On the day of Geraldine Viswanathan’s THR interview, the actress is in the middle of an overstuffed week of promotion for her starring role in Ethan Coen’s latest film, Drive-Away Dolls, which, until that point, was the biggest thing to happen to her career. But Viswanathan, 28, also was just cast in Thunderbolts, Marvel Studios’ next tentpole. She replaces Ayo Edebiri, who had to depart for scheduling reasons but offered her an “epic” handoff. “Ayo and I go way back, and she’s actually looking after my car right now in L.A.,” says Viswanathan. “That Kia Nero is the love of my life, and Ayo is one of my closest friends. She was really instrumental in my decision to take the role, and it’s been nice to be able to talk about it with somebody who knows what it is.”

A movie star and international pop sensation. A key cast member of a hit TV show. And a Saturday Night Live cast member.
Which would you have bet would steal the promo spotlight? If you chose “C” for Heidi Gardner of SNL, you’d be correct.
Host Ayo Edebiri and musical guest Jennifer Lopez played the foil to Gardner in the second promo of the week touting this Saturday’s show.
After a brief bit of logrolling compliments between Ayo and Jlo and a quick bit of misdirection on show plans, Gardner confused the Jlo nickname for an artist other than Jennifer Lopez. The singer jumped in to correct her, only to have Edebiri drop another bit of information that further confused things.

Ayo Edebiri needed a helping hand at the 75th Emmy Awards, and her seatmate Carson Daly was happy to oblige.
Edebiri asked Daly to hold her purse and phone while she went to the stage to accept her Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series award for The Bear.
Daly appeared on Wednesday’s episode of Today and revealed a small trick he played while Edebiri was backstage talking to the press.
“Ayo’s phone, though, it was locked, of course, but I was able to get into the camera,” Daly said. “I may have left her a little Easter egg. If she checks her camera, I don’t know.”
Daly snapped a selfie with his wife, Siri. However, he said he had “no idea” the moment was spotted by fans.
Edebiri eventually saw the picture and sent it to Today, which shared it and a message from her on Friday.

The Continental: From the World of John Wick director Albert Hughes first crossed paths with John Wick masterminds Chad Stahelski and David Leitch in 2008. At the time, Stahelski and Leitch had only recently decided to make the jump from stunt work to the director’s chair, beginning with second unit. So they interviewed for the second-unit gig on The Book of Eli, which Hughes co-directed alongside his twin brother, Allen. Stahelski and Leitch didn’t end up with the job, but it didn’t stop them from achieving their directorial dream a handful of years later when they co-directed the Keanu Reeves actioner John Wick.
Nearly a decade later, John Wick is one of the preeminent action franchises, boasting four films, each of which has outgrossed its predecessors at the box office, with a fifth on the way. Stahelski reminded Hughes of their encounter 15 years earlier during a Zoom meeting...

The world of “Bottoms” isn’t always the most coherent (better not to apply any logic to why a high school football mascot has a felt dick); but being a teenager isn’t the most rational experience. One of the film’s great strengths is how director and co-writer Emma Seligman creates a flexible reality for the world of its perennial losers Pj (Rachel Sennott) and Josie (Ayo Edebiri). The two heroes start a self defense club in an effort to get laid, and what starts as a hilariously thin ruse culminates with in the girls punching, kicking, and pounding a rival football team to death in order to save doofy jock Jeff (Nicholas Galitzine) from sprinklers filled with pineapple juice.
“It was like ‘Scott Pilgrim’ in a John Hughes world,” said Seligman when they were a guest on IndieWire’ Filmmaker Toolkit podcast.

One of the downright hilarious comedy films of the year so far is Bottoms, filmmaker Emma Seligman’s teen sex romp about a pair of lesbian high school pals, Pj (Rachel Sennott) and Josie (Ayo Edebiri), who have never done the deed — and are desperate to. Pj and Josie have the hots for popular girls Brittany (Kaia Gerber) and Isabel (Havana Rose Liu) respectively, and so, they decide to start an all-female fight club in an effort to get laid. Our film critic, David Fear, called it “the horniest, bloodiest...

Are Emma Seligman and Rachel Sennott the Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro of queer indie cinema? That remains to be seen, but their second feature "Bottoms" definitely has the potential to be the sleeper hit of August. "Bottoms" is about Pj (Sennott) and Josie (Ayo Edebiri), two lesbian high school seniors desperate to get laid before college. So, they start a women's self-defense club, hoping to hook up with the cheerleaders who join.
Distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the film employed a staggered rollout. It opened in just 10 locations across the U.S. on August 25, 2023, taking in $516 thousand, enjoying a boost from great buzz (read /Film's review here) and discounted $4 tickets on August 27, aka National Cinema Day.
A week later, it opened wide across 715 theaters, and its momentum hasn't dissipated. Though "The Equalizer 3" was the box office king of Labor Day Weekend, "Bottoms" looks to make a healthy gross too...

Ayo Edebiri is having quite the 2023. She started off the year winning the Independent Spirit Award for her performance on "The Bear" — aka the best show on television — and subsequently received her first Emmy nomination for it as well (results pending). She has a recurring role on "Abbott Elementary," the rare network sitcom to achieve broad popularity in many years. On the big screen, she gives vocal performances in two highly acclaimed animated films with "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem," and she delivers a standout supporting turn in the mockumentary "Theater Camp." Capping it all off is her lead role in Emma Seligman's "Bottoms" opposite Rachel Sennott, which just so happens to be the funniest comedy in years. When I came upon her podcast "Iconography" back in 2019, I hoped for this kind of success for her, but it's rare when that manifestation becomes reality.

Emma Seligman's "Bottoms" isn't just the funniest film of the year. I'd argue it's the funniest film to hit the big screen since The Lonely Island's "Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping" back in 2016. Though indebted to so many high school comedies that came before it, "Bottoms" operates on its own absurd tonal wavelength that I can't really compare to much else. Every joke hits, even on a repeat viewing, and that kind of comedic stamina is so hard to maintain, but they do it beautifully. Comedy is my favorite, which in turn makes it the genre I scrutinize most closely, and "Bottoms" wildly succeeds.
This shouldn't come as much of a surprise considering Seligman's previous film "Shiva Baby," which also starred Rachel Sennott (who stars in and co-wrote "Bottoms" with Seligman). That film is as funny as it is anxiety-inducing. We know that partnership bears fruit and is a...

On a Saturday morning, Ayo Edebiri is discussing her first name. The restaurant required I put in my name for the breakfast order, a mundane request for most people but a potential point of distress for those of us with phonetically daunting monikers. The stakes are low if you’re a journalist but much higher if you’re a young actress and writer with one of the most electric careers of the moment — and a summer slate that’s poised to further cement her stardom. Ayo (Eye-oh) is a star of The Bear, FX’s restaurant-set dramedy that became a runaway hit last summer and returned for season two in June. She has film roles in Theater Camp, Bottoms and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem; makes a memorable appearance in the much-discussed first episode of Black Mirror‘s latest season, “Joan Is Awful”; and will join the Marvel Cinematic...
