If you actively kept up with the DC TV era, then you were living. Being a fan of the comic book genre at a time when superheroes were making their presence felt all across television was truly an unforgettable experience, and you could pretty much find a DC or Marvel show on each night of the week on broadcast TV. Considering that there are none on broadcast now, that really highlights what a once-in-a-lifetime kind of experience the 2010s were.
Although the majority of DC TV programming came from The CW's Arrowverse, there was one DC show on another network. That was Batman prequel Gotham, which aired on Fox and ran for five seasons. Starring David Mazouz as a young Bruce Wayne and Ben McKenzie as Detective James Gordon, the show had a mostly successful run, entertaining Bat-fans with its outlandish and off-the-wall plot developments each and every week.

There are few superheroes as powerful as Batman. Yes, we're aware that he doesn't have any super powers, but the Caped Crusader has endured some of the toughest challenges in his near-century on the pages of DC Comics, the silver screen in our movie theaters, the small one in our homes, and the interactive adventures in our video games. He has also gone toe-to-toe with some of the most powerful beings in the galaxy, surviving every close encounter, withstanding all the attacks thrown his way and returning them in spades.
"Because he's Batman" isn't just a catchphrase; it's a way of life that the Dark Knight lives by, allowing him to overcome the most overwhelming of challenges and live to fight (crime) another day. And the heroes who join him in the Justice League - supernatural, mythical warriors like Superman and Wonder Woman - are constantly in awe of his resilience,...

There are plenty of Batman cartoons out there, from the superlative "Batman: The Animated Series" to the underrated 2004 series "The Batman" to the new and fresh "Batman: Caped Crusader." But there's another cartoon even the most ardent Bat-fans may not have heard of — because it was never actually made.
"Gotham High" would've shown Bruce Wayne's teenage years as he attends high school alongside Batman's future villains, who all already resemble their costumed selves. Pitched in 2009 or so, the series never made it past the concept stage. Warner Bros. had previously floated a teen Batman cartoon in the late '90s to cash in on "Buffy The Vampire Slayer." That resulted in "Batman Beyond," a cyber-noir imagining a future where an aged Bruce Wayne trains teenager Terry McGinnis to be a new Dark Knight.

Vertical has acquired U.S. rights to fantasy thriller The Lost Daughter, a gothic mystery directed by Emmy winner Austin Andrews and Andrew Holmes, marking the writer-director duo’s second feature film. The film is slated for release in early 2025 in select theaters.
Based on Peter Pan author J.M. Barrie’s dark fantasy Mary Rose, the film stars Paloma Kwiatkowski (Riot Girls), David Mazouz (Gotham) and Camille Sullivan (Hunter Hunter), with Golden Globe nominee Adam Beach (The Power of the Dog) and Donal Logue (Zodiac).
Kwiatkowski plays Lily, a young woman drawn by a haunting melody to a remote tidal island. When she returns to the mainland at the next low tide, 25 years have mysteriously passed.
As Lily reunites with her estranged son Jared (Mazouz), who harbors his own ties to the island, she uncovers terrifying secrets and discovers that escaping the island’s grasp could come at a devastating cost.

Eight major DC characters nearly appeared in Gotham, but circumstances kept them from making their debut. As a prequel to the Batman mythos, Gotham was well-known for its creative reimagining of iconic villains and allies, offering an opportunity to witness the evolution of characters like Penguin, Riddler, and Catwoman. Over five seasons, the show balanced its own unique twists with homage to the source material, delivering a dark yet compelling narrative about the descent of Gotham City into chaos.
However, the final season of Gotham was truncated, reduced from its intended length to just 12 episodes. This shorter run, coupled with various creative decisions, meant that several characters and Gotham storylines were ultimately scrapped. While the show's conclusion and its full embrace of the Batman legend was certainly thrilling, it’s hard not to ponder the characters who almost made it to the screen, many of whom are known for their appearances throughout the Dcu timeline.

Half a decade since Gotham came to its end, actors Morena Baccarin and Ben McKenzie discussed the show in an interview. Though they met on the set of McKenzie's previous project, The O.C., the stars only became an item when they starred opposite one another. The DC series starred McKenzie as a young Jim Gordon, along with David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne, Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth, Cory Michael Smith as Edward Nygma, and Robin Lord Taylor as the Penguin.
Initially introduced as a guest star in Gotham's first season, Baccarin played Dr. Leslie "Lee" Thompkins, who is Batman's doctor in the comics, and became a series regular in the subsequent seasons. Baccarin and McKenzie married and started their family during the show's run, remaining a couple in the decade since. Baccarin has continued acting, having recently appeared in Deadpool & Wolverine, while McKenzie has acted and become an economic commentator.

This story contains Major Spoilers for Joker: Folie Deux, now showing in theaters
Leave it to Batman to come to the defense of one of his biggest adversaries in an ironic twist. One former Bruce Wayne actor insists the widely panned Joker: Folie Deux is "overhated", but, like most, isn't a fan of the film's controversial ending.
Via his TikTok account, Gotham star David Mazouz shared his thoughts on Folie Deux after seeing the movie. Though Mazouz sympathized with the fans who expressed their hatred for the Joker sequel, he gave director Todd Phillips credit for taking a bold approach to the story. "If you think about this movie as a character study of somebody who has completely blended art with reality to the point of insanity, I think it's interesting." However, Mazouz admitted he didn't like the ending, saying "No spoilers, but the ending...Gotham's done that before. It just has!

David Mazouz may not be one of the names that instantly comes to mind when asked to name a Batman actor, but he did don the cape and cowl very briefly in the final season of the hit series Gotham, and he recently shared his thoughts on the movie on his TikTok account.

Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix will never hear the end of fans whining about how underwhelming Joker: Folie à Deux was. Having achieved so much with the initial release in 2019, Phillips probably thought he could get away with adding an unusual and unexpected twist to the sequel. But things simply haven’t worked out in his favor this time.

It has been just over two weeks since the movie’s release, and the fact that the Joker’s story was transformed into a musical has backfired big time! But what’s worse is other small-budget films are doing far better than Joker: Folie à Deux.

When it comes to highly anticipated sequels, Joker: Folie à Deux certainly drew the spotlight. As a follow-up to Todd Phillips’ groundbreaking Joker (2019), which earned critical acclaim and became a cultural phenomenon, this film was bound to carry high expectations. Yet, its reception has been anything but predictable, and the wave of divisive opinions has sparked heated discussions.

In Todd Phillips' 2019 "Joker," Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) is a nobody, in the sense that he is made to feel that his dreams and hopes amount to nothing, like that of a non-entity. There are some worthwhile layers to this character study, as Arthur is shaped by cyclical abuse and trauma, which he initially attempts to stifle by attempting to make people laugh. However, one bad joke after another escalates into a killing spree, and before he can even process what has happened, he evolves into a symbol of anarchy in Gotham, inadvertently infecting others with his madness. He starts as the Joker, but his life-altering act of infamy morphs the individual into an idea, shared freely among those obsessed with what they think he stands for, creating many who aspire to be Jokers.

A magical location in The Island Between Tides
In the first part of my interview with Andrew Holmes and Austin Andrews on their latest film, The Island Between Tides, we discussed their fascination with time and their work with stars Paloma Kwiatkowski, Donal Logue and David Mazouz. In part two, we discuss their locations, aspects of storytelling, their feelings about screening at Fantaspoa and the way they captured the magic of the time-shifting island at the centre of their ghostly tale.
“The island was truly a magical place,” says Andrew. “We shot the film in Prince Rupert, British Colombia, which is the north-westmost point in Canada. Basically, it's just south of Ketchikan, Alaska, and it is a magical place. And that was probably the most difficult decision that I had to make going into this film was where to film this location. Paloma Kwiatkowski as Lily in The Island Between Tides
Somewhere between an adaptation of and a sequel to Jm Barrie’s play Mary Rose, The Island Between Tides is the story of a family whose lives are turned upside down by encounters with a magical island where time runs at a different pace. Lily (played as an adult by Paloma Kwiatkowski) is lost there briefly as a child and experiences a change of perspective as a result. Her return visit as an adult sees her flung forward 25 years into the future. Donal Logue plays the father and Camille Sullivan the sister who have to cope with her disappearances, while Logue’s Gotham co-star David Mazouz takes on the role of Jared, the son who grows up without her, also altered by the island’s influence and struggling with mental illness and substance abuse as a result.

Batman is one of DC Comics' oldest superheroes, depicted in various ways from TV to movies, with 52 actors portraying him since 1943. Each Batman actor faced unique challenges and interpretations, from Lewis Wilson's budget constraints to George Clooney's goofy plot. Christian Bale is widely regarded as the best Batman for capturing the darkest aspects of the character in the iconic Dark Knight trilogy.
Batman is one of DC Comics' most beloved superheroes. Along with Wonder Woman and Superman, he's one of the three founding members of the Justice League. He's also one of the earliest superheroes in comic history, first appearing in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939. Bruce Wayne, with his caped and masked alias Batman, is seen in many TV, film, and game adaptations. Since 1943, 52 actors have embodied the superhero, including voice-acting, cameos, and smaller roles.

The 2010s saw a major shift in live-action DC superheroes on TV, with the Arrowverse and other shows gaining prominence alongside the Dceu movies. Gotham, a Batman prequel series, explored the morally gray world of the titular city and ended after a successful five-season run. The Flash had a nine-season run but ultimately struggled with overpacked narratives and declining special effects compared to Gotham.
The 2010s marked a significant decade for DC's live-action superheroes on television, and as Gotham and The Flash reach the decade milestone since their premiere, it’s worth revisiting their legacies. While the preceding decade offered a plethora of DC Animated Universe classics, only the Superman prequel series, Smallville, dominated the live-action representation of DC comics on TV. The 2010s marked a watershed moment with the DC Extended Universe movies releasing in cinemas and the Stephen Amell-led Arrow kickstarting its own DC universe for CW-distributed titles like Black Lightning,...

Gotham Season 2 had tonal issues, with silly villains and jarring violence. Gotham Season 3 struggled to juggle multiple storylines but had strong performances. Gotham Season 5 provided a colorful conclusion with iconic costumes and stunning visuals.
As far as superhero television goes, Gotham was a surprisingly consistent show. Chronicling the history of pre-Batman Gotham city through the lense of a police procedural, the series slowly introduced some of Batman's most iconic villains, as well as some original creations, via a young James Gordon. Running for five seasons on Fox, Gotham ran the gamut of tone and format, going from a "monster-of-the-week" style series presenting Detective Gordon with varied cases to a heavily serialized drama spanning the absolute breadth of the Batman mythos.
Following Gotham's finale at the end of the fifth season, it's interesting to see how the five runs the series had on network television compare to one another. Early seasons...

Gotham's brutal deaths included Commissioner Sarah Essen being toyed with and fatally shot by the Joker's precursor, Jerome. The leader of the Court of Owls was decapitated by Nathaniel Barnes after she revealed herself as a fraud. Alice Tetch, the sister of the Mad Hatter, died a brutal death by impalement after trying to escape from her brother's clutches.
DC's Gotham series featured quite a few deaths over the course of its five seasons, and some of them were more brutal than the rest. Gotham was the spiritual sister series to Smallville, with both of them telling the stories of how DC's two biggest heroes came to become who they were destined to be. DC Universe fan art imagines new actors as members of the Teen Titans in James Gunn's franchise. David Mazouz, Halle Bailey, Jenna Ortega, Elijah Richardson, Wyatt Oleff, and Caleb McLaughlin are suggested for the roles of Robin, Starfire, Raven, Cyborg, Beast Boy, and Static, respectively. The concept of Teen Titans appearing in the DC Universe is closer to being possible due to the established continuity and active heroes in the franchise.
New DC Universe fan art brings several young actors into James Gunn's franchise as members of the Teen Titans. While 2023 is marking the end of the Dceu, it was also the conclusion for one of Max's long-running DC TV shows, as the Titans series finale wrapped up the gritty live-action adaptation of the popular DC team. With Gunn's DC Universe coming up, it is opening the door for new interpretations of various DC heroes and villains, including the Teen Titans.

Adam West's Batman has faced the most villains in live-action adaptations due to the sheer quantity of episodes produced for the '60s Batman TV series, which ran for three seasons and included 120 episodes. The Batman TV series also created several original villains, such as Egghead, King Tut, and Clock King, which contributed to Adam West's high villain count. Many of these original villains have since become part of the Batman comics and other media. While every live-action Batman has made a significant impact on the Batman mythos, Adam West's Batman stands out for his superhero career, battling the most villains over the course of his iconic portrayal.

Jeremy Irons is back as Alfred Pennyworth in DC's The Flash. In the film, Batman's best ally reluctantly becomes Barry's guy-in-the-chair, using snarky comments to remind the younger hero that he's Batman's helper, not the Flash's. Irons' performance is as iconic as ever, and he matches the film's hilarious tone while still carrying Alfred's seriousness. However, he isn't the only actor to excel at this role.
Since he first appeared in the 1943 serial, many actors have portrayed Alfred Pennyworth, but some of them stand out from the rest. Whether it is because they add something new to Alfred's character that changes him forever or because they do a great job at sticking to his comics' identity, these actors are the best at playing Batman's closest confidant.

William Austin was the first actor to ever portray Alfred Pennyworth in a live-action adaptation in 1943, with Lewis Wilson as Batman.

Over 80 years of stories have made Batman one of the most enduring characters in pop culture history. In that time, the Dark Knight has also been the subject of more big-screen adaptations than any other superhero to date, starring in 11 live-action movies and counting. The Batman is the latest take on the character, with 2023’s The Flash set to bring back two other Caped Crusaders for a time-shattering adventure through the multiverse that will then lead into HBO Max’s Batgirl, where the Dark Knight will play a supporting role.
As much as we love seeing Batman in theaters, not all of these movies have been entirely successful. The same goes for the actors who’ve starred in these films. Every Batman fan has a favorite big-screen Dark Knight, one performer who they feel perfectly encapsulates all of the qualities that make the World’s Greatest Detective such a great character.

The hashtag #SaveGotham is trending on Twitter as fans band together in an attempt to revive the Batman prequel series. Originally premiering on Fox in 2014, the show concluded its run after five seasons in 2019. There's been no indication that the world of Gotham will ever be expanded with some kind of continuation or spinoff series, but that isn't stopping thousands of fans from trying to make it happen.
"This show was the highlight of my week for the years it was on," tweeted one fan. "It wasn't always perfect, but it provided a much-needed escape from reality that I would like to have again."

As one of the most enduringly popular characters in any medium, Batman is inevitably one of the most heavily adapted, and the Caped Crusader finds himself comfortably ranking alongside Dracula and Sherlock Holmes as an almost ubiquitous presence on our screens.
When The Batman debuts in March 2022, Robert Pattinson will be the seventh actor to play a live-action Bruce Wayne in the space of a decade following Christian Bale and Ben Affleck in the movies, along with Kevin Conroy, Iain Glen, David Mazouz and Warren Christie in the various TV shows.

Netflix has always had a pretty good selection of horror flicks for fans of the genre to delve into, ranging from old-school classics to modern thrill-rides. Bruce Wayne had his origin story told as part of Fox’s Batman prequel series Gotham for 5 seasons with David Mazouz playing the Caped Crusader's young version from the moment his parents were murdered. But what many may not know is that there were actually plans at doing a different kind of origin series back in 1999. Tim McCanlies had pitched a series that would have been called Bruce Wayne. This series, while similarly to Gotham, would have made Bruce’s origin story an even bigger central focus compared to the Fox drama. It actually was in the veins of Smallville, the 10-year long series focused on Tom Welling’s Clark Kent before becoming Superman. Given that Warner Bros’ film division nixed the idea of any Batman live-action television series, Bruce Wayne never saw the light of day.

The amount of heroes taking part in “Crisis on Infinite Earths” is truly staggering. But the really mind-blowing part is that we still don’t know all of the surprise cameos that The CW has managed to pull off. Here’s one more that we can maybe add to the never-ending list, though.
Don’t get your hopes up too high just yet, but apparently, it’s possible that Gotham star David Mazouz will be returning as Bruce Wayne in the crossover event. We Got This Covered has had it confirmed by two separate sources that an appearance from Mazouz’s Bruce was in early drafts of the script, as with the cameos from the Titans and Doom Patrol casts that we’ve previously heard about. However, our sources are unable to confirm whether it actually ended up happening, as possible contractual obligations and scheduling conflicts could’ve gotten in the way.

Considering how Gotham concluded its five-season run this past spring, I’m not sure if I’m ready to think about any sort of primetime rival just yet. On the other hand, I’m totally down for DC continuing it as a comic book series just as they once did with Smallville, but that’s a discussion we’ve already had at length.
Regardless, nothing can stop diehard fans from wanting more or dreaming of what the future might bring. In fact, when the cast reunited for a panel conducted at DragonCon in Atlanta, they were asked about the possibility of a revival down the line.
Here’s what Harvey Bullock himself, Donal Logue, had to say when confronted with that question:
“I think if the other people were involved, we’d absolutely be down to do it together. It would just get funky if it was [without them]. We were really...

Gotham recently wrapped up its fifth and final season with a time jump and the reveal of Batman, albeit briefly. Although the series itself varied in quality, it was never afraid to gamble on more adventurous storylines and challenge its strong leading cast with multiple roles. However, it seems unlikely that we’ll be seeing more of the Gotham cast in future incarnations of the Dark Knight, at least according to recent interviews at Dragon Con in Atlanta.
A number of the stars discussed their time on Gotham and future plans while at the convention, including David Mazouz (Bruce Wayne), Sean Pertwee (Alfred Pennyworth), Robin Lord Taylor (Oswald Cobblepot), Maggie Geha (Ivy Pepper) and Donal Logue (Harvey Bullock). Logue was particularly keen to point out the need to keep their universes separate from other takes on Batman, commenting as so on being approached by Warner Bros. or DC to appear...

Ewan McGregor, Shiloh Fernandez, and Val Kilmer have reportedly joined the cast of the mob drama The Birthday Cake.
The film is the directorial debut from Jim Giannopoulos, who also wrote the original story and co-wrote the script with Fernandez and Diomedes Raul Bermudez. Lorraine Bracco, Ashley Benson (Pretty Little Liars) and David Mazouz (Gotham) are also featured in the cast. THR reports the following description for the film:
The indie will see Fernandez play Giovanni, who reluctantly continues the family tradition of bringing a cake to the home of his uncle Angelo (Kilmer) on the 10th anniversary of his father's death. But Giovanni’s life changes that night after witnessing a murder and learning the truth about what happened to his father.
The film is set to start shooting this fall in New York City. Are you interested in The Birthday Cake?...

McM Comic Con returned to Manchester at the end of last month, with a packed weekend of nerdy goodness taking place between 27th – 28th July at Manchester Central. And when I say packed I mean packed!
Guests included (but weren’t limited to) Michael Rooker and Sean Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy (amongst many other things), David Mazouz from Gotham, Samantha Ireland, Jen Brown and Shannon McCormick from Rwby, and McM mainstays Nolan North and Tory Baker, two video game voice performers whose names are synonymous with classics of the genre including Uncharted and The Last of Us.
Besides the guests, McM Comic Con Manchester features the comic village (itself packed with attending artists and writers – including the Awesome folks at Reckless Hero and our friends Subversive Comics), a Ton of vendors from which you could buy a myriad of geeky goodies (though my wallet was grateful I didn...
