If there’s anything fans were mad about in Season 8 of Game of Thrones, it is the fact that Bran Stark became the ruler of Westeros. As George R.R. Martin is still writing The Winds of Winter, many hope he’ll give a different ending, perhaps make someone more convincing to take the crown.
The thing is, the author already told us that he wanted Bran to be king, at least that’s what Isaac Hempstead Wright claimed, so why would he say that and have a different story in his book? Most certainly, Bran is destined to become the king. Or not? Let’s find out.
Why will Bran Stark still be king in George R.R. Martin’s books?

It’s hard to think of anyone from the Game of Thrones cast who was not perfect for their role. Even the child actors did an incredible job portraying their characters, no matter how heavy their scenes were. Finding these young stars who would fill the shoes of the children’s roles was the most daunting part of the casting process.
It’s reasonable, though, because child actors are still learning the ropes of the craft, and they haven’t had that much experience playing roles that deal with a lot of traumatic scenes. In most school plays and drama classes, young thespians often perform with animated gestures and exaggerated emotions, something that does not fit in the drama of Westeros.

Fans got to know some fascinating characters throughout the eight-season run of Game of Thrones. They had terrific character development and their arcs were satisfying from start to finish. Then there were others who should have been much bigger and better than they were hyped up to be, making them some of the most overrated characters of the series.
Yes, some of these characters were even main characters for all eight seasons. By the end of the show, it’s hard to understand why we rooted for them so much, or even why the series continued to focus on them when their storylines ended up meaning so little. Follow us into the world of potentially unpopular opinions as we look at the most overrated characters from Game of Thrones.

It's not a particularly unpopular opinion to say that "Game of Thrones" didn't have the best ending (though I'll say that some people right here at /Film might disagree with me). The series, which is based on George R.R. Martin's novel series "A Song of Ice and Fire," came to a close after eight seasons in May of 2019 not with a bang, but with a piteous whimper. So, do showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have any regrets? Yes, apparently — but their regrets aren't related to the series finale "The Iron Throne" at all!
In a January 2024 story for The Hollywood Reporter, Benioff and Weiss said they had one major shared regret: that Mord the Jailer, a small character seen in the show's first season who was played by Ciaran Bermingham, never returned. "One thing I know I wish we could have done is there's the character Mord the Jailer,...

No one ever said they were happy to see Bran Stark become the king of Westeros after an eight-season run of Game of Thrones. It’s even more infuriating that it was George R.R. Martin’s idea, but perhaps he’s got a good reason why he wanted the character to become the most powerful figure in the story.
When Bran became the Three-Eyed Raven, it was obvious that he was no longer himself anymore. The way he looked and spoke, even the way he thinks was nowhere near how the young Bran we met in the earlier seasons acted.
Bran Stark was no longer himself after he supposedly died in Game of Thrones
We recall how Isaac Hempstead Wright’s character often dismissed people who called him by his name. Once, Littlefinger addressed him as Lord Stark, and he did not like it. Then, when Meera confronted him and called him Bran,...

There’s always been something different about the Starks in George R.R. Martin’s world, the power, the unshakable presence. But of them all, Bran Stark stands apart. As Game of Thrones progressed, Bran didn’t just mature he became something entirely other.
By the end of season six, he had assumed the mantle of the Three-Eyed Raven, a being with the ability to see across time. With that transformation, I began to suspect that Bran wasn’t just a passive observer of Westeros’ history; he might be its most influential player. And now, a theory rooted in The Winds of Winter might finally confirm what I’ve long believed, that this Stark may be the true architect of everything evil in Westeros.

Author George R.R. Martin provided much of the source material that became the globally renowned fantasy drama Game of Thrones. The series ended on a lackluster note after eight seasons, by which point most of the material from Martin’s books had been expended, leaving the showrunner to chart unknown territories.
During an interview, actor Isaac Hempstead-Wright discussed the show’s surprising ending and whether it would align with Martin’s plans for Winds of Winter and the final book in his epic saga. The actor suggested that at least one key plot point from the series is likely to be made canon by Martin, and here is what he had to say.

There are dozens of key moments in the history of "A Song of Ice and Fire" that, had they gone another way, could've put characters on very different paths. What if Robb Stark had stuck to his original wedding plans? What if Bran had listened to his mother and not gone climbing? What if Ned Stark had taken the time to hear out the deserter from the Night's Watch who claimed that White Walkers were the real deal? These are all hypotheticals that could've changed "Game of Thrones" drastically, but one huge alteration that author George R. R. Martin had genuinely considered was having a time jump in the middle of a pivotal moment of his epic story.
Amidst all the deception, death, and dragons, Martin played with the idea of giving his characters a breather between "A Storm of Swords" and "A Feast for Crows," the third and fourth...

You could write a book about all the hatred the final season of "Game of Thrones" received, and it would still come out sooner than George R.R. Martin's "The Winds of Winter." Even Littlefinger actor Aidan Gillen had some unpopular opinions about how things wrapped up in the closing chapter, and Gwendoline Christie believed that season 8 was "designed to break" the cast.
It didn't have to be that way, though. In fact, the creator of the Seven Kingdoms himself revealed that requests were made to HBO to stretch "Game of Thrones" beyond its eighth season, which ended with only six episodes instead of the typical 10. Speaking to The Wall Street Journal about past negotiations that didn't go as planned, Martin recalled, "I was saying it needs to be 10 seasons at least and maybe 12, 13. I lost that one."

Game of Thrones served up dragons, undead armies, and more twisted family trees than anyone asked for, but behind the swords and chaos, something oddly wholesome was brewing. Long before Arya was flipping daggers and Sansa was outmaneuvering lords, 12-year-old Maisie Williams met 13-year-old Sophie Turner at a casting session in 2009, and the spark was instant. They didn’t just land roles as the Stark sisters; they practically adopted each other in real life.
From awkward teen years spent on set to stealing scenes and red carpets, their bond only got stronger. Matching tattoos? Check. Finishing each other’s jokes? Constantly. Total friendship goals, even when their on-screen characters were worlds apart.
While Westeros was burning, their sisterhood stayed fireproof. But behind all the love and loyalty, the show wasn’t exactly all hugs and hugs. Some cast tensions quietly simmered for years. And yep, it got bad enough that...

As "Severance" wraps its second season for Apple+, traumatized theorists and shippers on deck slip into the familiar rhythms of the long wait for new adventures in Lumon's cultish underbelly. Scenes will be inspected for clues that might lead us astray, dialogue pored over for foreshadowing we missed the first time around, and fan artists will fill their sketchbooks with motion studies Mr. Milchick's (Tramell Tillman) fantastic yet eerie turn as a marching band leader.
But at least we know we're going to get that future season. Other fans are sometimes not that lucky. Or their luck lands them a finale with curves so far out of left field that there's nothing to do but argue over it. For months. The months become years. Sometimes the years become decades. And yet the fandom argues. It's not a new phenomena, since fans have found things to argue about in fiction for centuries.

Whether you absolutely love or hate the "Game of Throne" finale, one thing is for certain: a lot of questions were left unanswered. Sure, Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) had become the Three-Eyed Raven and also King of Westeros, and his sister Sansa (Sophie Turner) was Queen in the North, but what became of the tragic end of the Targaryen dynasty? After Jon Snow, the secret Targaryen (played by Kit Harington), killed his lover-aunt Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), her last surviving dragon, Drogon, melted the Iron Throne with a great burst of dragonflame, picked up Dany's body, and flew off across the Narrow Sea. Jon Snow went back to the Wall to resume his work with the Night's Watch and pout for the rest of his days, but audiences never got a chance to see what happened with Drogon and Dany, leaving their exact fates a mystery.

For the longest time, fans had one enduring theory about Bran Stark—he would warg into a dragon. As the new Three-Eyed Raven, being a warg and a greenseer makes him the most formidable character in George R.R. Martin’s story. He can enter and control the minds of other creatures, which is a very handy skill when you are fighting an army of the undead.
The intriguing part here is that we have not yet seen the extent of Bran’s power. He was only able to warg on ravens and wolves, as well as control Hodor’s mind, and Game of Thrones failed to explore this aspect further due to time and budget constraints.

In any case, we have The Winds of Winter to tackle this, so let’s cross our fingers Martin’s going to get it done at the soonest.

We're told over and over again throughout "Game of Thrones" that Jon Snow's whole deal is "being a bastard." Played by Kit Harington, Jon shows up in the pilot as the apparent bastard son of the honorable Ned Stark (Sean Bean), the patriarch of House Stark in the northern reaches of Westeros, and some random tavern wench. But when you learn more about Ned and his nature, the idea that Jon could possibly be the result of an affair seems sort of ludicrous. Despite that, Jon is constantly met with hostility from Ned's wife Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley), who thinks Jon is a reminder of Ned's greatest misstep as a husband, and he's not treated with as much kindness and respect...

Every Game of Thrones fan knows the tale about the pilot episode that never saw the light of day. These days, fans should be familiar with many points in Westerosi history. Not only is there Game of Thrones, but House of the Dragonexplores a different timeframe in the Seven Kingdoms, and later this year, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will take on another generation. While each story offers something different, they are, in some ways, the same. George R. R. Martin often uses the extensive history of his world to foreshadow his storylines. For proof, just look at the similarities between House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones, from the royal family's bastards trying to pass as legitimate heirs to a former Hand of the King helping his daughter crown her children. These parallels are used so often that, even once Game of Thrones passes the books, the series shows history repeating itself, like Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) becoming King over his older brother (cousin?) Jon (Kit Harington...

One of the things that made Game of Thrones so great was the ability to chat with fellow fans about various theories. Many of these theories came up thanks to the book series A Song of Ice and Fire by author George R.R. Martin, while others developed from the series itself.
There were certainly plenty of fan theories that did come true. For example, many fans theorizes that Jon Snow was actually the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen long before it was officially confirmed onscreen. However, plenty of other theories didn’t end up playing out as expected.

This article contains spoilers for many major fantasy TV shows! For every unforgettable moment in a fantasy TV show, there are just as many controversial moments that push viewers to their breaking point. Even the most popular fantastical TV series in history have included scenes that were so polarizing that audiences stop watching the show altogether. Typically, these plot points revolve around the introduction or exit of characters, as this can dramatically alter the series' dynamic and be devastating to witness. TV deaths often spark outrage when viewers feel that the character didn't deserve to be killed off and still had more to contribute.
There are many fantasy TV scenes that make no sense, but this is more excusable, as the complex magic systems and world-building in speculative fiction shows can become confusing. However, when a series makes a concrete and avoidable choice that alienates audience members, it's much more difficult to accept this.

Fantasy is a versatile genre since the creation of new worlds and magic systems allows writers and creators to establish new rules and logic that suit the storyline. However, this doesn't mean that fantasy TV shows are immune from adding plot points that make no sense and don't help further the overall narrative. Many of these choices have to do with the character's choices being inconsistent or the series breaking its own rules about how the fantastical elements work. Since speculative fiction fans are willing to suspend their disbelief, these shows sometimes push the boundaries of logic too far.
There are plenty of fantasy movie scenes that make no sense, and TV series are just as susceptible to these mistakes. Often, these confusing moments happen because there are so many contradicting storylines or there's an external element that's out of the writers' control. To compensate for actors suddenly leaving or...

Game of Thrones has established itself as one of the greatest TV series of all time, thanks to its phenomenal world-building spanning eight seasons (only seven of which are good). It’s always exciting when a TV show takes a massive risk that really pays off, but it can be insanely frustrating when these surprising writing decisions fall flat on their face. While huge twists, impulsive character decisions, or unusual storytelling choices can keep things interesting, they also have the potential to alienate audiences and lead to storylines that the writers opt to quietly discard rather than continue telling an unpopular plot. This has been a problem across comedy, drama, and even fantasy series that have tried something new with their storyline, only to have viewers flat-out reject the risk.
Many of the best TV shows of all time have taken massive risks, only for them to not work out and have to backtrack on their storylines. This has seen previously deceased characters inexplicably return to life, established backstories being badly rewritten, or even final seasons that ruined the legacy...

How Did Isaac Hempstead Feel About Game of Thrones Season 8 Script? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Game of Thrones, the iconic historical show that had us all on the edge of our seats for eight epic seasons, ended with a jaw-dropping twist and some disappointments. Isaac Hempstead-Wright, who played Bran Stark, was in disbelief when he first read the script, thinking it was a prank.
Bran, the quiet, mysterious Stark, ultimately claimed the Iron Throne, a shocking turn that even left Isaac scratching his head. With Daenerys gone and Jon Snow paying the price for her death, the power players of Westeros gathered to make a decision. Tyrion’s suggestion? Bran. After some family farewells, including Sansa ruling the North and Arya heading west, Bran’s unexpected rise to power wrapped up the saga.

To be a Game of Thrones fan is masochistic work. Because with every day that passes, the chances of ever seeing George R.R. Martin's written conclusion to his A Song of Ice and Fire series get smaller and smaller. Sure, the HBO iteration did, well, something with the author's road map and over-arching story plan. But whether or not it was a satisfying, nuanced ending to the story is another thing entirely, and up for contentious debate among fans.
The prolific-yet-meandering author has long brushed off worries about his completion of his Westerosi story as overblown. But in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the author admits that maybe those fans are right — maybe he won't finish the book. After all, as he admits: "Unfortunately, I am 13 years late."

Game of Thrones turned a number of actors into household names. We see the likes of Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, and Peter Dinklage everywhere. But other Game of Thrones cast members all but disappeared after their parts ended, and we need to see them more.
Some of the cast members chose to step back from acting. Others have just taken less visible roles, or maybe haven't any that are right for them. Here are five Game of Thrones cast members we would love to see back on our screens.

One popular fan theory about Daemon Targaryen may connect the dots regarding the Three-Eyed Raven in Game of Thrones. The final events in House of the Dragon Season 2 have given us lots of things to anticipate for the upcoming third installment, and one of them is the fate of the Rogue Prince.

The exciting thing about Daemon as a character in George Rr Martin’s Fire & Blood is that apart from being the most complex anti-hero in the story, he doesn’t have a proper conclusion after supposedly dying during the Battle Above the Gods Eye.

Oscar-winner Marcia Gay Harden is set to join a new gothic horror movie that will reunite two of Game of Thrones' biggest stars.
Per Deadline, Harden will join Sophie Turner and Kit Harington in a new horror film titled The Dreadful. The film also stars Laurence OFuarain (The Gentlemen) and Jonathan Howard (Thor: The Dark World). The film will reportedly be set during the War of the Roses, a period in which several civil wars were waged for control of the English throne. The Dreadful follows "Anne (Turner) and her sinister mother-in-law Morwen (Harden), who live a solitary, harsh life on the outskirts of society. But when a man (Harington) from their past returns, he sets off a sequence of horrifying events that become a turning point for Anne."

Sometimes, a television series delivers a shocking moment by killing off what may seem like a main character. While some of these may be done for shock value, sometimes, the show also needs to do it to push things forward. A major character's death has a significant impact on the plot. Ned Stark's death in the first season of Game of Thrones is a great example.
Not only does it start a war between the North and the South, but it also sets Game of Thrones in motion. Similarly, Lost too has a significant death early in the show that holds significance. However, like Ned Stark in Game of Thrones, television shows often choose a great or beloved character to maximize the impact of their death.

The fantasy drama Game of Thrones is considered one of the best TV series of all time, despite its divisive finale. Following its success on HBO, the network continued to bet on George R.R. Martin's works, and, at one point, a spin-off series starring Kit Harington's Jon Snow was in the works.
The main series ended in 2019 after eight seasons, and a Jon Snow follow-up was considered. Its status remained uncertain since the announcement, but now HBO boss Casey Bloys confirmed the series has been shelved after actor Kit Harington echoed the same sentiment earlier this year. However, he gave a hopeful answer about the character's future, Deadline reports.

The rumors are true: a Game of Thrones movie is now in the planning stages at HBO. Original author George R.R. Martin's criticism about the spinoff series, House of the Dragon, has also been addressed.
Recently, it was reported that a Game of Thrones film was in early development. Per Variety, this report has been confirmed by HBO and Max chief Casey Bloys during a press event on Tuesday. While it was stressed that the project is still in its infancy and not yet officially greenlit, Bloys teased that Martin is directly involved with the creative process. As long as there's a screenplay that everyone is happy with, then production on the movie will be able to move forward.

Game of Thrones catapulted many young stars into mainstream popularity. Among the most beloved faces in George R.R. Martin's epic fantasy series was Maisie Williams, who rose to prominence for her portrayal of the fiercely independent Arya Stark. Towards the end of the series, she is seen bidding farewell to Jon Snow and on the docks of King's Landing before sailing to the west of Westeros. Now, Martins new update hints that this open-ended storyline could easily be twisted into a new beginning for Arya Stark.

Major television deaths are almost always sad, but they're especially devastating when viewers barely get to spend time with the character in question. While the death of a longtime favorite dramatically impacts the show and its audience, the demise of smaller players can hit just as hard.
This is especially true when they've made a good impression, igniting hopes that they'll take on a more prominent role in the story. In some cases, they're met with an early end instead, leaving viewers to wonder what their character arc could have looked like if they'd lasted longer than a handful of episodes.

The fantasy genre shines on television, as the episodic nature of TV shows allows for plenty of time to focus on world-building and magic systems while still providing character development. However, all the moving parts and expectations surrounding fantasy TV series make it difficult for a show to hit the mark in every aspect of the story. Common issues arise with fantasy TV shows that continue for too long, running out of ideas and growing repetitive before the finale. In a perfect show, there can't be any major problems or too many moments that make viewers quit the series.
Many of the best fantasy TV shows of the 2020s are almost perfect and could prove themselves to be the best of the 21st century before their stories end. More often than not, great fantasy shows are based on books, giving the seasons structure and providing a strong storyline for the script.

Game of Thrones is one of the most successful shows in TV history, and it has an incredibly controversial ending. The uproar from fans when the final season aired in 2019 was as visceral a reaction as it gets. Many believed the creators ruined one of their favorite shows. For years, HBO had some of its greatest success because of Game of Thrones. The series was one of the most watched and most beloved TV shows, with many believing the show got better with every season. Only something so beloved could evoke such an intense reaction.
Even when the series had an occasional lull in performance, there was never any sense that fans didn't think it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. For instance, season five was criticized for being slowly paced, and yet that didn't seem to bother anyone too much because of how well the season ended. However,...

"Game of Thrones" had its share of recastings -- they were inevitable with a production and an ensemble as sprawling as the show had. The series had two Daario Naharises (Ed Skrein and then Michiel Huisman) and three Gregor Cleganes. After season 2, "Game of Thrones" also recast both of the younger Lannister-Baratheon siblings, Myrcella (Aimée Richardson and then future "First Omen" star Nell Tiger Free) and King Tommen (Callum Wharry and Dean Charles Chapman). Even Daenerys Targaryen was played by Tamzin Merchant, not Emilia Clarke, in the unaired (and then remade) "Game of Thrones" pilot.
One "Game of Thrones" recasting might have slipped your notice, though, because both successive actors were buried beneath make-up. That recasting would be the Night King, leader of the undead White Walkers. In seasons 4 and 5, the Night King was played by Welsh actor Richard Brake; you might recognize him as Joe Chill (murderer of Bruce Wayne's parents) from "Batman Begins,...

While it might come as a shock, sometimes, actors root for their own characters to be written off of a show. The reasons can be as simple as that they are bored or that they find the experience too demanding. Sometimes, they receive a better offer and have to give up their current post. However, not everyone who wants their character dead has their wish to come true.
Sophie Turner famously didn't want her Game of Thrones character to survive the show, but fans would later learn that Sansa becomes one of the few survivors who thrive in the game for power. Similarly, many actors have very specific ideas for their characters to be killed off. Sometimes, the show honors their idea. Other times, they get a different, shocking death.

The bells ringing in King's Landing is a sound associated with multiple things: horror, the death of a king, the city under siege, and Daenerys Targaryen and Drogon burning Westeros' capital to the ground. What they don't typically mean is surrender, as per Davos Seaworth himself, though that's what Game of Thrones season 8, episode 5 - fittingly titled "The Bells" - used them for. The sound was supposed to mark the end of Daenerys' attack, but instead spurred her on, leading to one of the most controversial parts of Game of Thrones' ending.
Given the bells ringing for "horror, a dead king, a city under siege," and, as Tyrion notes, a "wedding," comes from Varys as far back as Game of Thrones season 2, episode 9, "Blackwater," then it's certainly confusing why they were used that way ahead of Daenerys destroying King's Landing in season 8. But the idea itself - not only of Dany's villain turn and assault,...

"Game of Thrones" came to an end in May of 2019 — enraging fans with its lackluster final season — but people are still asking its stars, years later, if they'd consider returning to Westeros somehow. Sophie Turner — who made her industry debut playing Sansa Stark, a shrewd strategist and eldest daughter of the powerful Northern family House Stark.
While speaking to Variety about her newest project "Joan," interviewer K.J. Yossman brought up the show that made Turner famous, asking, "Could we ever see the return of Sansa Stark?" Turner basically said no, but also admitted she's curious about how the character would be faring today.
"Maybe," Turner said. "I mean, it would have to be the exact same cast and the exact same crew otherwise I wouldn't go back and that would just be season 9, and I don't think we're going to do a season 9, but,...

Fantasy TV shows can change quickly, and when big plot twists and narrative changes are written into the story, they have a major impact. The magic systems and rules of the realities that these fantastical worlds exist in allow the writers and creators to experiment with story and character dynamics, leading to episodes that change everything for the series. These episodes typically incorporate a tone shift and switch the show's focus to a new set of character dynamics. Altering a series so drastically can either save and prolong its run or be the beginning of the end for the show.
The fantasy TV shows that deserved more seasons rarely get the chance to reinvent themselves and adapt to significant change. However, a long-running series must quickly adjust when actors decide to leave the show or a detailed story arc has reached its end. While it can be daunting to take...
