Update: Just kidding: Presumed Innocent star Ruth Negga will submit in Best Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actress — not lead as previously announced — at the Emmys.

The switch comes a day before the Emmy submission deadline on Thursday.

Negga, who plays Jake Gyllenhaal's wife Barbara Sabich on the Apple TV+ limited series, had moved to lead on April 30, surprising pundits and awards fans. The Oscar nominee had been expected to enter in supporting and had been nominated for Best Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series at the Independent Spirit Awards earlier this year. She was previously in eighth place in Gold Derby's supporting actress odds. In the week since her brief move to lead, Negga rose all the way to seventh place in the odds.

Jake Gyllenhaal has made his transition into television with Apple TV+’s show Presumed Innocent, which marks a huge shift in his career as an actor. Gyllenhaal, who has a long and illustrious film career, faced the challenges of working in a different format of storytelling.

All this resulted in the critical acclaim that the show received, and also getting renewed for a second season.

David E. Kelley says new ending for ‘Presumed Innocent’ on Apple TV+ ‘wasn’t mandatory’
Image
David E. Kelley adapted Scott Turow’s bestseller Presumed Innocent as an eight-episode series for Apple TV+ last year. Between the book and the 1990 movie adaptation, the original revelation of the murderer might no longer be a surprise. So, Kelley chose a different character to be the killer in his season finale.

“It wasn’t mandatory,” Kelley told Gold Derby on the red carpet at Apple TV+’s FYC space at the Hollywood Athletic Club. “I was open to the idea that it could still be the same killer but we kind of let the story speak to us. As it was unfolding, we settled on the route we took.”

Jake Gyllenhaal plays Rusty Sabich, a lawyer accused of slaying his colleague, Caroline Polhemus (Renate Reinsve), with whom he was having an affair. Rusty’s nemesis, Tommy Molto (Peter Sarsgaard), prosecutes Rusty despite a clear conflict of interest. Though the...

All 34 ‘Black Mirror’ episodes ranked, including ‘USS Callister: Into Infinity’ and ‘Eulogy’
Image
Every new season of Black Mirror launches a feverish debate over which episode was the best. Emmy voters gave three consecutive Best TV Movie awards to "San Junipero" (2017), "USS Callister" (2018), and "Bandersnatch" (2019), but how does the entire fandom rate the best and worst installments? We've consulted the cumulative IMDb scores for all seasons and have come up with the definitive ranking of Black Mirror episodes. Can you guess the No. 1 choice?

Season 7 was released in April 2025 and brought the total number of episodes and specials to 34. Created by Charlie Brooker, the sci-fi anthology series began on the U.K.'s Channel 4 in 2011 before moving to Netflix (and becoming a worldwide phenomenon) in 2016. The show took a four-year break after Season 5, thanks in part to the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic, but that just gave people even more time to relive their favorite episodes from the beginning.

‘Presumed Innocent’ Will Submit As Limited Series For Emmys Despite Season 2 Renewal By Apple
Image
Exclusive: Season 1 of Apple TV+’s legal thriller Presumed Innocent will compete in the Limited or Anthology Series categories at the 2025 Emmy Awards. The designation has been approved by the TV Academy, sources said.

It comes after Presumed Innocent was submitted as a drama series for the Golden Globes and SAG Awards, earning star Jake Gyllenhaal a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Series, Drama. The show also is being featured in various drama category Emmy prognostications.

The reason for the switch is the evolution Presumed Innocent took over the last few months. The show started off as a limited series adaptation of Scott Turow’s bestselling novel of the same name with no blueprint for a second season.

When Apple TV+ ordered a second season following the original installment’s breakout success, the initial idea was to follow The White Lotus model...

Ambulance Is a Hit on Netflix Despite Being a Huge Box Office Flop
Image
Ambulance, directed by Michael Bay, is a Netflix hit despite being his biggest box office failure, grossing just $52 million. Climbing the global Netflix charts, the action spectacle quickly garnered 9.3 million hours viewed. While it's Bay's biggest box office bomb, it's also his most acclaimed film on Rotten Tomatoes thanks to Jake Gyllenhaal's performance and state-of-the-art camera work.

Ambulance, the high-octane action spectacle directed by Michael Bay, has become a Netflix hit, according to the streamer's international metrics. The much-maligned film released in 2022 is Bay's biggest failure at the box office to date. It only grossed about $52 million from a $40 million budget, a result that disappointed its producers, who had considered the potential of a Bay action joint while the theater industry was still recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic. In total, his films had grossed almost $8 billion, so they absolutely trusted him.

However, it's been climbing to the top of...

Jake Gyllenhaal Had Steak Eating Contests with House of the Dragon Director
Image
Presumed Innocent executive producer/director Greg Yaitanes was a total Jake Gyllenhaal fanboy when he met the actor prior to working with the actor on the hit series. I usually just want to get [the fanboy thing] out of the way, Yaitanes told MovieWeb in a recent interview. Working with Tim Robbins [in Castle Rock], I had to geek out about Shawshank Redemption. But I go to films because Jake's in them. I'll go see Prisoners because he's in it. I'll go see Enemy because he's in it. It attracts me his work and his way of working, which is incredibly natural. There's such an ease that he has in front of the camera that has taken 30 years to craft, and it's beautiful to watch.

Its something to marvel at in Presumed Innocent, in fact. Yaitanes directed about five episodes of the series, which is based on Scott Turow's bestselling 1987 novel, which was...

Presumed Innocent Cast Didn't Know 'Who the Killer Was' Until the Finale
Image
None of them knew for certain who the killer was until right before we shot the eighth episode, so that was the first shock, admitted Anne Sewitsky, the executive producer and director of Apple TV+s sizzling courtroom thriller, Presumed Innocent. Sewitsky, the Norwegian-American filmmaker whose previous endeavors include Monsterland and Black Mirror, directed the head-turning eighth and final episode of the season. The re-imagined tale, one of Apple TV+'s most-watched dramas, revolved around short-fused prosecutor Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal), who becomes a prime suspect in the gritty murder of one of his colleagues (Renate Reinsve).

The series is based on Scott Turow's bestselling 1987 novel, which was adapted into the 1990 film starring Harrison Ford. Sewitsky went on to say that Gyllenhaaland the rest of the cast were very surprised by the big reveal. Spoilers below:

‘Presumed Innocent’ Finale Updates the Film’s Ending While Dumbing It Down — Spoilers
Image
Editor’s note: This post discusses the ending of Apple TV+’s “Presumed Innocent.”

No ending that includes Elizabeth Marvel and Bill Camp gardening together in blissful harmony — with Mr. Marvel wearing a Chicago Bears shirt — can be all bad. And, to be fair, the “Presumed Innocent” finale accomplished exactly what the series has been striving for throughout its lengthy, often hysterical (in every meaning of the word) eight-episode run: It ended with a twist as gasp-inducing in the moment as it was groan-worthy a few minutes later.

After all, the title and history behind “Presumed Innocent” point viewers toward an ending where the guilty party is hiding in plain sight. Someone who’s conveniently, almost instinctively written off not just because they couldn’t commit murder, but also because they wouldn’t commit murder. That rules out Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal), a loud and violent fella who had an affair with the victim,...

‘Presumed Innocent’ Director Teases ‘Surprising Turns’ in Season 1’s Finale
Image
It’s almost time to finally (hopefully?) find out who killed Carolyn Polhemus (Renate Reinseive) when Presumed Innocent‘s Season 1 finale, “The Verdict,” arrives on Apple TV+ this Wednesday (July 24). The legal drama has already been chock full of shocking twists throughout its first seven episodes — so much so that there are several bona fide suspects, even if only Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal) is on trial for her murder. Ahead of the finale’s debut, TV Insider caught up with Anne Sewitsky, the director of Episode 8 (who also directed Episodes 1 and 2), to find out how this engaging show came to be and what’s ahead for the finale and Season 2. Broadly, what drew you to this project, and how did you want to differentiate it from the movie and book? Anne Sewitsky: Well, I had, of course, seen the movie. I had not read the book — and I did that eventually,...

Presumed Innocent Is Ok but Harrison Fords 1990 Version Is Better
Image
Quick Links Presumed Innocent Makes Too Many Unnecessary Changes Harrison Fords Portrayal of Rusty Is Better Than Jake Gyllenhaal's The new limited series Presumed Innocent on Apple TV+ stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Renate Reinsve in a gripping murder mystery storyline. While the show updates the story for modern times, many changes seem unnecessary and fail to enhance the overall viewing experience. Jake Gyllenhaal's portrayal of Rusty Sabich falls short compared to Harrison Ford's performance in the 1990 film adaptation.

In the latest limited series from Apple TV+, Presumed Innocent, Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Rusty Sabich, a prosecutor who ultimately becomes the prime suspect in the murder of his colleague, Carolyn Polhemus (Renate Reinsve). Following the news of her horrific killing, Rusty initially leads the investigation at the District Attorneys Office. Is Presumed Innocent Based On A True Story?
Image
Apple TV+ thriller "Presumed Innocent" is not based on a true story, but a work of fiction adapted by David E. Kelley. The show delves into themes of obsession and betrayal, following Chief Deputy Prosecutor Rusty Sabich's personal turmoil. Originally a book by Scott Turow, "Presumed Innocent" was also adapted into a 1990 movie starring Harrison Ford.

Many wonder whether Apple TV+'s slow-burn thriller Presumed Innocent is based on a true story. The Apple TV+ original show revolves around the brutal murder of Carolyn Polhemus, a colleague at the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney's office. The case becomes intensely personal and scandalous when Chief Deputy Prosecutor Rusty Sabich is accused of the crime. Sabich, who had an illicit affair with Polhemus, must now navigate a treacherous legal and personal landscape to prove his innocence. As the investigation unfolds, Sabich's life unravels both professionally and personally.

Nicole Kidman’s 2 Hit Shows Are the Reason Why Jake Gyllenhaal’s First Apple TV Venture Will Be a Huge Success Despite Harrison Ford Already Nailing the Role in 1990
Image
Jake Gyllenhaal is one of the bravest actors of this generation, who does not hesitate to showcase his talents in different genres of films. As a result, his career is full of risky ventures in different film genres that were once deemed to be flops, but surpassed everyone’s expectations and became a smash-hit blockbuster. From 2001’s Donnie Darko to his recent flick Road House, he has given his fans numerous movies that keep them entertained.

Moreover, it looks like the Southpaw actor has jumped on the reboot trend wagon once again as he is all set to take on a role once portrayed by Harrison Ford in the film Presumed Innocent. Nevertheless, the upcoming TV Series is going to be a massive hit because David E. Kelley is associated with the project, setting high hopes for the Apple TV+ series featuring 8 episodes.

Presumed Innocent (2024)
Image
Streaming on: Apple TV+

Episodes viewed: 7 of 8

Fresh from routinely beating up dozens of violent idiots in the riotously entertaining Prime Video remake of Road House, Jake Gyllenhaal now dips his toe into the world of long-form prestige TV drama for the first time in what is ostensibly a more cerebral role as public prosecutor Rusty Sabich (rhymes with “savage”) in this new adaptation of Scott Turow’s 1987 bestseller.

The book was previously turned into a hit movie with Harrison Ford in the lead role in 1990, but while Ford’s performance was suitably enigmatic, never giving much away, Gyllenhaal depicts Sabich as a charming family man and principled public servant who also has major anger and honesty issues beneath his slickly handsome exterior. The more we get to know him, there’s an increasing sense that Gyllenhaal’s version of the character is desperately trying to keep a lid on his emotions.

Presumed Innocent TV Review
Image
Plot: Following chief deputy prosecutor Rusty Sabich, the series takes viewers on a gripping journey through the horrific murder that upends the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney’s office when one of its own is suspected of the crime. The series explores obsession, sex, politics, and the power and limits of love, as the accused fights to hold his family and marriage together.

Review: Everything old is new again. In 1990, Harrison Ford led the first adaptation of Presumed Innocent, based on the best-selling novel by Scott Turow. A critical success and the eighth-highest-grossing film of the year, Presumed Innocent was a masterful courtroom thriller from director Alan J. Pakula that also delivered one of the best twists ever. While it spawned two small-screen sequels, neither lived up to the original film. Over three decades later, we are getting a remake of Presumed Innocent from the one-two punch of David E. Kelley and J.J. Abrams.

‘Presumed Innocent’ Is A Tale Of Two Trials – In Court & At Home, Star Jake Gyllenhaal Says – Tribeca Festival
Image
Two trials play out in the new Apple TV+ adaptation of lawyer-novelist Scott Turow’s 1988 bestselling legal thriller, Presumed Innocent: the criminal case against a Chicago prosecutor charged with murdering a colleague, and the nightmare at home that the murder trial visits on the family of the accused.

Those parallel ordeals stood out for actor Jake Gyllenhaal, who stars in the eight-episode limited series that premieres on Wednesday and runs through July 24. At Sunday’s premiere of Presumed Innocent at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, Gyllenhaal spoke in a panel discussion with showrunner and writer David E. Kelley and two directors, Anne Sewitsky and Greg Yaitanes, about “the trial of the family and the actual trial” and “the juxtaposition between the two.”

“As brilliant as the writing and the acting is in the courtroom scenes, I really think it becomes like its own courtroom, too, in the house,...
