During the first public impeachment inquiry hearing Wednesday morning, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State George Kent explained how valuable an invitation to the White House is for foreign heads of state. “New leaders, particular countries that are trying to have good footing in the international arena see a meeting with the U.S. president in the Oval Office at the White House as the ultimate sign of endorsement and support from the United States,” he said.

As expected, President Trump’s decision to pull U.S. troops away from the Syria-Turkey border, effectively endorsing a Turkish assault on the U.S.-allied Kurds occupying northern Syria, has been a disaster. Trump made the call last Sunday after a phone call with Turkish President Recep Erdoğan, and without consulting the Pentagon or Congress. Less than a week later, Trump ordered the removal all U.S. troops from the region, further endangering the Kurdish people, strengthening Isis, and ceding influence to some of America’s chief adversaries. In return,...

On Sunday, President Trump spoke on the phone with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. On Sunday night, the White House announced the United States will endorse a Turkish military offensive across Turkey’s border with Syria, a de facto sign off on attacks of the U.S.-allied Kurds who have helped battle Isis in the region. To facilitate the offensive, the U.S. will pull its troops out of the area, the White House added. On Monday, that withdrawal was set into motion.

On Saturday, Brett McGurk, special presidential envoy to the coalition fighting Isis, resigned in response to President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw troops from Syria. He follows Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, who resigned earlier in the week, citing the same reason. McGurk was originally planning to leave the administration in early 2019, but will now depart on December 31.
Trump, in an attempt to downplay the news, tweeted on Saturday evening that he does not know McGurk and accused him of being a “grandstander” by resigning in this fashion.

President Donald Trump tweeted Saturday that he was “working hard” in the White House, the morning after the U.S. government was forced to shut down for a third time in 2018 after last-ditch budget negotiations failed Friday night.
Trump this morning was focused on the shutdown, which impacts about one-fourth of federal operations, as well as his decision earlier in the week to pull U.S. troops out of Syria, a move that might have been the last straw for Defense Secretary James Mattis, who resigned soon after Trump announced the plan.
“I am in the White House, working hard,” Potus wrote this morning (see his tweets below). “News reports concerning the Shutdown and Syria are mostly Fake.”
He later attacked the “fake news” over the way the media reported the resignations of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and U.S. Envoy in the fight against Isis Brett McGurk over Trump’s...
