Following its audience award won in Berlin, Eva Libertad’s Deaf added four more prizes at the 2025 Malaga Film Festival (March 14-23) including best Spanish film and the audience award.

Libertad’s debut follows the relationship between a deaf woman and her hearing boyfriend, which is put under strain by a new baby, and stars the director’s sister, Miriam Garlo, and Álvaro Cervantes. They both won Malaga’s acting prizes ex aequo alongside Ángela Cervantes for Fury and Mario Casas for Away, respectively.

The Málaga Film Festival unveiled winners from its various lineups this afternoon, where Eva Libertad’s “Deaf” walked away with a fest-best four prizes, including best actress (Miriam Garlo), actor (Álvaro Cervantes), the audience award and best picture.

Libertad’s debut feature is an expansion of the eponymous Goya-nominated short she co-directed with Nuria Muñoz, starring her sister Garlo, an acclaimed deaf actress. The film tells the story of Angela (Garlo), a pregnant deaf woman, and Hector (Cervantes), her hearing partner. Pregnancy brings to the surface her fears about motherhood and how she will be able to communicate with her daughter. The arrival of the girl generates a crisis in the couple and leads Angela to face the upbringing of her daughter in a world that is not made for her.

Gemma Blasco makes her feature debut with Spanish drama “Fury,” the tale of a young woman trying to cope with a traumatic experience and who finds a channel for her rage on the stage.

Having just premiered at South By Southwest in Austin, “Fury” unspools in competition at the Malaga Film Festival on Wednesday.

Written by Blasco and Eva Pauné, the film follows Alex, a young woman, played by Ángela Cervantes, trying to come to terms with a violent assault she suffers at a New Year’s Eve party. In the process she finds a much needed emotional outlet on the stage embodying the vengeful character of Medea in a production of Euripides’ Greek tragedy. She also seeks solace by confiding in her brother Adrián, played by Àlex Monner (“The Next Skin“), only to see him consumed by rage and a thirst for revenge.

The world premiere of Spanish social drama La Deuda, thethird feature from actor-director Daniel Guzmán, will open the Malaga International Film Festival (Miff) on March 14.

Guzmán stars as a man living with an elderly woman, plaayed by Itziar Ituño, in a city apartment, while she struggles with her health and he has to confront a precarious job situation. The film is produced by Spain’s Acqu y Alli Films.La Deudatranslates as ‘The Debt’ but no English-language title has been confirmed.

El 28 Festival de Málaga, que se celebra del 14 al 23 de marzo, ha anunciado las primeras películas que competirán por la ansiada Biznaga de Oro. Y recordemos que el año pasado, el galardón recayó en Segundo premio, de Isaki Lacuesta y Pol Rodríguez, y este fue solo el primero de los muchos reconocimientos –a la espera de ver qué se lleva en los Goya– de la película elegida (pero no nominada) para representar a España en los Óscar 2025.

Barcelona-based outlet Filmax has boarded Fury, the first fiction feature by Gemma Blasco and will also release the film in Spain.

Produced by Ringo Media and starring Alex Monner, a Screen Spain Star of Tomorrow, Fury is about the impact of a New Years’ Eve sexual assault on a young actress and her brother.

Blasco has previously directed short films and the experimental film El Zoo.

The project was developed at the Torino Film Lab Extended, New Horizons Studio+, Cima Mentoring, Dama Ayuda and D’A Final Cut.

The list of talents will again be curated by Screen’s Spain correspondent Elisabet Cabeza.

Filmax has announced the first key sale for its award-winning Spanish drama “Mediterráneo: The Law of the Sea” to Adler Entertainment in Italy, hot off the heels of an Audience Award at the Rome Film Festival.

News of the deal comes as Filmax presents “Mediterráneo: The Law of the Sea” at this week’s American Film Market.

Marcel Barrena, a filmmaker with a knack for retelling true stories on the big screen in both documentary and biographical films such as “Little World” and “100 Meters,” directed the film that features Eduard Fernández (“Smoke and Mirrors”), Dani Rovira (“100 Meters”), Anna Castillo (“Holy Camp!”), Sergi López (“Rifkin’s Festival”), Àlex Monner (“The Next Skin”) and Melika Foroutan (“Pari”).

The movie is one highlight in Netflix’s first announcement of a production-distribution slate focused entirely on Spanish original movies. The eight titles it profiles that are moving into production or set for release in 2021 and 2022 are a sign of Netflix ramping up its production of Spanish movies as part of its bet on Spanish scripted TV and movies, with Spain punching above its weight in the number of Netflix originals compared to Spanish subscribers. This reminded me of Con Air at first glance, but with a big prison bus driving through winter in Spain. [Rec]³ Génesis is the latest film from Spanish director Paco Plaza. This most recent title in the [Rec] series is a prequel to the first two films and in the trailer below, get set to see a worst case scenario for a wedding. No, the cake does not tip over. However, a group of the undead take over the dance floor in bloody fashion. The trailer is in Spanish, but the titles invite you to "experience fear!" With the Royal Wedding dominating the news, it only seems fitting that '[Rec] 3: Genesis' would contribute a wedding of its own.
