“The Crown” is gearing up for its last hurrah at the SAG Awards, an organization that has bestowed a number of prizes onto the Netflix regal show over the years. It claimed the highly coveted TV drama ensemble prize twice (2019 and ’20), while individual winners through the years were Claire Foy (2016 and ’17), John Lithgow (2016) and Gillian Anderson (2020). Now the sixth and final season is hoping to prevail for a third time, which would tie it with “Downton Abbey” in this category at three total wins.
Season 6 faces off in the TV drama ensemble race against fellow nominees “The Gilded Age,” “The Last of Us,” “The Morning Show” and “Succession.” Elizabeth Debicki is “The Crown’s” only solo acting nominee this year, with her co-nominees in the TV drama actress category being Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) and Sarah Snook (“Succession”).

This year’s SAG Awards nominations for drama ensemble run the gamut in terms of total cast members nominated. You have “The Gilded Age” on one side with a jaw-dropping 34 people represented. And then you have “The Last of Us” on the other side with just two — hi, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey! HBO’s zombie apocalypse series has now tied the Screen Actors Guild record with “Key and Peele,” which was the first TV show to nab an ensemble citation with just two stars: Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.
The “Key and Peele” funny duo lost to “Orange Is the New Black” for comedy ensemble in 2016, which had a whopping 34 cast members nominated that year. Hmm, a two-person cast losing to a 34-person ensemble? Might SAG Awards history repeat itself? “The Last of Us” competes this year against “The Gilded Age” (34 cast members), “Succession” (18), “The Crown” (15) and “The Morning Show...

[This story contains spoilers from the season two finale of The Gilded Age.]
In HBO’s period drama The Gilded Age, the character of Peggy Scott (Denée Benton) offers a solitary glimpse into the life of the Black upper class in New York City in the 1880s. Yet in season two, that contextual lens is expanded when the secretary and aspiring journalist, just one generation removed from slavery, ventures to the South and witnesses both the progressive educational strides made by and for African Americans at the dawn of the establishment of historically Black colleges and universities, as well as the social prejudices that threaten their existence.
“Peggy gets to explore so many different textures of the Black world this season, from going to Tuskegee, to meeting Sarah Garnet and seeing the community organizing that was happening during that time, and getting to see a Black social gathering for the fireworks at the Brooklyn Bridge, which was one of the first in the series,...

When it comes to TV, how comforting is too comforting? At what point do the vibes outweigh the plot? These are the brave questions perhaps not asked but definitely raised by Julian Fellowes’ “The Gilded Age,” which finished its second season on Sunday, December 17. In a review of the full season, IndieWire’s Ben Travers compared the show to “a light drizzle,” saying that “The absence of actual conflict — problems that require more than a polite request to sort out — is so pronounced it threatens to undermine the serene parade of beautiful gowns by boring the pants off of those wearing them.”
And while Mr. Travers has new problems to deal with, “The Gilded Age” did gain a modicum of momentum in its back half and especially its finale, even if the actual plot developments were predictable (and not just from historical accuracy). There is potential here, whether it’s...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Gilded Age Season 2 Episode 5, “Close Enough to Touch.”] Denée Benton‘s Peggy Scott experienced a life-threatening moment in The Gilded Age Season 2’s fifth episode. A run-in with aggressive, drunk white men in a Tuskegee restaurant forced Peggy and T. Thomas Fortune (Sullivan Jones) to flee the Alabama town. Booker T. Washington (Michael Braugher) and his wife, Fannie Washington (Brittany Bradford), helped them sneak out of the town in a wagon and hid them in a barn. As they waited in fear, an angry mob of white men with torches hunted them down, and their intentions were lethal. Thankfully, Peggy and Thomas’ whereabouts remained hidden, and the danger passed. The intensity of the moment led to a passionate kiss in the hay between Peggy and the married Thomas, which will have to be addressed in future episodes. Series creator/writer Julian Fellowes tells TV Insider that her experiences in Tuskegee, which ...

The new HBO series “The Gilded Age” hails from “Downton Abbey” creator Julian Fellowes, and much like that hit period series, this one features a lot of characters. Several cadres of characters keep the plot pivoting back and forth between households and prominent locations around 1890s New York, as the show tells a story of New York City on the cusp of change, where the battle between old money and new money — as well as old and new ways of doing things — is being fought.
A mix of veteran actors and actresses balance out some newer talent in Julian Fellowes’ latest fictional show — from “Sex and the City’s” Cynthia Nixon to Meryl Streep’s youngest daughter Louisa Jacobson, who plays a main heroine at the heart of aristocratic New York City.

The Gilded Age Season Two begins with hats. Lots and lots and lots of hats. It is Easter Sunday, and all the women of 1880s New York society are putting on their fanciest headgear before heading to church. And by far the most fabulous hat of all is the one you can see in the picture at the top of this review, a towering concoction of feathers and flowers, placed atop the head of the show’s richest woman, Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon).

Things will heat up in HBO’s “The Gilded Age” Season 2, and not just on the railroads.
As Ward McAllister (Nathan Lane) escorts Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) to some sort of social event, his voiceover reminds viewers that Bertha has almost everything she could ever want.
“Mrs. Russell, you conquered New York,” Lane’s McAllister says at the beginning of the clip released by Max Wednesday morning. “You dine in the best houses. But are you sure it’s wise to start the war with New York society? Aren’t you asking for trouble?”
“Yes, and you’ll need to pick a team,” Coon’s Russell responds. “Head-to-head and one will be the winner.”

Big George Foreman is a film directed by George Tillman Jr. starring Khris Davis.
Some movies simply wait for a great story to do all the work.
Foreman’s life was quite a story.
We can’t say the same for the film.
Movie Review
Some said the voiceover was anti-cinematic, and it was Scorsese (among others) who denied it film after film. This Big George Foreman wants to have a lot of Scorsese without achieving his pace, effectiveness and, above all, grace, and narrative freshness.
Big George Foreman is a film that resorts, at all times, to the obvious, to direct compassion, to that piece of American History a thousand times told in a thousand better ways and with more elaborate plots and less flat characters and, in the end, with more to say.

Everyone has seen the infomercials for the George Foreman Grill, but many younger TV viewers might not be as familiar with his prolific boxing career. Foreman was the oldest boxer ever to win a heavyweight championship, and now fans can see his story on the big screen for the first time in “Big George Foreman,” in theaters Friday, April 28.
“Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World” is based on the remarkable true story of one of the greatest comebacks of all time. Fueled by an impoverished childhood, Foreman channeled his anger into becoming an Olympic Gold medalist and World Heavyweight Champion. When he sees his community struggling spiritually and financially, Foreman returns to the ring and makes history by reclaiming his title, becoming the oldest and most improbable World Heavyweight Boxing Champion ever.

Across a career that spanned four decades and saw him earn two heavyweight titles and a gold medal at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, George Foreman cemented his legacy as one of the greatest boxers of all time. But despite having one of the most remarkable stories in sporting history to work with, Big George Foreman manages to stumble sluggishly from one chapter in his life to the next in a way that’s neither insightful nor entertaining.
George Tillman Jr.’s film plays out largely as a by-the-numbers biopic, charting Foreman’s rise from a troubled Texas youth to a title-winning boxer, then a born-again preacher, then a title-winning boxer again. Khris Davis, previously seen testing out his pugilistic skills on poor Donald Glover in Atlanta, plays Big George from the end of his teenage years to his remarkable comeback as the world’s oldest-ever heavyweight champion at the age of 45.

The full title of the George Foreman biopic provides a not-so-subtle clue as to the film’s prosaicness. The movie about Jake Lamotta vividly signaled the personality of its lead character with Raging Bull. The one about Rocky Graziano jauntily indicated its upbeat nature with Somebody Up There Likes Me. So what does Foreman merit? Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World. It sounds like the title of a biography for young readers, and that’s pretty much how the by-the-numbers film plays.
It’s not surprising that Affirm Films is one of the film’s producers, since Foreman famously underwent a religious epiphany and became a born-again Christian. He retired from boxing for many years and became a minister, preaching first on street corners before becoming working at a Houston church. Few genres in Hollywood history have enjoyed as much staying power as the boxing movie — and it’s not hard to understand why. In addition to satisfying our primal urge to watch large men beat the tar out of each other, they come with a built-in dramatic structure that’s almost impossible to screw up. You set up a feud between two fighters, put the good guy through unimaginable amounts of adversity as he trains, then let it all culminate in a big match that serves as a metaphor for the protagonist’s internal conflict. No matter how admirable you found Barton Fink’s principled refusal to write wrestling movies, Jack Lipnick was on to something when he told him “there’s plenty of poetry right inside that ring.”
So it’s almost impressive that “Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World” is so dull.

So often thought of primarily as the big lug who was so dramatically dispatched by Muhammad Ali in the famous “Rumble in the Jungle” in Zaire in 1974, George Foreman is the main event in Big George Foreman. While there is plenty of boxing here to satisfy sports fans, the film is mild-mannered and genial to a fault as it charts the life of a dirt-poor Texas kid with a devastating punch whose public image transformed over the years from hulking bogeyman to that of a good-natured businessman and man of God.
Ali was such a commanding, entertaining and (mostly) adored worldwide figure, from his emergence as the self-anointed “greatest” to his ultimate status as one of the most beloved and admired men on the planet, that it isn’t easy to watch him take a back seat here to a younger but less charismatic figure onscreen. Boxing movies tend to be pretty great fodder for a harrowing feel-good story. Even people who don't give a damn about boxing otherwise would be hard-pressed not to cheer by the end of "Rocky" or "Cinderella Man." Sure, there is the occasional dark boxing tale, such as "Raging Bull," that makes for equally -- if not more -- compelling cinema. Today though brings us what appears to be an underdog story, and a familiar one for many fans of the sport, as the trailer for "Big George Foreman" is here. Or, to be more specific regarding the title, "Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World." And yes, they did put all of that on the poster.
In any case, this is the tale of George Foreman and, more specifically, his wildly unlikely comeback story as a boxer advanced in his years.

Outside of his boxing career, the narrative will cover Foreman finding his faith, retiring and becoming a preacher. Finally, it will document his return to the ring at the age of 45 when his family and church faces financial hardship.

Exclusive: Sullivan Jones and Lisa Gilroy have been cast as leads opposite Jimmy O. Yang in Interior Chinatown, a new Hulu series from creator/executive producer Charles Yu, who wrote the 2020 bestseller of the same name, Taika Waititi and 20th Television.
Interior Chinatown follows the story of Willis Wu (Yang), a background character trapped in a police procedural trying to find his way into the larger story–and along the way discovers secrets about the strange world he inhabits and his family’s buried history.
Jones and Gilroy will play Miles Turner and Sarah Green, respectively, the two lead detectives on the procedural crime show Black & White.

As Warner Bros attempts to shake up their whole content creation with DC films, only some schedule shifts are happening with Sony Pictures, according to Deadline. One of their biggest moves is pushing the Adam Driver sci-fi actioner, 65, back to the same weekend as Shazam: Fury of the Gods. The studio has faith that the movie will be able to compete with the DC superhero and gets pushed back so the latest Scream film can perform as best as can.
The plot synopsis for 65 reads, “After a catastrophic crash on an unknown planet, pilot Mills (Driver) quickly discovers he’s actually stranded on Earth…65 million years ago. Now, with only one chance at rescue, Mills and the only other survivor, Koa (Ariana Greenblatt), must make their way across an unknown terrain riddled with dangerous prehistoric creatures in an epic fight to survive. Sam Raimi produces. Scott Beck and Bryan Woods wrote A Quiet Place.
