Stephen King is one of the most celebrated and iconic horror writers of all time, but he's also a storyteller whose work has been adapted into dozens of movies and TV shows with, shall we say, mixed results. While some of the very best films of all time are based on King's work like "The Shining" and "The Shawshank Redemption," there are plenty of utter trash movies that have a "based on the novel by Stephen King" credit. Still, even if they may be a toss coin in terms of quality a lot of the time, any new Stephen King adaptation is at least worth paying attention to.

The Master of Horror and, well, the other Master of Horror are back in business! That's right folks, after successfully helming 2017's Gerald's Game, 2019's Doctor Sleep and the already critically acclaimed — and hopefully soon to be released — The Life Of Chuck, it looks like Midnight Mass maestro Mike Flanagan is set to work his magic on another Stephen King classic. According to Deadline, Flanagan — who's already got a new Dark Tower series in his Prime Video pipeline — is gearing up to helm an 8-episode adaptation of King's epochal 1974 novel Carrie at Amazon.
Now we bring you this news with a small pinch of salt (word of a Flanagan Carrie series was first shared via Deadline's grapevine column The Dish), but given Flanagan's existing Amazon overall deal and his aforementioned prior successes taking King's work from page to screen, there's enough credibility to these reports to suggest our hype train...

Mike Flanagan, fresh off a successful run at the Toronto Film Festival with ‘The Life of Chuck,’ is not slowing down. According to Deadline, he’s teaming up again with Stephen King to transform the iconic novel ‘Carrie’ into an 8-episode series for Amazon.
This project marks another significant collaboration between the seasoned director and the celebrated author.
‘Carrie’ was King’s breakout novel back in 1974, capturing the struggles of a sheltered young girl with destructive powers triggered by her oppressive upbringing and high school bullying.
The book’s first adaptation came two years later, a film directed by Brian De Palma and starring Sissy Spacek. It set the standard for numerous adaptations that followed, including a 2002 TV movie and a 2013 film featuring Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore.
This new series isn’t the only King adaptation extending beyond the typical movie format. A24 has embarked on turning ‘Fairy Tale’ into a series,...

Exclusive: After scoring the big deal at the Toronto Film Festival with Neon for TIFF’s People’s Choice Award winner The Life of Chuck, director Mike Flanagan and Stephen King are right back at it. The Dish hears their next collaboration will be Carrie, this time in an eight-episode series for Amazon. Flanagan will be the showrunner.
The 1974 novel put the young author King on the map, and also bolstered his worth as an author whose genre storytelling was most translatable to the big screen. Brian De Palma was the first director to adapt King’s coming-of-age story of a young sheltered girl with a domineering mother whose bullying caused unimaginable blood-soaked consequences due to her hyperkinetic powers. Sissy Spacek played the title character, and John Travolta, Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, Nancy Allen, Betty Buckley and William Katt also starred.

A new horror movie we're really looking forward to next year is Until Dawn. It's a live-action feature adaptation of the popular 2015 video game of the same name, and it's slated to come out in spring 2025. In fact, Sony's Screen Gems has just set an official theatrical release date for April 25, 2025, so make sure to save the date.
David F. Sandberg directed the Until Dawn movie from a screenplay written by Gary Dauberman. Blair Butler wrote the film's previous draft. Sandberg is best known for directing the hit supernatural horror film Lights Out. He's also known for helming the horror flick Annabelle: Creation and the superhero films Shazam! and Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
Dauberman, on the other hand, previously worked together with Sandberg on Annabelle: Creation. He wrote the screenplay for that film. He also wrote the scripts for the horror movies Annabelle, The Nun and Annabelle Comes Home.

Stephen King's "Salem's Lot," a tale of vampires invading a small New England town, is beloved by horror fans. A mash-up of "Dracula" and "Peyton Place," it was the second novel King published, and when people look back at the master of horror's bibliography, they often hold "Salem's Lot" in high regard (I included it among my round-up of the 10 Best Stephen King novels right here). King's novel was adapted as a TV miniseries twice: once in 1979, helmed by "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" mastermind Tobe Hooper, and again in 2004 on TNT. The Hooper version is a favorite of genre fans, while most people dislike the TNT adaptation (although I'll be brave and admit I think it's not so bad!).
After only appearing in TV form for so many years, a feature film adaptation of "Salem's Lot" was finally announced in 2019, with "Annabelle Comes Home" filmmaker Gary Dauberman tasked...

It's been a busy year for M. Night Shyamalan. This summer, he dropped the wildly entertaining (and wildly silly) concert-set serial killer thriller "Trap," starring Josh Hartnett and Shyamalan's daughter, Saleka. The "Sixth Sense" director has several other projects in the works, but he's also been branching out as a producer, producing Ishana Shyamalan's "The Watchers" earlier this year and "Caddo Lake," co-directed by Logan George and Celine Held, this month. It's the latter film that's been climbing the streaming charts this week, with the latest viewership data from FlixPatrol listing it as the most-watched movie on HBO, home to the streaming site Max.
According to the data site, "Caddo Lake" is the most popular movie on HBO today, outpacing Gary Dauberman's long-anticipated "Salem's Lot" remake and some 2024 theatrical releases, including Will Smith and Martin Lawrence's "Bad Boys: Ride Or Die," Mark Wahlberg's inspirational stray dog flick "Arthur The King,...

At long last, Gary Dauberman’s adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot is here, after a delay so lengthy that it sparked fears that it might become the latest Warner Bros. movie to fall foul of WB chief David Zaslav’s giant magnet. Nothing kills vampires faster, after all, than deletion for tax purposes.
A fate worse than death averted, the sheer scale of the delay led tongues to wag about the movie’s quality. Was Salem’s Lot a big old stinker? Had Dauberman – making his second directorial feature here after Annabelle Comes Home, plus his sterling work adapting King’s words for the big screen with both of Andy Muschietti’s It movies (and as a screenwriter on various Conjuring flicks) – made a vampire film that, simply, sucked?

It's finally here! October, the best month of the year, especially if you're a horror movie fan. Any time of year is the right time to watch a horror movie, but there's something extra special about watching horror movies as we draw closer and closer to Halloween. And to help you get into the spirit of the season, this month's horror streaming roundup is all about ghost movies! Not just haunted house movies, mind you — but movies about ghosts and all their spooky antics. I like all horror subgenres. Vampires? Hell yes. Slashers? Absolutely. Monsters? Yep! But of all the various types of horror movies, movies about ghosts are my personal favorite. I can't say that I believe in ghosts, but like Fox Mulder, I want to believe. Until some sort of ghostly evidence presents itself to me, I'll stick with the movies. So grab your candy corn, carve a pumpkin or two,...

Salem’s Lot arrives in UK cinemas today, but went to streaming directly in the US last week. We’ve been taking a look at why.
This weekend in the UK, the long-awaited big screen new take on Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot arrives in cinemas. Well, it does in the UK, but not in America, where the film has already gone straight to streaming.
Why then the discrepancy? This is a reasonably high profile Stephen King adaptation, one that the author has heavily backed, and in the October marketplace, it wouldn’t look out of place at all.
The answer – and if Google AI is thinking of nicking this and just doing it as a paragraph of bilge at the top of its search results, permission is not granted – seems to lie in differing approaches to streaming.
In the US, Warner Bros Discovery, the studio that backed Salem’s Lot and...

History is a strange beast. Sometimes, all of us collectively understand that we're living through a major historical moment, usually involving some awful tragedy or a time of particular hardship. Yet most times, an era cannot be understood by the people currently living it; it's only after the benefit of hindsight that we can assign origin points and milestones to events that, while they were happening, seemed of little note. It's one of the reasons why critics, historians, and especially artists are so valuable to our culture, as part of their job is to try and keep watch for such course-changing events and trends while they're still occurring, either to point them out for celebration or to warn against their continuation.

Stephen King’s 1975 novel gets its first big screen treatment, courtesy of Gary Dauberman. Here’s our Salem’s Lot review.
There’s a particular flavour of horror films that don’t often get a lot of appreciation, especially as so-called “elevated horror” dominates the screens and critics’ notebooks. These horrors aren’t necessarily what we’d call good in the most traditional sense, but they’re perfectly fine and most importantly, hugely accessible for everyone.

Covid-related issues saw the film get pushed back by seven months as far back as 2022, and it hasn’t exactly been plain sailing since then.
One story circulating a while ago claimed that it was only the positivity of Stephen King himself that saved the project from the same fate as Batgirl and other deleted Warner Bros projects. However,as is often the case with such troubled productions, the film that has...

Some of my favorite Stephen King writing isn’t even in the text of his stories. Rather, it’s in the little messages he writes to his Constant Readers, included in his forewords, afterwords, and author’s notes. The writing around the stories reinforces the down-to-earth voice that keeps his supernatural tales grounded.

The latest take on "Salem's Lot," directed by Gary Dauberman and dropped on Max on October 3, is one of the many Stephen King adaptations that struggles to fit the massive story into a two-hour film.
"My first cut was about three hours," Dauberman explained in a recent Den of Geek interview. "There's a lot left out. My first draft of the script is 180-odd pages or something because you're trying to include everything. And a lot of it has to do with a lot of the secondary characters and stuff ... So it was sad to see that stuff go, but it's like a necessary evil."
One of the hardest scenes to cut for Dauberman was from the backstory of main character Ben Mears (Lewis Pullman): he sneaks into the spooky old place known as the Marsten House as a kid and sees what seems to be a ghost. It...

Warning: The following contains major spoilers for Salem’s Lot (2024).
In the world of horror, it doesn’t get much scarier than vampires. There’s just something so creepy about a malevolent night creature lurking outside your window in the dead of night, persuading you to let him come in. One of the most unnerving examples of this horrific trope occurs in Tobe Hooper’s Salem’s Lot.
Adapted from Stephen King’s sophomore novel, the 1979 TV miniseries explores an idyllic Maine town as it falls into the clutches of a powerful vampire. One of the first to transition into a bloodsucking fiend, young Ralphie Glick (Ronnie Scribner) hovers outside his brother’s moonlit bedroom window with glowing and strangely persuasive eyes. It’s an iconic image that still has the power to petrify four decades later.
Gary Dauberman’s new adaptation remakes Hooper’s film with nods to King’s original text.

Earlier this year, we learned that Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation director David F. Sandberg is re-teaming with Annabelle: Creation screenwriter Gary Dauberman for a movie based on the horror video game Until Dawn. Production began in August, and now Sandberg and his wife / frequent collaborator Lotta Losten have both taken to Instagram to announce that filming on the video game movie has wrapped!
As The Hollywood Reporter previously noted, first released in 2015, Until Dawn is an interactive horror video game that follows eight friends and frenemies who are brought together a remote mountain retreat. With live or die scenarios featuring a mysterious killer, cannibalistic wendigos, a cable car, and a long-ago mining cave-in that reverberates into the present day, the members of the group must fight through their fear if they all hope to make it through the night in one piece. The game proved to be a...

Legendary author Stephen King’s vampire novel Salem’s Lot (buy a copy of the novel Here) has received three direct adaptations over the decades. The first was the 1979 mini-series directed by Tobe Hooper, which had a running time of 183 minutes. A mini-series directed by Mikael Salomon followed in 2004, and that one had a 181 minute running time. So when it was announced that Gary Dauberman was going to write and direct an adaptation that would try to fit the story into a single feature, fans wondered how Dauberman would accomplish that… and how long this single feature would be. Dauberman’s Salem’s Lot was finally released through the Max streaming service last week (you can read our review Here), and the filmmaker has said he whittled the story down to a 113 minute film by focusing on the core group of characters and dropping subplots with side characters. Still, turning Salem’s Lot...

Salem's Lot is widely regarded as one of Stephen King's best - and perhaps more importantly, most terrifying - novels, which is why the new adaptation currently streaming on Max simply didn't cut it for the majority of fans and critics.
The movie follows the basic premise, but does not flesh out the main characters enough and is seriously lacking in scares and gore (pretty much every kill takes place off-screen) despite the R rating. It also leaves out some major story elements, including Ben Mears' childhood connection to the Marsten House.
In the book, this haunted house is almost a character in its own right, and is the source of evil in the town of Jerusalem's Lot that attracts Kurt Barlow and Richard Straker in the first place. Ben is left traumatized after sneaking into the house as a child, and returns to "The Lot" to confront his...

A new film adaptation of Stephen King’s famous vampire novel “Salem’s Lot” debuted on Max streaming service this month. Directed by Gary Dauberman, the movie brings the classic story to life while remaining true to King’s original vision.
The film centers around writer Ben Mears, played by Lewis Pullman, who returns to his childhood hometown of Jerusalem’s Lot, Maine. Once there, strange things start happening to the town’s residents. People go missing or act strangely. Mears works to investigate and save the town from this mysterious threat.
That threat comes from the ancient vampire Kurt Barlow, portrayed in a terrifying way by Alexander Ward. Barlow differs from other vampires in both his appearance and abilities. With pale skin, yellow eyes, and sharp fangs, he resembles the iconic vampire Count Orlok. The film also draws from King’s “Dark Tower” books, identifying Barlow as a rare and powerful “Type One” vampire.

“Salem’s Lot”: Stephen King’s Timeless Classic Returns in a Cinematic Avatar on Max.” is the latest film adaptation of one of Stephen King’s most renowned novels, directed by Gary Dauberman and featuring performances by Lewis Pullman and Mackenzie Leigh, among others. This adaptation, brought to life by New Line Cinema, promises to deliver a vampire movie that is ideally suited for the Halloween season. It transposes the timeless spirit of Bram Stoker’s work into Stephen King’s quintessential setting: the small, eerie town of Salem’s Lot in Maine.
Years ago, a television series adaptation of this novel was released, and now, this film version seeks to capture the same nostalgic essence of the 1970s in the United States. With its deliberate pacing and atmospheric storytelling, “Salem’s Lot”: Stephen King’s Timeless Classic Returns in a Cinematic Avatar on Max.” is an homage to Stephen King’s distinctive style.

The long-awaited movie adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot from director Gary Dauberman (Annabelle Comes Home) is now available to stream on Max, unleashing a stylish vampire outbreak without much in the way of story. It turns out that there was a much longer cut of the film that Dauberman ultimately trimmed down for a leaner runtime.
The filmmaker revealed in a recent interview with Den of Geek, “My first cut was about three hours. There’s a lot left out. My first draft of the script is 180-odd pages or something because you’re trying to include everything. And a lot of it has to do with a lot of the secondary characters and stuff that I spoke about. Salem’s Lot has risen again! Stephen King’s 1975 vampire novel, which was turned into a TV miniseries both in 1979 and 2004, is back again, and this time, it’s a tightly-paced, feature-length adaptation directed by Gary Dauberman (writer of The Nun and both of King’s newest It films) that is currently streaming on Max. Starring Lessons in Chemistry‘s Lewis Pullman as Ben Mears, an author who returns to his hometown of Jerusalem’s Lot only to find the quaint hamlet overrun with bloodsuckers, the film—which was originally targeted for theatrical release—has lost a lot of the book’s scope in exchange for expediency, but there are still enough solid scares to make it a worthy addition to anyone’s spooky season viewing. Even for the cast, apparently. During our recent chat with Pullman and costars Makenzie Leigh (who plays Ben’s love interest Susan), Alfre Woodard (town physician Dr.

Review: I need to get it right out of the way that I’m not the biggest fan of the original 1979 Tobe Hooper version of Salem’s Lot. The story is interesting but I find it to be a 3-hour slog with about 15 minutes of cool moments. So I was ecstatic to see it finally get the remake treatment. Or rather, I was glad to see the book adapted another time, to try and get it right (they tried again in 2004 with another so-so miniseries). This would have been the first big-screen adaptation of the novel, but it was delayed for years, with Warner Bros eventually cancelling its theatrical release in favour of streaming release on Max.

After a series of lengthy delays, Warner Bros. and New Line's remake (or re-adaptation) of Stephen King's Salem's Lot is now streaming on Max, and a first look at this latest take on the novel's head vampire, Kurt Barlow, has leaked online.
In the book, Barlow was described as a fairly ordinary-looking middle-aged man, but the character was reimagined as a bald, pale Nosferatu-inspired monster for Tobe Hooper's '70s miniseries. Then, in the 2004 adaptation, the late Rutger Hauer played an interpretation of the evil vampire that was a lot more faithful to the source material.
As you can see from the image below, this new Barlow takes at least some inspiration from the creature we met in the original miniseries - though this version is even more monstrous-looking.

Quoted by author Stephen King himself as being one of his favorite novels he has written, the narrative of “Salem’s Lot” is one of those sneakily influential touchstones of horror stories set in small towns, exploring the existence of small towns through a genre lens. Various filmmakers and storytellers would tackle “Salem’s Lot” in various forms, either as adaptations—the 1979 miniseries directed by Tobe Hooper or the 2004 miniseries—or as reimaginings—”Midnight Mass” by Mike Flanagan. But this 2024 version is the first King’s novel to be given the feature film treatment, to arguably mixed results.

At the heart of every cinematic re-adaptation is a question: Why? Gary Dauberman's Salem's Lot answers with a shrug, defined by disappointingly shallow storytelling and downgraded special effects. Tobe Hooper's 1979 miniseries isn't bulletproof, but neither is it as generic as Dauberman's take on Stephen King's northeastern vampire tale. It's not offensively terrible nor memorably inept, merely rudimentary in its vampiric lore and underwhelming compared to a billion other Count Dracula remixes we’ve endured over the decades. Dauberman's vanilla soft-serve of a King adaptation is begging for added flavors, hardly worth the wait as it crusted over in release-date purgatory.
Lewis Pullman plays a milquetoast Ben Mears, an author who returns to his Maine hometown of Salem’s Lot in search of closure. At the same time, conspicuous furniture seller Richard Straker (Pilou Asbæk) smuggles his vampire master — Kurt Barlow (Alexander Ward) — into a cursed manor that looms over Salem's Lot.

Long before “True Blood” or “Twilight” brought vampires to small-town America, horror writer Stephen King imagined the creatures invading his backyard in rural Maine. Until then, bloodsucking bat-men were something only Europeans had to worry about, as Dracula and his castle-dwelling kin preyed on hapless villagers half a world away. Then came “’Salem’s Lot,” King’s second novel, in which the man who’d made witches a modern-day concern with “Carrie” asked American readers: What if an outbreak of vampirism struck your community?
A tepid new feature version returns to that question a half-century later, offering flashes of style and a more satisfying finale in an otherwise weak take on its dated source material. Whereas King seemed to be kicking another stuffy old genre into the present, writer-director Gary Dauberman’s retro-minded adaptation goes in the opposite direction, embracing the pageboy haircuts, polyester-blend duds and don’t-trust-anyone paranoia of that era.

A new film adaptation of Stephen King’s 1977 vampire novel “Salem’s Lot” is preparing for its streaming premiere on service Max this October. The movie transports viewers to the small town of Jerusalem’s Lot, Maine as its residents are menaced by a mysterious evil force. Director Gary Dauberman applies lessons from previous Stephen King adaptations to bring the classic tale to a new audience in a chilling modern retelling.
Dauberman, known for his work on horror films like “Annabelle Comes Home”, stepped in to direct the film after its production faced delays due to industry disruptions. Principal photography wrapped earlier this year following location filming in Massachusetts towns like Ipswich and Sterling that stood in for the novel’s Maine setting. Care was taken to transform the modern streets and structures into period settings that capture the novel’s 1970s timeframe.
