The Walking Dead star thinks this brutal death lost the show a lot of fans
Image
AMC’s seminal hit horror The Walking Dead ran for an incredible 11 seasons and has spawned six spinoffs. However, it’s no secret that the flagship show had a fairly dramatic drop in viewership in its later seasons, and one of the former stars thinks he knows why.

Ross Marquand, who played kind Alexandrian Aaron starting in the fifth season of The Walking Dead, talked about the pivotal moment during the Ross Marquand Spotlight Panel at AwesomeCon recently. During his Q&a, Marquand discussed the single episode that he believes did the most damage.

Talking about season 7’s opening episode, “The Day Will Come When You Won't Be”, Marquand discussed the iconic and gory scene where beloved character Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) is violently and graphically murdered by bad guy Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan):

I will say that was the episode that we lost a lot of fans, I think,...

The Real Reason Jeffrey DeMunn's Dale Died In The Walking Dead Season 2
Image
It's tough being a wise old man character on "The Walking Dead." If you're not getting beheaded with a sword by the Governor, then you're probably getting your stomach ripped open by a stray walker. That's what happened to poor Dale (Jeffrey DeMunn), the guy who served as the primary survivor group's voice of reason for nearly two full seasons before his untimely demise on "The Walking Dead." Did Dale's moral code occasionally bring him into goody-two-shoes territory? Eh, probably. But it's better to have too many scruples than none at all, and the group was worse off in his absence.

In the "Walking Dead" TV show's season 2 episode "Judge, Jury, Executioner," Dale is patrolling around the farm alone at night when he sees a partially-devoured cow. He goes to investigate only to be ambushed by a surprise walker. Dale is strong enough to restrain the walker from biting him,...

The Walking Dead Creator Robert Kirkman Regrets Killing Off One Character Too Soon
Image
If you were an actor in the 2010s looking for job security, "The Walking Dead" was not the show for you. The series was famous for killing major characters in a way that makes rewatching the early seasons extra depressing. You'll be enjoying a season 1 scene with Andrea (Laurie Holden), Dale (Jeffrey DeMunn), Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies), and Shane (Jon Bernthal), only to remember that not a single one of them made it past season 3. Some characters did manage to stick around for surprisingly long, like Carol (Melissa McBride) or Daryl (Norman Reedus), but most people on the show only stuck around for two or three seasons tops.

Case in point: Tyreese (Chad Coleman) was introduced midway through season 3 before being killed off halfway through season 5. Admittedly, though, casual fans didn't have much hope for Tyreese in particular, given the early seasons' suspicious tendency of killing off established Black characters...

Why The Walking Dead Killed Off Chandler Riggs' Carl Grimes
Image
"The Walking Dead" was a pretty bleak show, one that constantly killed off characters in brutal, gruesome ways. It was a show filled with monologues about how humanity is doomed to suffer. But there was one constant source of hope throughout the series that a lot of fans took for granted: trusty young Carl (Chandler Riggs), who represented a new generation of survivors who would grow up and take charge.

Whereas Rick's generation grew up in comfort only to be tossed suddenly into hell, Carl's generation was growing up in hell and would live to see society rebuild itself. While most of the other young characters on the show went mad and/or died tragically, Carl managed to keep his wits about for nearly eight whole seasons. As bad as things got, even as the group stumbled across cannibals and dictators, Carl's development into a tough, courageous young man offered...

“Soooo stupid, they did him dirty”: The Most Pointless Death in The Walking Dead Ruins Rick Grimes’ Main Motive in the Show
Image
The Walking Dead fans endured several tragic deaths throughout its long run and continued to experience the extended franchise set in the post-apocalyptic world. Some of these deaths left a lasting impact on viewers, including that of Carl Grimes, the son of the show’s protagonist, whose journey came to an end in Season 8.

And fans of the show have long expressed their disappointment with the pointless death of the character who was the driving force behind the protagonist’s motives and his vision for a peaceful and better future.

Carl in The Walking Dead | Credit: AMC The Walking Dead’s death continues to disappoint fans

The Walking Dead has never shied away from killing off main characters, a practice that continued throughout the show. However, sometimes it resulted in what fans consider pointless deaths, including that of Carl Grimes in Season 8.

Resident Evil Reboot Eyes The Walking Dead Actor to Star
Image
Resident Evil is getting rebooted by Barbarian helmer Zach Cregger. With no connection to the previous movies (and Netflix series), the new reboot is set to hit theaters next year.

Per THR, the first cast member for the movie may have been found. Austin Abrams is reportedly eyed to star in the movie, which would reunite him with Cregger. Abrams is one of the stars of the upcoming film Weapons, Cregger's follow-up to the acclaimed horror movie Barbarian. Abrams has yet to officially sign on, so it's not a lock just yet.

Abrams recently appeared in the Apple TV movie Wolfs with George Clooney and Brad Pitt. To fans of The Walking Dead, he can be recognized for his role as Ron Anderson, the character who shoots Carl (Chandler Riggs) in the eye in Season 6 before he gets devoured by zombies. Abrams is also known for his role as Ethan Daley...

The Real Reason Jon Bernthal's Shane Walsh Died In The Walking Dead Season 2
Image
Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) may be the main character of "The Walking Dead" overall, but you can certainly make the case that Shane Walsh (Jon Bernthal) was the most important character of season 2. He was Rick's conflicted frenemy, a guy who cared for Rick but did sort of sleep with his wife on multiple occasions. He also served as the devil on Rick's shoulder, constantly arguing against Dale (Jeffrey DeMunn), the angel on Rick's shoulder. He wasn't evil exactly, but he sure didn't see the value in playing by society's old rules in this new violent world they'd all found themselves in.

But although Shane was the standout character of season 2, the show still killed him off in the season's penultimate episode, "Better Angels." After growing tension between them, Shane tries to kill Rick, only for Rick to turn the tables and stab him to death instead. Shane does return...

Breakup Season (2025) Movie Review: A gentle, moving holiday movie that takes a look at why certain relationships just don’t work
H. Nelson Tracey
As hard as it is to digest, nice people also end up having relationship breakdowns. Very few films out there feature two nice people trying to make things work but are unable to. Although H Nelson Tracey’s debut feature film, “Breakup Season,” is not about making things work, it is a story about allowing people to be honest about their feelings and accepting that your lifelong dream of having a life together will not come to fruition.

At the onset, “Breakup Season” feels like a sweet holiday romance. Ben (Chandler Riggs) and Cassie (Samantha Isler) live in L.A. and after a cute montage that shows us the initial stage of their relationship, we meet them for the first time when they arrive in rural Oregon – Ben’s hometown where the two of them are supposed to spend the holidays with his family. Ben is extremely excited for this next stage of their relationship,...

How 'The Walking Dead' Zombie Virus Began, Explained
Image
When Robert Kirkman, the creator of The Walking Dead franchise, first developed the idea of a zombie apocalypse, he gave very little thought to the question of how and why the zombie virus was created. While writing The Walking Dead comic book series, which debuted in 2003 and ended in 2019 after 193 issues, Kirkman deliberately avoided revealing the zombie virus origin in favor of focusing on character development and the various moral dilemmas resulting from the zombie apocalypse.

This character-based philosophy carried over to the flagship The Walking Dead television series, which, following the show’s debut in 2010 till its final episode in 2022, largely avoided dealing directly with the science behind the zombie apocalypse, especially the virus origin. However, after avoiding the subject for over a decade, the origin mystery was finally resolved in the final episode of The Walking Dead spin-off limited series The Walking Dead: World Beyond, in which it...

Carl Grimes' Death On The Walking Dead, Explained
Image
Everyone has their "Walking Dead" breaking point. It's the death that pushes you over the edge, curdling your love for the seemingly endless AMC zombie franchise into something more bitter and jaded. For me, it was the loss of Beth (Emily Kinney) in season 4, a pointless surprise death that was the exact opposite of the empowered narrative the show's cast and crew had been hinting towards in press junkets ahead of time. Many fans, I think, peaced out when Steven Yeun's beloved underdog Glenn Rhee was gratuitously beaten to a pulp in front of his loved ones (a narrative choice that still inspires people to yell at Negan actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan in the street).

Different "Walking Dead" deaths hit fans in different ways, but the season 8 death of Carl (Chandler Riggs) packed a massive emotional punch for several reasons. For one thing, the son of series antihero Rick Grimes...

10 Character Deaths In The Walking Dead Universe That Almost Killed the Franchise
Image
Every fan of The Walking Dead must come to terms with the brutal truth that people will die. If the title doesn't make this clear, then the events of the Season 1 finale certainly do. After six episodes of traveling with the same companions, most of the group disbands by the finale, with some dying in a fiery inferno. The Walking Dead is not a feel-good series. Throughout 11 seasons and quite a few spin-offs, each series has had its fair share of trauma, and there are some deaths that no one will ever forget.

Glenn Rhee, the uncontested best character of the series, dies in the milestone 100th issue of The Walking Dead comic. This moment hits hard because of its brutality and because he was the last person who deserved it. There was no universe where the AMC series could avoid this monumental moment, as painful as it is. But...

10 Walking Dead Characters Who Appear In The Most Episodes (Including Spinoffs)
Image
The Walking Dead's TV universe has been going on for over 14 years and has introduced a plethora of interesting characters, but some have appeared far more frequently than others. With the introduction of spinoff shows alongside certain survivors having a hiatus from the action, some unexpected stars wound up stealing the spotlight. While a few major characters have suffered disappointing Walking Dead deaths that happened much earlier than anticipated, others have emerged as series regulars and even played a role in the various spinoffs, helping them accumulate plenty of appearances while becoming crucial to the franchise.

Still, the survivors with the most plot importance are understandably the ones that have featured most often, but not all of them made it to the end of the series. The most frequently recurring cast members tended to be leading names, most of who could be considered protagonists. However, some faces who seemed...

28 Years Later Finally Gets Revenge On The Walking Dead After The Zombie Series Copied 28 Days Later
Image
The Walking Dead and 28 Days Later are two of the biggest zombie franchises out there, but the film series has finally gotten its revenge over a decade after Robert Kirkman's IP mimicked its opening. Although 28 Days Later's creator claims it isn't a zombie movie, the film's Infected has all the classic traits of zombies, making it one of the most influential projects in the subgenre. Its creativity and horror elements helped inspire plenty of other zombie media, including The Walking Dead, as the show's opening episode seems extremely reminiscent of Danny Boyle's cinematic masterpiece.

With the comic series starting in 2003 and the televised adaptation arriving in 2010, The Walking Dead has become one of the most recognizable zombie franchises around and remains relevant today. During its peak, it was one of the biggest shows on TV, and it has since spawned a variety of spinoffs and...

Why Lauren Cohan’s Maggie Left ‘The Walking Dead’
Image
Lauren Cohan skyrocketed to stardom when she joined the juggernaut zombie sensation The Walking Dead in 2011, becoming a fan-favorite with her compelling portrayal of the fierce and resilient Maggie Greene in the groundbreaking original series. The courageous character became a staple in the thrilling show and her relationship with fellow survivor Glenn Rhee captured the hearts of viewers and made them become emotionally invested in their epic battle for survival.

Audiences were left shocked when Cohan announced her departure from the smash hit in 2018, with the actress setting out to star in the action dramedy Whiskey Cavalier after contract negotiations fell through with The Walking Dead producers. She would return to the pop culture phenomenon in time for its 11th and final season, and went on to star opposite Jeffrey Dean Morgan in the spin-off series The Walking Dead: Dead City. What Happened to Judith Grimes in ‘The Walking Dead’?
Image
Although The Walking Dead's main series ended in November 2022, the zombie franchise fittingly refuses to die. After the main show's conclusion, at least three spin-offs have been released, including Dead City, Daryl Dixon, and The Ones Who Live. A fourth spin-off, More Tales from the Walking Dead Universe, is also being developed by showrunner Scott M. Gimple.

Given all the spin-offs and countless characters who've come and gone in the Twd universe, it's easy to lose track of young Judith Grimes and her ultimate fate. Adding to the confusion, Judith's fate in the comics differs greatly from the TV series. Fortunately, answers are provided in Twd: The Ones Who Live's finale, giving fans crucial information about Judith Grimes' whereabouts and offering closure regarding her future.

10 TV Dramas with only 1 good season
Image
Often considered the most difficult form of storytelling in entertainment, the television landscape has produced some riveting shows that have become mainstays in pop culture and have garnered loyal fans in a variety of genres. However, for as many great series that highlight the best of the medium, specifically TV dramas, multiple shows fail to live up to a higher standard that had been previously established for viewers, where some TV dramas eventually lose direction.

Whether dealing with changes in the plot, mishandled narrative execution or issues outside of the show’s control, several TV dramas have delivered a strong television experience for audiences that emphasized great potential, only to then significantly drop in quality. Moreover, many of these shows’ prolonged tenure drew the ire of dedicated fans who felt disappointed by a lack of cohesion, as well as grew tiresome with the ill-conceived narratives at hand.

Does Magna Die in The Walking Dead? Her Character Arc, Explained
Image
The Walking Dead may have ended two years ago, but the franchise endures thanks to the comics, streaming, and the numerous spin-offs that continue to air and tell the stories of some of the most popular surviving characters. Indeed, while many characters survived right through to the end and continue to be central to The Walking Dead universe, some characters met their ends before the post-apocalyptic series concluded. Many of them died way sooner than others.

One character who was introduced late in the series is Magna (Nadia Hilker). But even some of the most dedicated The Walking Dead fans don’t recall whether she made it all the way to the end or not.

10 TV Character Deaths That Almost Ruined the Show
Image
Television often lives and dies by the strength of its characters. Unlike feature films, long-form storytelling allows viewers to get to know characters for better or for worse. Series such as Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead have gone on so long that it can feel detrimental and heartbreaking when the worst happens.

These shows also tend to dispatch characters without concern. With such a long timeline, writers have to make the world feel real, and for that to happen, there has to be high stakes. This is a well-known fact, but sometimes, shows don't exactly stick the landing. There are many series that, while trying to make the events feel gritty and real, end up alienating the audience. Some television deaths are so controversial that they end up hurting the series in the long run.

Chandler Riggs thinks Arcane is a better show than The Walking Dead
Image
Chandler Riggs rose to prominence thanks to playing Carl Grimes in The Walking Dead. He played the character for 78 episodes across eight seasons between 2010 and 2018. And in that time, he received the Saturn Award for 'Best Performance by a Younger Actor in a Television Series.'

Riggs' departure from the show was far from perfect; many fans turned away from the series following the decision to kill off Carl. In The Walking Dead comics, Carl is key to the ending, and the show completely disregarded the source material in that respect.

Since playing Carl Grimes in The Walking Dead, Riggs hasn't been on our screens all that much. One notable project of his is The Spider, a fan film based on Spider-Man where he plays the iconic Peter Parker. Plus, he's tried his hand at voice acting, playing Superman in Justice League x Rwby: Super Heroes & Huntsmen. He also has...

Andrea Wouldn't Have Been Such A Hated Twd Character If The Show Stuck To The Comics
Image
Angela was remains of the most hated The Walking Dead characters to appear in the long-running AMC zombie drama - and as a fan of the Robert Kirkman comics it’s based on, I know that she shouldn’t have been. Played by Laurie Holden between seasons 1 and 3 of The Walking Dead (along with some flashback cameos in seasons 10 and 11), Andrea was one of the first survivors Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) encountered in season 1. Initially traveling with her ill-fated sister Amy (Emma Bell), Andrea’s story arc quickly became one of the most tragic in the show’s earlier seasons.

Laurie Holden remained part of The Walking Dead cast until the season 3 finale, when Andrea was killed off. There were many Twd fans who were happy to see her go for a variety of different reasons. However, it didn’t have to be this way. While I am generally a...

Why Did They Kill Carl in The Walking Dead?
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

This article discusses sensitive topics such as suicide.

Through its 11-season run, The Walking Dead never shied away from killing off main characters. It started with characters like Shane (Jon Bernthal) and Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) and hit its peak with people like Hershel (Scott Wilson) and Glenn (Steven Yuen). But one death in particular came as a complete shock: that of Ricks (Andrew Lincoln) son, Carl (Chandler Riggs). With an incredible arc through the seasons, developing from a whiny child to a brave and courageous young man, it seemed like there was so much more of Carls story to tell.

However, his life was cut short when Carl perished from a bite on his torso after trying to heroically save others. He had an opportunity to say his goodbyes in one of the most heart-wrenching moments on the show. The situation...

10 Lead Actors Who Quit A TV Show, But Returned For The Series Finale
Image
Among the most fundamental parts of a TV show are the characters in it. For a story to work, its lead actors must successfully embody their roles and conquer the interests and hearts of the audience. However, some TV series go on for years and their leads might not be able to keep up with a show's schedule. Whether for personal or professional motives, when a lead TV actor leaves their role, it is always a painful moment for the fans who, after accompanying them through their journey, have usually grown to love the character.

Their absence creates a void. However, sometimes, the same actors can surprise the audience and honor the character's arc by making one last return for the series finale. These heartfelt moments not only provide the audience with one last opportunity to shed tears (or laugh) with their favorites but also bring a sense of closure...

Breakup Season is the feature directorial debut of friend-of-the-site & filmmaker H. Nelson Tracey after many short films. This premiered at numerous film festivals earlier in 2024 and it's getting an actual theatrical release. A young man brings his new girlfriend to his rural Oregon hometown for Christmas to introduce her to his family, only for things to go terribly wrong upon arrival – they decide to break up. But she can't leave, so they're stuck together for the holidays. "Funny, dramatic, and bittersweet in equal measure. Breakup Season is an authentic look at early 20s love & heartbreak. Subverting traditional holiday conventions with a more grounded and relatable approach than typical [cheesy] holiday fare, the film explores the topics of family and breakups with sincerity." How Did Abraham Die in The Walking Dead?
Image
Abraham Ford (Michael Cudlitz) quickly became a fan-favorite character when he joined the cast of The Walking Dead in season four. After running into Glenn Rhee (Steven Yuen) and Tara Reid (Alanna Masterson), who were searching desperately for Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohan), he makes a fast impression. Alongside his comrades Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt) and Rosita Espinosa (Christian Serratos), the trio quickly proves that they can be solid allies. Once the group meets the others, including Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), Abraham becomes a worthy member of the team.

Sadly, however, he meets his end in one of the most gruesome, polarizing episodes of the show. He is the first of two to meet the end of Negan Smiths (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) trusty bat Lucille. It was a horrifying moment and one that is ingrained in fans minds. But it was overshadowed by the even more heart-wrenching death of Glenn that followed.

Why Dale Left Twd: The Controversial Reason Jeffrey DeMunn Wanted His Character Killed
Image
The Walking Dead is no stranger to killing off fan favorites, main characters, and just about anything that breathes. The hit post-apocalyptic series based on Robert Kirkman's graphic novel series of the same name follows a group of survivors as they try to navigate a new and dangerous world that has become overrun with flesh-eating zombies.

Jeffrey DeMunn starred in the first two seasons of the AMC series as Dale Horvath, an aging survivor who is part of Rick Grimes' original group in Atlanta. Although Dale was a fan-favorite character, he was shockingly killed off in Season 2. While not the last major character to suddenly be dispatched before his time, Dale's death was especially surprising to fans of the original graphic novels, which saw his character survive much longer. Some fans might be surprised to learn that the real reason for DeMunn's departure stems from behind-the-scenes issues, not a...

10 Predictable TV Show Deaths We All Saw Coming
Image
Warning: This list contains spoilers for many character deaths from popular TV shows.

TV shows have character types inherently at risk of dying, like parents and mentors, to drive plot complications. The challenge for showrunners is to make impactful character deaths, even if the audience can predict them. Some TV shows, like Game of Thrones, face the dilemma of needing to keep key characters alive for long-term arcs.

There are some deaths in TV shows that no one saw coming, and others everyone saw coming from a mile away. Certain TV character types are always in danger of being killed off because of the ways their deaths inherently drive plot complications: parents, mentors, etc. In other cases, the story might set up a character's death or even necessitate one, leading to a process of elimination where the audience determines which character the story doesn't need for future seasons.

Dead City Season 2 Must Retcon The Walking Dead's Timeline To Close A Big Plot Hole
Image
Dead City taking place so long after other The Walking Dead shows is creating timeline problems. For example, Maggie and Negan don't mention in Dead City that Rick returned home at the end of The Ones Who Live. The only solution is for The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2 to retcon its timeline.

The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2 has the perfect opportunity for a much-needed retcon that would iron out the biggest timeline wrinkle currently making the franchise look scruffy. If Rick Grimes grabbed a zombie, cut it open, removed its innards, spread the various guts and organs on the ground at random, then sprinkled spaghetti over the top, the resulting mess would still be easier to comprehend than The Walking Dead's timeline. Even before expanding into a multi-show franchise, The Walking Dead chronology became tricky thanks to actor Chandler Riggs growing up noticeably faster than Carl Grimes.

10 TV Episodes That Completely Betrayed A Main Character
Image
Sheldon Cooper comes across as cruel when he tricks Leonard into wearing an itchy sweater. Rachel Berry leaves behind her life-long Broadway dreams for a TV show that fails. Ted Mosby's romantic nature is undermined by the reveal of who his story is really about.

Several popular TV shows betrayed a main character when that character is depicted doing something that goes against everything the audience knows about them. The character does something that conflicts with one of their core values, that undermines their arc up until that point, or completely changes their personality. Consistent characterizations are key to successful shows, difficult though it may be to maintain them over many seasons or in the face of actors wishing to leave the show.

This phenomenon goes hand in hand with TV finales that ruined their shows, as the reason that the episode is considered to have undone the rest of...

What Happens to Negan in The Walking Dead?
Image
On The Walking Dead, Negan goes from a ruthless villain to a character seeking redemption. Negan was responsible for some of the most brutal deaths in The Walking Dead. His story continues in the spin-off series, The Walking Dead: Dead City.

Negan Smith (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) has gone down in history as not only the best villain on The Walking Dead, but arguably even one of the best TV horror drama villains, period. He was a sinister leader who rallied groups of survivors to work under him, calling his merry band of thugs Saviors. Everyone went by the name Negan and every member of the crew followed him blindly and did his bidding. That involved intimidating other communities into trading supplies for protection. He was an apocalyptic version of the combination of a mafia boss and cult leader.

He was also the perfect character fans loved to hate. Beneath the surface,...

Andrew Lincoln Agrees Controversial Walking Dead Moment Went Too Far
Image
One of the most controversial moments of The Walking Dead came with the introduction of Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Negan. While the villainous character would go on to become a fan favorite and one of the stars of a new spinoff series, the way he made his entrance drove away many viewers of the show.

As fans of The Walking Dead will remember, Negan brutally killed two fan favorites upon his arrival: Abraham Ford (Michael Cudlitz) and Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun). The latter's death was especially painful for fans, given how Glenn had been such an important part of the series since the very first season. His sad death scene was also particularly graphic, showing Glenn with his head split open and one eyeball popping out. This led to a lot of criticism from fans, and Rick Grimes actor Andrew Lincoln now says (per Empire) that the series went too far with the scene.
