All 28 Live-Action Horror Movies Based on a Video Game, Ranked
Image
Video game movies do not have a great reputation, but their reputation is getting better. As modern filmmakers do a better job of understanding and cracking the source material, adapting it faithfully and effectively for the silver screen, the overall stats for video game adaptations seem to be on the rise, with better and better movie versions coming out all the time.

Still, the history of video game movies remains littered with cheap cash-ins and well-intentioned disappointments, and you can really tell from looking at all the live-action horror movies that have come out in the last few decades. Scary video games are incredibly immersive, but many of the movies based on those games have fallen prey to unconvincing production values, amateurish writing/directing/acting, and bizarre and ridiculous tones that weren’t necessarily in the games to begin with.

Let’s take a look at every horror movie based...

The first two films, Silent Hill and Silent Hill: Revelation, were critical failures. However, gamers were completely blown away by the gameplay of Silent Hill 2, which raises the expectations of the current film. The game took inspiration from Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment.

2024 Emmy Predictions: Best Drama Supporting Actress
Image
Ready to make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Drama Supporting Actress? Before you do, take a look through our photo gallery featuring the likeliest contenders. Elizabeth Debicki (“The Crown”) being the only 2023 nominee eligible to return puts her in the frontrunner position and leaves the remaining slots open to a bevy of formidable newcomers and past hopefuls.

This year’s supporting actress candidates will not have to fend off reigning champ Jennifer Coolidge of “The White Lotus,” which is set to return in 2025 with an almost completely fresh cast. All nine acting nominees from the show’s most recent season are presumably finished playing their roles, as are 2023 featured female competitors Rhea Seehorn and J. Smith-Cameron from the concluded series “Better Call Saul” and “Succession.”

“The Morning Show” cast mates Julianna Margulies and Holland Taylor are each seeking a second win in this category after respectively being honored for “ER...

Justified: City Primeval Cast & Character Guide — All New & Returning Actors
Image
Justified: City Primeval brings back old characters and introduces new ones in a gripping story set in Detroit. The miniseries is based on Elmore Leonard's City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit and blends Western and city noir elements. The impressive cast, including Timothy Olyphant, Boyd Holbrook, and Aunjanue Ellis, contribute to the success of Justified: City Primeval.

Justified: City Primeval is the long-anticipated 2023 follow-up to the original FX Justified series, and it sees the return of a few old characters as well as the introduction of many new ones. The original Justified ran for six seasons, from 2010-2015, and in 2022, it was announced that the beloved characters of Harlan County would be going to Detroit for an eight-episode miniseries. Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens left the Appalachian Mountains for Miami sometime in the interim but finds himself now in Detroit, helping the local police with a manhunt.

‘Justified: City Primeval’s Raylan Givens Wins Last Showdown Before Retirement; Wait, Who Just Escaped From Prison? Spoilers Ahead
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story contains details of the August 29 series finale of Justified: City Primeval.

Timothy Olyphant’s return to the role of U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens in Justified: City Primeval completed its eight-episode limited series run tonight on FX. Surviving the Oklahoma Wildman Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook), Givens seemed headed to a proper retirement, hanging up his badge and gun for a quiet life in Miami. Just when he was finally out — a pensioner content to refurbish a Florida shack and dote on the daughter he neglected for years — with the promise of a relationship with lawyer Carolyn (Aunjanue Ellis)…up pops Boyd Crowder, the charming silver-tongued psychopath played by Walton Goggins. Crowder, who vexed Raylan on and off throughout the original series creation from the Elmore Leonard novels, has escaped with the help of a girlfriend posing as a guard who is supposed to escort him to...

‘Justified: City Primeval’ Episode 7 Finds the Smoking Gun and Snuffs It Out — Spoilers
Image
[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Justified: City Primeval” Episode 7, “The Smoking Gun.”]

Before handing over the long sought-after murder weapon, Trennell (Joseph Anthony Byrd) asks Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) a simple question: “You sure you can use it?” Can Raylan take this gun, a gun that could’ve saved Sweety (Vondie Curtis Hall) on more than one occasion, and use it to, if not avenge his death, then bring his killer to justice? Raylan says he can. He’s sure he can. Except, by the end of Episode 7, “The Smoking Gun,” that firearm isn’t locked up in an evidence locker or even held by law enforcement. It’s at the bottom of a river. And how it got there neatly sums up Raylan’s continued frustrations with the maddening depths of a labyrinthine Detroit legal system.

Of course, the most straightforward use comes and goes the quickest. Raylan turns the gun over to Maureen Downey (Marin Ireland), as he should,...

‘Justified: City Primeval’ Episode 5 Ponders How to Get a Good Night’s Sleep — Spoilers
Image
[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Justified: City Primeval” Episode 5, “You Good?”]

Heading into “City Primeval’s” second half, two Episode 5 conversations — neither, ostensibly, about the case at hand — provide a little something extra to chew on. The first savory chat takes place as Sweety (Vondie Curtis Hall) and Clement (Boyd Holbrook) wait for Bulldozer Burt’s (David Cross) lawncare workers to punch out for the day, so they can blackmail their first mark from the late Judge Guy’s little black book. As they sit idle, without music blasting (for once), Sweety remembers a time many years ago when he was roused from a sound slumber for the right reasons. His friend wanted him to come jam with Miles Davis! Sweety hustled over and did just that, slapping da bass until 6 a.m. “No chit chat, mother fucker just played,” Sweety says about Miles. But the jazz legend did share a few choice words with the future bartender.

‘Justified: City Primeval’ Episode 4 Looks for Love in All the Wrong Places… Save One — Spoilers
Image
[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Justified: City Primeval” Episode 4, “Kokomo.”]

A common occurrence in “Justified” sees Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) sit down with someone most people would consider scary, but rather than beg off, back down, or express much emotion (beyond his trademark frustration mixed with mild curiosity), the U.S. Marshall is forced to reflect on the nature of his duties. Past bosses like Mags Bennett (Margo Martindale) and Ellstin Limehouse (Mykelti Williamson) are perhaps the best examples, given the credible moral dilemmas each local leader elicits from Raylan, but challenges of principle can come from just about anyone. Like, say, Toma (Terry Kinney), the Albanian mob boss who invites Raylan for a chat after the “accident” suffered by his nephew, Skender (Alexander Pobutsky).

With a pushy Norbert (Norbert Leo Butz) in tow, Raylan arrives at the meeting planning to convince Toma to let Skender tell the truth: that he didn’t fall down the...

What Is Clement Mansel's Motive In Justified: City Primeval?
Image
This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Justified: City Primeval."

Clement Manzel (Boyd Holbrook) is a wild man. That's not just my assessment; the villain of "Justified: City Primeval" actually saunters into the show this season with the nickname "The Oklahoma Wildman," a moniker that's just as chaotic as the big bad himself. Holbrook has done an incredible job so far injecting the man with a sense of unhinged danger and unearned confidence. He's a murderer who seems to get away with his crimes again and again through sheer force of will, threatening whoever stands in his way. Now, with a dead judge's little black book in his hands, he seems like he could be unstoppable.

But what does Manzel actually want? In the latest episode of the series, he and his girlfriend Sandy (Adelaide Clemens) -- who seems to be a pile of frayed nerves but is also sincerely into him,...

Why Boyd Isn't Returning For Justified: City Primeval Explained By Walton Goggins
Image
Original Justified actor Walton Goggins explains why his character, Boyd Crowder, isn't a part of Justified: City Primeval. In the role of Boyd, Goggins appeared in every season of the original Justified series. Though he was originally meant to die in the premiere episode, Boyd was kept around after executive producer Graham Yost and test audiences responded favorably to Goggins' performance. In the process, Boyd went from a guest character to one of the show's most memorable regulars.

In an interview with The Wrap conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike, Goggins addressed why he isn't a part of the Justified: City Primeval cast. He mentioned, in part, that it "isn't the right place and time" and added that the choice to stay out of Justified's revival wasn't "one-sided." Still, Goggins praises lead actor Timothy Olyphant for his lead role as Raylan Gives, in addition to complimenting new antagonist Boyd Holbrook.

Justified: City Primeval Season 1, Episode 1 Recap & Spoilers
Image
The following contains spoilers for Justified: City Primeval Episode 1, "City Primeval," which debuted Tuesday, July 18 on FX.

Elmore Leonard's iconic hero Raylan Givens makes a comeback in Justified: City Primeval, which is an interesting new adventure for the stalwart U.S. Marshal. It's not based on a Raylan Givens story -- Leonard's novel City Primeval centered on a cop named Raymond Cruz. But Raymond and Raylan have a few things in common, and people who've read the book will recognize elements in the miniseries' opening episode, which efficiently sets up a push and pull between TV's most unique hero and the Motor City.

It's been 15 years since the Justified series finale, and life in Florida isn't all sunshine for Raylan. His daughter Willa -- portrayed by Timothy Olyphant's daughter Vivian Olyphant -- is now a young woman breaking people's noses. And there's the pickup truck that runs them off the road,...

‘Justified: City Primeval’ Review: Eps. 1 & 2 Pull Raylan Back to Chaos — Spoilers
Image
[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Justified: City Primeval” Episode 1, “City Primeval,” and Episode 2, “The Oklahoma Wildman.” For non-spoiler coverage, read our initial review.]

“Justified: City Primeval” wastes little time throwing Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) back into the thick of things, which is about the same amount of time it spends pretending all that much has changed. Sure, he’s based in Florida, which is where he was first based when “Justified” (Original Recipe) started; his soulmate, Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins), is locked away in Kentucky, nowhere to be found; and Willa, his daughter, is now a teenager. But even as it brings us up to speed on Raylan’s life, the opening scene predominantly speaks to the lingering demons our favorite U.S. Marshal has yet to quell.

Willa is on the way to what her dad calls “camp,” but what she refers to as “conversion therapy.” Either way, the young lady is going to be...

Nearly eight years after the conclusion of the original series, “Justified” has returned to FX. Tuesday marks the premiere of “Justified: City Primeval,” a continuation of the series that ran for six seasons.

From showrunners Dave Andron and Michael Dinner, “Justified: City Primeval” continues the story of Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant). After leaving Kentucky for Miami, Raylan continued to work as a U.S. Marshall and raise his daughter. But when an elusive criminal known as The Oklahoma Wildman (Boyd Holbrook) emerges in Detroit, Raylan will have to uproot his life in his pursuit of law and order.

The eight-episode continuation is based on the novel “City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit” by author Elmore Leonard. Consider this everything you need to know about how to watch new episodes:

When does “Justified: City Primeval” premiere?

It depends on how you’re watching. If you’re tuning into FX,...

Timothy Olyphant Reveals the ‘Justified’ Reasons to Bring Back Raylan Givens
Image
“We dug coal together.”

Timothy Olyphant closed out Justified in 2015 with those powerful final words, an ode to his character Raylan Givens’ complicated relationship with his home Harlan County, his longtime friend-turned-enemy Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins), and even himself. For those who stuck through the FX modern Western’s six seasons, it was a perfect encapsulation of the journey: from the Bennetts to the Crowes and everyone in between — the legend of Drew Thompson to a stiff drink of Pappy Van Winkle — the Justified community dug coal together.

Now, it’s time to head back to the mines.

Years after closing the door on the Kentucky-based crime drama, Raylan Givens returns in the form of limited series Justified: City Primeval. Taking its cues from Elmore Leonard’s celebrated novel City Primeval, the newest iteration of Justified bids farewell to Harlan, and all of Raylan’s old friends and foes, in...

‘Justified: City Primeval’: Everything to know before you watch the FX revival
Image
Few shows lend themselves to revivals naturally. “Justified,” the critically acclaimed FX drama starring Timothy Olyphant as Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, might not seem like a prime candidate to return after the Emmy-winning series nailed its series finale in 2015. But the show is coming back on July 18 for a limited eight-episode run under the title “Justified: City Primeval.” From a logistical standpoint, bringing back TV’s coolest lawman makes sense: “Justified,” which featured mostly stand-alone, season-long arcs during its excellent six-season run, is perfectly suited to one-off limited series. It’s also a beloved show that balances comedy and drama well, has the respect of many in Hollywood and understands the unique narrative value of place in a way that many series do not.

Whether “Justified: City Primeval” is able to recapture the magic of the original run is yet to be seen, but as our reunion with Raylan is upon us,...

‘Justified: City Primeval’ Star Vivian Olyphant ‘I’m Not Paying Much Attention’ to Nepo Baby Discussion
Image
Note: This interview was conducted before the actors’ strike began

“Justified” star Timothy Olyphant’s 20-year-old daughter Vivian makes her acting debut in the series revival “Justified: City Primeval,” which premieres Tuesday on FX and hits Hulu on Wednesday.

She plays Raylan Givens’ daughter Willa, who is stuck in Detroit with her father after a judge is murdered. Vivian talked to TheWrap about acting with her dad, why she never watched the original series and why she doesn’t let the “Nepo baby” discourse get to her.

TheWrap: Did you watch the original “Justified” series?

Vivian Olyphant: I never did, but I did visit the set. But, I was eight when the show ended. And by the time I was allowed to watch the show, I think that was a time where I stopped caring about my dad.

Justified's Timothy Olyphant On City Primeval Return: ‘The Hat Still Fits’
Image
Justified: City Primeval star Timothy Olyphant opens up about returning as Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens in the upcoming limited series.

Speaking with Uproxx, Olyphant revealed that he had no trouble slipping back into character for City Primeval despite the eight-year gap between the original and sequel series. "You just put the shoes on and off you go. Put the shoes on. The hat still fits," Olyphant said. The actor also disclosed that he was always itching to reprise his role as Givens again. "My memory is, and I realize that’s not that reliable, but my memory is I said way back when that I’d be interested in coming back, getting the gang together again after some time," he explained. "But that perhaps we needed some time just to free us up creatively."

‘Justified: City Primeval’ Is a Shrewd Extension of the Original and a Slick Story All Its Own
Image
The original “Justified,” developed by Graham Yost from Elmore Leonard’s book, “Fire in the Hole,” stands the test of time for several reasons. Its case-per-season approach makes each new investigation as accessible as it is arresting. Its star, U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant), is a classic cowboy in a modern world, not always bucking against the trends but still stubbornly adhering to his own sense of right and wrong. Olyphant’s soft drawl and charming fortitude — peppered with terse quips and curt advice — go a long way on their own, though any assessment of “Justified” must give equal weight to Boyd Crowder, embodied with iconic verbosity and verve by the great Walton Goggins.

For six seasons, “Justified” thrived as a two-hander; it wasn’t that Raylan and Boyd were always on opposite sides, so much as their lives ran in such consistent parallel to one another that...

‘Justified’ and Raylan Givens Enter a New Era of Policing
Image
In the first episode of the new miniseries Justified: City Primeval, our old friend Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) — the quick-drawing, fast-talking, Stetson-wearing U.S. marshal from Harlan, Kentucky — is called to testify about a fugitive he brought back to Detroit. Defense attorney Carolyn Wilder (Aunjanue Ellis) calls him out for having threatened to put her client in the trunk of a car if he didn’t behave. This is the kind of stunt Raylan pulled all the time during the original run of Justified, and we found it charming as all get-out back then.

‘Justified: City Primeval’ Review: Timothy Olyphant in an FX Sequel Series That Stands on Its Own Two Feet
Image
Whether it’s Hollywood’s inability to spawn new blockbuster icons or the entertainment industry’s commitment to placating an audience with an insatiable desire for nostalgia, the summer of 2023 has taken on a distinct Twilight-of-the-Action-Gods feeling.

The season started with Arnold Schwarzenegger doing the streaming equivalent of a ’90s Arnold Schwarzenegger classic, now with meditations on fatherhood and approaching retirement, in Netflix’s Fubar. Then Harrison Ford added meditations on godfatherhood and approaching retirement in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. The only reason Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One isn’t about fatherhood and approaching retirement is a fear that if Tom Cruise were ever to actually confront, or even address, his own aging, the metaphorical dream factory would implode.

Into this fray of graying tough guy icons strides Timothy Olyphant’s Raylan Givens. For 78 episodes on FX’s Justified, Raylan Givens was a throwback personification of anger-fueled masculinity,...

Justified: City Primeval Review: Timothy Olyphant’s Return as Raylan Givens Hits the Bull’s-Eye
Image
“There are only two kinds of guys out in the street chasing bad guys at your age — ones who got passed over for ‘the big chair,’ and the ones who just love it so much they’re gonna have to be dragged off. Only question is will they be breathing when it happens.”

That observation-slash-threat comes courtesy of Raylan Givens’ latest formidable foe, Clement Mansell aka “The Oklahoma Wildman,” in the FX limited series Justified: City Primeval. But it also speaks to the fact that the steely-eyed U.S. Marshal indeed cannot seem to stop doing that thing he does so well.

Justified: City Primeval TV Review
Image
Plot: Having left the hollers of Kentucky 15 years ago, Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) now lives in Miami, a walking anachronism balancing his life as a U.S. Marshal and part-time father of a 15-year-old girl. His hair is grayer, his hat is dirtier, and the road in front of him is suddenly a lot shorter than the road behind. A chance encounter on a desolate Florida highway sends him to Detroit. There he crosses paths with Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook), aka The Oklahoma Wildman, a violent, sociopathic desperado who’s already slipped through the fingers of Detroit’s finest once and aims to do so again.

Review: Justified is one of the best television series of the last twenty years. Boasting a stellar leading turn from Timothy Olyphant and a great performance from Walton Goggins, the FX series aired from 2010 to 2015 and crossed over with the Out of Sight-inspired series...

‘Justified: City Primeval’ Review: Timothy Olyphant Reclaims the Stetson Hat for Triumphant Elmore Leonard Adaptation
Image
The new FX limited series “Justified: City Primeval” is a fish-out-of-water story featuring a long, lanky fish in a Stetson hat. His name is Raylan Givens, and you might know him from “Justified,” the FX crime series that made itself at home in the hollers of Kentucky among white supremacists and other Southern miscreants from 2010 to 2015. Played by Timothy Olyphant with a smooth gait and seen-it-all demeanor, Deputy U.S. Marshal Givens, created by the unmatchable crime fiction writer Elmore Leonard, now finds himself in Detroit, where a maniac is sowing chaos, a dirty judge has been murdered and the rules of engagement are as wild as the West ever was.

But if Raylan is new to the criminal ways of Motor City, Leonard, who died in 2013, most certainly wasn’t. This was his home, and the setting for much of his most memorable work. He knew the crooks and the crooked cops,...

Justified: City Primeval trailer pits Raylan Givens against a ruthless killer
Timothy Olyphant in Justified: City Primeval (2023)
