15 Years Ago, Another R-Rated Superhero Movie Paved The Way For Deadpool At The Box Office
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

"This is going to be the most expensive home movie I ever made." Those are the alleged words of director Matthew Vaughn, according to Christopher Mintz-Plasse, one of the stars of 2010's "Kick-Ass." In an interview with Chron at the time, the "Superbad" star explained that Vaughn's R-rated superhero movie "almost didn't get made" and that "nobody wanted to touch it."

That all may be hard to imagine now. Why wouldn't a studio want to back a comic book movie with a killer cast? And this is Matthew Vaughn we're talking about! But 2010 was a very different time. Vaughn hadn't yet reinvented the "X-Men" franchise with "First Class," nor had he delivered the "Kingsman" property. He was merely a stylish filmmaker...

Harold Ramis' Final Film Hits Hulu in April (16 Years After Bombing)
Image
Fans of Ghostbusters comedy legend Harold Ramis will be able to stream his last-ever movie next month. The filmmaker's final directorial effort before his death in 2014 was the prehistoric comedy Year One.

Even some of Ramis' biggest fans may have missed Year One since it under-performed in theaters in 2009, and was largely dismissed by critics. Hulu subscribers will get to decide for themselves about whether Year One was wrongfully ignored when it becomes available to stream on April 1, 2025.

Year One Comes to Hulu in April

Jack Black and Michael Cera starred in Ramis' spoof of the biblical Book of Exodus, as two primitives traveling to the sin-filled village of Sodom to save their love interests (June Diane Raphael and Juno Temple). The comedy boasted a hugely impressive cast, including a Superbad reunion for Cera with co-star Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Bill Hader, Olivia Wilde, Paul Rudd and David Cross all featured in Year One too.

"Too Vile A Character": Sony Refused To Let 1 Superbad Character Near A PlayStation Because He Was "So Reprehensible"
Image
Superbad writer and star Seth Rogen reveals that Sony intervened and banned one character from even laying a finger on a PlayStation controller during the events of the 2008 movie. The coming-of-age teen comedy focuses on three social misfits as they try to get with the girls of their dreams during a high-school party, sending them on an absurd odyssey. Alongside producing and writing the feature alongside Evan Goldberg, Superbad stars Rogen as Officer Michaels, who becomes the unlikely friend of Christopher Mintz-Plasse's Fogell when he poses as the now-infamous McLovin.

As Rogen attended the SXSW premiere event for his upcoming series The Studio, the actor was asked by Rotten Tomatoeswhat the most notable studio notes he had received throughout his career. He stated that during the production of Superbad, Sony, who were the distributor and parent company to Columbia Pictures, found Jonah Hill's Seth "vile," something Rogen jokes...

Jonah Hill Has One Condition To Return For Superbad 2
Image
There was a time when the mention of "McLovin" would've had people assuming McDonalds had a promotional event happening on Valentine's Day. After 2007 though, thanks to Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and one of the best comedies ever made, "Superbad" made it totally reasonable to have that name on a driver's license. It also became an essential movie about high school, so much so that, years later, people still ask its stars if we'll ever get a sequel. Well, one of the loudest mouths in the movie and the actor who's cursed the most on film, Jonah Hill, has a plan so ridiculous it just might work.

In a 2022 interview with W Magazine, Hill said he would absolutely be down for returning to the world of Seth (Hill), Evan (Cera), and Fogell aka McLovin (Mintz-Plasse) under one condition: they would all have to be in their 80s. Sure, it...

Jonah Hill Didn’t Like Working With This Actor Who Worked With Him in One of His Best Comedy Movies
Image
Jonah Hill’s rise to stardom in Hollywood was a coming-of-age comedy that still rules as one of the best comedy films of the 2000s, Superbad.

The film saw three teenagers, played by Hill, Michael Cera, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, making plans to party and lose their virginity before their high school graduation. Interestingly, Hill found his debutant co-star Mintz-Plasse annoying to film with.

Writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg based the characters of Hill and Cera on themselves during their senior year, hence the characters were named Seth and Evan. Rogen and Goldberg started developing the script in 2000 and it took seven years for them to see their vision on the screen.

10 Popular Movies That Aren't As Good As You Remember
Image
Popular is a tough word when it comes to describing movies. Too often, something is given a negative connotation because it's popular. Appealing to a wide range of audiences and connecting with them is not something to be embarrassed about. Liking or disliking a particular film has no morality attached to it, and there's often a reason that so many viewers feel seen by a project and are engaged by it. However, there are plenty of films that were theatrical hits that have become mythologized by the culture that doesn't live up to the standard set by their popularity.

Critiquing these films is not to say that they aren't good. They are, and even if their initial shine has worn off in the years since they first premiered, that doesn't make them any less fun to watch. It's easy to say that the biggest movie box office bombs of all...

15 Best Movies Like Project X
Image
Movies like Project X deliver the wild parties and the unbreakable friendship of youth. The 2012 film takes place over the course of one night while following Thomas, Costa, and J.B., three unpopular high school seniors committed to throwing the party of their lives. What seems like the trio's final attempt to do something remarkable during their school years quickly goes off the rails, with the party growing increasingly absurd and out of hand.

Project X wasn't the first comedy about non-stop partying, but it helped revitalize the subgenre. The film is produced by Todd Phillips, who directed The Hangover franchise, and its influence on pop culture was so great it has been cited by many real-life teens as their inspiration for throwing wild parties (via The Dallas Morning News). By playing with the most-used teen comedy tropes, Project X adapts typical conventions to a found footage style, delivering a one-of-a-kind movie.

10 Horror Movies That Ripped Off Stephen King Stories
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for the movies mentioned in this articleThere aren't many names you can associate with the world of horror more than the great Stephen King. The Portland, Maine-born author's work has been adapted into various TV shows and movies, and his writing isn't showing many signs of slowing down either. King’s ability to surprise, amaze, and bring us both terror, and solace, remains unsurpassed.

Since Carrie hit cinemas in 1976, Stephen King adaptations have been a regular occurrence for movie-goers. Longlegs director Osgood Perkins' new movie, The Monkey, is based on one of his short stories, and it promises to have Itchy & Scratchy-level violence. However, his influence is so great that many films have been made that are blatant rip-offs of King's work.

Superbad Cast & Where They Are Now
Image
The 2007 teen comedy Superbad has an outstanding ensemble cast full of big-name stars. Most of Superbad's best quotes are from its three main characters, Seth, Evan, and Fogell aka McLovin, who are played by Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, respectively. Directed by Greg Mottola, Superbad is written by comedic partners Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen, the latter of whom plays Officer Michaels in the film. The protagonists, Seth and Evan, are loosely based on Rogen and Goldberg and their real-life experiences growing up as seniors in high school in Vancouver, Canada.

Superbad was the 21st highest-grossing movie in 2007 with a domestic total of $121.46 million. It was a breakout movie for both Hill and Cera and is widely considered a landmark film in the modern comedy genre. It was the feature film writing debut of both Rogen and Goldberg, who went on to pen other classic comedy films...

Why Superbad 2 Never Happened
Image
Superbad 2 never happened because the film's writers, director, and cast weren't on board. The raucous teen sex comedy about best friends trying to lose their virginity was directed by Greg Mottola and written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Superbad stars Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Emma Stone, Bill Hader, and Rogen. The film featured two close high school friends and a senior party that gave them one last chance to spend time together before leaving for college.

Goldberg and Rogen began crafting the script while in their teens, and it is based on real-life events that happened to Rogen and Goldberg during their senior year at their Vancouver high school in the 90s. Superbad was both a commercial and critical success, grossing over $170 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo). There was also almost a Superbad 2, because producer Judd Apatow said he had an idea for the story, but...

Kick-ass Star Chloë Grace Moretz Comes Out As Gay Woman In Heartfelt New Social Media Post
Image
Chloë Grace Moretz already had a lot of acting credits to her name before starring in Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass, but that role put her on the map...and generated a lot of controversy.

Given her young age at the time, the fact she was dropping F-bombs (and the odd C-word) shocked many, as did the sheer level of violence some of the 11-year-old's scenes included. Since then, Moretz has gone on to star in the likes of Let Me In, Hugo, Carrie, Tom & Jerry, and Kick-Ass 2, of course.

Now, the actor is making headlines after coming out as a "gay woman" on Instagram. Moretz revealed her sexual orientation in a post regarding her decision in the 2024 United States Presidential Election.

Moretz has been romantically linked to model Kate Harrison since 2018 but has never publicly commented on her sexuality. This cause was clearly one important enough to the actor to change that.

15 Confirmed Movie Sequels And Reboots Nobody Asked For
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

Much of the recent criticism of Hollywood comes from the seemingly endless stream of reboots and remakes. The world of cinema is making a vain attempt to exploit a played-out property, like making an eighth Children of the Corn sequel or rebooting the original twice, which sadly actually happened.

The movie business is generally geared toward making money, which is why studios favor proven properties over fresh ideas, but recycling established films and franchises doesn't always make sound financial sense. Cranking out more MCU films is a no-brainer, but there are tons of confirmed upcoming sequels and reboots that nobody asked for.

Updated by Jordan Iacobucci on October 4, 2024: Whether classic films that shouldn't be touched or seemingly endless franchises that keep cranking out new movies, Hollywood can't always help churning out new sequels and remakes. This list has been updated with...

Being an actor is extremely hard. Many times, an aspiring actor will go to an audition and come away disappointed. There was a massive role that they completely failed to get. But sometimes, losing that role works out, because then they're offered another one from the same production.

In an alternate universe, maybe they got the role they were going for, but the movie might have worked out for the worse. It's better that they got the opportunity to learn and grow as actors. Also, some of these movies went on to become downright iconic.

10 Nicolas Cage Movies Where The Actor Plays A Fully Unhinged Character
Image
Out of all the over-the-top and outrageous actors in Hollywood, no performer has a reputation for playing unhinged characters quite like Nicolas Cage. 12 Best Movies Like Blink Twice
Image
Blink Twice, Zo Kravitz's directorial debut, has viewers searching high and low for movies that share some of the psychological thriller's DNA. Co-written by Kravitz and E.T. Feigenbaum (High Fidelity), Blink Twice is a fairly singular movie-going experience, though some of its plot points are familiar to the genres it pulls from. In the film, cocktail waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie) has a seemingly chance encounter with billionaire tech mogul Slater King (Channing Tatum), who, after being "canceled," became an advocate for therapy. In what Frida accurately dubs a "real casual" move, Slater also bought a private island.

While Blink Twice boasts plenty of hints that telegraph where its twists and turns are headed, the film is still a harrowing journey through Frida's unearthed trauma. At the same time, Blink Twice features some surprisingly funny moments. It's a disorienting experience that makes the terror at its core all-the-more unsettling. Blink Twice...

Is Trolls 4 Happening? Everything We Know
Image
Fans of the Trolls franchise are waiting expectantly for Trolls 4, the next installment in the magical, musical hit children's series. Jumping on the lucrative bandwagon of movies based on toy brands, Trolls premiered in 2016, starring Justin Timberlake as Branch and Anna Kendrick as Princess Poppy. It's no coincidence that those two leads are talented singers as the Trolls franchise is also a musical, sing-a-long series that features kidified versions of popular songs. The soundtracks of Trolls Band Together, Trolls World Tour, and Trolls are reason enough to see the movies.

Just about every four years, a new Trolls movie has come out with Trolls World Tour premiering on April 10, 2020, and Trolls Band Together on November 17, 2023. The series has been critically successful, with the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score being 63% for Trolls Band Together. The first and third Trolls films earned over $200 million each and Trolls World Tour's lower earnings can be...

South Park in Live-Action Imagined by Concept Trailer
Image
The hit animated series South Park is known in part for its very unique animation style, though some fans may still wonder how the show's cast of characters might appear in live-action. A new concept trailer imagines how that might turn out, though the casting used isn't exactly realistic.

The concept trailer, created using images and voices generated by artificial intelligence, was posted to YouTube by Multiverse Of AI. It imagines that Seth Rogen is the director of the South Park film while Jonah Hill does a voiceover as Eric Cartman. Of course, given how Hill is now 40 years old, he wouldn't be likely to play Cartman if such a movie were to actually happen anytime soon. The same can be said for many of the other casting picks, which includes imagining other adult actors as the young boys, though the concept trailer still does its job in creating a...

Image
21 Jump Street is a hilarious comedy that showcases the comedic talents of Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as two undercover cops. The film, directed by Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, was a hit, leading to the sequel 22 Jump Street and potential for 23 Jump Street. With a great supporting cast including Brie Larson, Dave Franco, and Johnny Depp in a cameo, 21 Jump Street remains a fan favorite.

21 Jump Street is one of the most memorable and hilarious comedies from the early 2010s partly due to its great cast. 21 Jump Street follows the unlikely duo of Jonah Hill's Schmidt and Channing Tatum's Jenko as two undercover cops who are sent on a mission to expose a synthetic drug ring at a local high school. A new trailer reimagines South Park in live-action, featuring famous actors such as Michael Cera and Jonah Hill. This fantasy cast includes Seth Green as Kyle and Craig Robinson as Chef in an AI-generated trailer concept. While a live-action South Park may not be happening, the idea of adult actors playing schoolchildren is intriguing.

A new trailer shows a live-action reimagining of South Park, featuring several notable actors. Focusing on the tales of four elementary schoolers in South Park, Colorado, the raunchy adult comedy show began in 1997 and has since had 26 seasons. Created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, South Park's leading voice cast featured both creators as the pain stars, alongside Isaac Hayes, Mona Marshall, April Stewart, Adrien Beard, and Eliza Schneider.

Now, a new live-action South Park trailer from Multiverse Of AI reveals a look at the main characters as portrayed by major actors.

A CBS Sitcom Focused On Millennials Got Canceled After 1 Season For The Most Ironic Reason
Image
The Great Indoors, starring Joel McHale, faced cancellation for depicting millennials as easily offended. Critics panned the sitcom's premise, leading to low ratings and a one-season run before cancellation. Millennials' sensitivity towards the series ironically contributed to its lack of renewal for a second season.

One CBS sitcom series focused on millennial culture faced cancelation for the most ironic reason. The network aired The Great Indoors premiere in October 2016, and by 2017, the show was on the chopping block. The comedy series initially had a time slot leading into Thursday night's The Big Bang Theory, but the headliner didn't live up to its position in the 2016-2017 CBS lineup. As such, the show became another sitcom canceled after one season. Ultimately, the cancelation came down to the show's premise, which, ironically but perhaps not unintentionally, turned off some of its viewers.

The series starred Joel McHale as Jack Gordon, an adventure...

Netflix has a long list of a variety of movies coming in 2024, and among them is Incoming, which will be the closest we will get to a sequel to Superbad. The Stuntman - Release Window, Producer, Director And More Info

Remember the halcyon days of 2010? The Marvel Cinematic Universe was still in its infancy, but much was already being made of any superhero movie that felt even slightly different from the future juggernaut's quippy origin stories. Future DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn's name was already in the middle of conversations about superhero ethics thanks to his new film "Super," while fans of Alan Moore's "Watchmen" comics were still debating the merits and myriad drawbacks of Zack Snyder's big-screen adaptation. From "The Spirit" to "Hancock," recent alternative superhero stories were actively dividing audiences who had yet to lay eyes on a single "Avengers" film.

Then "Kick-Ass" showed up. The R-rated action-comedy featured a scrappy teen hero, a little girl who loved to beat the s**t out of people, a fittingly odd Nicolas Cage performance, and the unofficially cinematic mascot of the late aughts, "Superbad" breakout star Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

This Throwback Toy Inspired the Villains in Trolls 3, but No One Noticed
Image
Quick Links What Is Trolls Band Together About? What Is a Betty Spaghetty Doll? How Velvet and Veneer Mirror Betty Spaghetty

As Trolls Band Together enjoys newfound popularity on Netflix, many fans have failed to notice how a throwback toy from the 1990s may have inspired the movie's villains Velvet (Amy Schumer) and Veneer (Andrew Rannells). Introduced in 1998, The toy Betty Spaghetty was a beloved rubber doll with pliable features, spindly limbs, and thin pasta-like angel hair that defines the character as a free-spirited thrill-seeker.

Despite the overt similarities between Betty Spaghetty and Velvet and Veneer, the obscure '90s toy reference flew over most fans' heads while watching the film. As such, viewers new and familiar with the Trolls universe felt compelled to search for Velvet and Veneer's anatomical makeup, leading to the theory that Betty Spaghetty directly inspired the Trolls 3 villains. A closer look at Velvet and Veneer...

Mintz-Plasse has successfully diversified his career with voice acting in films like How to Train Your Dragon and Trolls. He has been part of at least three bands, currently playing with Colorvision, showcasing his musical talents alongside acting.

Christopher Mintz-Plasse has been working since 2007, when he was just a teenager, and in those years, he has managed to amass an impressive net worth. Comedy movies like Superbad only come around once every few years, so when a genre-defining one like that drops, everyone in it suddenly becomes a massive Hollywood star. Why Superbad Should Never Have a Sequel According to Its Writers: 'Let's F*cking Leave It As Is'
Image
Superbad won't be getting a sequel, with Rogen and Goldberg thinking there's no need to revisit it. The movie was a huge success, launching the careers of many stars and becoming a fan favorite. Rogen and Goldberg prefer leaving Superbad untouched, not risking a potentially bad sequel to the cult classic.

Superbad will never get a sequel according to Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Although audience nostalgia for belated legacy sequels is currently at an all-time high, Rogen and Goldberg believe that there is no real purpose in making a sequel to their 2007 smash hit, which instigated a wave of copycat raunchy teen comedies well into the 2010s. In a new interview, the pair explained how their personal relationship with Superbad is one of the reasons they would be very hesitant to even consider revisiting the movie again.

As coming-of-age, teen comedies go, Superbad is remembered as one of the best among its fans,...
