Now on its fourth year, the Santiago Film Festival’s Morbido-Sanfic Lab features an ever more diverse selection from Ibero-America.
As Morbido founder-ceo Pablo Guisa said of this year’s edition: “It has projects from multiple countries, several produced or directed by women as well as one LGBTQ-themed project and, for the first time, a documentary.” Vampire creatures abound in this crop.
Humberto Mazari, the helmer-scribe-producer behind one of the six projects, psychological thriller “The Alaska Summit” (“La Cumbre de Alaska),” is developing three comic book spinoffs which will further delve into the underworld of the summit and the creatures that guard it. “In the coming weeks we expect to consolidate the visual aesthetics with three Latin American illustrators in charge of bringing these comic books to life,” he told Variety.

The first trailer of the new movie by genre-film Chilean director Francesc Morales (Humanimal), has appeared after months from its first screenings around the world in different festivals and venues, and now is trying to have a Chilean release, but for that, it needs your help. The director has put up a Idea.me page to raise 2000 dollars to have it released in Chilean theaters, that is the main goal for a movie like this, that tries to bring a new topic to the table: therapeutic abortion, a practice that is illegal in the South American country. The film tries to raise awareness about this subject, and the synopsis reads as follows:Adriana is told the child she's expecting has a brain malformation that won't allow him...

Considering I watched Apio Verde at the International Festival of Fantastic, Terror and Science Fiction Films (Feratum), I expected something a bit different from what we got. I expected, yes, a brutal film about the abortion issue but with some crazy fantastic elements attached to its natural horror. Francesc Morales' film doesn't need anything like that, after all we are dealing with the story of a young woman (star Catherine Mozoyer doing a terrific job) who's living a tragic pregnancy: her baby won't survive due the anencephaly disorder and, eventually, her life will be in danger too. While the movie has some classic physiological horror through its main character (her mind imagines dark things), Morales' main intention is achieving an explicit denouncement against the unjustified...

We first heard about Apio Verde last December, when the startling first image, featuring a bloody pregnant woman, was released. Now we're pleased to premiere the first teaser for the film, directed by Francesc Morales, as well as a brief interview with the director. Morales summarizes the premise of the film: "Apio Verde is a psychological thriller focused on Adriana (Catherine Mazoyer), a woman who is told her child has anencephaly, a brain malformation that won't allow her child to live once he's outside the womb. As therapeutical abortion is illegal in Chile, she must wait five months until giving natural birth. She's in a situation where she can't stand her own body, as she feels she's carrying a monster." In the interview, conducted...

Chilean director Francesc Morales (Humananimal) is directing his second full feature film Apio Verge. The movie is about "a young woman waiting to give birth to a son with a terminal disease." Apio Verge when translated to English means "Green Celery" that's why in the first image from the film we see a bloody pregnant lady lying on a bed of celery. Apio Verde will deal with therapeutic abortion; abortion due to rape, the baby will not survive, or mother's life is in danger. In Chile therapeutic abortion is illegal and is a controversial topic in the country. Morales described the film as a social drama that eventually turns into a horror movie.

To call abortion a hot-button issue is a bit of an understatement. No matter which side of the fence you fall on pertaining to the topic, it's bound to be mired in controversy. Much like this latest flick will be.
According to Screen Daily Chilean director Francesc Morales (Humanimal) is currently shooting his second feature, Apio Verde, a psychological thriller which "starts as a social drama and ends as a horror film."
The movie is about consequences of Chile being one of the ten countries in the world where therapeutic abortion is illegal. A bloody, pregnant woman lies sprawled on the ground, surrounded by green celery. Apio Verde is the film -- translated into English, that's "green celery" -- and therapeutic abortion is the subject. Francesc Morales made Humanimal last year, which had a strange little trailer that we ran. The finished product ended up hitting a few festivals, though I haven't been able to find any reviews. Nonetheless, the director has moved on to a new project that sounds quite personal. Via Screen Daily, word comes that Apio Verde has begun shooting. And according to an article on the Chilean news site Nacion, Morales says that he began to write the script on the recommendation of his psychiatrist, and makes reference to his own personal history. He described...

The director of Humanimal , Francesc Morales, is embarking on a new endeavor called Apio Verde . Screen Daily reports the film is a psychological thriller set in Chile that is about "a young woman waiting to give birth to a son with a terminal disease." The story touches on therapeutic abortion (illegal in Chile) and, according to Morales, is said to start as a drama and end as a horror film. "The story is based on lives of many real people and it also shows how politics and religion get involved on a subject like this. Yet the movie is not a drama, but a thriller that states how this is not only an attempt to the human rights but also a situation that always leads to a violent resolution," Morales told Sd. His previous effort, Mumanimal featured...

Francesc Morales' upcoming genre-defying feature Humanimal features no dialogue and no CG effects. What it does have, however, is a cast of human actors in hand made animal costumes playing out a sort of Animal Farm inspired morality fable. Odd is an understatement. We've been keeping an eye on this one since the first concept art released and we've just been sent the official trailer. Again, odd is an understatement. Check it below.

Horror films stopped scaring me a long time ago. The last film that really got under my skin was Neil Marshall’s “The Descent,” which probably had more to do with picture’s relentless claustrophobia than anything else. And while I still enjoy sitting down with the more unusual, avant-garde entries in the genre, almost none of them elicit anything remotely resembling actual terror or fear. Chilean director Francesc Morales’ upcoming surrealist horror outing “Humanimal,” on the other hand, seriously gives me the creeps. Maybe it’s those unsettling animal suits, or maybe it’s the film’s complete lack of dialogue — whatever the case may be, I’m definitely more than a little freaked out. A quick trip to IMDb for a clue as to what, exactly, this picture is all about only amplifies my confusion. Here’s the only official synopsis I can find: A couple of animals,...

Humanimal tells a story centered on a pair of animals, clumsy Turtle and cunning fox who live together. Their stormy relationship intensifies when both fall in love with the Gata, which seems to be interested only in those that incorporate human habits.

Fango got a bunch of exclusive photos (see them below) and a progress report from Chilean filmmaker Francesc Morales on his wild and surreal horror film Humanimal. We last brought you word on the movie, which recently wrapped, here.
“We’re currently working on postproduction and editing the film and are hoping to have the final copy in around two months,” Morales tells Fango. The movie, which showcases actors dressed in animal costumes, gained a good deal of attention from its unsettling teaser trailer (which can be seen below), which led Morales to secure a bigger budget to help him land better production values and round up a solid ensemble. “As the movie is a very surrealist story, it was necessary for us to make a teaser trailer to find investors,” he explains. “Last year, we shot 15 minutes of actual scenes that allowed us to show how the movie was going to feel and look.

Chilean filmmaker Francesc Morales pointed us to a trailer for his horror-fantasy Humanimals executive produced by Jorge Olguín ( Sangre Eterna ). Essentially, it's this: A couple of humans dressed as animals - a Turtle and the smart Fox - live locked up in a house. Their chaotic relationship is intensified after they fall in love with Cat (again, a chick in a feline costume), but she is only interested in who learns human habits. Strange? You bet. Horrifying if you've got a fear of furries. Jenny Cavallo, Ramón Llao and Sebastián Layseca play Cat, Turtle and Fox, respectively. Check out the trailer below. And get this, there's no dialogue . For info, visit the film's official site .
