Max has released the official trailer for its new original biographical series, Chespirito: Not Really on Purpose. Inspired by the life and legacy of Roberto Gómez Bolaños, the eight-episode series will debut its first episode on June 5 on Max, with weekly episodic premieres.

Uruguayan production company U Films has boarded Ignacio Lasierra Pinto‘s debut feature, “Perseidas.” The film made waves after a successful pitch at last November’s Ventana Sur when it unveiled an all-star cast led by Spanish Academy Goya-winning actor Macarena García.

Today, at the Málaga Film Festival, a co-production agreement was signed between U Films and the previously established Spanish producers of “Perceidas,” Lago&Laporta and Imval Producciones. The group described their partnership as “an organic international co-production that strengthens the ties between both countries and allows us to continue advancing this very special project.”

U Films was founded by Virginia Hinze and Lucía Gaviglio in 2012. The company’s mission is to develop projects with a special emphasis on international co-productions and independent distribution.

The Brothers Grimm tale of Snow White is back in the zeitgeist again with the upcoming Disney live-action remake, but there have been many non-Disney adaptations of the story in Hollywood history that have flown under the radar. One such example is Pablo Berger's 2012 film Blancanieves. This film takes the premise of Snow White and sets it in Spain within a much darker and realer setting. Starring Macarena García as Carmen (Snow White), Maribel Verdú as her evil stepmother Encarna, and Daniel Giménez Cacho as Carmen's father Antonio, Blancanieves is one of the strangest, most surreal fairy tale adaptations out there and definitely worth a watch.

The Spanish film academy gave a surprise snub to its best-known director when Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door was not nominated for best film for the Goya Film Awards, Spain’s equivalent to the Oscars.

The Room Next Door picked up 13 Goya nominations, including best director for Almodóvar and best acting nominations for both of the film’s leads, Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore, but the film was left out of the best picture category. Perhaps the language barrier — it’s Almodóvar’s first English-language feature — counted against it among Spanish academy voters.

Instead, the Goya’s best picture race will include five Spanish-language features: Casa en flames from director Dani de la Orden, Marcel Barrena’s El 47, La estrella azul from Javier Macipe, Arantxa Echevarría’s La infiltrada, and Segundo premio from director Isaki Lacuesta and Pol Rodríguez, which was Spain’s official Oscar submission this year.

Local hits The 47 and Undercover lead the nominations for Spain’s 2025 Goya Awards, with 14 and 13 nods respectively.

Rock drama Saturn Return and Pedro Almodóvar’s Golden Lion winnerThe Room Next Door are also high up on the list of nominees.

The Goya winners will be announced at a ceremony in Granada on February 8.

Marcel Barrena’s The 47, produced by The Mediapro Studio, tells the story of a working-class community in the hills of Barcelona and its struggle to get public transport and better living conditions. It has grossed €3m at the Spanish box office to date.

El rodaje de Un hijo, la nueva película de Nacho La Casa, ha comenzado en el País Vasco y Sevilla.

Un hijo sigue a María, una psicóloga escolar sin experiencia, que intuye que, tras la aparente felicidad de un niño de 8 años recién llegado al colegio, se esconde un drama de terribles consecuencias. Para averiguarlo, deberá descifrar lo que la mente de Guille traduce en dibujos y, además, vencer la agresiva resistencia de su padre.

La película, cuyo guion ha escrito Nacho La Casa junto a Juan R. La 72ª edición del Festival de Cine de San Sebastián contará con una notable presencia de cineastas, actores, guionistas y productoras de renombre que se darán cita en la ciudad.

La Sección Oficial será el epicentro de muchas de estas figuras, quienes presentarán sus últimas producciones y participarán en diversas actividades del festival. La inauguración del festival estará marcada por la película Emmanuelle, que llegará acompañada de la directora Audrey Diwan y los actores Noémie Merlant, Will Sharpe, Jamie Campbell Bower y Chacha Huang. Por otro lado, para clausurar el festival, el director John Crowley y el actor Andrew Garfield presentarán We Live In Time (Vivir el momento), una de las películas más anticipadas de esta edición.

True crime documentary series American Murder: Laci Peterson remains the No. 1 show on Netflix going into the Aug. 23 weekend. The gripping docuseries arrived one week ahead of Peacock's own docuseries on the same case. For something a little lighter, Emily in Paris also remains in the top 10 following the release of the highly anticipated season 4 part 1.

Even more shows are burning up the top 10 ranking, including AMC titles like Dark Winds, A Discovery of Witches, and Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches and the latest part of That '90s Show.

German series The Zweiflers (Die Zweiflers) took home the prize for Best Series at the Canneseries Awards last night.

This year, Canneseries took place from 5 to 10 April, in parallel with the final MIPTV event. The Zweiflers – which also won Best Music and the High School Award for Best Series – is a six-part series about a Jewish family in contemporary Germany pondering the inheritance of the family delicatessen. Creator and showrunner David Hadda paid tribute to his Jewish grandparents at the premiere of the show, which will premiere in Germany on Ard’s Mediathek streaming service in the spring.

Norwegian series Dumbsday (Dummedag) won for Best Screenplay. The series is set against the backdrop of a virus that causes people’s intelligence to drop to unsurvivable levels worldwide.

German comedy drama The Zweiflers was named best series at the seventh annual Canneseries festival that ran April 5-10 in Cannes.

The six-part series produced by Turbokultur from creator and showrunner David Hadda about a colourful Jewish family in contemporary Germany also won the prize for best music and the High School Award for Best Series voted upon by local students.

Led by an ensemble cast, the series centres on the inheritance of a family delicatessen as the past and future clash among several generations of Zweiflers.

Hadda told Screen of the win, “It was really always my dream to bring the series to Cannes.

Created and showrun by David Hadda, the show picked up multiple awards at the French TV fest on Wednesday, including best series and music. Selected as a Variety Hot Pick earlier this month, “it’s destined to be billed as a Jewish ‘Succession’ set in contemporary Germany, with all the baggage that can bring to the table, Variety wrote.

That being said, its creator had another dysfunctional family on his mind.

“My biggest influence was ‘The Sopranos’ and I always said I wanted to do a Jewish ‘Sopranos’! The idea was to change the narrative from the victims’ perspective in Germany to a Jewish patriarch and Holocaust survivor who had lost everything – and everyone, and then came back to rebuild his life. That was empowering for me,” said Hadda.

The Killing star Sofie Gråbøl has reflected on how her Danish breakout series redefined “national and linguistic borders” when it came to TV viewing.

Gråbøl spoke with Deadline in the midst of her time leading the Canneseries jury, for which she is judging shows from the likes of China, Brazil and Sweden.

The Killing, which was a smash hit both locally in Denmark and around the world, airing for three seasons between 2007 and 2012 and spawning a U.S. remake, “was a defining moment and a visceral way of showing how TV series can be accessible for all of us,” she said.

“It was something we couldn’t imagine [at the time],” added Gråbøl. “That something so local from this small country could have such interest across the border. We had been so used to importing culture from other countries but suddenly those national and linguistic borders weren’t defined anymore.”

“The Killing” star Sofie Gråbøl will serve as the president of this year’s Canneseries competition jury, it was announced on Tuesday.

The Danish actor kickstarted her career with the 1986 film “Barndommens gade” (“The Streets of My Childhood”) and is known for her TV roles including “The Killing,” “Nikolaj og Julie” and “Taxa.”

Joining Gråbøl on the jury are “Madame Hollywood” director, screenwriter and producer Olivier Abbou; “Four Daughters” composer Amine Bouhafa; “City of God” actor Alice Braga; “Blancanieves” actor Macarena García; and “Samber” actor Alix Poisson.

Together, the jury will judge the eight series in competition and unveil the winners on April 10. The series competing in the festival’s main lineup include “Dark Horse” (Denmark), “Dumbsday” (Norway), “Living on a Razor’s Edge” (Brazil), “Moresnet” (Belgium), “Operation Sabre” (Serbia), “This Is Not Sweden” (Spain and Sweden), “To the Wonder” (China) and “The Zweiflers” (Germany).

The San Sebastián Film Festival has revealed the lineup of Spanish titles that will screen as part of the Official Selection of its latest edition, which is due to unfold from September 22 — 30. Scroll down for the full list.

Barcelona-based Filmax has acquired the world sales rights to “The Art of Return” – a Spanish production by first-time director Pedro Collantes nurtured through Venice’s renowned Biennale College film workshop initiative.

The boutique distributor will also handle the Spanish distribution for this coming-of-age drama, which focuses on a young actress (“Holy Camp’s” Macarena García) returning home to Madrid after six years in New York.

The action takes place over a 24-hour period in the protagonist’s home city, where she has a series of encounters that cause her to reassess her life.

★★★★☆ The Brothers Grimm's pitch black fairytale Snow White is transformed by the Flamenco rhythms of 1920s Spain in director Pablo Berger's sumptuous and beguiling Blancanieves (2012), out now on Collector's Edition DVD. An unabashed homage to the silent cinema of twenties Europe, Berger's film is a delightfully mischievous reinvention of this age-old fairytale. Last year saw two larger-than-life adaptations of the Snow White story - Tarsem Singh's Mirror Mirror and Rupert Sanders' angsty Snow White and the Huntsman - yet Berger's direction is far more outlandish and indirect than both aforementioned renditions.

Audiences are entitled to be suspicious of critics who start raving about another new silent film in black-and-white, so soon after the Oscar-winning success of Michel Hazanavicius's The Artist. Fad? Cinephile affectation? Maybe, but during the fuss over The Artist, the haute cinephile thing to say was that it was all nonsense compared to Aki Kaurismäki's 1999 silent film Juha. All I can say is that there's a flash of pure inspiration, unfakeable and unmistakable, in this extraordinarily enjoyable film, a silent-movie melodrama version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves set in southern Spain in 1910. It feels saturated with pleasure: it is extremely pleasurable to watch, and shows every sign of having been extremely pleasurable to make.

Not only is this great film Blancanieves, written and directed by Pablo Berger (Torremolinos), international sales agent 6 Sales' Marina Fuentes♀, opening theatrically in the U.S. on March 29 thanks to Cohen Media, it is the film we the jury at the 2013 Palm Springs International Film Festival awarded the Cine Latino Award And it has swept the Goyas (the Academy Award equivalent) in Spain. This film which I previously blogged about, is the film which took so long to make that The Artist, took its place in our own Academy Awards last year. Had this one only come first ... this is the real winner. It is a fairytale and much more; it depicts Spain and Seville in the time of fascism and leaves a tear upon the place.

Blancanieves, a re-working of the Brothers Grimm classic fairy tale "Snow White," is a breathtakingly beautiful film and a uniquely spirited homage to the black-and-white Golden Age of Europe's silent cinema. Set in a romanticized 1920s Seville, Berger's Snow White is Carmen (Macarena García), the daughter of a famous bull fighter, who lives under the tyrannical rule of her monstrous, evil stepmother, Encarna (Maribel Verdú). As the city's most eagerly awaited cultural event, the 14th Mumbai Film Festival, presented by Reliance Entertainment and American Express and organized by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (Mami) draws closer, it has been revealed that this edition of the festival will conclude with the screening of Blancanieves as its Closing Film. Blancanieves, a 2012 black-and-white silent Spanish drama film directed by Spanish auteur Pablo Berger is the official Spanish entry for the Best Foreign Language film at the 85th Academy Awards in 2013. Having premiered at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival, the film won the Special Jury Prize and an ex-aequo Best Actress 'Silver Shell' Award for Macarena García at the 2012 San Sebastian International Film Festival. Mumbai Film Festival is the third film festival where the film is set to be showcased. Join us for our 18th annual showcase of the wildest, sexiest new films from Spain - on the big screen at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. I know I've seen something atonishing, and I know I'm not ready to review it. "Cloud Atlas," by the Wachowski siblings and Tom Tykwer, is a film of limitless imagination, breathtaking visuals and fearless scope. I have no idea what it's about. It interweaves six principal stories spanning centuries--three for sure, maybe four. It uses the same actors in most of those stories. Assigning multiple roles to actors is described as an inspiration by the filmmakers to help us follow threads through the different stories. But the makeup is so painstaking and effective that much of the time we may not realize we're seeing the same actors. Nor did I sense the threads. The actors Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Hugh Grant and Jim Sturgess together portray 14 different characters, and not even sex is a clue because some of their roles cross gender categories.
