A sign of Spain’s rising profile as a top market for Prime Video, Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, and James Farrell, the L.A.-based VP of international originals at Prime Video, flew to Madrid this week, with the world premiere of “Red Queen” (“Reina Roja”), the series adaption of the first book in Juan Gómez-Jurado’s hit trilogy, taking place on Monday night.
The streamer is rolling off the record-breaking finale of its first weekly live entertainment show “Operación Triunfo,” and has revealed that the top three of the the ten most-watched Spanish Originals of 2023 – “My Fault,” “Awareness” and “Los Farad” – have received on average 80% of streams outside of Spain, reaching a milestone for the international reach of Prime Video’s non-English language content.
“The last 12 months has been a truly remarkable time for Spanish-language content,” said Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios at Prime Video.

A predictably spectacular sunset spreads streaks of pink and orange across a northern Spanish late September sky, heralding the end of another packed edition of the San Sebastian Film Festival, where at the closing gala, “The Rye Horn” the second feature from Spanish director Jaione Camborda has just been handed the Golden Shell, the festival’s top award.
It is perhaps a surprising win, but does now mark the fourth consecutive year that the festival’s most prestigious prize has gone to a female director. But in another way it has to be a first: the international jury, comprising French director Claire Denis, alongside Chinese actor and producer Fan Bingbing, Colombian producer-director Cristina Gallego, French photographer Brigitte Lacombe, Spanish actor Vicky Luengo, Canadian producer and distributor Robert Lantos and German director Christian Petzold, has chosen to award not just a Spanish film, but one from a female director who was...

Javier Bardem, winner of a San Sebastian 2023 Donostia Award for career achievement, is putting back his on-stage acceptance of the distinction until the 2024 San Sebastian Film Festival.
The postponement is due to the “limits imposed under the strike called by the U.S. Actors Union (SAG-AFTRA),” the San Sebastian Festival announced Friday.
It deprives this year’s Festival of its biggest on-stage major star moment this year.
The fest will, however, enjoy its customary bullish presence of world-class auteurs, led this year by Claire Denis, main competition jury chair, and Victor Erice, will accept his Donostia Award on Sept. 29. San Sebastian announced Friday that Hayao Miyazaki will also accept a Donostia Award online.
Gabriel Byrne, François Cluzet, Emmanuelle Devos, Griffin Dunne, Aidan Gillen, Mads Mikkelsen, James Norton and Dominic West have confirmed their attendance, Byrne and Gillen for one of the festival’s biggest tickets, James Marsh’s official selection closing film “Dance First.

There’s heat and intensity to this Catalan language film about a city couple facing a tricky first season in charge of a cork farm even before any of the locals talk about the risk of fire. We see it burning between Elena (Vicky Luengo) and Ivan (Pol López) on the dance floor, an environment which will later prove a stage for another scene of emotional outpouring. The pair, who are expecting their first child, move to a rundown finca, once owned by Elena’s grandmother. In addition to inheriting the house and the cork tree woodland that it sits within, they also end up with grandma’s donkey, Poum, one of just a few overcooked elements that betrays this is Basaque director Mikel Gurrea’s first full-length feature.
Elena has big ambitions for the farmhouse, something Ivan has misgivings about as he believes her grand designs are out of keeping with the setting.

Vying for the top Gold Shell at the 70th San Sebastian Film Festival, Basque native Mikel Gurrea’s debut feature “Suro” stems from Gurrea’s experience working in the cork forests north of Catalonia. He had just finished his studies and was at a loss when his then girlfriend’s parents suggested he work in the forests where they stripped cork from the trees. “I discovered a fascinating world that stayed with me; the work is tough but you’re in the middle of nature,” he said. “It was also a good workout!” he added.
“Suro” revolves around a young couple, Helena and Ivan, who decide to leave Barcelona and start anew on the land that Helena has inherited. Ivan takes it upon himself to join the workers and learn how to strip the bark from the cork trees that now belong to them. But their contrasting viewpoints will jeopardize their future as a couple,...

Lending some bigger movie heft to the Malaga market, Latido Films is bringing onto the international sales scene two thrillers – though very different propositions – from Academy Award winning producer Tornasol Media (“The Secret in Their Eyes”).
“Thrillers have high export potential, but they’re a highly competitive market and since Spanish movies can’t compete with U.S. films’ star power, they have to offer something else,” said Latido Films head Antonio Saura.
Both in production, what Imanol Uribe’s “La Mirada de Lucía” and Oscar Aibar’s “El sustituto” offer is high quality entertainment grounded in different but powerful social realities.
The directors go about addressing that reality in highly different ways, however.

It is fitting in many ways that Movistar Plus’ “Riot Police” (“Antidisturbios”) saw its world premiere in a theater at one of Europe’s biggest film festivals: September’s San Sebastian in Spain.
Feted by the domestic press — “the best Spanish series of the year,” trumpeted newspaper El Mundo — the Movistar Plus original series has closed sales to France and Latin America with “partners of the highest caliber,” “Riot Police” producer Domingo Corral, Movistar head of original programming, said at San Sebastián.
Co-written — with regular writing partner Isabel Peña and Eduardo Villanueva — and directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, “Riot Police” marks just the latest entry in the seemingly unending diaspora of renowned Spanish cineastes into drama series creation. Director of the 2019 Academy Award-nominated short “Madre” and a short-lived TV director, Sorogoyen broke out as a film director with his first solo feature, 2016’s “May God Save Us,” a San Sebastian screenplay winner,...

After grinding to a halt because of the pandemic, this feature debut produced by Marta Figueras, starring Carolina Yuste, Vicky Luengo, Ángela Cervantes and Elisabet Casanovas, has restarted shooting. The feature-length fiction debut by Carol Rodríguez Colás will wrap its shoot at the end of June, having resumed after the break forced upon it by the coronavirus crisis. Chavalas (lit. “Lasses”), which is being filmed in the Barcelona neighbourhood of Poblenou and in Cornellà, stars Vicky Luengo (The Laws of Thermodynamics and soon to appear in the series Antidisturbios – see the news), Elisabet Casanovas (famous for her role in the series Merlí), Carolina Yuste (winner of the Goya Award for her turn in Carmen & Lola and set to grace screens in Sky High in August) and Ángela Cervantes (Perfect Life). The cast is rounded off by Ana Fernández, José Mota, Cristina Plazas, Mario Zorrilla, Biel Durán, Maite Buenafuente,...
Raúl Arévalo, Alex García, Patrick Criado and Vicky Luengo star in this crime series, which the director of Madre and The Realm has just finished shooting in squares, patios and avenues around Madrid. Since then, they have remained firm friends and have been eager to work together again. An occasion to do just that has now presented itself in the form of the series Antidisturbios, (lit. “Antiriot Squad”), which the man behind The Realm has been shooting since early September 2019 in the streets of the Spanish capital.
