“Spartacus: House of Ashur will be a history-bending, erotic, thrilling, roller-coaster experience that builds on everything that made the original series a colossal hit,” reads Starz’s synopsis. “The series poses the question: what if Ashur, played by fan favorite Nick Tarabay, hadn’t died on Mount Vesuvius at the end of Spartacus: Vengeance? And what if he had been gifted the gladiator school once owned by Batiatus in return for aiding the Romans in killing Spartacus and putting an end to the slave rebellion?”

The CW missed a big opportunity with "The Secret Circle" as a potential replacement for "The Vampire Diaries." Consistency is key for new shows to succeed, but "The Secret Circle" faced hiatuses that hurt its momentum. With captivating visuals and exciting storylines, "The Secret Circle" had the potential to surpass "The Vampire Diaries."
The Vampire Diaries was a massive hit for The CW, but I'll never forget the network's controversial decision to cancel its best replacement. The series in question had a fantastic cast comprising well-known names and newer actors, who all came together to craft a great show. For much of the time this series was on the air, it was better than The Vampire Diaries. Both shows had many of the same people working behind the scenes, so it felt like The CW wanted to replicate the popularity of The Vampire Diaries.
It's a shame it didn't get a big enough chance.

The epic story of the Trojan War is being retold in a new series at Netflix called Troy: Fall of a City. It looks like they are taking a Game of Thrones style approach to telling this legendary story.
The tale of the Trojan War has been told many times over the years, the most famous account is Homer's The Iliad. But, I'm sure many of you also remember Wolfgang Peterson’s Troy, which starred Brad Pitt. I think I enjoyed that film more than most people. It has some cool stuff in it.
Now, we have this new series which follows the story of when the prince of Troy, Paris, elopes with the queen of Sparta, Helen. Here's the synopsis:
An epic story of love and war, intrigue and betrayal. When Helen and Paris fall in love, they trigger a chain of events that threatens their families and the city of Troy.

Netflix is here to give Wolfgang Petersen a run for his money. The company and BBC One’s Trojan War epic “Troy: Fall Of A City” begins streaming next month on Netflix, and the official trailer has debuted promising tons of swords and sandals action. But will the show be a “Game of Thrones” success or another “Marco Polo” for Netflix? That’s surely the question on executives’ minds.
“Troy: Fall Of A City” centers on the love story between Helen and Paris, which triggers a chain of events that threatens their families and the city of Troy. Louis Hunter (“The Fosters”) and Bella Dayne (“Humans”) star in the lead roles, with David Threfall as King Priam of Troy and Frances O’Connor as Hecuba, Queen of Troy.
The epic series premiers on Netflix April 6.

Writer of The Night Manager David Farr tells us about new drama Troy: Fall Of A City, starting this Saturday on BBC One...
It has to be noted that the Trojan War, though ripe for retellings, is a story that the majority of an audience will believe they already know. David Farr, writer of BBC One’s new Saturday night epic, would be one of the first to admit it. What makes Troy: Fall Of A City different, however, comes down to perspective. Whereas most tellings focus on the Greeks, Farr wanted to look at what the war must have been like for the Trojans.

Beginning with Paris’ discovery of his true heritage and love story with Helen of Troy, The Night Manager writer wanted to create something from Greek mythology that focused on character over spectacle.

If Karen Skloss’ feature narrative debut The Honor Farm possesses anything it’s an abundance of style. This is a gorgeously shot prom night turned mushroom trip romp of millennial excess caught in the throes of dream. We meet Lucy (Olivia Grace Applegate) walking through the woods in her dress — trees covered in toilet paper and forests of white light and ribbons manifesting a border between danger and safety. The evil (assumedly) arrives in the form of a person adorned by a stag’s head (the eyes blink); her salvation a boy with what we hope is love in his heart. It’s fantasy seeping into reality or perhaps just a series of quick visions devoid of truth beyond emotion rendered as experience. And as soon as it arrives it’s gone.

It was a busy year for me at the 2017 SXSW Film Festival, as I had the opportunity to watch 16 films (17, including the 10th anniversary screening of Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon). Here are my thoughts on the final three films that I had a chance to see while in Austin: Like Me, Game of Death, and The Honor Farm.
Like Me: I had absolutely no idea what to expect from first-time director Robert Mockler’s Like Me, but after seeing what he could do with his cautionary tale about the dangers of social media obsession, and how it can affect those unable to cope with the isolation it often leads to, I’m an instant fan of Mockler. Like Me ended up being the most unpredictably wonderful movie-going experience I had during all of SXSW 2017.

Some of you will Love The Honor Farm. Let me start by saying that. A prom-night virgin plans her perfect deflowering, only to have carefully-laid plans ruined by drunkenness and the night’s “haunted” escape. It’s a tale of choices, and not being forced into an idealistic “normality.” One illuminated by director Karen Skloss’ ability to capture a full moon’s glow upon backwoods forestation. Very art-house heavy, getting caught up in poetic discussions about “now” being the only moment that will ever matter. “The past is forgotten and the future is unknown.” True about futures, but good luck “forgetting” the lack of completion that devalues The Honor Farm beyond lusty teenage daydreams (beautiful hallucinations, admittedly).
Olivia Grace Applegate stars as Lucy, a cheery teenager with romanticized hopes for prom. Take pictures, dance happily and go all the way with your high school sweetheart. The right of passage so many endure.

With little over a month to go until Austin plays host to SXSW 2017 for another year, organizers of the annual showcase have announced that James Franco’s drama The Disaster Artist has been added to the stacked lineup.
Based on Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell’s non-fiction book The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room, Franco’s passion project is set to recount the infamous story behind The Room, Tommy Wiseau’s widely-derided pic that has since gone on to become something of a cult classic. No release date has been set, but we know that the feature will be written and directed by Franco, who stars as the eccentric Wiseau, and features a cast comprised of Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Josh Hutcherson, Ari Graynor, Jacki Weaver, and former Community star Alison Brie. Jack Goes Home is a new movie that looks at coping with loss, or to be more precise, not being able to cope with it.

There’s no question that Thomas Dekker‘s sophomore effort as writer-director is a head-scratcher. What you as a viewer must decide is whether or not to keep scratching. I don’t think anyone outside of Dekker himself can truly unpack the type of psychological chaos occurring within Jack Goes Home, and I like that notion. This is an artist using his medium as an outlet to exorcise demons without necessarily factoring in audience expectations. It doesn’t supply easy answers, leaves a ton of loose ends as far as what’s real or fantasy, and turns deadly violent on a dime. It seeks divisiveness by throwing the kitchen sink of horrific tragedies onto Jack Thurlowe (Rory Culkin) until he can no longer breathe before letting him stew — simultaneously unhinged and deceptively anticlimactic.
But the latter isn’t deflating as much as unexpected. Most horror films begin where this one ends,...

Revenge, grief and piercing secrets make Jack Goes Home quite the interesting genre hybrid, but Thomas Dekker’s disparaging darkness might rely a bit too heavily on haunted aesthetics. The story itself is one of loss and homecoming, hinged on a character’s wading through pools of emotional unrest. People cope in infinite ways, and Dekker’s appropriation of Jack is meant to show man’s ability to teeter at wit’s end – a brutal inner tumble that continually drags us down to deeper depths. Some unsettling imagery couples with a dreamlike waltz through personal strife, yet come the film’s twisted finale, Dekker loses grasp of the self-discovery at stake. Brittle reveals crumble at the cusp of understanding, meant to rattle instead of satisfy – the whole style over substance cliché rearing its head once again.

Here's the trailer and creepy-ass poster for Jack Goes Home, a new psychological thriller starring Rory Culkin as a guy who goes back to his hometown to attend his father's funeral and discovers some mysterious tapes in the attic. Just as I was ready to write this off as another haunted house movie, the trailer hints that it's possible there's something more devious going on under the surface: maybe someone is just messing with him and trying to get him to go crazy. It's unclear exactly what's going on here, but that's what makes it a good trailer that doesn't ruin the whole movie for you ahead of time.

"I always thought this house was haunted..." Momentum has released a trailer for an indie thriller called Jack Goes Home, from actor-turned-filmmaker Thomas Dekker, who both wrote and directed this film. Rory Culkin stars as a magazine editor, along with Britt Robertson as his fiance, who goes back to his home town after learning that his parents are in a deadly car accident. Things get crazy when he returns. "Jack comes to learn that the idyllic world he has believed in since infancy is in fact a nightmare playground full of lies, deception, violence and murder." The full cast includes Lin Shaye, Natasha Lyonne, Nikki Reed, Daveigh Chase and Louis Hunter. This trailer gets very creepy and very weird in the second half. If the season premiere played out like a suspense film, The Fosters Season 4 Episode 2 played out like a horror flick, with eerie music, a shower scene, sex, a ghost, and more than enough jump scares.

It’s hard to believe that another South by Southwest Film Festival is almost upon us, and this year’s lineup is yet another stellar collection of indie films, shorts, documentaries and experiential projects from all over the world. As we prepare to bring our readers extensive coverage over the next week from Austin, here’s a look at the 11 genre-related films and TV shows we’re excited to check out during the festival, which begins on Friday, March 11th.
[Writer’s Note: During Sundance 2016, this writer had the privilege of covering two great genre films: Under the Shadow from Babak Anvari and Mickey Keating’s Carnage Park. Since I had the chance to catch both of these films back in January, I decided it wouldn’t be fair to include them here in my preview piece (however, genre fans attending SXSW should definitely check out both films during the fest, as they are equally incredible).]
In a Valley of Violence (Director/Screenwriter: Ti West)
Festival Synopsis: From Blumhouse, the film tells the story of a drifter named Paul who arrives in a small town, seeking revenge on the thugs who murdered his friend. Sisters Mary Anne and Ellen, who run the town’s hotel, help Paul in his quest for vengeance. Cast: Ethan Hawke, Taissa Farmiga, James Ransone, Karen Gillan, John Travolta (World Premiere)

It seems not even magic couldn't help bring the ratings up. The CW has cancelled The Secret Circle after one season of 22 episodes.
A supernatural series, The Secret Circle follows teenager Cassie Blake (Britt Robertson) who, after moving to Chance Harbor, discovers that she is a witch and part of a young secret coven. The show also stars Thomas Dekker, Gale Harold, Phoebe Tonkin, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Shelly Hennig, Louis Hunter, Ashley Crow, and Natasha Henstridge.
When the season began, it looked like The CW had found the perfect match for their big hit, The Vampire Diaries. The premiere drew a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.05 million viewers. These days, those are excellent numbers for the smallest network.
In week two, the ratings dropped 31% but were still strong by CW standards. Unfortunately, over the course of...

Fans of "Secret Circle" (Thursdays at 9 p.m. Et on The CW) were shocked when Nick (Louis Hunter) seemingly returned from the dead in last week's episode. But Chris Zylka, who plays Nick’s broody older brother Jake, couldn't be more excited about his resurrection. After all, he never had a chance to film with his little brother since Nick was killed by Charles in the fifth episode.
"Nick is back in a crazy way, and he's much more powerful now," Zylka told HuffPost TV. "He's going to play a really big role in the next couple of episodes, especially for Jake. They didn't really have the best relationship, so you're definitely going to see them go on quite the journey."
However, Nick's return is still clouded in mystery. "Is he back from the dead? Is he a ghost? Did we go back in time? Who knows! Well, we know,...

"The Secret Circle" shocked fans last fall by killing off a main character and fan favorite from the source novels, Nick. At the time, Louis Hunter told us that he'd be up for returning to the Circle if the story called for it. "I think that the show being what it is, it could be really organic, and I really loved working with every single person that I worked with up in Vancouver," he said, "So if I got the chance to be on the show again, I wouldn't hesitate at all."
Within the Circle, Nick was replaced by his witch-hunter older brother, Jake (Chris Zylka). Zylka often laments the fact that viewers never got to see Nick and Jake together as brothers, so he was thrilled when executive producer Andrew Miller told the cast that Hunter would be returning as the famed traitor witch, back from the dead with a vengeance.

Fans of The Secret Circle had no idea Nick (Louis Hunter), who died earlier this season, would somehow return in last week’s episode. But Chris Zylka, who plays Nick’s brother Jake, had suspected it was coming for a while. “Louis secretly was telling Thomas that they were trying to negotiate something for him to come back awhile ago, and that sparked complete joy in me because Louis and I had never met. Here we play brothers, and all I want to do is meet the guy to kinda get to know him so there was that sense that we knew each other before,...

"Nick is back in a big way," Chris Zylka warns.
Way to understate the obvious! First, The Secret Circle spent time introducing us to the new coven members who would help Cassie (Britt Robertson) discover her magic, only to then kill one of the series' supposed main characters off in the fifth episode. Nick (Louis Hunter) was then replaced by his older, more brooding brother Jake (Zylka), who eventually went from working with the Witch Hunters to against them.
Save These Shows: 14 bubble shows we hope will survive
Now, it seems, Nick has been resurrected to track down the remaining crystal and thwart the Circle's attempts at combining them to create the sure-fire weapon against the Witch Hunters, the Crystal Skull. How will the Circle feel about Nick's return? For Jake, it may not be a happy reunion. "Jake's going to...

After losing Cassie (Britt Robertson) to Adam (Thomas Dekker) and ending his fling with Faye (Phoebe Tonkin), what's in store for Jake (Chris Zylka) on "The Secret Circle?" Saving Cassie Blake, for starters. As if any boy in Chance Harbor had anything better to do.
In Thursday night's all-new episode, entitled "Return" (9 p.m. Est on The CW), Cassie's thought-to-be-dead evil father, John Blackwell, shows up on her doorstep asking for the medallion she found in the wreckage of the fire that killed their parents.

Jessica tells HollywoodLife.com how Melissa will get her groove back, plus why she really hopes Diana is the other Blackwell child. Let's be honest: Melissa (Jessica Parker Kennedy) hasn't really been herself since Nick (Louis Hunter) was killed earlier this season on The Secret Circle. "Melissa is on a journey of, for lack of a better term, finding herself," Jessica tells us, adding that -- believe it or not -- Melissa's heartbreak is far from over. "Before she finds her groove, she's going to go through a bunch of stuff." Naturally, I had to ask her if this "stuff" could potentially include a new love interest for the down-trodden witch. "I think it's possible," she teases. "We haven't gone there with the script yet, but I hope so." I second that. . Read on for my full interview with Jessica... Gale Harold as The Secret Circle's Charles Meade
With last night’s episode of the latest CW addictive series, The Secret Circle, there was one departure from the show (at least for now) and a new, surprising revelation that viewers probably didn’t see coming. (I sure didn’t!) To help make sense of the unexpected twists and turns as well as tease what is to come on the witch-based series, Executive Producer Andrew Miller and series star Gale Harold joined a group of journalists at the CW offices earlier this week to answer all the burning questions after an early viewing of last night’s “Balcoin” episode.

On the popular CW drama The Secret Circle, actor Gale Harold plays Charles Meade, a powerful lawyer who lives in the small town of Chance Harbor, Washington. His daughter is the sweet-natured teenager Diana (Shelley Hennig), who happens to be a witch, just like her mysterious and often sinister father. During an interview to promote the mid-season finale on November 10th (the show will return on January 5, 2012), Gale Harold talked about the appeal of this role, the appearance of Charles’ mother on the show (played by Stepfanie Kramer), the continued power-play between Charles and Dawn (Natasha Henstridge), and how his character would like to be in charge of his own actions and decisions. He also talked about how he would love to try a comedy role, at some point. Check out what he had to say after the jump: Here’s the show’s synopsis: Cassie Blake (Britt Robertson) was a happy,...

Jessica Parker Kennedy fills us in on Chance Harbor's newest 'bad boy,' Jake! Fans of The Secret Circle are still grieving the loss of Nick (Louis Hunter) after last week's game-changing episode, and while the surviving circle members will certainly be in mourning this week, there's a new force in town who's bound to shake things up even more. HollywoodLife.com chatted with Jessica Parker Kennedy (aka Nick's "widow" Melissa) for the scoop on Chris Zylka, who makes his debut Oct. 20 as Chance Harbor's newest bad boy. "Jake is a really great character," Jessica told us. "He's mysterious and sexy and cool and he's a bad boy. Those are four pretty solid adjectives, but they could also be used to describe Melissa's dearly departed hook-up buddy, Nick. Does that mean sparks will fly between Melissa and Jake -- who also happens to be Faye's (Phoebe Tonkin) ex-boyfriend -- as well?...

With last week's shocking episode, "The Secret Circle" showrunner Andrew Miller took a major risk in writing off Louis Hunter's character, Nick, a fan-favorite character from the book series that spawned the show.

From 'Let's start a petition' to 'I don't think I can keep watching,' fans of 'The Secret Circle' are mourning the loss of Nick Armstrong. Even though I knew going into the Oct. 13 episode of The Secret Circle that Nick (Louis Hunter) was going to die, nothing could have prepared me for the flood of emotions I felt watching him go -- and watching his fellow circle members react to the tragedy. And I clearly wasn't alone, as dozens of outraged commenters took to HollywoodLife.com's recap of the episode with their own sentiments of sadness, frustration -- and in one case, dreams of a shirtless ghostly future.
