Thailand is the setting for bloody horror in “Pernicious,” from Benetone Films. “Pernicious,” directed by James Cullen Bressack and written by Bressack and Taryn Hillin, will be in theaters and On Demand June 19. The film stars Emmy-nominated “Young and the Restless” actress Emily O’Brien as well as Ciara Hanna (“Power Rangers”) and Jackie Moore (“100 Ghost Street.” Just from the trailer alone, you can see that the claims of a “carnival for the eyes” and a “sexy, bloody, and heinous” by Dread Central and Horror News are extremely apt. Take a look at the trailer below the post and you’ll see just how horrifying this particular film is. “Pernicious” [ Read More ]

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by October Coast PR. **there are spoilers here. Director: James Cullen Bressack. Writers: James Cullen Bressack and Taryn Hillin. Cast: Ciara Hanna, Emily O'Brien and Jackie Moore. Pernicious is an indie horror feature from director James Cullen Bressack (Hate Crime). The film's title is synonymous with something that is harmful. And, the film follows several travellers in Thailand and the ghosts they meet. Based in supernatural superstition, Pernicious offers unpolished sound design, including Adr. The film also lifts much of its scares from Asian films of the past, including Ringu (1998) and Ju-on (2002). Though, the term scares is a misnomer as many of the potential horror elements are laughable. Overall, Pernicious is a cliche filled and disappointing indie horror outing. The film begins and stays with a trio of travellers. Alex (Ciarra Hanna) and Rachel (Jackie Moore) are sisters, while Julia (Emily O'Brien) is.

Pernicious (2015)

Directed by: James Cullen Bressack
Cast: Ciara Hanna (Alex), Emily O’Brien (Julia), Jackie Moore (Rachel), Russell Geoffrey Banks (Colin), Byron Gibson (Byron), Jack Prinya (Male Nurse), Sohanne Bengana (Vlad), Jared Cohn (Shane), Sara Malakul Lane (Samorn)

I’m always running a formula in my mind when I watch any movie or a horror movie in particular. Well, I’ve got some attractive ladies in a foreign land, this has got to be a kidnapping or a sex trafficking film. My sensibilities are my own worst enemy sometimes, because with James Cullen Bressack’s film “Pernicious”, it really is like that leftover Whitman’s sampler from Valentine’s Day. You never know what you are going to get.
It begins with three young women from the States arriving in Thailand for a humanitarian teaching gig.

Pernicious (adjective), definition:
causing insidious harm or ruin; ruinous; injurious; hurtful: pernicious teachings; a pernicious lie. deadly; fatal: a pernicious disease. Obsolete. evil; wicked.
Never has there been a film that so clearly lived up to its dictionary definition as James Cullen Bressack’s Pernicious. The film sees three beautiful girls arrive in Thailand to teach English and have a summer filled with adventure but none were prepared for what awaited them. Their nightmare begins when they trio pick up three strangers in a bar; three strangers who disappear with (seemingly) the girls jewelery and a golden statue that was left to rot in the attic, leaving behind only gore-filled dreams that haunt the girls sleep.
