Winfield Scott(1920-2015)

IMDbProStarmeterSee rank
Winfield Scott was born in New York City. He was initially a singer/songwriter. Early in his career he was known as Robbie Kirk of the singing group 'The Cues". In 1954 he worked with record producer Art Ertegun of Atlantic Records, where he met La Vern Baker. He wrote "Tweedlee Dee" in 1954 for Ms Baker which became a #4 R'n'B and #14 Pop hit for her. It was one of the first "crossover hits". As often the case at that time, Georgia Gibbs' cover version of "Tweedlee Dee" received a majority of the airplay on some stations. Winfield often collaborated with Otis Blackwell who introduced him to Elvis Presley. He wrote the "super hits" "Return To Sender", "Devil In Disguise" and "One Broken Heart For Sale", as well as several other songs used in Elvis' films. Most recently "I'm A Roustabout", written by Winfield and deleted from Roustabout (1964), has surfaced and has been released on an Elvis Compilation CD.
