While Alison, Hannah, Spencer, Aria, and Emily may have been the protagonists of Pretty Little Liars, they had plenty of supporting characters like Jason Dilaurentis, who added to the drama and mystery of The CW show. Jason was Alison's elder brother who returned to Rosewood after the investigation into her disappearance started revealing parts of the truth about what happened to her. Pretty Little Liars was based on the novel series of the same name by Sara Shepard, which revolved around young and mysterious Alison Dilaurentis, who went missing one summer and was presumed dead. On the day of her funeral, Alison's closest friends started receiving threatening messages from someone named "A," who stalked and harassed them incessantly.

Recasting a character in a TV show can have significant effects on the trajectory of the series. Creative differences or a lack of audience connection can prompt the need for a recast. Recasting can inject new life into a series and allow showrunners to align characters with their creative vision.
Casting is a crucial aspect in creating a TV show, as an actor's ability to bring a character to life can significantly impact the success of the series. Occasionally, creative differences or a lack of audience connection may prompt the need to recast a character after the show has begun. Introducing a new actor to portray a character audiences have already started to know can have intriguing effects on the show's trajectory, for better or worse. When a series first begins, the cast and crew are still finding their footing.

Parker Bagley was initially cast as Jason Dilaurentis in Pretty Little Liars season 1 before being replaced by Drew Van Acker in season 2. The recasting was necessary due to the increased demands of the role as Jason's presence in the show grew in season 2. Bagley's career declined after leaving Pretty Little Liars, with his last acting credit in 2011 and legal troubles in 2013.
Drew Van Acker is known as the Jason Dilaurentis actor in Pretty Little Liars, but he wasn't the first actor cast in the role. Parker Bagley was initially cast as Jason, appearing in Pretty Little Liars season 1 before Van Acker took over. Created by I. Marlene King and inspired by the books by Sara Shepard, the series centers on the disappearance of Alison Dilaurentis (Sasha Pieterse) and the fallout that ensues among her group of friends when they start to be harassed by a Pretty Little Liars' villain "A.

Director: Joseph Kahn. Writers: Joseph Kahn and Mark Palermo. Cast: Josh Hutcherson, Dane Cook, Spencer Locke, Parker Bagley, Brooke Haven, Walter Perez, Aaron Perilo, Will Wallace, Jesse Heiman, Lindsey Morgan, and Marque Richardson. Detention is only director Joseph Kahn's second film. But, already this filmmaker is showing brilliance in this comedy slash serial killer feature. Kahn's background includes the 2004 action film Torque and a series of music videos. He brings the quick cuts and visual style of music videos to this feature. He also brings many, many pop culture references to what is the funniest film this reviewer has seen so far this year. And kudos to Kahn for creating such a complex storyline that is literally chock full of subplots. The central storyline focuses on Riley (Shanley Caswell) and her crush on Clapton Davis (Josh Hutcherson). She has to compete with Ione (Spencer Locke) for his attentions. And,...

Chicago – Don’t be duped by Joseph Kahn’s insultingly unintelligent trailer for his new Adhd high school slasher/comedy “Detention”. Rather than prematurely blowing his load with the film’s crème de la crème in a two-minute trailer, he’s done the reverse. Kahn – who scraped much of this “indie” film’s $10 million budget from his own pockets – has set up disappointed trailer watchers to discover a hidden gem in his second feature-length film.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Kahn’s fast-paced, Aaron Sorkin-like “Detention” deserves cult-hit status. Just as “The Social Network” embodies our Facebook culture, this SXSW film-festival favorite rewrites today’s high school movie bible.
Despite what this film’s sophomoric trailer might lead you to believe, “Detention” is anything but tenderfoot and witless. And don’t be nauseated by the disenchanting storyline of a killer named Cinderhella stalking the high school student body while a gaggle of co-eds...

What kind of movie is “Detention?”
In this film, a young actor named Parker Bagley plays Billy Nolan, a high school jock who hides the truth from friends and enemies about his own half-fly DNA. He vomits acid and his wings spring up at inopportune moments. Billy's spent a large portion of his childhood trying to hide his alien mutation by wearing a giant television set over his hand. At the midway point of the film, we realize Billy Nolan is only a supporting character, and his fate is, in many ways, irrelevant to the resolution of the film.
So yes, it’s that kind of movie. Or it’s the kind of movie that features a time-traveling bear. Or a movie that features a crucial moment where a character performs the “Dirty Dancing” choreography to a remix of “MmmBop.” It’s also a film where we realize one of...

Alrighty then! Get out your planners, kids. It's time to change a couple of things around. Don't forget to use pencil instead of pen because you just never know. Ready? Good! Let's begin.
Look for Joseph Kahn's genre mash-up Detention, starring Josh Hutcherson, Spencer Locke, Parker Bagley, Dane Cook and Richard Brake, to hit limited theatres on April 6th with Sony handling the DVD and Blu-ray releases a little further down the road.
And sadly... Dead Snow director Tommy Wirkola's next flick, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, starring Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, Famke Janssen, Zoe Bell and Peter Stormare, has taken a massive bump from Paramount, who's moving it into a release slot of January 11, 2013 (instead of the previously announced March 2, 2012).
We'll have more if anything changes.

You've heard quite a bit about Joseph Kahn's mindf*ck of a slasher, Detention, which David Harley raved about out of SXSW. While the film is more of a pop culture slap-in-the-face, the slasher starring Josh Hutcherson, Dane Cook, Shanley Caswell, Spencer Locke, Parker Bagley, Alison Woods, Walter Perez and Carrie Wiita is quite violent. Behold a bit of proof in the first blood image below. " 'Detention' tells the story of the senior class at Grizzly Lake high school. Out with the old and in with the new: Vote for your favorite Jason!
Alison’s shady brother Jason returned to Rosewood on the June 21 episode of Pretty Little Liars, and he brought along more than just a hidden agenda — he also brought a new face! Newcomer Drew Van Acker has now taken over the role originated by Parker Bagley in season one, and we want to know which one You like better.
The change was the topic of much debate during the episode — the hashtag #NewJason was thrown around quite a bit — and even Sara Shepard, the writer of the original Pretty Little Liars book series, chimed in with her thoughts:
“Ooh, I like new Jason!” she tweeted during the show. “More like how i imagined him…”
Ok, so Drew has Sara’s seal of approval, but does he have yours? Weigh in below:

The clues continue to pile up: Ian may be alive & Melissa may be helping him hide!
The ladies of Pretty Little Liars were forced to endure their therapist-mandated trial separation on the June 21 episode, and one thing became very clear very quickly: Bad things happen when these girls are kept apart! Emily (Shay Mitchell) had her hard-drive erased, Spencer (Troian Bellisario) got bitched out by her sister, Hanna (Ashley Benson) sided with the enemy, and Aria (Lucy Hale) got attacked by a stranger in the night. Safety in numbers, my friends. Safety in numbers.
Meanwhile, a familiar face returned to Rosewood this week — though it wasn’t quite as familiar as I remembered it. Confused? Allow me to explain: Alison’s brother Jason is back in town, only now he’s being played by Drew Van Acker instead of Parker Bagley. But regardless of who’s playing him, Jason remains super shady.

At first glance, Joseph Kahn's Detention looks, as I've said before, like it might be just a "post-Scream meta-slasher movie." But the trailer [1] we saw for the film suggested that it is a lot more than that, or at least a lot more crazy than that. Reviews out of SXSW, where the film premiered, were slightly mixed, but the enthusiastic ones were very enthusiastic. In short, I'm hoping that Detention will be a movie that can satiate my hunger for a wild genre movie in the same way that Attack the Block satisfies as a teen-oriented summer sci-fi thriller. We'll all get to see Detention sometime in the coming months thanks to Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, which has picked up all rights to distribute the film. A press release and a THR [2] news break offer up the news, and the press release giddily repeats one summarization of the film: "an apocalyptic,...

A major studio taking an interest in a small indie film that's been polarizing audiences on the festival scene? Now that's something that you don't see every day! Thankfully for director Joseph Kahn that's exactly the case for his new film, Detention.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has picked up worldwide rights to Detention Films' Detention, which bills itself as an apocalyptic, body-swapping, time-traveling teen romantic comedy.
“The pace, energy and awesomeness Kahn has achieved in Detention are completely mind-blowing in the best way possible,” said Spwa vp production Scott Shooman, who announced the acquistion along with Spwa senior vp business affairs Michael Helfand and Detention Films’ Abramoff and Weager.
Detention stars Dane Cook, Josh Hutcherson, Shanley Caswell, Spencer Locke, Parker Bagley, Alison Woods, Walter Perez, and Evan Williams. Look for more soon.

"Pretty Little Liars"' couples and drama go together like peanut butter and jelly, don't they?
The couple arguably dealing with the most drama in Season 2 is Rosewood's original -- and dare we say fan favorite? -- couple, Aria (Lucy Hale) and Ezra (Ian Harding). A new job, two new love interests (underwear model included) and a sizable age difference can do that to a relationship.
"Ezra has resigned has the English teacher so he's going to go to teach at Hollis College. Aria, to spend more time with him, enrolls in Hollis," Hale tells Zap2it. "Season 2 will be about them trying to make this more of an adult relationship -- more out in the open, more public. But there are a lot more speed bumps and it's a lot harder than they think."
One of those speed bumps? Ezra's ex-fiance Jackie, who, as we learned in the finale,...

The season finale of ABC Family’s addictive and stylish teen soap Pretty Little Liars left a lot of questions hanging when it aired back in March. Most glaringly, what the heck happened to Ian’s body after he was seemingly hanged in the belltower at the hands of Spencer and the ever-mysterious “A”? Since the series returns tonight with its second-season premiere, answers are to come soon enough. But how about a little preview of what’s gonna happen this season to tide you over? EW was on the show’s set last month and has all the scoop.

Aria Montgomery's love life is getting more complicated in season 2 of "Pretty Little Liars". The character played by Lucy Hale will find herself caught in a love triangle as another man threatens her relationship with Ezra.
Making it more intriguing, the third person is none other than the brother of her deceased friend, Alison. "You've met the character before," executive producer I. Marlene King gushes about Aria's new love interest. "But he's been recast so it's going to be a new actor in that role."
Alison's brother Jason Dilaurentis has indeed been recast with Drew Van Acker replacing original actor Parker Bagley. On why they decided to recast the role, Marlene claims, "This actor works more for where we're going with that story."
Spilling more details on how Aria and Jason grow closer, Marlene explains, "He plays a dark and mysterious guy, and he taps into Aria's dark and mysterious side.

There's another man in Aria Montgomery's (Lucy Hale) life. That's right: Pretty Little Liars is serving up a juicy little love triangle in its second season, premiering next Tuesday on ABC Family. So who is this new guy threatening Aria and Ezra's (Ian Harding) "Don't Stand So Close to Me" romance? Well, for starters, he's not exactly "new"... "You've met the character before," executive producer I. Marlene King told us about Ezra's romantic rival, "but he's been recast so it's going to be a new actor in that role." In fact, Drew Van Acker is replacing actor Parker Bagley as—wait for it—Jason Dilaurentis—Alison's...

Joseph Kahn (Torque) believed in himself and his film, Detention, so much that he financed the teen horror comedy himself. He made every decision and what’s on the screen is his baby.
The film, starring Josh Hutcherson, Dane Cook, Walter Perez and Parker Bagley, follows a high school senior who is given detention on the night of her prom. Throughout the night, her friends are terrorized and killed by a movie serial killer.
Joseph brought the film to SXSW for its world premiere and it definitely did not disappoint. The film is filled with pop culture references, quick edits and is beautifully shot, it’s definitely the work of a stellar music video director.
I talked to Joseph the morning after the premiere and he was definitely in good spirits. We talked about his decision to finance the film himself, not finishing casting till 2 weeks into the film and finding the perfect actors.

Walter Perez and Parker Bagley are both starring in the new teen horror comedy Detention. The movie, directed by Joseph Kahn and also starring Dane Cook and Josh Hutcherson, is about a group of teens that has to survive their last year of high school. That’s going to be hard because a slasher movie killer has seemingly come to life. They’ll survive, if they can only get out of detention.
Unfortunately, when I talked with them we were at a bar with lots of noise. You gotta love SXSW! So, transcribing the interview was really hard to do. Walter and Parker talked to me about the film, how they got started and crazy auditions! Download the file and check it out!

Undoubtedly, one of the most polarizing genre movies of the South by Southwest Film Festival was writer/director Joseph Kahn’s Detention. It’s definitely one of those ‘love it or hate it’ flicks that is filled with flashy images, pop culture references, and quick edits that you’d come to expect from a legendary music video director like Kahn. Like the film or not, audiences can’t deny that Kahn has a style that is most definitely all his own.
Dread Central had the opportunity to sit down and chat with Kahn and his co-writer Mark Palermo while in Austin to talk about their experiences after enjoying the world premiere of Detention at the festival earlier, Kahn’s thoughts on modern horror, and a discussion on some of the homages and pop culture references in the flick.
Check out our exclusive video interview with the pair, and look for more on the film soon.

...Or we should say "Cheat Sheets" since this year's SXSW Film Festival boasts over 140 films, requiring more than just one page to cover every single one of the narrative and documentary features that will be playing in Austin from March 11th through 19th. While the festival has already provided a very helpful schedule to flip through and Pdf of the screening grid online, consider this your quick hit guide to all the features at the festival - every title leads to its corresponding festival page in addition to links to trailers, official sites, filmmakers' Facebook pages and Twitter accounts so you can follow the action from the festival or from home.
Meanwhile, there will be plenty of action during these next two weeks on IFC.com where, in addition to our live video page, Matt Singer (@mattsinger) and I (@mfrushmore) will be filing reviews and interviews throughout the film festival.

You probably best known director Joseph Kahn as the man behind the delightfully terrible Torque, a movie even Kahn mocks in his new picture Detention. The trailer for Detention is bizarre enough to make the film worth a look as it seems to be dancing in between Scream, The Breakfast Club, and Disney Channel made-for-tv movies. Even the synopsis doesn't make much sense: Detention, is a teen horror-comedy where the local students of Grizzly Lake must survive their final year of high school. Standing in their way is a slasher movie killer who has seemingly come to life. It becomes a race against time to stop the killer and save the world - if only they can get out of detention. The Detention cuts through prom. Most of them don't have dates anyway. We've been sent the poster for the film and it features a drawing of a bear with a skull for a mouth.

Torque director Joseph Kahn is bringing this stylish commercial directing to this month's SXSW Film Festival as they'll be holding the world premiere of Detention, his slasher film that look like Scream meets Prom Night meets a SyFy original, with the Burger King's Queen as the killer, as we previously reported. The trailer premiered last week to a flurry of positive remarks, now we got our hands on two more stills and the official festival one sheet. Josh Hutcherson, Dane Cook, Shanley Caswell, Spencer Locke, Parker Bagley, Alison Woods, Walter Perez, and Carrie Wiita all star. " 'Detention' tells the story of the senior class at Grizzly Lake high school. The road to graduation is never an easy one, but it's further complicated for these students by the arrival of a slasher movie killer who has seemingly come to life. The only ones who can stop the killer are a handful of students.

MTV's Detention Josh Hutcherson (The Kids Are All Right) and Dane Cook (Good Luck Chuck) star in Detention an original film from MTV. Detention is an out there slasher film that combines elements from the best work of Greg Araki (Kaboom, The Doom Generation),Wes Craven (Scream) with a dash of John Hughes (The Breakfast Club, Weird Science) complete with alien spaceships, masked serial killers, tormenting bullies, scumbag principals, spectacularly hot cheerleaders and all that other good stuff that comes with high school life. Compelling topics on their own, no doubt, but how do they work when combined together? Just tune into "Detention" and you're sure to find out.

The Detention Movie Trailer has premiered. Joseph Kahn‘s Detention (2011) stars Josh Hutcherson, Dane Cook, Shanley Caswell, Spencer Locke, Aaron David Johnson, Walter Perez, Erica Shaffer, Parker Bagley, and Alison Woods. Detention (2011)’s plot synopsis: “a teen horror-comedy where the local students of Grizzly Lake must survive their final year of high school. Standing in their way is a slasher movie killer who has seemingly come to life. It becomes a race against time to stop the killer and save the world – if only they can get out of detention. The Detention cuts through prom. Most of them don’t have dates anyway.” One of the things that is hilarious about this movie trailer is that director Joseph Kahn makes fun of one of his previous films, Torque. The high school students actually seem to be high school student age in this horror comedy film and very Dawson’s Creek self aware.

Torque director Joseph Kahn has made a very strange-looking teen slasher movie called Detention. The film will soon premiere at SXSW, and the trailer has arrived today. While the opening of the trailer might make you think this is a routine post-Scream meta-slasher movie, be sure to watch all the way through. Because this one goes to some unexpected places by the end. If nothing else, the trailer sells Detention's very high 'Wtf?' factor, and that's pretty great. MTV [1] presents the trailer, and at first I was a little put off. There's an opening gag about Torque, which is fun, and Holy Fuck's song 'Frenchy's' [2] drew me in. But there's a good little bit of high school drama and politics to set up, and that bit of the trailer isn't cut so well. But then it goes off the rails with shots of murder, aliens, and all sorts of other weirdness.

Joseph Khan was originally attached to Neuromancer, but after watching this trailer for his new horror/comedy Detention I must say I'm glad he's off the project and Vincenzo Natali has moved in. Khan's film is a Scream spoof ten years too late and a bad 80s homage rolled together into one big #fail.
On paper it sounds great and is said to be "in the vein of Scream with elements of Back to the Future (time travel is involved) and classic John Hughes teen films from the 80's." But I'm not really convinced by what I'm seeing here.
