Baz Luhrmann’s movie Elvis became a smash hit. Despite this, it wasn’t the first or only movie with a similar style or subject matter. Here are a few films you might want to watch if you loved the movie.
Elvis Presley | Gab Archive / Contributor 5. ‘The King’
Luhrmann’s Elvis is celebratory in many ways. It also portrays the subject of Elvis and race in the most positive light possible. That’s to be expected given that the film was produced by Priscilla Presley.
The King is a documentary that looks at Elvis and race from a more critical perspective. It uses the “Can’t Help Falling in Love” singer’s legacy as a metaphor for the history of the United States. It features interviews with many notable figures, including Van Jones, Chuck D from Public Enemy, and others. The King didn’t get much attention upon release, but it...

It took 36 hours for producer Gail Berman to get to the Elvis set in September of 2020. It was a mini-odyssey that involved flying from Los Angeles to New York and then through Dubai and on to Brisbane, Australia, where she had to quarantine for two weeks due to then-strict Covid-19 protocols. But the wait didn’t bother Berman, since by then she had been trying to get the movie made for more than a decade and had already endured a production shutdown due to a global pandemic that saw one of the film’s leads become the early face of the then-nascent coronavirus. (More on that later.)
“My kids used to like to call it my hobby,” says Berman, who developed the project in between her already prolific day jobs developing and producing television shows through Fox-based The Jackal Group, which she co-founded. It was with that hard-earned patience that...

Founded in 1981 by the American Film Marketing Association, which was headed by the late producer Andy Vajna, the American Film Market in its early years featured a lot of genre fare looking to sell VHS video rights abroad. But with 1984’s Amadeus, AFM also proved that it could be a home for more prestige titles — and few of its offerings would strike a more prestigious tone than Milos Forman’s award-winning film about the rivalry between the Austrian court composer Antonio Salieri and the upstart musical genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Record executive and film producer Saul Zaentz was the driving force behind the production. Kesha to Headline Stonewall Day
The legendary Pride event will take place on Friday, June 24, outside of the Stonewall Inn in New York City. Launched in 2018, Stonewall Day is a national day of awareness to commemorate the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Riots.

Condragulations are in order for Irish presenter Graham Norton, who’s set to host “Queen of the Universe,” a new unscripted international drag queen singing competition, Variety can reveal.
Produced by “RuPaul’s Drag Race” producers World of Wonder, the Eurovision-style series finds countries going head to head with their top drag queens putting their real singing voices to the test (no lip synching here!).
Early promotional materials for the show teased: “High heels, high octaves, high competition — this drag queen singing competition will blow your wig off.” Interestingly, drag has been a recurring sight on the Eurovision stage, with Austria’s Conchita Wurst taking the crown in 2014 with her song “Rise Like a Phoenix.”
Norton, the beloved host of long-running, star-studded talk show “The Graham Norton Show,” is no stranger to the “Drag Race” world, having judged the BBC’s enormously successful “RuPaul’s Drag Race U.K.” alongside RuPaul,...

Eurovision’s most famous winner is undoubtedly Abba, who managed to take their win in 1974 for “Waterloo,” and build it into international stardom. Another famous winner is Celine Dion, who rose to stardom through Eurovision before “My Heart Will Go On” ensured her everlasting fame.
Eurovision’s first big song came from Italian singer Domenico Modguno back in 1958. The song was called “Volare,” and though it didn’t win, it reached the top of the U.S. Billboard charts for five weeks and won two Grammys. David Bowie, Frank Sinatra, and Andrea Bocelli are among the singers who have put their own spin on the song.
In 2014, Eurovision made headlines again when LGBT star Conchita Wurst claimed victory for Austria. Conchita’s win was attacked by Russian conservatives as a sign that the European Union would lead to moral corruption in Russia, but that didn’t stop Conchita from becoming...

Eurodance band Vengaboys like to "focus on their old hits" rather than new songs.
In an interview to website MusicFeeds, the "We're going to Ibiza" hitmakers spoke about their music process and why they still like singing their old hit songs everytime.
"Well, we go to the studio sometimes. Sometimes we don't; sometimes we do. We fool around and do some new stuff, but it never really gets to something that's perfect," Kim Sasabone said about the band that also consists of Denise Post-Van Rijswijk, Robin Pors and Donny Latupeiris.
"So that's why we keep on focusing on those old hits because we noticed, after performing for all these years, like, since we've come back in 2006, we released a couple of songs, but people want to hear mainly our old songs. So the last couple of years, we are more focusing on that."

The 22nd International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2018) returns to Amsterdam, July 23-27, for the first time in a quarter century and to Europe for the first time since 2010.
The biennial conference, launched in 1985 at the peak of the AIDS epidemic, is the premier gathering for advocates, policy makers, Ngo representatives, researchers, journalists, and people living with HIV, who will hear about and discuss the progress and challenges of ending HIV. It is organized by the International AIDS Society, the world’s leading independent association of HIV professionals.
The conference’s theme is “Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges.” It speaks to the need to more effectively reach key populations in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East/North Africa region, where the epidemic is growing, and to promote responses tailored to the needs of particularly vulnerable communities, including sex workers, transgender individuals, people who inject drugs, women and girls, and young people.

Sweden won its sixth Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday night, as Mans Zelmerlow, with his pop song "Heroes," beat out Russia's Polina Gagarina, who performed an English-language song called "A Million Voices." Zelmerlow's performance during the event's 60th anniversary edition in Vienna, Austria included animated visuals. Austria hosted the event, under the motto "Building Bridges" after drag queen Conchita Wurst won last year's competition. Overall, a record 27 countries participated in the finals. Among them was Australia, which was invited to compete, despite being nowhere near Europe. The country had in the past asked if it could participate,

Graham Norton has joked that while there will be a lot of ballads on Eurovision this year, they will be "differently awful".
Speaking ahead of hosting the BAFTA Television Awards this weekend, Norton explained that he tries to stay away from focusing too much on Eurovision until the week of the competition.
"You know the sea in Britain or Ireland where you just have to get in - just get in, don't paddle around?" he said. "I'm a bit like that with Eurovision.
"I do nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing and then on about the Thursday just immerse myself in it and think about nothing else, do nothing else, until the Saturday and watch all the dress rehearsals and semi-finals and listen to the songs endlessly."
He added: "It will be interesting this year. I think it's going to be quite a straight contest - Austria are taking it quite seriously,...

America’s Next Bearded Lady?
In a RuPaul’s Drag Race first, the queens are tasked with donning beards on the runway. A play on the bearded lady -- a style of drag made popular by Eurovision Song Contest 2014 winner Conchita Wurst -- the challenge is an unexpected move for the show that has increasingly become about serving fish (aka looking as feminine as possible).
News: For 'RuPaul's Drag Race' Mainstream Is Jumping the Shark
While the challenge is a bold move that surely will get fans talking, it’s not the first time a beard has walked the runway. During season six, Milk caused a stir when she sported silver, wizardly facial hair. (Though, the drag queen also donned a pregnancy belly and a Pinocchio nose.) “It’s also about being remembered,” Milk told Out.com about the eccentric looks he wore on the show.

The “Baywatch” actress appears in the “Unlikely Icon” category along with North West, Gigi Hadid and Conchita Wurst, and honestly she looks pretty great.
Pamela’s good fortune comes just after her appearances in the Palm Beach circular No Tofu, and earlier this year she posed in her birthday suit for Purple magazine.
Additionally, Ms. Anderson withdrew her divorce petition from Rick Solomon in August, so things are looking up for the former Mrs. Tommy Lee.

Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort bring John Green's star-crossed lovers to life in this affecting adaptation
If there’s one thing The Fault In Our Stars gets so very right, is that it imitates the source material perfectly. The book – of the same name, written by the deeply profound John Green – is one of the biggest young adult novels (outside the sci-fi/dystopia bracket) of the last few years. She paired the dress with giant black earrings, some messy hair and a bold pink lip. The annual charity fundraiser benefits the fight against HIV/AIDS, with Love taking part in the event's fashion show.Other celebrity attendees included Kesha, Bill Clinton, Ricky Martin and Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst, making for one very random guest list.Which of Love's outfits do you like better? Ronan Keating has dismissed reports that he will be appearing in the next series of Celebrity Big Brother.
The Boyzone star took to Twitter amid mounting speculation that he would follow his bandmate Keith Duffy into the famous compound.

While the new series of Celebrity Big Brother won't begin until this summer's 'civilian' version has ended, rumours about who could be making their way into the Borehamwood bungalow have been circulating for some time.
Among the famous faces rumoured to be packing their bags are George Gilbey from Gogglebox,...

Hedwig and the Angry Inch is the hottest ticket on Broadway right now, but John Cameron Mitchell recalls a frosty reception when he appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman to promote the original run of the play fifteen years ago. “And then on David Letterman’s show, we did the soundcheck and there was a voice from the booth that said, ‘Could you please not remove your wig during the song?’ … So I removed it after, and they cut it off, they wanted people to think I was a woman.
