George Santos has, finally, been kicked out of the House of Representatives.
The New York congressman — who repeatedly refused to resign in the face of his many scandals, including a federal criminal indictment — announced last month that he would no longer seek reelection in 2024 following the release of a damning House Ethics Committee report that found “substantial evidence” he had committed crimes.
The final vote to expel Santos was 311-114. Two-thirds of the House needed to vote in favor of the resolution for it to pass.

Rep. George Santos (R-NY) was expelled from Congress today, as enough Republicans joined with Democrats to oust the lawmaker who is facing criminal charges and a devastating ethics committee report.
The House vote came after GOP leaders announced their opposition to his ouster. That raised the prospect that he could survive the vote. But in the end, there were 311 votes to expel, well clearing the 2/3 threshold needed: 105 Republicans and 206 Democrats voted to oust him; 112 Republicans and two Democrats voted against the resolution. Two Democrats also voted present.
Santos, wearing a coat over his shoulders, left the House chamber before the vote was made official. With reporters chasing him, he got in a waiting car and left Capitol grounds. According to CNN, he said, “Why would I want to stay here? To hell with this place.”

Rep. George Santos (R-NY) faces the renewed prospect of being expelled from Congress, after a report from the House Ethics Committee concluded that he deceived donors, stole from his campaign and “sought to fraudulently exploit every aspect of his House candidacy for his own personal financial profit.”
The committee also unanimously recommended referral of the “substantial evidence” of potential criminal violations to the Justice Department.
Read the Ethics Committee report. Read the Ethics Committee investigative report.
Santos blasted the bipartisan report, writing on X/Twitter, that it was “a disgusting politicized smear that shows the depths of how low our federal government has sunk. Everyone who participated in this grave miscarriage of Justice should all be ashamed of themselves.” He said that he would not seek reelection to his seat next year “as my family deserves better than to be under the gun from the press all the time.

George Santos is a “dead man walking.” That’s how Brendan Buck, former press secretary to Republican House Speaker John Boehner and current political analyst, described the U.S. representative while on Tuesday night’s episode of “Alex Wagner Tonight.”
“The problem is George Santos, as we have seen, is not a stable person,” Buck said.
Buck emphasized that most representatives who get into situations where they know they will likely be convicted and “have no future” step down. “I just don’t know that we can trust George Santos is going to see that that clearly. He has really nothing to lose. He’s a dead man walking,” Buck said. “It wouldn’t surprise me is he resists all efforts to remove him. Even if he’s convicted it wouldn’t surprise me if he resists that.”
