Suspended Writers Guild West Member Reacts to Strike Discipline Vote: “This Was Never, Ever a Clear-Cut Case”
Image
On Friday, the results of a Writers Guild of America West vote over discipline for members accused of breaking strike rules signaled a divided union, at least on this issue.

In the cases of three writers, disciplinary measures initially decided by the union’s board were upheld, but by tight margins (between 52 and nearly 55 percent). A fourth writer’s “public censure” sentence over a Facebook post considered offensive was overturned in favor of an alternative action, months after the union publicly admonished the member, with 62 percent voting to throw out the punishment.

Julie Bush, a union member for roughly 15 years since she got her card through Sons of Anarchy, was one of the members whose discipline was confirmed by the proceedings on Friday.

On May 22, weeks after the 2023 writers’ strike began, Bush sent a non-signatory company a revision of a pilot she had written. Writers are forbidden by the union...

Why Are Streaming Residuals Such an Important Part of the SAG-AFTRA Strike?
Image
SAG-AFTRA has been on strike since July 14, 2023 after the AMPTP failed to meet their reasonable terms for a new contract. Those terms included many things like protections against studios using AI to recreate performers’ likeness in perpetuity, fees for late payments made by the studios, and increase in penalties for productions not allowing adequate meal breaks or rest periods while on set. While all of these things are important and necessary for the union to continue fighting for, one of the issues that union members have been most vocal about is the need to update the residual payment process in the streaming era.

Actors from Sean Gunn to Mandy Moore have shared the pennies in payments they’ve received in streaming residuals from their major roles in popular shows like Gilmore Girls and This is Us. Aaron Paul is the latest to make headlines for how little he’s made in residuals,...

Meredith Stiehm to Run for Reelection as President of WGA West
Image
Meredith Stiehm will seek a second two-year term as president of WGA West in the fall election, and the other top officials of the guild will also seek reelection.

Justine Bateman, the writer-director and former “Family Ties” star, is running for a spot on the WGA West board. Bateman has become outspoken on the need for tight regulation of artificial intelligence.

The guild announced its preliminary list of nominees on Wednesday. Stiehm, who has been active in both the agency campaign and the current strike, will run against challenger Rich Talarico, a “Key and Peele” writer who has faulted the guild for not doing more to fight back against the release of free clips of the show on YouTube.

Michele Mulroney is running for reelection as vice president, and Betsy Thomas is seeking another term as secretary-treasurer. They will run against Isaac Gomez and Jeffrey Thompson, respectively.

The WGA West has a 16-member board,...

WGA West President Meredith Stiehm Seeking Reelection Amid Ongoing Strike
Image
The Writers Guild of America West is holding officer and board elections in the middle of its ongoing strike, which is now in its 51st day. Incumbent president Meredith Stiehm is seeking reelection and will face off against Rich Talarico – both of whom were selected by the guild’s nominating committee.

In the race for vice president, incumbent Michele Mulroney will face challenger Isaac Gómez, while in the contest for secretary-treasurer, incumbent Betsy Thomas will face Jeffrey Thompson.

The guild said Wednesday that the nominating committee also selected 24 candidates to run for eight open seats on the guild’s board of directors. They are incumbents Nicole Yorkin, Dailyn Rodriguez, Adam Conover, Dante W. Harper, and Zoe Marshall, and challengers Molly Nussbaum, Danielle Iman, Maggie Levin, Blake Masters, Rob Forman, Anthony Sparks, Justine Bateman, Alex O’Keefe, Jonterri Gadson, Leah Folta, Susannah Grant, Grant Scharbo, Safia M. How the WGA Decided to Harness — but Not Ban — Artificial Intelligence
Image
Last summer, Van Robichaux ran for the board of directors of the Writers Guild of America West. Out of 17 candidates, he was the only one who raised a concern about artificial intelligence in his campaign statement.

“As far as I know, this issue is not on the radar of anyone else running for the board and while I might sound like a paranoid lunatic talking about it today, in 10 years I’m confident you’ll be glad I brought it up now,” he wrote.

He did not win.

AI has since become the hottest topic in the creative economy, spurred by the release of models like Stable Diffusion last August and ChatGPT in November. Across disciplines – graphic design, animation, acting, music, writing – artists are terrified of being replaced by robots.

“I think they’re right to be concerned,” said Bruce Schneier, a lecturer in cybersecurity at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

WGA West Board Candidates Address Wide Range Of Issues Ahead Of Next Year’s Contract Talks And Possible Strike
Image
Next year’s contract talks and a possible writers strike are looming large over the WGA West’s ongoing board election, in which 17 candidates are vying for eight open seats. The WGA’s current contract doesn’t expire until May 1, but in their campaign statements, many of the candidates are making it clear that they’re prepared to strike if the guild can’t get a fair deal at the bargaining table.

And there’s considerable pent-up demand for major gains, in no small part because in 2020, when the WGA’s previous contract was set to expire, contractual advances the guild had hoped to make became all but impossible to achieve because the threat of a strike was all but off the table as the industry was already shut down by the first wave of the Covid pandemic.

Several candidates observed that the guild’s historic victory last year in...

Owen Wilson Confirms Wedding Crashers 2 Talks: I'm Sure We'll Do It
Image
Owen Wilson has provided another positive update on Wedding Crashers 2, confirming that he's recently been in talks to return for the comedy sequel alongside Vince Vaughn. In 2005, the first Wedding Crashers, which was directed by David Dobkin, was a big hit with filmgoers when it premiered. Some fans of the movie has called for a sequel to happen for years, but while Dobkin has teased one in the past, it just never seemed to get off the ground.

There have been new rumors of Wedding Crashers 2 inching closer to getting an official green light. This wasn't confirmed and it remains to be seen if the movie really will happen this time, but the report suggested that it's closer than ever before. To find out exactly what's going on with the project's current status, Collider directly spoke to Owen Wilson who had this to say in response.

"Yeah, there...

Sonic the Hedgehog Fully Revealed in Live-Action Movie
It's not clear who exactly was asking for it, but Paramount Pictures is bringing us a live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie this winter. So far, the studio has given potential viewers sneak peeks at the speedrunning rodent, but not yet a full reveal of the furry blue character. Now, it seems a better look at Sonic has been leaked by the advertising agency Hamagami / Carroll, Inc., in a series of images on their official website touting the character's design. Describing Sonic as "irreverent and sarcastic" as well as "chill and likable," the pictures reveal Sonic in various poses: holding a golden ring, waving his index finger, and running through a giant hoop.

Although the images have since been removed, they were accompanied with an explanation while the pictures were live. "You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone in the world who isn't familiar with Sega's beloved IP, Sonic the Hedgehog,...

‘Fist Fight’ Review
Stars: Charlie Day, Ice Cube, Tracy Morgan, Jillian Bell, Dean Norris, Christina Hendricks, Dennis Haysbert, JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Kumail Nanjiani | Written by Van Robichaux, Evan Susser | Directed by Richie Keen

Is anyone else old enough to remember Three O’Clock High? You are? Well you might get a feeling of deja-vu watching Fist Fight. Which follows a very similar storyline, only this time it’s teachers planning to fight Not the students!

Set on the last day of the year, Fist Fight sees mild-mannered high school English teacher Andy Campbell (Day) trying his best to keep it together amidst senior pranks, a dysfunctional administration and budget cuts that put jobs on the line. Things go from bad to worse when he accidentally crosses his much tougher and deeply feared colleague, Ron Strickland (Ice Cube), who challenges Campbell to an old-fashioned throw down after school. News of the fight spreads like...

Fist Fight review
2017 should hopefully have some terrific comedies. Fist Fight, starring Ice Cube and Charlie Day, is not one of them.

At one point during Fist Fight, the new comedy starring Ice Cube and Charlie Day, I could only think of Step Brothers, an inverted Bugsy Malone that casts adults as childish characters and stands up as Adam McKay's masterpiece. Although there's plenty of comic mileage in adults acting like kids, Fist Fight is sadly not a patch on those farcical heights.

The film takes place at Roosevelt High School, an inner city school where budget cuts have left the entire faculty fearing for their jobs, and also fearing the students' designated Senior Pranks Day on the last day of term. As English teacher Mr. Campbell (Day) observes, the pranks don't really seem like pranks - mostly, they involve criminal damage and horse-kidnapping.

History teacher Mr. Strickland (Cube) is having none...

Fist Fight Review
Author: Stefan Pape

The premise to Richie Keen’s Fist Fight is simple, to a point where it’s hard to fathom quite how it’s sustained a feature length narrative. It’s, quite literally, about two men having a fight, and in the most contrived way imaginable that is stretched out across 90 painfully unfunny minutes, with the one paramount, lone joke being that of teachers acting more immaturely than the students they educate. And believe me, it gets tedious pretty quickly.

Charlie Day plays Andy Campbell, a beleaguered high school teacher who remains perpetually bemused, and almost impressed, with the sheer level of irresponsibility in the pranks pulled by his students. Fearing his job may be on the line, and with a pregnant wife at home, life is somewhat stressful – and it’s made even more so when he finds himself in the principle’s office next to the...

'Fist Fight' Review: Ice Cube Comedy Is One Big Swing and a Miss
Charlie Day
Charlie Day owns one of the highest-pitched male squeaks in the business and he puts it to hilarious use on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I could watch him in anything – but Fist Fight is pushing it, given that's it's always raining a storm of comic clichés that quickly drowns any semblance of audience goodwill.

Day plays Mr. Campbell, a dweeb English teacher at Atlanta's Roosevelt High where it's senior prank day and our man is getting rattled. Forget the meth-drugged horse running through the halls or the dick images...

Film Review: Report Card on ‘Fist Fight’ is a Failing Grade
Chicago – “Fist Fight” is such a thin premise it can’t even sustain its own two minute trailer, much less a feature length film. That premise, what there is of it, is simple – English teacher (Charlie Day) and History Teacher (Ice Cube) get involved in an altercation with a student on the last day of class, at a failing high school known for senior pranks.

Teacher Ice Cube gets fired, and blames Charlie Day. So they act like children and settle their differences with a fist fight outside.

Rating: 0.0/5.0

And that’s it. The entire running time is spent with Ice Cube glowering, and Charlie Day sputtering about trying to avoid the impending beatdown. There have been a lot of crappy studio comedies over the past few years, but this one stands out as something you can imagine even Adam Sandler turning down because of its shoddiness.

The film has no basis in reality,...

Fist Fight Review
New York City’s harsh streets may have jaded this innocent critic, but a sense of humor still flickers on. I swear it. My laughter during Bob’s Burgers is disruptive to anyone in a 100-yard radius. So why have mainstream comedies been leaving me empty and numb? Fist Fight hits upon everything that should tickle my pop-culture funnybone. Ice Cube references pepper this gangster vs. Charlie Day rumble – something I’d pay top dollar for – yet the film itself lands soft, unflinching blows. Dick jokes and obscenities merely strive for passing marks, while the film’s curriculum couldn’t be more by-the-books. Are we sure this screenplay wasn’t scribbled down during a boring lecture?

Day stars as good-guy teacher Mr. Campbell, who fearfully works at a deplorable high school alongside his colleague, Cube’s Mr. Strickland. Campbell finds himself in Strickland’s history class, where one of the...

Review: ‘Fist Fight’ is Mindless, Crude, and Thoroughly Funny
It’s hard to believe that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been on the air for twelve years now, but it’s still going strong. While the show opened doors for the entire quartet of relative unknowns, Charlie Day has been the one who’s leveraged his rising star into a pretty prolific film career, generally as the confused, manic comic relief. He fills that role on the show too, albeit at a level of imbecilic illiteracy that’s hard to fathom without watching yourself. But in 2015, ten years after the comedy’s debut, a different side of Charlie was shown. The episode was “Charlie Work” and it allowed Day to flip that energy into no-nonsense frustration and uncharacteristic productivity. He was confident, assertive, and coherent—and funnier as a result.

I wonder if it was fate then that Day would sign onto Fist Fight four months after...

The Gloves Are Off In Red Band Trailer For New Line’s Fist Fight
High school, the best years of your life – at least, that’s what nostalgic adults would have you believe, as they look back on their days in education through rose-tinted glasses. But in New Line’s imminent comedy Fist Fight, high school is transformed into a gladiatorial arena in which Charlie Day and Ice Cube lock horns.

Pegged for release on February 17th, New Line has today unleashed the bonkers red band trailer for Richie Keen’s (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) caper, which sees a seemingly innocuous rivalry bubble over into a full-blown war. Once the battle lines are drawn, Charlie Day’s mild-mannered English teacher Andy Campbell finds himself avoiding Ice Cube’s Ron Strickland at all costs, with the latter out to enact his revenge after Campbell’s complacencies lead to him getting the sack.

Cue the ridiculously over-the-top battle sequence involving horses trotting through the...

Fist Fight Red Band Trailer Is Hilarious, Raw and Very Violent
Ice Cube
Warner Bros. has already released two Fist Fight trailers, which were suitable for all ages, but the studio has saved the best for last. Warner Bros. has released an outrageous red band trailer, which doesn't feature any nudity, but does feature a generous amount of R-rated language from stars Ice Cube, Charlie Day, Tracy Morgan, Jillian Bell and much more. We also get a better look at how disrespectful the students really are at this school, and how dysfunctional the teachers are.

Ice Cube and Charlie Day star as high school teachers prepared to solve their differences the hard way. On the last day of the school year, mild-mannered high school English teacher Andy Campbell (Charlie Day) is trying his best to keep it together amidst outrageous senior pranks, a dysfunctional administration and budget cuts that are putting his job on the line just as his wife is expecting their second baby.

Fist Fight Trailer #2: Ice Cube and Charlie Day Throw Down
Ice Cube, Charlie Day, Christina Hendricks, Tracy Morgan, Jillian Bell, and Kumail Nanjiani in Fist Fight (2017)
Back in September, just as the school year was getting started, Warner Bros. debuted the first trailer for the upcoming comedy Fist Fight, which hits theaters February 17, 2017. Fist Fight stars Ice Cube and Charlie Day as two high school teachers prepared to solve their differences the hard way. Today, we have the second trailer with even more new footage of what could be a huge comedy hit early next year, along with the new poster. This raucuous show down will have plenty of competition standing in its way, though.

Fist Fight will go up against Universal's action-adventure The Great Wall, starring Matt Damon, 20th Century Fox's thriller A Cure For Wellness, starring Dane DeHaan and Sony's horror film Patient Zero, starring Natalie Dormer. It will also open one week after a trio of highly-anticipated movies arrive on February 10, 2017, Universals' Fifty Shades Darker, Lionsgate's John Wick: Chapter Two and Warner Bros.

Wedding Crashers 2 Is A Thing, The Cast May Not Return, But They've Hired Writers
Let me just admit, right here at the start, that I loved Wedding Crashers when it came out in July of 2005. When I saw it, I'd just gone through a terrible breakup, and that summer was a rough one. A buddy of mine suggested we catch Wedding Crashers cause he figured I could use a good laugh. So three of us went and catch it at the College Point Multiplex in Queens...and we laughed. We laughed A Lot.

It was one of those great moviegoing experiences where you and your pals are laughing so hard that you have to try and shush each other because you're missing parts of the movie from laughing so much.

In short, it was just what I needed.

I picked it up on DVD when it came out later that year, and- to this day- I'll always had a soft spot for Wedding Crashers.

Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson in Wedding Crashers (2005)
Wedding Crashers 2 Script Finished, Original Director May Return
Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson in Wedding Crashers (2005)
Last week, fans of unnecessary long-in-the-tooth comedy sequels, like the disappointing Zoolander 2 and Anchorman 2, became mildly enthusiastic when they heard Wedding Crashers 2 might actually happen. While the follow-up to the 2005 blockbuster smash hasn't been officially confirmed, the script was recently turned in. And the original director is expected to return.

Isla Fisher, wife of comedy icon Sacha Baron Cohen, made waves last week when she revealed that Wedding Crashers 2 was officially happening. How did she know? Because Vince Vaughn told her to get ready. But there was no official word about the sequel until today. Deadline claims to have the real scoop as to what is going on.

Right now, Wedding Crashers 2 is nowhere near getting a green light from New Line Studios. But that doesn't mean this is another lofty rumor. The main cast, led by Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn, need to sign off creatively on the project.

Deadpool Director Tim Miller to Help Develop Sonic The Hedgehog Movie
Deadpool director Tim Miller recently dropped out of the sequel because of some creative differences with Ryan Reynolds and the studio. If the rumored reasons behind the departure are true, it's probably for the best.

Miller has already jumped on board a film project called Influx, which is an adaptation of the David Suarez novel, and it's expected to end up being a film trilogy. According to Variety, he's also joined the production team of Sony Pictures live-action CG hybrid adaptation of the classic Sega video game Sonic the Hedgehog.

He will be a producer on the film and help out Blur Studio’s Jeff Fowler, who is attached to direct and oversee the development of the project. They will also work with Neal H. Moritz, who is the producer of the Fast and Furious franchise. Miller had this to say in a statement:

“Jeff is an incredible director with strong story instincts.

Just one week after director Tim Miller left his highly-anticipated sequel Deadpool 2, the filmmaker has found his next project. Today we have word that Tim Miller has signed on to develop and executive produce Sony Pictures' Sonic the Hedgehog movie. The project will mark quite the drastic departure from the R-rated Deadpool, with Sonic the Hedgehog being crafted as a live-action/CGI hybrid.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Tim Miller will develop the project with his longtime Blur Studios partner Jeff Fowler, who will make his directorial debut with the project. Neal Moritz is also attached to produce this video game adaptation, with Patrick Casey and Josh Miller (Golan the Insatiable) writing the script. 'Sonic the Hedgehog' Movie Is Coming in 2018
Christine Cavanaugh, Charlie Adler, Mark Ballou, Cam Brainard, Jim Cummings, Rob Paulsen, Bradley Pierce, Kath Soucie, Cree Summer, and Jaleel White in Sonic the Hedgehog (1993)
Back in June 2014, Sony Pictures announced it was teaming up with the Sega Sammy Group to produce a live-action/CGI hybrid movie based on the beloved video game Sonic the Hedgehog. At the time, no release date was announced, and we haven't heard anything about this movie project since then. But thanks to a new interview, we now know the project is still on track. The World Folio recently spoke with Sega Sammy Group CEO Hajime Satomi, who confirmed that the Sonic the Hedgehog movie is being planned for a 2018 release date.

"Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid Sonic the Hedgehog movie scheduled for release in 2018. Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved."

No director is attached yet, but last year's announcement revealed that...

The Sonic The Hedgehog Movie Will Be a Live-Action Animation Hybrid
Last year, it was announced that Sonic the Hedgehog would be getting the feature film treatment. Sega is teaming up with Sony Pictures to bring it to the big screen. We learned at the time that the film would help be developed by Sega's CG animation film company, so I just assumed that it would be a full CG animated film, which would have been great!

Unfortunately, in this latest update by Sega CEO Hajime Satomi, we learn that the film is going to be a live-action-animation hybrid film, which isn't appealing at all. These CG animated and live-action hybrid films never work, and it breaks my heart that this is the direction Sony and Sega are taking the production. During an interview with The Worldfolio, Satomi said:

"Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ movie scheduled...

Semi Live-Action "Sonic" Film Hits 2018
Back in 2014 came word that Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sega Sammy Group's Marza Animation Planet were teaming up to develop "Sonic the Hedgehog," a live-action and animation hybrid cinematic feature based on the iconic video game franchise.

Nothing much has been heard since, but Sega CEO Hajime Satomi revealed to Worldfolio (via io9) this week that the project is still on the way and is being fast-tracked for a 2018 release.

The film aims to capture Sonic's irreverent tone and will incorporate iconic characters from the franchise including the evil Dr. Eggman. Evan Susser and Van Robichaux are penning this feature which is being produced by Neal H. Moritz, Takeshi Ito and Mie Onishi.

The "Sonic" franchise has sold over 140 million games and the character previously headlined several animated series.

Tracy Morgan Looking to Make Film Comeback With the Ice Cube Comedy Fist Fight
Tracy Morgan at an event for The 67th Primetime Emmy Awards (2015)
According to TheWrap, Tracy Morgan is negotiating his first movie following last year's tragic car crash. Morgan is reportedly angling to mount his film comeback alongside Ice Cube and It's Always Sunny's Charlie Day in a Richie Keen comedy called Fist Fight. Evan Susser and Van Robichaux have written the script, which follows two high school teachers (Day and Cube) who will likely do exactly what the title implies; Variety adds that Morgan will play a coach at the school. Production is slated to begin this month in Atlanta. The last film Morgan appeared in was Chris Rock's Top Five, in which he played a character in Rock's inner circle. Since his recovery from the collision, Morgan has enjoyed a successful and well-supported turnaround this summer, giving his first interview in June, and making an emotional (and hilarious) industry return at last night's Emmys. You'll next see him...

Tracy Morgan Returns to Movies in Ice Cube's 'Fist Fight'
Tracy Morgan
One of the big surprises at last night's 67th Primetime Emmy Awards was the return of Tracy Morgan, who presented the last award of the night. He received a standing ovation from the crowd for his surprise appearance, which came more than a year after he suffered severe injuries from a car accident last summer. Today we have word from The Hollywood Reporter that the actor is in talks to join his first movie since the accident, New Line Cinema's Fist Fight.

We first reported on First Fight back in June, when Ice Cube and Charlie Day signed on to star. The plot has been compared to the 1987 cult classic comedy Three O'Clock High, where a new kid challenges a nerd to a fight after school gets out at 3 o'clock. Fist Fight takes that premise and switches it up with two adult teachers.

Charlie Day is playing an introverted...

One of the memorable events from this weekend’s Emmy Awards ceremony was the surprise appearance of 30 Rock actor and comedian Tracy Morgan, who was severely injured in a road accident in June last year. He’s well on the road to recovery and is now lining up his first job since the incident – Morgan is in talks to join the Ice Cube/Charlie Day comedy film Fist Fight. The New Line comedy has a script from Van Robichaux and Evan Susser, and It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s Richie Keen planning to direct.
