Underscore Talent has added several notable names to its roster. The talent management firm, launched in 2021 by the former co-founders of digital network Studio71, has joined forces with creators like Noah Beck and The Herbert Family by bringing on Maxwell Mitcheson as a Partner.
Mitcheson, who is bringing talent manager Mallory Llewellyn to Underscore with him, is the former Head of Creator Management at TalentX Entertainment. TalentX made a name for itself by working alongside the Sway LA creator house, which served as a residence for Beck and other social stars.
Mitcheson arrived at TalentX in 2020 after previously working for bicoastal talent agency A3 Artists. Esports firm ReKTGlobal acquired TalentX in 2021.
By bringing Mitcheson and Llewellyn into its ranks, Underscore will build on a roster that already includes more than 200 creators. Talent managed by the pair includes Beck, The Herbert Family, Instagram beauty guru Foinika Kay of ExteriorGlam, and makeup influencer Mireya Rios.

Underscore Talent is betting big on Web3. The management company, launched in 2021 by Studio71 Co-Founders Dan Weinstein and Reza Izad, has announced a division called Underscore Labs. Through its new wing, Underscore will utilize a three-pronged approach to assemble a roster of blockchain-based intellectual property.
To head its Web3 Lab, Underscore has hired Brandon Eng, the Co-Founder of Purebase Studio. Eng’s venture, which has launched Nft collections like Lucky Zeros and Minisupers, will be woven into Underscore Labs. “Reza and Dan are at the forefront of digital and media,” Eng said in a statement, “and I am thrilled to partner with them to launch this new venture at the horizon of the next digital frontier.”
Underscore Labs will connect Web3 IP to “top creative talent in media.” Nft projects have evolved into entertainment properties, as evidenced by a recent music video that stars several members of the Bored Ape Yacht Club.

"Not Okay," the new film by writer/director Quinn Shephard starring Zoey Deutch, is a satire of influencers and the terminally online. So it makes sense that they got one of the internet's most controversial influencers to make a cameo in the movie: Caroline Calloway. How did the duo make the shocking appearance happen?
"I think I DMed her and asked her," Shephard tells Popsugar. "I think we also sent a script through her agent, and then we drank a lot of rosé together. I found out that she was down to do it through an Instagram story that she posted."
"Zoey and I were going through a number of attempted recruitments of different cameos for that scene," she explains, but Calloway was "down to make fun of herself." "It was a challenge to find people, [who] not only were down to make fun of themselves, but also their entire team...

With its latest hire, Underscore Talent is appealing to group of creators who love to get out of the house. The talent management company established by the co-founders of the Studio 71 network has brought on Abe Santos, the former Head of Partner Engagement at YouTube, to lead a new division dedicated to outdoorsy creators.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Santos joined Underscore in July. The former law enforcement officer will manage creators who fall into the “outdoor” category, which covers extreme sports, fishing, and cars, among other topics. Santos will help his charges launch podcasts, establish businesses, and claim opportunities that have not previously been afforded to many outdoor creators. “By bringing Abe into the company, we will be able to provide representation for what has been to date an underserved creator group,” said Underscore Talent Co-Founder Reza Izad in a statement.

A 17-month-old talent management firm has made some major additions to its roster.
Underscore Talent, which already works with top digital creators like CelinaSpookyBoo, Vlad & Niki, and Code Miko, has signed four more prominent videomakers: Beauty star Tati Westbrook, gamer Justaminx, and TikTokers Jeenie Weenie and the Splash Twinz.
Underscore was formed in January 2021 out of a partnership between Reza Izad, Dan Weinstein, and Michael Green. The three execs previously served as three of the co-founders of the digital network Studio71. Though much of Underscore's focus has been on family-oriented creators (it even hired a former Mattel exec as a talent manager last year), its new signees reach a wide range of audiences. In a press release, Underscore noted that Westbrook, who has 12.5 million followers across her social media platforms, is "one of the world’s most-watched beauty reviewers on YouTube by women ages 18-44, with more than 1.5 billion views.

Jackie Aina grew up in L.A.’s San Gabriel Valley, which she’s previously described as “kind of a hood and kind of suburban.” But that was her experience growing up in La Puente, a relatively poor community just south of West Covina, where Aina was raised in a three-bedroom, one bathroom house she shared with eight family members. Tati Westbrook and her husband, James, are the subject of a lawsuit by an ex-business partner -- the entrepreneur Clark Swanson -- who is alleging breach of contract, gross negligence, and fraudulent inducement.
The lawsuit is in regards to Westbrook’s Halo Beauty vitamin brand, which Swanson says he initially co-owned with the Westbrooks, with both parties agreeing to take a 50% stake in the venture. However, prior to its official launch, Swanson alleges that the Westbrooks asked for a two-thirds stake in Halo, with the caveat that they would use Halo as an umbrella brand for not only vitamins but a whole host of other beauty launches in realms like cosmetics, skin care, and fragrances -- to which Swanson agreed, E! reports.

In an explosive forty-minute video -- marking her return to YouTube after a two-month absence -- beauty vlogger Tati Westbrook is shedding new light on her now-infamous feud with James Charles, which ignited the beauty community last year, and saw Charles lose millions of subscribers while dealing a substantial blow to his reputation.
Last May, in a video titled Bye Sister, Westbrook accused Charles of being a disloyal friend with an outsized ego, and for attempting to use his fame to seduce straight men.. Today, however, Westbrook alleges that Shane Dawson and Jeffree Star “used, coerced, and manipulated” her into making the Bye Sister video because they wanted to destroy Charles’ career.
Dawson, for his part, denied allegations that he orchestrated the Bye Sister video in a since-deleted memo posted to Twitter last week, where he announced his departure from YouTube's beauty community, explaining that the drama had become too much to bear.

YouTube star and beauty influencer James Charles is launching a “Project Runway”-style reality competition show — in which he’ll pick one up-and-coming makeup artist as the winner of a $50,000 cash prize.
The show, which has the working title “James Charles Instant Influencer,” is slated to debut in the spring of 2020 on Charles’ YouTube channel with episodes to be released weekly. Charles will host, direct and executive produce the series.
YouTube is funding the four-part series as part of its revamped originals strategy, focusing less on scripted fare and more on personality-driven, music and learning content, with all original programming being made available on the free, ad-supported service.

Shane Dawson and Jeffree Star aren’t the only YouTube creators who have a blockbuster makeup launch on their hands.
Beauty Og Tati Westbrook, whose profile (and subscribership) skyrocketed in the wake of her friendship dissolution with James Charles earlier this year, has provided a window into the massive success of her first color launch — an eyeshadow palette dubbed Textured Neutrals Vol. 1 — while teasing that more products from her Tati Beauty brand are right around the corner..
While Star and Dawson said they sold more than 1 million palettes in 30 minutes, and are currently readying a restock strategy after crashing Shopify, Tati also sold out of her initial launch — to the tune of 100,000 palettes (priced at $48 apiece) within 12 hours, for a total of $4.8 million in sales. While the initial run sold out quickly, Westbrook shared that customers could still tender preorders for the second printing of the palette, which are slated to be delivered in December.

Former image consultant Tati Westbrook became an international sensation when she created her YouTube beauty and lifestyle channel GlamLifeGuru (later to be re-christened Tati) in November 2010. Since then, she’s gone from strength to strength, reaching over 9 million subscribers on her channel and branching out into her own range of cosmetics and vitamin supplements. As expected, there have been some controversies along the way (more on which coming up), but with her new beauty line, Tail Beauty, fresh on the shelves and generating huge media excitement,

What's really going on between Jeffree Star and Tati Westbrook? Social media is in a frenzy over a possible feud between the YouTube sensations. According to fans online, Jeffree appears to have unfollowed Tati on Instagram, sparking the feud rumors. As for the cause of this possible feud, it seems as though it might be all about business. As fans of the YouTubers will know, Tati released her very first makeup collection, Tati Beauty, this past Friday, Oct. 25. "I feel really happy. It's about time," Tati recently told E! After nine years and nearly 2,000 YouTube videos, Tati Westbrook is finally releasing her own makeup collection. Come Oct. 25, the cosmetic guru's nearly 10 million subscribers will get to experience Tati Beauty for the very first time. In an exclusive interview with E! News, she says it's a moment that she and her followers have been eagerly anticipating for years—and that's no exaggeration. Last year's announcement of Tati's nutraceuticals company, Halo Beauty, was met with backlash by even her most loyal of fans. It’s looking a lot like palette season here on YouTube.
As holiday shopping is about to kick into full swing, several of the beauty community’s most popular -- and polarizing -- creators are slated to launch makeup palettes for their respective brands. The latest entry into the space is Tati Westbrook (9.2 million subscribers), a YouTube veteran who exploded into the zeitgeist after she publicly distanced herself from former mentee James Charles -- who also recently re-released a palette of his own (more on that later).
In March 2018, Westbrok launched a somewhat unconventional beauty brand, Halo, comprising hair, skin, and nail vitamins -- not only a scientifically nebulous proposition but also a far less marketable one compared to traditional color items. Now, however, in a clever teaser video uploaded to her channel earlier this week (below), Westbrook is taking a more mainstream approach with the launch of Tati Beauty...

Time magazine has unveiled today its fifth annual round-up of the 25 Most Influential People on the Internet -- and, unsurprisingly, it’s chock full of YouTube stars.
This year’s list, which Time says it ascertained by looking at global social media impact as well as the “overall ability to drive news,” includes Liza Koshy, James Charles, Germán Garmendia, Jojo Siwa, Benjamin 'DrLupo' Lupo, and Emma Chamberlain.
The storied publisher applauded Koshy for hosting Vogue’s Met Gala red carpet and her upcoming role in an Alicia Keys-produced film, while it acknowledged that Charles has had a tumultuous year but was bouncing back after the uproarious dissolution of his friendship with former mentor Tati Westbrook. Time notes that Garmendia, who is the world’s most popular Spanish-language YouTuber, released his debut novel last year, and reports that the hair bows that Siwa has made famous became so popular across...

Exactly one month -- to the day -- after James Charles announced a YouTube hiatus, the 20-year-old has returned to his channel with a Pride-themed makeup tutorial.
Charles embarked on his hiatus after an explosive friendship dissolution with fellow prominent beauty vloggers Tati Westbrook and Jeffree Star, amid accusations of fair-weather friendship and sexual misconduct. Charles fiercely denied the latter accusation. At the time, Charles said he was stepping away from YouTube after experiencing suicidal thoughts and following criticism that he had developed an oversized ego -- a legitimate critique, he acknowledged.
That said, Charles never fully left social media, keeping his Instagram Stories and Snapchat updated regularly, and readying other projects on the back burner.

Jonas Mekas, Lost Lost Lost (1976)Today the terrain of self-presentation is built upon digitally mediated hypervisibility. At any given moment, you are (or should) strive to be noticed and recognized, whether on your Instagram or your secret Instagram, on your Stan Twitter account or your YouTube channel. We could think of social media as a democracy that enables self-expression, but there is an artistic process through which the voices of the masses are altered. The most popular of these curated individual brands present themselves to the public through video blogging. But considering the films of Sadie Benning, Naomi Kawase, Jonas Mekas, and so on, vlogging is a continuation of a filmmaking tradition. And just as a film festival or an art gallery screening a work by Mekas or Benning might profit from ticket sales and marketing campaigns, the vlog is entangled in the embrace of art and economy. Within these online spaces,...

Beauty vlogger James Charles has cancelled his Sisters Tour following weeks of controversy.
Charles, who averages more than 125 million views per month, recently lost millions of subscribers (and his product partner Killer Merch) after fellow vlogger Tati Westbrook -- his former mentor and once-close friend -- uploaded a now-unlisted 43-minute YouTube video detailing significant career help she’d given him for seemingly little reciprocation. She also accused Charles of trying to pressure men into relationships with him.
The pair, as well as fellow beauty guru and Killer Merch owner Jeffree Star, apparently reached a detente last week. Charles’ YouTube subscriber count, which was at 16.6 million before Westbrook’s video, sank to 13.4 million amidst the row. It’s now back up to 15.3 million.

James Charles will not be going on tour after all in wake of his drama with Tati Westbrook. Over the past few weeks, the 20-year-old has been feuding with the fellow YouTube beauty vlogger and Instagram influencer. She and Charles, her former protégé, have exchanged several long YouTube videos detailing their frustrations with each other and the drama has also had a financial impact; Charles has lost nearly three million YouTube subscribers, while Westbrook has gained about five million. And the fallout continues for Charles. "As many of you guys know, a few weeks ago, we announced the official first-ever Sisters Tour, which is a 24-city tour all around at the United States of America...

After long teasing the creation of a proprietary makeup brand -- and being credited with launching blockbuster product collabs with Becca and Morphe, paving the way for other players in the space -- Jaclyn Hill is launching Jacyln Hill Cosmetics later this month.
Thus far, Hill has been somewhat mum on the project, save for the launch of a dedicated website and Instagram page containing a few teaser videos featuring a diamond motif -- including Hill swinging on a giant diamond. The tagline for the brand is ‘So Rich. So Buttery. So Good.’ Hill also confirmed on Twitter that her first product from the line will be a lipstick -- which also appears to tout diamond-inspired packaging.
Hill, 28, counts 6 million subscribers and has been making YouTube videos since 2011. Despite proving herself as a massive retail draw, she resides in Florida and largely avoids the high drama of the Los Angeles-based...

A lot can happen in a week. Just ask Tati Westbrook. A little over a week ago, it was very likely that, unless you're a member of Gen Z and spend your free time perusing make-up tutorials and beauty product reviews on YouTube, you'd never even heard the influencer's name. And then, following a week that saw the arrival of both a royal baby and the latest Kimye baby, not to mention the Met Gala, she became all anybody seemed to want to talk about thanks to the feud she ignited with another YouTuber, the endlessly problematic James Charles. With a 40+ minute video entitled "Bye Sister," Westbrook took aim at her former protege, laying bare the myriad reasons she'd chosen to end her...

YouTube’s scandal-plagued beauty community appears to have reached a detente over the weekend, after vloggers James Charles and Jeffree Star weighed in on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, with their thoughts about last week’s firestorm.
In the past, friendship breakdowns in the beauty sphere have spawned effusive apologies from those perceived by audiences to be in the wrong -- such as Laura Lee’s infamous apology video and Manny 'Mua' Gutierrez’s scrapped docuseries in the wake of their fallout with Star last year. But 19-year-old Charles took an entirely different tact when his back was against the wall, firmly refuting allegations waged by former mentor Tati Westbrook and Star that he had been a disloyal friend and pressured straight men into sexual relationships (Charles is gay) by using money and fame.
Charles’ approach appears to have worked wonders thus far, illuminating that it is not necessarily vague and...

Tati Westbrook wants to close the chapter in her life regarding her ongoing feud with James Charles. On Sunday, the Halo Beauty owner posted a long note on Twitter about the events that have transpired over the past few days and how her breakup with James has led to too much "toxicity and chaos." "I have been in contact with James Charles through an intermediary over the last week, and we believe that it is the best interest of our community, our viewers and our own mental health to put this matter to a rest," she began. She continued, "For that reason, I will not be making any further public comments and I hope and pray that no one else will make anymore hurtful statements on my behalf....

Since then, YouTube stars and YouTube fans have vocally taken sides in the Tati-James debate and he's lost millions upon millions of subscribers and followers.
