Long Day’s Journey into Night Review: A Chamber Cinema Triumph
Image
Long Day’s Journey into Night unfolds within a single April day in 1912, as the Tyrone family convenes in their Connecticut seaside retreat. Morning light filters through lace curtains (ghostly in its delicacy), hinting at both renewal and decay. Jonathan Kent adapts Eugene O’Neill’s Pulitzer Prize–winning drama with minimal fanfare: David Lindsay-Abaire’s screenplay preserves the play’s structural integrity while allowing microexpressions to carry seismic emotional weight.

Cinematographer Mark Wolf frames each encounter with a stillness that feels almost surgical, positioning Mary (Jessica Lange), James (Ed Harris), Jamie (Ben Foster) and Edmund (Colin Morgan) in tableaux where silent glances speak volumes. Ilan Eshkeri’s sparse score—or absence thereof—amplifies ambient creaks and a distant foghorn, rendering the house a character itself.

Lange’s Mary drifts between lucid charm and opioid-tinted disorientation, while Harris’s James masks paternal regret beneath a veneer of theatrical pride. Foster’s...

‘Long Day’s Journey Into Night’ Review: A Haunting Foursome in a Web of Buried Secrets
Image
Jonathan Kent’s feature film adaptation of Long Day’s Journey Into Night begins, as the famous Eugene O’Neill play usually does, at breakfast. James Tyrone (Ed Harris) and his wife Mary (Jessica Lange) are enjoying some idle morning chitchat in their seaside Connecticut home, discussing trivial things like the foghorn that blared all through the previous night. They’re soon joined by their two sons, Jamie (Ben Foster) and Edmund (Colin Morgan), who quickly liven up the conversation by throwing a few gentle jibes at their father. “The joke is always at the old man’s expense,” James complains, perhaps only half-seriously.

The entirety of the film takes place at the Tyrone house, following these four characters over the course of a single day. At breakfast they seem the picture of a happy family, yet the camera keeps finding little signs that something isn’t right. Often it will...

Jessica Lange & Jonathan Kent On The Turbulent Road Of Bringing ‘Long Day’s Journey Into Night’ To The Big Screen: “Sometimes The Struggle Is Helpful” — Glasgow Film Festival
Image
Of all the characters Jessica Lange has played throughout her illustrious career, it’s Mary Tyrone, the restless, morphine-addicted mother of Eugene O’Neill’s play Long Day’s Journey Into Night, that has been her favorite.

“She’s the character that has touched me more deeply than any role that I’ve ever played,” says Lange. “You never get to the bottom of Mary Tyrone and I’ve played her hundreds of times on stage in London and New York. She’s written with such beauty and love and truth and intensity that you never complete her. I could keep on playing her for the rest of my life.”

After Lange completed her run on the 2016 Broadway revival of the play with prolific British theatre director Jonathan Kent, which won her a Tony Award, the pair were keen to immortalize the epic story as a feature film.

“It happened very organically,...

Jessica Lange Dismisses 'American Horror Story' Return
Image
The American Horror Story universe has been replete with chilling performances by some of the most talented actors in Hollywood. Among them is the remarkable Jessica Lange, who joined Ryan Murphy's AHS during its first season as Constance Langdon, a woman who lived next door to the subtitular Murder House. She then starred as Sister Jude in Asylum, Fiona Goode in Coven, and Elsa Mars in Freak Show. She reprised the role of Constance Langdon for 2018's Apocalypse, which marked her last time appearing in the horror anthology. Murphy's been teasing getting some of the show's most beloved stars back for its upcoming thirteenth season, but we can now count Lange out.

At the Glasgow Film Festival premiere of her latest movie, Long Day's Journey Into Night, Lange firmly dismissed the possibility of a return to AHS.

"Reacher" Season 3 is finally here, and with it, the towering Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) attains yet another colorful supporting cast. This time, the military police extraordinaire-turned-voluntary vagrant finds himself in Maine, where he rescues a strange young man (Johnny Berchtold) from a kidnapping attempt and ends up accidentally killing a plainclothes police officer as a result. Fortunately, the kid's father, Zachary Beck (Anthony Michael Hall), happens to be a wealthy big shot who's willing to help. Soon, Reacher finds himself semi-forcefully recruited into a strange group that seems to be doing something far shadier than its stated raison d'être of selling rugs ... or does he?

In reality, both the kidnapping and the cop's death were a ruse. Reacher and the people who set them up are in cahoots, with the protagonist working as an undercover agent for the hard-as-nails Susan Duffy. Both Reacher...

10 Bad Final TV Seasons That Would've Been Better With More Episodes
Image
There's nothing worse than starting a TV show, getting invested in the rich plot and characters, and having it ruined by a bad final season. Ranging from rushing through the plot to destroying a beloved character's growth in the final seasons, many TV shows fall into the trap of being ruined because of unsatisfying and terrible endings. Sudden cancellations of TV shows and cutting down on the length of the final season are often the culprits behind messy final seasons.

Given more time to flesh out character motivations and intricate plotlines, a lot of shows that suffered a lackluster final season could have been improved with a few more episodes. While the addition of episodes can't fix mischaracterization issues and terrible plot twists, they can potentially make the final season feel more coherent, maintain the storyline's quantity, and provide a meaningful resolution.

9 Best Fantasy TV Shows Made On A Low Budget
Image
There are loads of fantasy TV shows that audiences love for their stellar visual effects and high-quality production value, but there are also many other titles with a low budget that are just as great. The best fantasy TV shows of 2024 demonstrate just how much the genre has grown and changed, but these projects also highlight just how expensive they are to make. Fantasy is such a wide-ranged genre, and when wild and wacky creatures or magic are involved, a lot of behind-the-scenes work is needed.

Even the best animated fantasy TV shows ever are familiar with these struggles. Creating a particular chunk of animation, with all kinds of imagery and detailing, is a lengthy and costly process. However, money isnt everything, and making a good TV show is possible without breaking the bank. Fantasy stories are up to interpretation and rely on the imagination of others, especially for book adaptations,...

'You Never See That': Viggo Mortensen Explains What Makes The Dead Don't Hurt a Unique Western
Image
Viggo Mortensen was working from both sides of the camera for the new movie The Dead Don't Hurt, now playing in theaters. The actor, who directed the film in addition to starring, has spoken about what makes this film unique in the Western genre.

Mortensen addressed The Dead Don't Hurt in a new interview with Cbr's Kevin Polowy to promote the film. He commented on how hard the whole team had worked to make the film as historically accurate as possible while staying true to the Western movie genre. With that said, Mortensen noted how The Dead Don't Hurt is different from most other Western movies, in part because of Vicky Krieps' Vivienne serving as the central character.

The Dead Dont Hurt Ending, Explained
Image
Quick Links What Is The Dead Don't Hurt About? The Inciting Event in Vivienne's Life What Happens to Vivienne at the end of The Dead Don't Hurt?

Viggo Mortensen wrote, directed, produced, and starred in the throwback Western The Dead Don't Hurt, a passionate labor of love that paid off. Set in 19th-century San Francisco and Nevada, the story concerns Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps), a French Canadian settler adapting to life on the harsh American frontier during the Civil War. Vivienne meets and falls for Danish settler Holger Olsen (Mortensen) and the two begin life anew together.

Alas, when Olsen fights for the North in the Civil War, Vivienne faces an unspeakable horror that alters the course of her life. The Dead Don't Hurt has received positive reviews for Krieps' powerful performance, Mortensen's deft ability to flip genre conventions, and for pulling no punches in its brutal depiction of America's westward expansion.

The Dead Don’t Hurt review | Peter Bradshaw's film of the week
Viggo Mortensen
The star directs, writes, composes and acts in this beautifully shot and sombre film about an old-school hero in a 19th-century frontier community fraught with tragedy

This sinewy, sombre, handsomely crafted and beautifully shot western is Viggo Mortensen’s second feature as a director, an impressively authored movie in which Mortensen is also writer, composer and star. With almost anyone else that might be the recipe for narcissism, and yet the self-effacing and even reticent quality in Mortensen’s screen presence works against that danger. He is, however, certainly working within the traditional strong, silent template of the old-school western hero.

Holger Olsen (played by Mortensen) is a Danish immigrant to the United States of the 1860s, who finds himself in San Francisco – a carpenter, rough-hewn outdoorsman and military veteran. He finds himself meeting the frank, unabashed gaze of Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps) a French-Canadian woman of modest means but independent temperament,...

The Dead Don’t Hurt Review: Viggo Mortensen’s Self-Consciously Political Western
Image
As revisionist westerns go, Viggo Mortensen’s The Dead Don’t Hurt is more contemplative than most. The film has its share of violence, brutality, and injustice, but its protagonists respond stoically to life’s misfortunes, where lust for revenge animates other heroes of the genre. And with a clearly defined focus on the lives of women and immigrants against the backdrop of the Civil War, Mortensen develops thematic material introduced in his directorial debut, 2020’s Falling, which pitted a relentlessly bigoted patriarch against his gay son.

The Dead Don’t Hurt also employs a fragmented timeline like the earlier film. In Falling, frequent flashbacks effectively rendered the confusion of the film’s dementia-suffering father. In The Dead Don’t Hurt, Mortensen has dialed back the aggressive cross-cutting in favor of a more straightforward editorial grammar. But the non-linear construction here serves both to generate dramatic irony and to ensure that the story...

Merlins Best Character Is Also Its Most Tragic
Image
BBC's Merlin may have been concluded for over a decade, but the series still has much to offer. Focusing on Merlin (Colin Morgan), a young man hiding his magical abilities while working for Prince Arthur (Bradley James), the show is an origin story for the legendary characters. As Merlin helps Arthur become a just king and fulfill his destiny, the show introduces many names that should be familiar, from Gwen (Angel Coulby) to Uther (Anthony Head). But one is almost unrecognizable at the beginning. In Merlin, Morgana (Katie McGrath) is introduced as Uther's kind-hearted and fierce ward rather than the wicked enchantress she is based on. Morgana serves as an initial shock to the audience, proving that this wouldn't be like the other retellings and her progression continues to do that throughout the series.

Good Omens Fans Need to See Peter Serafinowicz as Crowley in Art from Original 2014 Adaptation
Image
Fans of the recent TV adaptation of Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman's Good Omens need to see Sean Phillips' art for the 2014 BBC Radio 4 adaptation of the beloved novel. The art shows the radio play's cast in their roles, painting a totally different picture of these beloved characters than fans know from the Amazon adaptation, where David Tennant & Michael Sheen play Crowley and Aziraphale. With a new graphic novel adaptation on the way, Phillips' art sets a high bar.

Shared on The Art of Sean Phillips blog, the art shows various actors in the guises of their characters. In the most surprising difference for fans of the Amazon show, Peter Serafinowicz - who has starred as everything from John Wick's Sommelier to a member of the McU's Nova Corps to the voice of Star Wars' Darth Maul - is the demonic Crowley, and Mark Heap is his angelic ally Aziraphale.

‘The Dead Don’t Hurt’ Review: Viggo Mortensen Stars, Writes, Directs, Produces & Composes Music For Uniquely Fine Western, But Vicky Krieps Is Its Soul – Toronto Film Festival
Image
The western genre has been so pervasive throughout the entire history of the movies, and it is hard to imagine doing anything in it that hasn’t already been done. Viggo Mortensen, in writing, directing, producing and co-starring in only his second film behind the camera (after 2020’s Falling) finds a moving, if tragic, love story to play against the stunning landscape of the circa-1860s West, and somehow it all feels new. John Ford and Howard Hawks would love this movie.

The Dead Don’t Hurt is a title that promises something else, but without giving away spoilers, it ultimately feels right for this story of Holder Olsen (Mortensen), a Danish immigrant who falls hard for Vivienne Le Coudy (a luminous Vicky Krieps), who he meets in San Francisco. Wanting some quiet peace in his life, they move together to Elk Flats, Nevada, and start what appears to be an idyllic life together.
