent, and used-tampon swapping with her equally uninhibited best friend, Corinna. All the while, she charms a handsome male nurse with her nasty sex talk and schemes to reunite her mismatched parents.
