"But He's Come Up With A Few Masterpieces": John Lithgow Picks The Christopher Nolan Movie That He Considers A Masterpiece
Image
Christopher Nolan is one of the most respected directors of the 21st century. While he technically made his debut with Following in 1998, Nolan's breakout work is largely considered to be Memento, which was released in 2000. This movie earned Nolan his first Oscar nomination, for Best Original Screenplay, based on the script he co-wrote with his brother Jonathan Nolan. Memento is perhaps one of Nolan's most classic examples of playing with time as a storytelling device, a motif that would become a signature tool throughout his work.

Memento was well-received, and Nolan's filmography has developed growing clout over the years. The director's first movie to be nominated for Best Picture ended up being Inception. From there, multiple other Nolan films would be nominated for Oscars, including Dunkirk and Oppenheimer. The latter film would go on to become Nolan's first movie to win Best Picture, and also earned the auteur an award for Best Director.

Christopher Nolan's 'Interstellar' Breaks Box Office Record With IMAX Re-Release
Image
Christopher Nolan's Interstellar is among the best science fiction films ever made, and is often regarded as the director's best movie to date. It should come as no surprise that, over 10 years after it was first released, Interstellar continues to break box office records. The movie was already a major commercial success when it was first released in 2014, grossing $681 million worldwide. Countless theatrical re-releases have bumped that total up to $759 million worldwide, but its latest re-release just broke a major international box office record.

Interstellar was recently re-released in India, where it broke the record for the biggest opening weekend ever for a Hollywood re-release in India. The new IMAX re-release grossed ₹11.6 crore (roughly $1.3 million) during its recent theatrical run in India. Interstellar is being shown in Indian IMAX theaters for just seven days, with only three days left – meaning its total gross from the re-release is still up in the air.

Christopher Nolan's 'Interstellar' Dominates Max Streaming Service
Image
The reason why Christopher Nolan fans subject themselves to constant tear-filled re-watches of Interstellar is a bigger mystery than the movie's actual plot, but the fan base is back at it again as the film is dominating the Max streaming charts. While Nolan loves blending genres, especially sci-fi, with action and thriller plot points, Interstellar is his most overt science-fiction movie. Starring Matthew McConaughey, the film follows Cooper, who embarks on a mission to find a new suitable planet for the human race, after Earth has been stripped of almost all natural resources, and crops no longer grow. The film is grand in scale, emotionally devastating, and a long-time fan favorite, with some considering it to be Nolan's best.

Interstellar is currently streaming on Max, and sits at #7 on the streamer's Top 10 chart. Released in 2014, Interstellar also stars Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, Timothée Chalamet, Matt Damon, Michael Caine, and Casey Affleck.

The Deeper Meaning Behind Murph's Name in 'Interstellar,' Explained
Image
Interstellar is one of the greatest films ever made, with Christopher Nolan's creativity bursting through in every instance, as well as the visual storytelling that transcends beyond the norm. If it hadn't been for the films The Dark Knight and Inception, Interstellar would have easily been his best work, but in terms of rewatchability, it certainly outperforms any of his other movies.

Aside from being an exceptional science fiction film that messes with people's minds, Interstellar is also a visual spectacle, with most of the scenes set in space, other planets, and Gargantua (a black hole). While that is certainly an impressive aspect of Nolan's masterpiece, its true grandeur lies in its incorporation of physics, including a well-known law from a prominent scientist.

At this point, you would have guessed what it was, since the law was mentioned once in the film, but why is this sci-fi feature so...

Why So Many Christopher Nolan Fans Think 'Interstellar' Is His Best Movie

Quick Links Does 'Interstellar' Hold Up in 2025? What Are New Viewers Saying About 'Interstellar'?

Prior even to the sci-fi epic's re-release on Netflix, Christopher Nolan's Interstellar remained as talked-about as ever. Its Reddit page was and is constantly flooded with new posts from fans gripped by their first-time viewing experience or plagued with unanswered questions. Then, on January 5, 2025, it matched 100% of its Google search volume scale, demonstrating that it's still at peak popularity.

Nolan is known for his large-scale blockbusters with complex, non-linear plots. His past works outside of Interstellar include 2008's The Dark Knight, Inception, and 1/2 of the recent 'Barbienheimer' phenomenon, Oppenheimer. In addition to the grandness of the stories themselves, Nolan's films also typically run long. Oppenheimer, for instance, is a 3-hour film. But what is it about Interstellar, specifically, that lends itself to a staying power, to an ability to capture the...

One Of Christopher Nolan's Best Movies Is Finally Coming To Netflix Next Month
Image
Christopher Nolan has been a hitmaker throughout his career. While there are exceptions, his movies tend to be favorable both critically and at the box office. The most recent example of this dual success would be Oppenheimer, Nolan's epic biopic that was released to rave reviews. Oppenheimer went on to win seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Director for Nolan, for whom it was his first directing Oscar. Showcasing Nolan's ability to succeed at the box office, Oppenheimer grossed $975.5 billion over its lifetime.

While Oppenheimer has oft been cited as Nolan's magnum opus, many of his other works are revered as well. Memento, Nolan's sophomore feature, is an experiment in storytelling and structure that earned Nolan an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Memento is tied with The Dark Knight as Nolan's highest-rated movie, sitting at a 94%. That said, many of Nolan's works have received fantastic reviews,...

This 2-Minute Scene From Interstellar Proves The Biggest Christopher Nolan Criticism Wrong
Image
The launch scene in Interstellar proves one of the most common criticisms of Christopher Nolan wrong. While Nolan has directed several acclaimed movies such as Oppenheimer, Inception, and of course, Interstellar, his films are often criticized for not having enough human and emotional moments. However, the scene in which Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) leaves his family and launches into space on a mission to save all of humankind proves that out of all of Christopher Nolan's movies, Interstellar is one of his most emotional.

Interstellar was released in 2014. Alongside McConaughey, the cast of Interstellar also includes Jessica Chastain, Casey Affleck, Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon, and Michael Caine. While Chastain and Affleck portray Cooper's children as adults in the film, the launch scene takes place when Murphy and Tom are still children, and played by Mackenzie Foy and Timothe Chalamet. 10 Sci-Fi Movies That Got Time Travel "Right"
Image
Time travel movies have captivated audiences since the early days of science-fiction, with filmmakers crafting increasingly elaborate ways to send their characters through time. Many rely on pure fantasy, with films such as Terminator giving us naked time-traveling Arnold, but some directors have embraced the challenge of grounding their adventures in real scientific possibilities. From Einstein's theory of relativity to quantum mechanics, these films draw from actual physics to create their frameworks for time travel.

When filmmakers collaborate with scientists, study physics, or commit to logical consistency to create their time travel rules, they create stories that feel more engaging, precisely because they could theoretically be possible. Rather than using time travel as a convenient plot device, these narratives embrace scientific principles as creative constraints. They prove that working within real-world frameworks can enhance rather than limit storytelling potential.

The rise in fantasy and sci-fi movies and TV shows has led to an increase in bad movies due to more productions in general.

Fantasy fans look back and cringe at the thought of the worst fantasy movies of the previous decade. In many ways, fantasy and sci-fi movies have been on the rise in the past 20 years with the inception of certain genre-defining franchises. A similar trend in TV shows has also played a role in the genre's expansion. However, more fantasy movies being produced, mathematically speaking, does mean that more bad fantasy movies are being produced.

Some of the worst fantasy movies in the last 10 years demonstrate overconfidence in the basic concept on...

“All parents talk about it”: Christopher Nolan Shuts Down Critics for Calling His Movies ‘Cold’ With Emotional Response to Interstellar Casting
Image
Criticism is nothing new to Christopher Nolan. The acclaimed director has endured criticism from some critics who have labeled his films as “cold” or lacking in emotional depth. However, the 53-year-old London-born director, who has received Oscar nominations for Best Original Screenplay for both Inception & Memento (co-written with his brother), earned some scorn for his 2014 epic sci-fi flick Interstellar.

In response to criticism that his work is too cerebral and emotionally detached, Nolan seemed to make a bold move with the casting choices he made for Interstellar. In what way?

The narrative of the movie originated from a “very personal place”. He and his brother, Jonathan Nolan, wrote the screenplay together. The former explained why the original Interstellar script by his brother called for Murph to be a boy, but the Dunkirk director chose to make her a girl instead.

What Year Is Interstellar Set In? The Christopher Nolan Movie's Timeline Explained
Image
Interstellar takes place in a future where humanity is facing extinction due to a new Dust Bowl and the depletion of natural resources. Matthew McConaughey's character, Cooper, leaves Earth to search for a new home for humanity. The movie's timeline spans nearly a century, but Cooper himself barely ages due to time dilation from his various cosmic adventures. This makes it difficult to determine which year the movie takes place in. Interstellar begins in 2067 and jumps ahead 23 years while only a few hours pass for Cooper. The movie ends around the year 2156, with Cooper being 124 years old and reuniting with an elderly Murph.

Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic Interstellar starts off in a year in the distant future, but its story timeline goes decades even further into the future. Interstellar takes place during a new Dust Bowl when humanity is running out of natural resources and struggling to grow new food.

From ‘Black Beauty’ To ‘Wild Beauty’: Director Ashley Avis’ Equine Activism Comes Full Circle In Her Oscar-Contending Documentary
Image
As Mick Jagger repeatedly declares in a famous 1971 Rolling Stones song, “Wild horses couldn’t drag me away.” And for filmmaker Ashley Avis, she could not be dragged away from chronicling the plight of wild horses in her award-winning documentary Wild Beauty: Mustang Spirit of the West.

It’s an issue for which awareness is rapidly growing — because of her documentary, the newly created nonprofit Wild Beauty Foundation, and a nationwide effort to get Congress to pass legislation to save wild horses and burros.

The film graphically illustrates how the beautiful animals are callously rounded up by contractors hired by the Bureau of Land Management to cull them from grazing on federal lands in a host of Western states including Colorado, Nevada, Utah, Arizona and Wyoming.

Avis and her team, including producing partner and husband Edward Winters, her brother Richard Avis, their small camera team and sometimes even her parents...

Stop Pretending Twilight: Breaking Dawn Isn’t Weirdly Great
Image
“Childhood is not birth to a certain age,” Bella Swan intones in the opening moments of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1. “The child is grown, and puts away childish things. Childhood is the kingdom where nobody dies.” Although she’s quoting 20th century American poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, Bella’s observation may very well apply to childish thoughts about the Twilight franchise too. For over a decade after the release of the final movie in the franchise, we can now admit the truth: the Twilight franchise isn’t about sparkly abstinence vampires, it isn’t about stilted dialogue or pasty, inarticulate heartthrobs.

It’s about the love between a wolf man and an infant.

To be clear, I say this not as a critique but as a praise. For all the hate that the series got throughout the period of its highest popularity, Twilight was never just...

'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn' Differences Between the Book and Movie
Image
The epic conclusion of the Twilight Saga, titled Breaking Dawn, was split into two movies, as is the case with a lot of big franchises, despite being one large book. Breaking Dawn gives us the long-awaited marriage of Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson), Bella’s pregnancy and subsequent birth of her and Edward’s daughter Renesmee (Mackenzie Foy), and the subsequent tensions that arise between the Cullen’s and the Volturi because of it. And of course, Bella finally gets her wish of becoming a vampire after four installments of begging Edward to change her. But despite the benefit of having two movies to cover the book’s many events, there are still some very notable changes that were made from page to screen. Some are for the better, and some are for the worse, but they all culminate to create one incredible ending to the beloved Saga.

The Twilight Saga: The Complete Collection Will Sparkle Its Way Onto Blu-Ray To Mark 15th Anniversary
Image
Ah, The Twilight Saga. What a moment in time. From the release of the first installment in 2008 to the conclusion in 2012, it was an era in which online randos believed the epitome of comedy was responding to the announcement of a new piece of vampire media with, "So long as the vampires don't sparkle, I'm in!" All the while, the movie adaptations of Stephenie Meyer's uber-popular supernatural teen romance novels continued to rake in enough money to fill several dump trucks with each passing year, no matter how much their detractors roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws.

As Twilighters await the arrival of the already-doomed-to-fail TV revival of the franchise, what better way to pass the time than by revisiting the original "Twilight" movie and its sequels on home media? Timed to coincide with the 15th...
