Sorry, Andy Muschietti, But Women Did Love The Flash and One Popular TV Show Proved It

Quick Links The CW's Flash Empowered Women The CW's Flash Stuck to the Core Identity The Flash Movie Had Other Detrimental Baggage

When The Flash bombed at the box office in 2023, not too many people were surprised. For starters, Ezra Miller came into the film with a lot of personal baggage from his personal life. It didn't help that the movie was in developmental hell for some time, changing directors and stalling production occasionally.

Now, the director, Andy Muschietti, has laid out some reasons why he thinks his movie was destined for failure. Shockingly, he stated that people -- especially women -- didn't care for the character, so they'd never go to theaters. However, there are so many flaws with that argument, along with other statements he has made about the movie tanking. In fact, one very popular DC TV show that lasted nine seasons immediately invalidates his point about...

Disney's Percy Jackson Show Needs To Up The Stakes Of Its Monster Encounters In Season 2
Image
Percy Jackson & the Olympians should make monster encounters more suspenseful by keeping the heroes in the dark about who they're facing. It's important for the show to prioritize accuracy from the books to maintain the dramatic stakes and tension in season 2. The young age of the characters in Percy Jackson series should be reflected in their vulnerability and susceptibility to being tricked by monsters.

Disney+'s Percy Jackson and the Olympians has generally been well-received, but the series can improve when it comes to the heroes encountering monsters and other villains. Season 1 sees Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell), Annabeth Chase (Leah Jeffries), and Grover Underwood (Aryan Simhadri) crossing paths with many iconic monsters from Greek mythology, including Medusa (Jessica Parker Kennedy), Echidna (Suzanne Cryer), and Cerberus. The series adapted the versions of these monsters from The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.

How Old The Flash TV Show Cast Was Compared To Their Characters
Image
Grant Gustin played Barry Allen on The Flash, closely resembling the energetic hero with self-doubt. Age gaps between actors & characters were minimal on Team Flash, making negligible impact on the show. Jessica Parker Kennedy had the largest age gap, playing Nora West-Allen, appearing convincingly young.

The popular Arrowverse series, The Flash, proved the most popular show from that universe, with the characters growing into their roles over the nine-season run. While Arrow kicked off the Arrowverse in 2012, The Flash was the show that made this set of stories more engaging and accessible for audiences. Debuting in 2014, The Flash provided a much more uplifting, enthusiastic, and bright hero for the Arrowverse in Grant Gustin's Barry Allen, and his alter ego superhero identity, the Flash.

The series focused on a slightly younger group than Arrow, with the hero and his allies being early in their careers, and generally more youthful and energetic than Oliver Queen and company.

I'll Never Forgive The CW For Canceling Its Best Vampire Diaries Replacement
Image
The CW missed a big opportunity with "The Secret Circle" as a potential replacement for "The Vampire Diaries." Consistency is key for new shows to succeed, but "The Secret Circle" faced hiatuses that hurt its momentum. With captivating visuals and exciting storylines, "The Secret Circle" had the potential to surpass "The Vampire Diaries."

The Vampire Diaries was a massive hit for The CW, but I'll never forget the network's controversial decision to cancel its best replacement. The series in question had a fantastic cast comprising well-known names and newer actors, who all came together to craft a great show. For much of the time this series was on the air, it was better than The Vampire Diaries. Both shows had many of the same people working behind the scenes, so it felt like The CW wanted to replicate the popularity of The Vampire Diaries.

It's a shame it didn't get a big enough chance.

Black Sails Ending, Explained: Why Did It End Like That?
Image
Black Sails, a prequel to Treasure Island, blends history and fiction in a gripping tale of pirates and treasure quests. The series finale sees Flint and Silver unite against all odds, choosing love over war in a dramatic conclusion. Creator Jon Steinberg emphasizes the importance of the unlikely bond between Flint and Silver, driving the story's closure.

Conceived as a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic Treasure Island novel, Black Sails ran on the Starz network for four seasons between 2014 and 2017 before concluding on an epic note. Blending historical facts with fictional characters, the story follows Captain James Flint (Toby Stephens) and his pirate crew as they attempt to find lost treasure aboard the sunken Urca de Lima cargo ship. As Flint's search brings him closer to enriching his mates, an all-out war between the Spanish and British Empire takes place to control the Caribbean.

Under-the-Radar 4-Season Historical Epic Climbs Netflix's US Top 10 Chart After Ending 7 Years Ago
Image
Black Sails is a Netflix hit in the U.S., ranking ninth on the most-watched English-language shows chart for the week. This streaming success has come seven years after the Starz show originally went off the air. This success may be attributed to the cast members landing prominent roles in popular streaming shows post-Black Sails.

Black Sails has become a Netflix hit. The show, which premiered on Starz in 2014, is a prequel to the iconic 1883 novel Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, incorporating many real-life pirates of the early 1700s into the story including Blackbeard, Jack Rackham, Charles Vane, and Anne Bonny. The show, which was co-created by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine (who would later collaborate on FX's Jeff Bridges show The Old Man), eventually ran for four seasons and 38 total episodes before going off the air in April 2017.

Why Black Sails Season 5 Isn't Happening & What It Would've Been About
Image
Black Sails season 4 was the last due to the co-creators' planned ending, but the series finale seemingly set up potential spinoffs. The co-creators considered a season 5 based on Treasure Island but decided to keep the show and book separate. There are no plans for a Black Sails continuation.

While Black Sails season 5 won't be setting sail anytime soon (seeing as Starz ended the show after season 4), here's what it could have been about. Black Sails is an epic historical adventure series made by Starz and follows the bloody misadventures of a crew of pirates. The show also acts as a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, providing an origin story for Long John Silver. The first season of Black Sails focused on a treasure hunt, with later seasons following the battle for control of New Providence between the pirates and the British Empire.

While the show could be dark and violent,...

How Historically Accurate Is Black Sails?
Image
Black Sails combines fact and fiction to create a gripping show rooted in the Golden Age of Piracy. Real-life pirates like Blackbeard and Anne Bonny are portrayed accurately, while some events have been fictionalized. The series blends historical facts with imaginary stories, making it a captivating portrayal of piracy in the 1800s.

Conceived as a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's 1883 novel Treasure Island, Black Sails is a historical adventure series on the Starz Network from 2014 to 2017. Set in the early 1800s during the Golden Age of Piracy, the four-season tale follows various real-life pirates and seafarers who interact with fictional characters dwelling on New Providence island in the Bahamas. Apart from chronicling the history of piracy, the inciting event of the series concerns the hunt for treasure aboard a Spanish ship called the Urca de Lima, prompting a war for control between the Spanish and British Empire.

Is ‘Black Sails’ Coming to Netflix? Star Toby Stephens Says ‘the More People Enjoy It, the Better’

Black Sails premiered 10 years ago today on Starz. The pirate drama built a strong fan base over the course of its four seasons, one that’s still singing its praises today. In December, it was said that Black Sails would stream on Netflix starting January 1, 2024. As of the time of publication, it’s still not available on the streamer, causing confusion among fans. But star Toby Stephens is excited by the prospect nonetheless. Black Sails is a prequel set 20 years before the events of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel Treasure Island. It stars Stephens as Captain Flint, known throughout the West Indies for being the most brilliant, most feared of all the Golden Age pirates. It also stars Jessica Parker Kennedy as the sharp and seductive Max. Percy Jackson's Hades Actor Creates A Sad Reunion For Critically Acclaimed War Drama From Last Year
Image
Warning! This article contains minor spoilers for Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1, episode 7!

Jay Duplass and Lance Reddick, who both appear on Percy Jackson and the Olympians, previously starred together in the 2023 movie The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, showcasing their excellent chemistry. The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, the final film directed by William Friedkin, received critical acclaim with a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes, solidifying the talent of Duplass and Reddick. Unfortunately, Reddick's passing marks the end of their collaborations, making Percy Jackson their final project together, adding a sense of nostalgia to their on-screen reunion.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Hades actor, Jay Duplass, previously worked with another major Greek god star from the show, creating a subtle reunion for a 2023 military drama movie. Percy Jackson season 1’s cast includes major guest stars for some of its most important roles, with the show recruiting several Hollywood veterans for its Greek gods and mythological creatures.

Actresses like Jessica Parker Kennedy, Kathryn Newton, and Sadie Sink have the ability to portray Circe's strongest emotions and character traits. Nina Dobrev and Jenna Ortega could potentially play the role of Circe.

Bestselling-author Madeline Miller is famous for two young adult novels which are both reimaginings of Greek myths. Her first novel, The Song of Achilles, depicts the events leading up to and during the Trojan War from the perspective of Achilles' lover Patroclus. Miller's second novel Circe follows the title character, a witch who is most famous for her brief encounter with Odysseus in The Odyssey. However, Miller's novel depicts a much more nuanced version of Circe. Circe is raised in the patriarchal setting of her father Helios' house, where everyone is at the mercy of the gods' whims.

Percy Jackson: Medusa Actor Shares Issues She Had With Special Effects
Image
Jessica Parker Kennedy found filming the special effects for Medusa in Percy Jackson and the Olympians to be a major CGI challenge. Aryan Simhadri, who plays Grover, will also have to deal with discomfort from special effects, such as wearing a mo-cap suit for his satyr character. Filming in the Underworld and working with CGI sets can be difficult for both actors and VFX teams, as there are no practical elements to ground the scenes.

Jessica Parker Kennedy, who plays Medusa in the Disney+ show Percy Jackson and the Olympians, didn't have much fun with the show's special effects. The fantasy elements of the series require a lot of special effects. Percy Jackson and the Olympians follows the titular character as he learns that his absent father is actually a Greek god, and he gets a crash course in his demigod heritage. Each season of the series is expected to...

Before 'Percy Jackson,' Jessica Parker Kennedy Ruled 'Black Sails'
Image
We are now halfway through Disney+'s new adaptation of Percy Jackson and the Olympians after the fans rejected the original two film adaptations over a decade ago. This show is getting much more attention and is certainly the better adaptation for the fans of the book series. In its third episode, titled "We Visit the Garden Gnome Emporium," we meet the monster Medusa while Percy (Walker Scobell), Annabeth (Leah Sava Jeffries), and Grover (Aryan Simhadri) are on the run from Alecto (Megan Mullally). This time Medusa is not played by Uma Thurman, like in the original films, but Jessica Parker Kennedy, who you might know from the hit Starz original Black Sails.

Athena's Percy Jackson Episode 4 Role Helps Prove Season 1's Secret Villain Right
Image
Medusa's portrayal in Percy Jackson challenges Annabeth's belief in Athena and highlights their shared experience of being wronged. Athena's reaction to receiving Medusa's head exposes her flawed nature and shows the gods' key failures. Athena's treatment of Annabeth reinforces one character's late-season argument about the gods' unfitness to rule.

Known as the Goddess of Wisdom, Athena's not-so-gracious reaction to her demigod daughter in Percy Jackson and the Olympians' fourth episode actually helps prove season 1's secret "villain" right. In Percy Jackson season 1, episode 3, the show's titular demigod (Walker Scobell) and his companions, fellow demigod Annabeth Chase (Leah Jeffries), and the satyr protector Grover Underwood (Aryan Simhadri) stumble upon Medusa's (Jessica Parker Kennedy) Garden Gnome Emporium. Even though her domain is littered with stone statues of her past victims, Percy Jackson's Medusa changes the Greek myth's story, painting the gorgon as a survivor who was wronged by Athena and Poseidon — Annabeth and Percy's respective parents.

Percy Jackson episode 4 leaves a lingering mystery about Echidna's fate, not answered in the books, as her whereabouts after the battle with Percy remain unknown. Echidna's disappearance raises curiosity due to her role as the Mother of All Monsters, and her connection to the major villain Typhon suggests a possible return in future seasons of the show. Disney’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1, episode 4 concludes with a lingering question about Echidna that fails to solve a 19-year-old mystery from the book series. While the Disney+ TV show is incredibly faithful to the...

Disney's Percy Jackson Show Perfectly Captured Percy & Annabeth's Relationship With 1 Scene
Image
The Disney+ show gradually develops Percy and Annabeth's dynamic, unlike the 2010 movie adaptation. The show cleverly utilizes Greek mythology to shape the relationships and backstories of the demigods. Percy and Annabeth's relationship follows a slow-burn, gradually evolving from friendship to romance throughout Rick Riordan's books.

Disney's Percy Jackson & the Olympians show perfectly captured Percy (Walker Scobell) and Annabeth's (Leah Jeffries) relationship in a single scene in the third outing. In episode 3, "We Visit the Garden Gnome Emporium," the titular hero sets off on his quest to save his mother and stop the looming war between Olympus' gods. Annabeth Chase and Grover Underwood (Aryan Simhadri), two other key members of Percy Jackson's cast of characters, join the 12-year-old demigod on his journey, and, in doing so, get to know each other a bit better. Unlike the 2010 Percy Jackson movie, the show builds Percy and Annabeth's dynamic at a more gradual pace.

What “Maia” Means: Why It Makes Luke’s Shoes Grow Wings In Percy Jackson Episode 3
Image
Warning! This article contains spoilers for Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1, episode 3!

Percy receives magical shoes from Luke, which can make the wearer fly, adding to the list of magical items encountered on his quest. The command to make the shoes fly is "Maia," which pays homage to Hermes' mother in Greek mythology. The significance of the shoes and their command paying tribute to Hermes' mother highlights the hypocrisy of the Greek gods and Hermes' absence as a father to his own children.

Luke Castellan gives Percy a pair of shoes that grow wings when he says “Maia,” which has a deeper Hermes-related meaning in Percy Jackson and the Olympians. As Percy sets off on his quest in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1, episode 3, “We Visit the Garden Gnome Emporium,” Hermes’ demigod son Luke gifts him a pair of magical shoes disguised as a pair of red Converse hi-tops,...

Lin Manuel-Miranda is finally in the room where Percy Jackson and the Olympians happened, and its creators love what he brings to the series.

Percy Jackson Series Changes Percy’s Prophecy for the Better
Image
This article contains spoilers for Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 3.

In the world of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, prophecies are a big deal. The oracle who resides at Camp Half-Blood doesn’t just give them out willy nilly, they are given to those that fate has deemed worthy. For the demigods of Camp Half-Blood, a prophecy typically signals the beginning of a quest, and the chance to prove oneself in the eyes of their deified parent.

Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell) receives his first prophecy not long after he first arrives at Camp Half-Blood. He, Annabeth Chase (Leah Sava Jeffries), and Grover Underwood (Aryan Simhadri) are tasked with retrieving Zeus’ missing lightning bolt before the Summer Solstice and stopping an impending war between the gods. Before they set off, Percy receives valuable insight from the Oracle, though it’s not clear what parts of the prophecy mean.

How ‘Percy Jackson’ Updated the Book’s Medusa Storyline to Get Closer to the Original Myth: ‘She Was a Victim of Rape’
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for “We Visit the Garden Gnome Emporium,” Episode 3 of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians.”

This story also contains a discussion of sexual assault.

For fans of Rick Riordan’s “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” books, Medusa represents one of Percy’s first big victories: After being tricked into spending time with “Aunty Em,” he beheads the snake-haired woman, and her cursed, dead eyeballs are later used to turn another enemy into stone.

But for those with a deeper knowledge of Greek mythology, and for many women, Medusa is a symbol of something darker.

In many tellings of the original myth, Medusa is a human woman who takes a vow of celibacy out of devotion to Athena, the goddess of wisdom. However, Medusa eventually enters a relationship with sea god Poseidon that becomes sexual one night. Some interpretations, beginning with the Roman poet Ovid’s,...

The first episode will also be available on Hulu through January, which is when the eight-episode first season will wrap up — yet another sign that Disney is hoping to get as many eyes on the series as possible.

Season 1 follows the events from the first of five books by Rick Riordan with the intention that the series will comprise five seasons, one for each of the novels.
