Indian studio Applause Entertainment’s upcoming big-budget series “Gandhi” aims to humanize the Mahatma.
The first season covers the formative years of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s life as a law student in London and later as lawyer and civil rights activist in South Africa, during which time he conceived the ideas that ultimately led India to independence from British rule. Gandhi became known as Mahatma, or great soul, for his leading part in the independence movement.
The series sees the reunion of Applause, director Hansal Mehta and actor Pratik Gandhi (no relation to the Mahatma) who plays Gandhi, after hit SonyLIV series “Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story” (2020).
The benchmark for on-screen depictions of Gandhi remains Richard Attenborough’s “Gandhi” (1982), which won eight Oscars.

Hulu’s “Under the Bridge,” which premiered on the streamer last month, could be another drop in the true-crime dead-girl television canon of which there are many varying outings, until it swerves into another direction when telling the horrific true story of Reena Virk. Based on Rebecca Godfrey’s book of the same name, in 1997 the 14-year-old Virk was murdered by a group of teenagers in British Columbia, Canada, after previously being bullied at school.
The television show, helmed by Quinn Shephard and Samir Mehta, delves into Godfrey’s book about Virk’s murder with Riley Keough playing Godfrey and Lily Gladstone as Cam, a fictional character who is a police officer and Godfrey’s estranged friend from high school, who both investigate the Virk case.
In wanting to create a fleshed out show, and to pay respects to Virk, Shephard and Mehta used Godfrey’s book as a jumping off point.

On Monday, the Supreme Court rejected former Trump adviser Peter Navarro‘s bid to stay out of prison while he appeals his conviction for evading a congressional subpoena.
Navarro, 74, was charged with two counts of contempt of Congress after he refused to cooperate with the House January 6 committee investigating the Capitol Riot. Navarro failed to provide documents to the committee and refused to testify. Navarro cited former President Donald Trump‘s executive privilege to maintain confidentiality. However, there is no evidence that Trump ever asserted the privilege or that it would apply in this case.
This is Navarro’s second attempt to stay out of prison. In March, Chief Justice John Roberts denied Navarro’s first request. Navarro was ordered to report to a federal prison in Miami on March 19. Navarro renewed his request to Justice Neil Gorsuch. The motion was brought to a full court for a vote. Previously,...

A year and a half ago, Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough were still relative unknowns about to hit the big time when they were cast together in the eight-episode Hulu true-crime thriller “Under the Bridge.” Gladstone would steal the show in the Martin Scorsese epic “Killers of the Flower Moon,” earning an Oscar nomination and a SAG Award win. Keough, famously the eldest grandchild of Elvis Presley and Priscilla Presley, landed Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for her starring role in the Prime Video limited series “Daisy Jones and the Six.” In a Zoom interview this week for the “Under the Bridge” premiere on Hulu with its writer-creator Quinn Shephard and showrunner Samir Mehta, Mehta described landing Gladstone and Keough in the follow-up project to their big breakthrough as “literally kismet.”

The star-studded casting of Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough in Hulu’s Under the Bridge, as it turns out, all started in the DMs.
The series, which counts Keough as an executive producer, is based on the true story of Reena Virk, a 14-year-old girl who was beaten and murdered by a group of teenagers in Canada in 1997. Keough stars as Rebecca Godfrey, who investigated and wrote a book on the tragedy, with Gladstone as a local police officer trying to solve the case.
At the show’s Los Angeles premiere on Monday, Gladstone recalled forming a bond with Keough in 2017 as they ran in the same Hollywood circles, when she was promoting Certain Women and the Daisy Jones & The Six star was releasing American Honey.
“I was aware of her work, anyway, but I feel like being in each other’s orbit then, I became very curious about who this talent was.

Lily Gladstone, creator and EP Quinn Shephard and showrunner/executive producer Samir Mehta joined Deadline’s Contenders TV to discuss their Hulu series Under the Bridge. Based on Rebecca Godfrey’s account of the murder of Reena Virk, all three said they were careful not to sensationalize Virk’s death.
“A lot of times, the human element, particularly the people who suffered the most are the ones who get erased,” Gladstone said. “The thing that happened to them becomes a sensationalized thing for the media and then it becomes something for consumption.”
Gladstone added that her movie Killers of the Flower Moon, for which she was Oscar nominated, faced the same issue. She felt Martin Scorsese’s film was aware of this dynamic, indicting itself for making a work of art about a real-life tragedy, too.

Poacher is about killing elephants for their tusk. Richie Mehta , known to not spare us any details from the scene of the crime (Delhi Crime) highlights scenes of poachers ripping out the priceless ivory from elephants wailing in unbearable pain.
I don’t know how Mehta shot these never-before scenes of cruelty to animals. We are assured that no animal was harmed during the shooting. We as the spectators are irreparably harmed.
It is not a pleasant sight to see how cruel we humans can be. Poached is an expose on a loveless irredeemably lost civilization which no longer cares about the damage we cause to our own earth every single day.
But we are straying. The focus here is on the plunder of elephants. It is not an easy breezy series to sit through.

Hansal Mehta’s Netflix series “Scoop” on Sunday won the prizes for best Asian TV series and best lead actress for Karishma Tanna at the Busan International Film Festival’s 2023 Asia Content Awards and Global Ott Awards.
The hard hitting crime drama series is based on journalist Jigna Vora’s 2019 memoir “Behind Bars in Byculla: My Days in Prison.” Tanna plays the lead role of Jagruti Pathak, a scoop-hunting journalist who is caught in the nexus of the police, the underworld and the media.
Mehta (“Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story”) cast Tanna in the role because in her audition she had “the X factor” and that she “lights up a room.” “It’s an author backed role, it’s a dream come true role,” Tanna told Variety in Busan.
“The entire show is on this character Jagruti Pathak and the director has seen so much potential in you and you feel a responsibility,...

Update: Google’s market dominance has been due to the company’s continuous innovation in its search engine, not by exclusionary conduct that stifle competitors like Microsoft’s Bing, the company’s lead attorney said in his opening statement in the landmark antitrust trial on Tuesday.
John E. Schmidtlein, lead attorney for Google, said that Microsoft failed to win over consumers with Bing because it did “invest, innovate and prioritize the development of search.” He said that Microsoft, having been beaten in the market, chose instead to focus on its Windows operating software.
The Justice Department and state plaintiffs claim that Google’s deals to become the default browser on search engines and phones have given it an unfair advantage over rivals.
But Schmidtlein said that browers like Mozilla and Apple conducted competitions on which search engine would be the default and that Google won “on the merit.” Apple’s Safari,...

During the challenging year of 2020, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, Hansal Mehta’s Scam 1992 emerged as a major success. Owing to its unskippable intro music and Prateek Gandhi’s outstanding performance, the show gained immense popularity. Now, after three years, Hansal Mehta is set to release another installment in the series, focusing on India’s infamous scam from 2003, The Telgi Story. While various films, series, and documentaries like Paper starring Rohit Roy or 2009’s Mudrank: The Stamp have already explored this scam, a unique take is expected from this new series to offer a fresh perspective. Unlike the previous series, Scam 1992, Mehta’s involvement is limited to him being the showrunner, as the direction is handled by Tushar Hiranandini.
The series revolves around Abdul Karim Telgi, a lower-middle-class hawker with big dreams. Despite having a degree, he struggled financially and wanted more than just survival. He desired wealth and influence.

After “Mulk” (2018), “Article 15” (2019), “Thappad” (2020) and “Anek” (2022), filmmaker Anubhav Sinha is back with “Bheed,” another hard-hitting film that shines a light on the fabric of Indian society.
The film is set during the 2020 Indian pandemic lockdown and tells the poignant story of migrant workers stranded without basic necessities while trying to go home to their villages. Shot in black and white, it is deliberately evocative of the 1947 partition of the Indian subcontinent into India and Pakistan when people were uprooted from their homes in the largest migration in history.
“When the pandemic hit, people were seeking help on Twitter. Everybody had different strengths so we were helping each other and, and I really got sucked into it. And that was the time when I felt that this film had to be made, this period of time has to be recorded, and I didn’t want it to be just a Coronavirus film,...

Array Releasing, the distribution arm of Ava DuVernay’s Peabody Award-winning narrative change collective, has picked up rights to the feature drama Learn to Swim for the U.S., the UK, Australia and New Zealand, slating it for release on select screens and on Netflix on August 15.
The first feature from director Thyrone Tommy dives into the world of contemporary jazz with a musical meditation on love and loss, following the doggedly private and talented saxophone player Dezi (Thomas Antony Olajide) and a vivacious, but less experienced singer named Selma (Emma Ferreira). When the two meet, sparks fly, but their respective emotional baggage and temperaments make the road to romance bumpy at best.
An official selection of the 2021 Toronto Film Festival, Learn to Swim was written by Tommy and Marni Van Dyk, with Alona Metzer producing.

ABC News is doubling down on documentaries and docuseries, launching a new non-fiction division called ABC News Studios.
The studio already has 15 series in various stages of production, as well as 3 feature-length documentaries, which will live under the ABC News Films banner.

Kelley says the studio wants to play in the long-form documentary film space; the limited series space; the formatted anthology space; and will produce one-off specials. “From a genre perspective,...
