If you’ve seen the 2012 film adaptation of Les Miserables, you’ve experienced Anne Hathaway’s short but stellar performance.
Based on the 1862 French novel by Victor Hugo, the musical, known by many simply as Les Mis, is set in early nineteenth-century France during the June Rebellion, a time of unrest in the country. Anne Hathaway has little screen time, but her character is significant in the film’s storyline.

Hathaway portrays the character of Fantine, an unwed mother forced into prostitution to support her young daughter, Cosette. The complicated and emotional role took a toll on Hathaway, who underwent physical and mental changes to portray the character as accurately as possible.

Exclusive: King Charles III heaped royal praise on Andrew Lloyd Webber when he first heard the composer play a piano version of the coronation anthem, telling the peer that the music gave him “goosebumps and tears.”
The anthem, titled Make A Joyful Noise, was just performed in all its glory during today’s Coronation service at Westminster Abbey, as it was broadcasted and streamed to millions around the world.
Lloyd Webber revealed the King’s thoughts to us after he’d given a hush-hush preview of the anthem’s recording. He added he felt “humbled and moved” by the monarch’s “kind words.”
The musical theatre giant was specially commissioned to compose the anthem for their majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla. “I mean, he could have said that he hated it and I would have had to have started it all over again,” Lloyd Webber joked.

To Taylor Swift, Guillermo del Toro is the real “Mastermind.”
The multi-hyphenate Grammy darling raved about the “Shape of Water” Oscar-winning filmmaker during The Hollywood Reporter’s 2022 Women in Entertainment Power 100 Q&a, revealing she would want to trade places with del Toro for a day.
“Imagine having that imagination, that visual vocabulary and that astonishing body of work,” Swift said. “To have such a diverse storytelling range but somehow put your distinctive artistic fingerprint on every film.”
The “Cats” actress most recently appeared in David O. Russell’s “Amsterdam,” while del Toro’s stop-motion reimagining of “Pinocchio” is now streaming on Netflix. Swift also made her directorial debut this year with the Oscar-qualifying short film “All Too Well.”
Swift’s latest album “Midnights” took inspiration from shows like “Mad Men,” with actress-singer Zoë Kravitz co-writing two tracks. The “Red” crooner admitted earlier this year that she botched her audition...

After a film has come out, it's always nice to look at how the performers got their roles. You often hear about actors who don't actually have to audition for the part, but when they do, it tends to be a fun story. Eddie Redmayne recently broke down his career in a new video for Vanity Fair, and spoke about the role of Marius in Tom Hooper's film adaptation of the musical "Les Misérables." Redmayne did not get invited to do the role, it seems. He had to send in an audition tape like everyone else.
Redmayne said that everyone in Hollywood wanted to be a part of "Les Misérables," and that "half of Hollywood came running out of the musical theater closet to express their undying love for that piece." He was really excited about doing the film and very desperate to be a part of the whole thing.

Taylor Swift realized she would’ve, could’ve, should’ve talked to Eddie Redmayne during her botched audition for the 2012 film “Les Misérables.”
Swift auditioned for the Oscar-winning feature, directed by Tom Hooper, in both roles that centered on the love triangle with Marius, played by Eddie Redmayne.
“Basically I was up for two roles,” Swift said during “The Graham Norton Show” opposite Redmayne (via Entertainment Weekly). “I had the look of Cosette and the range vocally of Éponine, so it was established I was there for a good time but not for a long time. I wasn’t going to get the role.”
Redmayne’s Marius falls in love with Cosette, while Éponine pines for him. Redmayne was already cast in the role when Swift auditioned, as the “Midnights” singer said that the Academy Award winner is one of her “favorite” actors.

Government ‘formal guidance’ for the period of mourning was sent by the UK Cinema Associationto its members yesterday shortly before the Queen’s death was confirmed. The guidance states there is “no expectation” for businesses – including cinemas – to close unless they wish to.

Director Nick Winston’s film adaptation of his own stage musical about a marriage breakdown fails to strike a memorable chord
The road from stage to screen can be a rocky path: a musical should not, for instance, unfold as a string of music videos but establish a coherent visual language. It’s this that is lacking in Nick Winston’s reworking of his own stage production of the same title.
Tomorrow Morning follows married couple Jack (Ramin Karimloo) and Catherine (Samantha Barks) through two distinct phases of their relationship; it juxtaposes the idealistic adoration felt before their wedding day with the animosity that comes a decade later when the pair quarrel over divorce settlements and property rights. This stark contrast is intended to reflect the ebb and flow of domestic partnerships as well as the individual evolution that occurs between young adulthood and middle age. Once an aspiring novelist,...

Starring opposite Samantha Barks in Nick Winston’s Tomorrow Morning, screenplay by Laurence Mark Wythe and in Isaac Hirotsu Woofter’s Bound.
Ramin Karimloo with Anne-Katrin Titze: “When Michael offered me Nicky Arnstein in 2019, I had just finished singing with Barbra Streisand in London in Hyde Park.”
Ramin told me that Marlon Brando’s performance with Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather, Antonio Banderas in Arne Glimcher’s The Mambo Kings, and Kathy Bates in anything mean a great deal to him.

Do you wanna build a snowman see an epic selfie? Kristen Bell, who played Anna in Frozen and Frozen II, and Patti Murin, who portrayed the same character in the original cast of the Broadway production of the Disney sensation, finally met at the New York Pops 39th Birthday Gala at New York's Carnegie Hall on April 25. Of course, the major moment had to be documented with a pic—and we just can't let it go. "For the first time in forever…two Annas meet at last!" Murin captioned the snapshot." #Frozen." Bell opened the concert with a performance of "For the First Time in Forever" with Samantha Barks, who plays Elsa (portrayed by Idina...

In season one, Viscount Bridgerton was less hero than impediment. The eldest Bridgerton son, he assumed responsibility for the matches of his younger siblings Daphne and Colin, and spent the season throwing his weight around – sometimes literally in the case of the punch-up and dual with Daphne’s suitor Simon. Anthony attempted to control everybody else’s marriage responsibilities while refusing to face up to his own. His mistress Siena Rosso eventually made the decision for him, recognising that an opera singer with her past would never be found respectable enough to become a society Viscountess. Siena moved on, and urged Anthony to do the same.
In season two, Anthony’s search for a wife is centre-stage, making actor Jonathan the romantic lead. It’s not the first time the actor has told a love story in his established stage and screen career, which started in his childhood with the Royal Shakespeare Company,...

For “Mank” star Amanda Seyfried, she keeps her phone on silent and turns off all her notifications, so when she received an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress as Marion Davies in the David Fincher film, her publicist called her mother and woke her up with the good news.
“It’s nice to talk about something you care about and you’re proud of,” Seyfried tells Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast. “And it’s a person that existed, and we got to re reshape her legacy.” Listen below!
In this week’s episode, Seyfried talks about working with David Fincher on his old Hollywood examination of one of the greatest films ever made, “Citizen Kane.” She also exclusively shares with Variety that she has sent in her recording of “Popular” from the hit musical “Wicked,” which is being helmed by Universal Pictures and “In the Heights” director Jon M. Chu.

Taylor Swift was almost cast in Les Misérables — but she didn’t land the role of Éponine for what director Tom Hooper says is a very “flattering” reason.
Hooper, who would eventually go on to direct the singer in Cats, revealed in a recent interview with Vulture that while he came close to casting Swift in the 2012 movie, he ultimately didn’t believe Swift fit the character of an impoverished girl who gets overlooked.
“She had auditioned for Les Mis. She rather brilliantly auditioned for Éponine. I didn’t cast her, but I got very close to it,” Hooper, 47, told Vulture.

Taylor Swift attended “cat school” to learn what Jellicles can and Jellicles do. To prepare for “Cats,” the big-screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1981 musical, Swift and her co-stars enrolled in classes to master the movements of their four-legged characters. In the film, Swift plays Bombalurina, a rabble-rousing outsider who sprinkles catnip over the Jellicle ball.
Swift didn’t phone (or meow) in her performance in “Cats,” starring Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Jason Derulo, Ian McKellen and Judi Dench. She wanted to be ready for her big number, “Macavity,” and in case Lloyd Webber enlisted her to write a new song for the movie. When he did, their collaboration was fast and easy, in the form of “Beautiful Ghosts,” a confessional ballad performed by the stray cat Victoria (Francesca Hayward) that serves as a bookend to “Memory,” the production’s signature song (belted out by Hudson).

“I’ve kind of found this perfect balance” says Orfeh in regards to adapting roles from beloved films. The actress currently stars as Kit De Luca in “Pretty Woman: The Musical,” and has previously tackled film-to-stage adaptations like “Footloose,” “Saturday Night Fever,” and her Tony nominated turn as Paulette in “Legally Blonde.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
That balance she says, involves blending her own signature style with aspects from the film that have become iconic. In this way she satisfies both Broadway diehards and the movie audiences who buy tickets based on the title alone. She refers to the audience as “the next character” in the show. In the rehearsal room, actors are performing for the creative team or producers. “They’re not going to give the reactions that a paying audience member is going to give” she says. Joe Mantello’s recent Broadway staging of Mart Crowley’s The Boys in the Band will be eligible for a 2019 Tony Award – no surprise there – but theater trivia buffs might quibble with the category: Best Revival of a Play.
Although the gay groundbreaker has been staged many times since its Off Broadway debut in 1968, The Boys in the Band had never made its way to Broadway until Mantello’s star-packed production last April. So revival, or new play?
Revival, says the Tony Awards Administration Committee.
The decision was one of six announced today. Although the committee does not publicly explain its decisions, Boys’ 50-year production history – Broadway notwithstanding – apparently persuaded the committee toward the revival designation.
The designation was made during the first of four scheduled meetings planned by the committee for the 2018-2019 Broadway season. Other determinations made today:

There is a parallel universe in which Miley Cyrus was cast as Éponine in the 2012 feature film adaptation of “Les Misérables.” And this universe isn’t far off, either. In fact, the former “Hannah Montana” star actually auditioned for the role via a good old-fashioned self-tape—which you can watch right here. In the just-resurfaced video, Cyrus takes on the anthemic “On My Own,” singing the ballad completely acapella. The part, of course, did not ultimately end up in Cyrus’ hands, but instead went to then-newcomer Samantha Barks, who is currently starring as Vivian in the musical adaptation of “Pretty Woman” on Broadway. And Cyrus, as you may know, is doing just fine. All’s well that ends well in post-revolutionary France, right? Inspired to audition yourself? Check out Backstage's casting calls!

Samantha Barks didn’t watch Julia Roberts and Richard Gere’s iconic “Pretty Woman” in preparation for her starring role in the new Broadway musical adaptation of the 1990 film.
“It’s so hard to watch it because it’s such a beautiful, iconic performance,” Barks, who plays Vivian Ward, the hooker with a heart of gold, told Variety on Thursday at the musical’s opening night. “You can’t do your own thing for a minute and breathe. We’re lucky we have so many songs to sing, which adds new layers to the character.”
Though Roberts didn’t attend opening night at the Nederlander Theatre, she came to a performance while the show was running previews. The part of Vivian Ward launched Roberts into superstardom, so naturally, Barks said it was “petrifying” performing for her.

Prostitutes, once a staple of the Broadway musical, have been keeping a low profile in recent years. The old fantasy of sleeping with guys and making good money yielded long ago to real horror stories of exploitation, sexism, drug addiction and human trafficking. None of which has stopped Garry Marshall and J. F. Lawton from turning their hit 1990 movie “Pretty Woman” into a Broadway musical, which opened Thursday at the Nederlander Theatre.
Marshall directed the movie and Lawton wrote the screenplay, and they’re credited this time around as writers of the book, which means “Pretty Woman” the musical is a too-faithful adaptation of the original.
They have made one small but important update. The heroine’s seamy occupation is acknowledged at the get-go by turning her first song into a heartfelt lament, “Anywhere but Here,” effectively delivered in country style by a strong-voiced Samantha Barks.

I might not be the target audience for Pretty Woman – The Musical, seeing as how I was never a fan of Pretty Woman – The Movie. Just never thought it was cute, funny or charming when Richard Gere, in that 1990 star-making movie, jokingly snapped shut that proffered jewelry box, drawing the startled, wide-mouthed guffaw that transformed Julia Roberts into Julia Roberts.
And that was 10 years before the Millennium, well before the Laugh became schtick, and well well before #MeToo and Time’s Up did in – to anyone who was listening – the romanticization of sexual commodification in Hollywood.
Follow-your-dream American Idol platitudes and ’90s nostalgia don’t come close to explaining how or why Pretty Woman made its Cinderella trip from rom-com guilty pleasure to cloying, regressive Broadway musical. Bland Mor songs, costumes mistaking gaudy for glitzy and a sugary lead performance add up to one very smudged, very ill-fitting glass slipper.
