'That's Going to Bring Some Ptsd': Russell T Davies Teases Ruby's Future & New Partner in Doctor Who Season 2
Image
When Doctor Who returns for Ncuti Gatwa's second season, the Doctor will have a new companion in the form of Varada Sethu's Belinda Chandra. But his old companion Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson, will also be around.

While teasing the new season to Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Russell T Davies spoke about what viewers can expect from Ruby this season. Though her arc of finding her birth mother was completed at the end of season one, Ruby is still a part of the Doctor's life. But her experiences have forever changed her.

"Ruby's story is like, what happens to a companion once your life with the Doctor ends?" Davies told the magazine. "What happens to life back on Earth? And believe you me, that's going to bring some Ptsd with it. You've really been through some stuff, but it's a beautiful chance to stretch and explore Millie's character and Millie's performance as well.

Studiocanal’s M-k Kennedy on Company’s Ambition to Become a ‘Television Studio With Worldwide Presence’ Through Tentpole Series Like ‘Paris Has Fallen’ and ‘Apollo Has Fallen’ (Exclusive)
Image
With only one year under her belt as Studiocanal’s executive managing director of TV series, M-k Kennedy, who joined from Netflix, is leveling up the scripted ambitions of the French pay TV group’s production arm.

After spearheading Studiocanal’s first in-house international series, “Paris Has Fallen” — which broke rating records on Canal+ and topped the charts on Amazon U.K. and Hulu in the U.S. — Kennedy reveals to Variety that the highly anticipated second season of the anthology, “Apollo Has Fallen,” has started filming. Rather than taking place in a single location, the eight-part series will hop from country to country, unfolding everywhere from the Libyan coast to the streets of Madrid, with principal photography taking place across the U.K., Marta and Spain. The series is produced by Studiocanal, Urban Myth Films, Millenium and G-Base, who were also behind “Paris Has Fallen,” which sold to more than 170 territories worldwide.

5 Best TV Shows Like Netflix's Adolescence
Image
If you've been hearing a lot about the new Netflix original series "Adolescence" recently, I'm not surprised. This dark, troubling, and gripping story of a young boy named Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper) who's accused of a grievous crime features four episodes — all of which are shot in a single take — making this limited series a technical marvel by any standard. /Film's own Chris Evangelista declared, upon its release, that "Adolescence" might just be the best original Netflix series in the entire history of the streaming service, and frankly, I'm not inclined to argue with him. Across those four episodes, "Adolescence" explores Jamie's disturbed psyche and, stunningly, makes a huge reveal right at the start: at the end of the very first episode, we see video proof of Jamie murdering a young girl from his class.

Thanks to this, the series is able to explore the motivations behind Jamie's brutal attack,...

‘A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story,’ About the Last Woman Hanged in Britain, Started With an Email

A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story, a four-part drama series starring Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody, Murder on the Orient Express, The Politician) that tells the story of the last woman to be hanged in Britain from her point of view, premiered in the U.S. on streaming service BritBox this week and will hit U.K. streamer Itvx in March.

Britbox’s A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story Is Well-Cast but Unremarkable
Image
The following contains spoilers for A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story. now streaming on BritBox.

BritBox's A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story wants to add to British television's long history of great crime dramas. It's halfway there, with a cast whom fans will know -- even if they don't recognize the actors right away in the 1950s setting. But the script for the four-episode miniseries isn't intriguing enough to make viewers care about Ruth's predicament, beyond the terrible way in which she was executed.

As the title indicates, Ruth was the victim of abuse at the hands of her boyfriend David Blakely. She becomes the police's prime suspect when David ends up dead. The miniseries features great performances by Lucy Boynton as Ruth and Toby Jones as her beleaguered solicitor John Bickford. But it doesn't separate itself enough from countless other true crime stories, or stories about women who have been wronged.

Doctor Who Star Explains Why Martha Jones' Return Was Canceled
Image
Former Doctor Who star Freema Agyeman has revealed why a return for her character Martha Jones was scrapped. Martha was the Tenth Doctor's main companion in Doctor Who's third season, where she traveled the world amassing forces to help free humanity from The Master's enslavement.

Martha was then brought back as part of an all-star team of former Doctor Who companions in season four's two part finale, where Ten (David Tennant) and Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) called all of their friends together to fight off a Dalek invasion of earth. These episodes saw Martha seemingly being recruited by Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) to join his black-ops team, though full-time appearances in the Torchwood spinoff series never materialized.

"I've Worked With Every Other Doctor": Alex Kingston Wants Big Finish To Do One Big 'Doctor Who' Companions Audio Drama
Image
When people love something, they often can't get enough of it — that's what leads to fanart, fanfiction, cosplaying, and the like. For Doctor Who fans, many of their favorite characters have had the opportunity for their stories to continue in the form of audio dramas. Big Finish Productions, founded in 1996, primarily produces audiobooks and audio plays, and one IP that they produce is Doctor Who. Collider's Maggie Lovitt recently moderated a panel at MegaCon in Orlando, Florida featuring actors who have all played companions in Doctor Who. Alex Kingston, who played River Song, Freema Agyeman, who played Martha Jones, Billie Piper, who played Rose Tyler, Arthur Darvill, who played Rory Williams, Jenna Coleman, who played Clara Oswald, and Mandip Gill, who played Yasmin Khan, were all in attendance. Lovitt asked, for those that have done audio dramas (everyone except Coleman), what was it like to continue their character's stories?...

"I Was Working With a Sack Full of Puppies": Alex Kingston Explains How Matt Smith's 'Doctor Who' Years Evolved
Image
With more than 60 years of history behind a science fiction franchise like Doctor Who, tons of actors have poured their blood, sweat, and tears into making the world come to life. Between the years of 2010 and 2014, those actors were usually Matt Smith (House of the Dragon), Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy), Arthur Darvill(DC's Legends of Tomorrow), Alex Kingston(A Discovery of Witches), andJenna Coleman(The Jetty). Smith portrayed the Eleventh Doctor with Gillan and Darvill, playing a married couple, companions Amy Pond and Rory Williams, affectionately nicknamed 'The Ponds.' Kingston reprised her role as Professor River Song throughout Smith's tenure and Coleman was the Eleventh Doctor's final companion, Clara Oswald. This weekend, during a panel at MegaCon in Orlando, Florida, moderated by Collider's Maggie Lovitt, Kingston reflected on how the cast evolved during Matt Smith's time as the Eleventh Doctor, even if it was chaotic at times.

Legends of Tomorrow Cast Reveal Their Dream Dcu Roles
Image
The DC Legends of Tomorrow cast would all love to return one day, even if it's in a different universe.

Reassembling at a Megacon Orlando panel, Legends actor Caity Lotz, Brandon Routh, Arthur Darvill, and Matt Ryan were all asked what characters they'd like to play if James Gunn ever cast them in the Dcu timeline. In response, Lotz and Darvill selected Catwoman and Alfred Pennyworth, respectively, while Routh chose Superman, having previously played him in Superman Returns and reprised his role in Crisis on Infinite Earths alongside his Arrowverse performance as Ray Palmer/the Atom. Ryan, meanwhile, selected John Constantine, the role he played for nearly a decade across NBC's short-lived Constantine series, the Arrowverse, and multiple animated films, including the DC Animated Movie Universe's three-part Crisis adaptation.

I Can’t Believe I Forgot a Young Andrew Garfield Was in ‘Doctor Who’

Quick Links What Is 'Doctor Who' About? Who Is Andrew Garfield? Fans Forget Andrew Garfield Played Frank in 'Doctor Who'

With Doctor Who's most recent Christmas Special, "Joy to the World," setting the stage for Season 2 of the newly minted Disney+ sci-fi series, all eyes turn to the 15th Doctor's (Ncuti Gatwa) next mission. When the series returns in 2025, The Doctor and his faithful companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) will undoubtedly deal with the prehistoric menace that rang in the new year with the Christmas Special. The real question is which young, upcoming actor will get their start on the hit British sci-fi series like Andrew Garfield did in 2007.

Indeed, before starring in his first feature film and well before donning the iconic Spidey suit, Andrew Garfield stole scenes from David Tennant in two episodes of Doctor Who. Despite giving a memorable turn, Garfield's career has soared so high,...

Doctor Who Showrunner Explains Why Tragic Companion Exits Are Common In The Modern Era
Image
Former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat breaks down why he feels the modern era of the sci-fi series has seen many of its companions face tragic but definitive endings. The writer first joined production on the television series with season 1 of the revival, and would take over from initial showrunner Russell T Davies in helming the show in 2010 until 2017. Moffat returned to writing for Doctor Who upon Davies returning to the role of showrunner, penning "Boom" for Doctor Who season 14 and the 2024 Christmas special "Joy to the World".

With another Moffat-penned Doctor Who adventure concluding with a bittersweet self-sacrifice from Nicola Coughlan's Joy, RadioTimes reports that the writer explained why so many companions face a tragic fate in the series. According to Moffat, he and Davies felt that they should offer a definitive reason to explain why anyone would decide to leave the Tardis:

In general terms, in the modern show we've always,...

10 Unpopular TV Romances That Eventually Won Fans Over
Image
TV show romance can be hard to pull off, as fans have polarizing opinions about what characters should end up together. However, it's always gratifying when an unexpected romance turns out to be a hit with fans, proving that the characters have a spark. Whether it's an enemies-to-lovers relationship or the two characters seem like polar opposites, the last thing any viewer thinks is that these people would get together and that the romance would be good for them. However, it's often the most unpredictable romance that turns out to be the most effective.

However, in some cases, audiences did see these relationships coming and opposed them from the beginning because they felt the characters didn't fit together. While some TV show couples never should have dated, these couples successfully proved audiences wrong by overcoming their differences and making amends for the ways they hurt each other in the past.

Doctor Who's Final 2024 Episode Continues A Sad Tradition That Started With David Tennant
Image
Doctor Who's "Joy to the World" belongs to a specific group of Christmas specials for an unfortunate reason, but the festive installment in 2025 can easily break away from the predictable trend. All the Doctor Who Christmas specials (and New Year specials under Chris Chibnall's reign) hold an interesting place in the show's timeline. Because they're one-off installments, they need to include high-paced action while also maintaining the spirit of the holidays. However, there's often a behind-the-scenes hurdle that needs to be overcome at the same time.

Although Doctor Who's classic era rarely acknowledged Christmas, the festival specials have been a big hallmark of the show since its 2005 revival. Doctor Who's modern era has taken the Doctor through several holiday tropes to varying degrees of success, but the person by his side can often be an unfamiliar face. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, it does...

Doctor Who Christmas Special's Ruby Cameo & Parallel To Another Iconic Companion's Exit Explained By Steven Moffat
Image
The following article contains spoilers for Doctor Who's "Joy to the World."

With Millie Gibson making a surprise appearance in Doctor Who's 2024 Christmas special, Steven Moffat and Russell T Davies break down what her cameo means in the Whoniverse. Ruby Sunday made her debut in the 2023 Christmas special as a child left abandoned on a church doorstep at Christmas hoping to discover who her true biological mother is. Despite traveling to the age of dinosaurs, Regency England, and distant space human colonies, Ruby parted ways with Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor in Doctor Who's season 14 finale.

While speaking with Screen Rant about Doctor Who's 2024 Christmas Special, Moffat broke down the surprise cameo by Ruby in the episode's final montage. While her appearance was not part of the earlier concepts, the writer revealed that he and Davies had extensive discussions about why the Time Lord would keep their distance.

10 Great "What If...?" Episodes Of Famous TV Shows
Image
A recent trend that has been appearing in many popular movies and TV shows is the idea of alternate universes; that is, different realities which contrast heavily with the established world thanks to at least one key change occurring somewhere in the past. Movies like Everything Everywhere All at Once and Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have dedicated themselves to diving deep into the idea, exploring numerous alternate realities that could have existed just as easily as the ones the characters live in.

However, while many major motion pictures have been entirely focused on this idea, there are also numerous TV shows that have diverged from their main narrative in order to consider alternate realities as well. After all, it can be very enjoyable for the creators and actors of the show to consider how different the lives of their characters could have been. While they all approach the subject in different ways,...

10 Times DC Villains Became Heroes On-Screen

DC has a long history of creating complex and multidimensional characters, and some of these villains have even found redemption and fought alongside the heroes. Captain Cold in the Arrowverse starts as a villain but eventually redeems himself and becomes a member of the Legends of Tomorrow team. The Suicide Squad are villains recruited to a mission for the goverment who end up choosing to do the right thing and save the world.

The DC Universe has introduced many iconic villains to the worlds of its heroes, and many of these have even helped fight greater threats. With some DC villains more effective in shows than movies and vice versa, there is an enormous library of exceptional characters performing horrible deeds. Doctor Who: 6 Biggest Comparisons Between Rogue & River Song
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Doctor Who, season 14, episode 6, "Rogue".

Rogue in Doctor Who draws comparisons to River Song due to their morally ambiguous pasts and complex relationships with the Doctor. Both Rogue and River Song have elements of their storylines that involve sacrificing themselves for the greater good. The romance between Rogue and the Doctor in Doctor Who hints at a potential future storyline for the show, similar to River Song's arc.

Jonathan Groff's new Doctor Who character, Rogue, bears similarities with Alex Kingston's iconic River Song. In Doctor Who season 14, episode 6, "Rogue", the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) teams up with the titular bounty hunter to foil a plot to take over British high society by a race of evil alien cosplayers. In the lead-up to "Rogue" being broadcast, it was speculated that Jonathan Groff's new Doctor Who character would be a replacement for John Barrowman's Captain Jack Harkness.

Doctor Who: ‘Rogue’
Image
Warning: Contains spoilers for ‘Rogue’

This first series of Doctor Who’s latest reboot has been a lot of things — silly (‘Space Babies’), spectacular (‘The Devil’s Chord’), intense (‘Boom’), scary (‘73 Yards’), and, by the end of last week’s Black Mirror aping ‘Dot And Bubble’, pretty damn bleak even too. But not since Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson’s first outing as the Doctor and Ruby Sunday, ‘The Church On Ruby Road’, have we had an episode as outrageously fun Regency-era romp ‘Rogue’. Poured from the pens of guest writers Kate Herron and Briony Redman, this week’s adventure is good old-fashioned monster-of-the-week Who with a deliciously queer twist.

Leaving Finetime well behind, ‘Rogue’ finds the Doctor and Ruby in early 19th-century Bath, enjoying a ball at the stately mansion home of the Duchess of Pemberton (a suitably hissable Indira Varma). All britches, bodices, “You cad!” admonishments, and anachronistic...

Doctor Who season 14, episode 6, breaks new ground with the Doctor's first true same-sex kiss in "Rogue." However, the Fifteenth Doctor's kiss scene in "Rogue" stands out for a unique reason.

10 Best Doctor Who Episodes By Steven Moffat
Image
Moffat's return to Doctor Who in "Boom" showcased emotional complexity, action, and a romance subplot. "Blink" was a standout Doctor-lite episode with a simple yet powerful monster in the Weeping Angels. "Heaven Sent" stood as Moffat's best episode, exploring themes of grief with the Doctor monologuing for centuries.

Following the release of Steven Moffats most recent Doctor Who episode, Boom, it was worth considering which of his episodes are the very best. Steven Moffat was one of Doctor Whos ex-showrunners and took charge during the eras of Matt Smiths Eleventh Doctor and Peter Capaldis Twelfth Doctor. Throughout Moffats time in control of the show, and even before, he crafted some of the greatest episodes of Doctor Who ever.

Whether it was an individual episode or a whole story arc, Moffat received praise for his intricate details, dedication to the Doctor Who lore, and overall engaging characters. Moffat also created some...

Doctor Who’s Surprise “Boom” Guest Star Calls Back to an Eleventh Doctor Era Twist
Image
This Doctor Who article contains spoilers.

Back in 2012, Doctor Who fans freaked out. We’d been told in advance that Clara (Jenna Coleman) would eventually replace Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill) as the next companion of the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) in series 7 of the show. But fans weren’t prepared for just how soon Coleman would make her Doctor Who debut. Although she wouldn’t officially join Matt Smith in the Tardis until a few episodes later, Coleman first appeared in the series 7 premiere “Asylum of the Daleks” as a seemingly different character named Oswin, who, although she met a tragic end, encouraged the Doctor to remember her.

And now, 12 years later, it looks like Who history is repeating itself. In the absolutely wonderful Steven Moffat-penned episode, “Boom,” the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) encounters a host of new allies, including a marine named Mundy. For fans of Star Wars: Andor,...

The Weirdest Moments in Legends of Tomorrow, Ranked
Image
Season 1 of DC's Legends of Tomorrow followed Time Master Rip Hunter, played by Arthur Darvill, attempting to stop the time-traveling despot, Vandal Savage, with the aid of fan-favorite characters from within the still-young Arrowverse, including Sara Lance, Ray Palmer, and Mick Rory. The show was decisively unpopular, receiving many harsh reviews, and so, in Season 2, it changed its premise entirely.

DC's Legends of Tomorrow may have started like other shows in the Arrowverse, but it quickly evolved into one of the weirdest shows on television. Rather than the grim and serious story of a traumatized Time Master that it started out as, the series became centered around a group of time-traveling losers doing their best to protect time while engaging in constant comedic antics, TV and movie parodies and pastiches, and musical numbers, and writing out most of its DC characters. These are the weirdest Legends of Tomorrow moments of all across its seven-season run.

7 Doctor Who Romance Storylines That Badly Backfired

Despite enjoying his time on Doctor Who, Arthur Darvill had one issue with Rory's lack of true presence in the narrative. Darvill believes that Rory's minor role actually helped his character arc and allowed him to prove himself as more than a third wheel. While other companions had spin-off shows dedicated to them, Rory's role was never particularly memorable, but this served to highlight Amy's growth throughout the series.

While one Doctor Who star enjoyed his time on the show, there is one problem he had with the Matt Smith era.
