'John Wick's Chad Stahelski to Produce 'Sifu' Adaptation for Netflix
Image
Chad Stahelski is keeping busy with his video game adaptations, as a new report from Deadline has revealed that the John Wick director will be producing a Netflix adaptation of the video game Sifu, which was developed and published by Sloclap and released in 2022. The game is a beat-em-up with challenging combat scenarios and a compelling thematic twist based on a game mechanic that causes players to age up whenever they lose a fight. The mechanic requires careful strategy, as when the player's character ages, they are given access to new powerful moves, but if they get too old, they can die permanently and will have to start the game from the beginning.

Sifu combines elements of time-loop and rogue-like games to create a stunning and addictive fighting game. Its story of revenge can make for an interesting feature film. 87Eleven, Stahelski's production company behind projects such as Atomic Blonde and The Fall Guy,...

As reported by Deadline, John Wick director Chad Stahelski has joined the project as a producer with partners Jason Spritz and Alex Young through their 87Eleven Entertainment banner. They join Story Kitchen producers Mike Goldberg and Dmitri M. Johnson.

Netflix Boards Feature Adaptation Of Slocap Game ‘Sifu’ With T.S. Nowlin Writing; Chad Stahelski’s 87Eleven Banner Joins Story Kitchen As Producers
Image
Exclusive: Netflix has come aboard the feature adaptation of Slocap’s popular video game Sifu and tapped T.S. Nowlin to write the script. Insiders add that Chad Stahelski and his 87Eleven Entertainment banner have joined Story Kitchen as producers, and he will now produce with his partners Jason Spritz and Alex Young, as will Dmitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg for Story Kitchen.

The video game developed and published by Sloclap tells a story of revenge set in modern-day China. It follows the student of a martial arts school’s master (Sifu) as he seeks to avenge the murder of his mentor. The twist, however, is that thanks to a magical talisman, each time our hero dies, he’s resurrected, but the price paid is that he ages with every use. And should he become too old too fast, his death shall become permanent, and his quest unfulfilled.

Exclusive: The Maze Runner filmmakers and their OddBall Entertainment studio have signed with CAA, we can tell you.

Wes Ball and Joe Hartwick recently signed a three-year, first-look deal with Sony Pictures where they are respectively attached to direct and produce the live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda based on the uber-hit 150M copy selling video game franchise, for Sony and Nintendo. T.S. Nowlin is writing the new draft of Zelda. The game follows the elf-like warrior Link and elegant Princess Zelda as they fight to save the magical land of Hyrule from Ganon, an evil warlord-turned-demon king.

Ball most recently directed, with Hartwick producing, 20th Century Studios’ Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, one of the key pics last summer to resuscitate the box office after a sleepy frame due to the strikes; that installment opening to $58.4M stateside and grossing over $171M domestic, and close to $380M worldwide.

Dylan O'Brien's The Maze Runner Movies, Ranked
Image
What do young adult novel adaptations, post-apocalyptic movies, and films involving shadowy corporations messing around unscrupulously have in common? For one thing, they're all a dime a dozen. For another, they're all aspects of the trilogy of films adapted from "The Maze Runner," a series of novels by author James Dashner.

Like so much YA fiction from the '00s, Dasher's novels gained a passionately loyal fan following, leading to 20th Century Fox becoming interested in developing them for the big screen in the hope that the studio would have its very own "Hunger Games." The parallels between both franchises are certainly there on the surface: preteen-to-older-teen heroes being forced to participate in deadly encounters while fighting the scourge of authoritarianism. However, where "Hunger Games" and its films are far more politically and philosophically-minded, "The Maze Runner" goes in a much more genre flick direction. It's one of the...

Image
Exclusive: Paramount Pictures is in early development on an untitled H.G. Wells project from Wes Ball’s OddBall Entertainment, under its Paramount Players label.

While specific information on the Wells novel at its center hasn’t been disclosed, we hear that it will be a very loose adaptation stemming from the “mythology” that surrounds one of the writer’s most iconic titles. The film’s logline is being kept under wraps. A director has not yet been attached.

Rising screenwriter Laura Gillis is writing the screenplay, based off of a previous incarnation by T.S. Nowlin. OddBall Entertainment’s Ball, Joe Hartwick Jr. and Hank Wyler will produce, under their first-look deal with the studio, alongside Nowlin.

The Adam Project – Review
Image
What if you could make your peace with your own history? What if you could, as an adult, go back and make peace with your younger self, and make your peace with the parents we failed to understand when we were growing up? What if you could go back and reconnect with your parents with the benefit of a lifetime of wisdom and perspective? These are the questions director Shawn Levy asks in his latest film The Adam Project. Starring Ryan Reynolds, Walker Scobell, Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo, Zoe Saldaña and Catherine Keener, the film is the story of a time-traveling pilot Adam Reed (Reynolds) who teams up with his younger self, (Scobell), and his late father, Louis Reed (Ruffalo) to come to terms with his past, and losses, while saving the future.

In this throwback to the sci-films from the 80’s, the filmmaker proves with The Adam Project the power of nostalgia.

This involves his mother (Jennifer Garner), his wife (Zoe Saldana), his father’s business partner (Catherine Keener) and dear old Dad himself (Mark Ruffalo).

‘The Adam Project’ Review: Ryan Reynolds Travels Back in Time in Flimsy Movie That’s All Too Modern
Image
“Enjoy yourselves,” said the ancient Romans (and the great early 20th century singer Guy Lombardo), “it’s later than you think.” Those words are a frequent refrain in the latest film from director Shawn Levy and star Ryan Reynolds, a sweet and snarky action-comedy which — in keeping with the duo’s similarly high-concept “Free Guy” — is only self-aware to a certain point.

On the one hand, “The Adam Project” recognizes that its star’s wounded sarcasm is the perfect fit for an Amblin-esque adventure about a swole fighter pilot who travels back in time in order to team up with his scrawny 12-year-old self. On the other hand, this exhaustingly overstuffed Netflix spectacle is so busy trying to fuse the temporal antics of “Back to the Future” into the space-age heroism of “Star Wars” — and to do so in a way that will keep people from clicking over to “Love Is Blind...

The Adam Project Review: The Netflix Algorithm Spews Out Hollow, Formless Sci-Fi Adventure
Jennifer Garner, Ryan Reynolds, Mark Ruffalo, Zoe Saldaña, and Walker Scobell in The Adam Project (2022)
The Adam Project, the latest big-budget Netflix release you likely haven’t heard of until now, opens with a bit of text explaining that “Time travel exists. You just don’t know it yet.” Such vague emptiness is exactly the “this could apply to literally hundreds of movies” vibe you’ve just strapped yourself in for over this 100-plus-minute journey—it possesses the magic touch of vanishing from your mind immediately as it’s happening.

Directed by Shawn Levy from a script by Jonathan Tropper, T.S. Nowlin, Jennifer Flackett, Mark Lewin, and probably a dozen-ish other hands in the Netflix offices, it stars (you guessed it) Ryan Reynolds as Adam Reed, a time-traveling fighter pilot we’re introduced to as he’s disobeying orders from his superior, Maya Sorian (Catherine Keener), in the year 2050. He jumps back in time, desperate to sort out something that will change the future, but...

Jennifer Garner plays Adam’s mother, marking a “13 Going on 30” reunion alongside Ruffalo. Catherine Keener and Zoe Saldaña also star.

“The Adam Project” is written by Jonathan Tropper, T.S. Nowlin, Jennifer Flackett, and Mark Levin, with David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, Shawn Levy, and star Reynolds serving as producers.

Ryan Reynolds Saves the Future With His Childhood Self in Netflix’s ‘The Adam Project’ Trailer
Image
Ryan Reynolds is ready to go back to the past.

Netflix has released the first trailer for “The Adam Project,” a new sci-fi action movie starring Reynolds and directed by Shawn Levy.

The film stars Reynolds as Adam Reed, a fighter jet pilot from the future. After an accident sends him traveling through time, he winds up in the year 2022, when he was a 12-year old boy (played by Walker Scobell) struggling in school after the apparent disappearance of his father (played by Mark Ruffalo). Jennifer Garner portrays Adam’s mom, and the cast is rounded out by Catherine Keener, Zoe Saldana and Alex Mallari Jr.

‘The Adam Project': Ryan Reynolds Meets His Childhood Self in First Teaser for Netflix’s Sci-Fi Adventure (Video)
Deadpool, Bruce Banner and Gamora are all finally sharing a screen together — but not in a Marvel project. The first teaser for Netflix’s “The Adam Project” has arrived, teaming up Ryan Reynolds, Mark Ruffalo, Zoe Saldana and more in a time-traveling adventure.

In the movie, Adam Reed (Reynolds) is a fighter pilot who accidentally crash lands in present-day 2022. Of course, in the timeline of the movie, Adam was only 12 years old in 2022. Now, he must team up with his past self “on a mission to save the future.”

You can watch the full teaser for “The Adam Project” in the video above.

To be fair, it’ll take more than just one adult and his 12-year-old self to fix things. Adam has a partner, played by Zoe Saldana. He also needs to seek out his father, who’s played by Mark Ruffalo. Evidently, there’s a bit of drama in the family,...

That’s because the project that was tailor-made to be a big screen blockbuster bypassed a theatrical release to premiere as an exclusive streaming offering on Netflix. While the film had its obstacles with critics (our own review was no exception), the streaming giant quickly greenlit a sequel, which is now moving forward with a director.

Louis Leterrier is in talks to occupy the director’s chair for the untitled Bright sequel, according to THR. Should the deal be finalized, the French helmer would step in for David Ayer, who directed the first film coming off two high-profile (theatrically-released) efforts, Suicide Squad (2016) and Fury (2015). While ceding the director’s chair for the sequel, Ayer will return as a producer and...

Louis Leterrier is in negotiations to direct Bright 2 for Netflix, which is bringing back Will Smith and Joel Edgerton to reprise their roles, sources tell Collider. David Ayer directed the original, which was written by Max Landis. Ayer may not be returning to direct the sequel but he did co-write the script with Evan Spiliotopoulos, while T.S. Nowlin contributed a rewrite. Ayer is also producing Bright 2 with Eric Newman and Bryan Unkeless. Though Landis is not involved with the sequel, he is expected to retain some type of credit, seeing as how he created the characters. …...

Leterrier will take over from David Ayer, who directed the first film from 2017 and was previously attached for the sequel but has been tied up with other projects, including a remake of “The Dirty Dozen” at Warner Bros.

Smith and Edgerton will return for the sequel and reprise their roles as a human detective who has to work with an orc police officer in a modern-day Los Angeles populated by humans and mystical creatures.

Bright 2 Moves Forward at Netflix with Incredible Hulk Director
Image
Bright 2 is finally moving forward at Netflix. The sequel has been in development for more than two years now with few updates provided in the meantime. Now we have word that the streaming service is narrowing in on a director as Louis Leterrier is in talks to helm the sequel. Should this come to pass, it would put a major piece of the puzzle in place and bring us one step closer to Will Smith and Joel Edgerton reuniting for another round of fantasy-based cop adventures.

According to a new report, Louis Leterrier is in negotiations with Netflix for Bright 2. David Ayer (Suicide Squad) directed the first movie but will not be returning to helm the sequel. Ayer did, however, co-write the screenplay alongside Evan Spiliotopoulos (Beauty and the Beast), with T.S. Nowlin (Maze Runner: The Death Cure) providing a rewrite.

There is on word on how soon production could begin,...

Netflix is in talks with French director Louis Leterrier for the fantasy actioner “Bright 2,” with Will Smith and Joel Edgerton reprising their roles.

Leterrier’s credits include the two “Transporter” titles, “Now You See Me,” “Clash of the Titans” and “Unleashed.” He executive produced and directed the Netflix series “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.”

Netflix is planning to begin shooting the sequel once it’s able to start production when the impact of the coronavirus pandemic eases.

The script for “Bright 2” is written by David Ayer and Evan Spiliotopoulos, with a rewrite by T.S. Nowlin. Producers are Ayer, Eric Newman and Bryan Unkeless.

Ayer directed the original 2017 film, set in an alternative universe in Los Angeles, where humans and creatures called orcs co-exist. Smith portrayed an Lapd officer and Edgerton played his orc partner. The duo confronted racism and corruption in a world where a few individuals...

Louis Leterrier Making Netflix Deal To Direct Will Smith & Joel Edgerton In ‘Bright 2’
Image
Exclusive: Netflix is negotiating with Louis Leterrier to direct Bright 2, the sequel to the 2017 film that kicked off the streamer’s feature film franchise launch aspirations.

David Ayer directed the first film and was attached to the sequel, but he has been focused on rewriting to direct Dirty Dozen for Warner Bros, and he has other projects at Netflix.

The film will reteam Will Smith and Joel Edgerton in the tale of mismatched crime fighting partners, one of whom is an orc. The script is by Ayer and Evan Spiliotopoulos with a rewrite by T.S. Nowlin. The pic is produced by Ayer, Eric Newman and Bryan Unkeless.

Netflix set sights on a sequel in early 2018 after the original was released and watched by a record estimated 60 million, with far and away the most views for a Netflix film in its first week. Those numbers have been eclipsed by a...

Ryan Reynolds Reunites with Free Guy Director for New Time Travel Movie
Ryan Reynolds at an event for Deadpool 2 (2018)
Ryan Reynolds is teaming up with Free Guy director Shawn Levy again for a new time travel adventure movie. This will be the next project for both the star and the director, with a 4th quarter production start planned on the East Coast. However, it is unclear if the movie will be able to begin production on time, due to the world's current state of affairs. Free Guy was supposed to hit theaters this summer, but will now come out at the end of the year instead.

Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy or partnering with Skydance for the untitled time travel movie, which was at one time referred to as Our Name is Adam. The project has been in development since 2012 and Tom Cruise was briefly attached at one point in time, though that obviously did not work out. The new version of the script was written by Jonathan Tropper,...

Ryan Reynolds And Stranger Things Ep Team Up For New Time Travel Movie
Ryan Reynolds at an event for Deadpool 2 (2018)
Ryan Reynolds must have enjoyed working with director Shawn Levy on Free Guy, because the two are now set to team up on a time travel action-comedy, which given Levy’s track record, will no doubt be an effects-heavy blockbuster designed with a family audience in mind.

Now firmly established as one of the biggest movie stars in the world, Reynolds also seems to be making a play to feature in as many big budget projects as possible, and hasn’t starred in anything that cost less than $50 million to produce since 2016’s forgotten action thriller Criminal. While their latest team-up doesn’t have an official title as of yet, the concept has been kicking around Hollywood for close to a decade. In fact, back in 2012, Tom Cruise was circling the idea when it was called Our Name is Adam.

The earliest version of the script came from The Maze Runner’s T.S. Nowlin,...

Ryan Reynolds has come aboard to star in and produce an untitled time-travel movie at Skydance with Shawn Levy directing.

Skydance is planning a fourth-quarter shoot. Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger will produce along with Reynolds and Levy.

Reynolds will star as man who must travel back in time to get help from his 13-year-old self. The duo will also encounter their late father. Jonathan Tropper is writing the script as a new version of T.S. Nowlin’s “Our Name is Adam.”

The project re-teams Reynolds and Levy, who collaborated on the science-fiction action comedy, “Free Guy,” which will be released through Disney’s 20th Century label on Dec. 11. “Free Guy” was recently delayed from its initial release date of July 3 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure’ DVD Review
Stars: Dylan O’Brien, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Kaya Scodelario, Giancarlo Esposito, Rosa Salazar, Aidan Gillen, Walton Goggins, Ki Hong Lee, Barry Pepper, Will Poulter, Patricia Clarkson | Written by T.S. Nowlin | Directed by Wes Ball

This third and final entry in the Maze Runner franchise gives the Ya series a rousing send-off, stream-lining the books’ overly complex plot in favour of a succession of exciting action set-pieces. It might be a little too long at a posterior-troubling two hours and twenty minutes, but better that than splitting the third part of the trilogy into two movies, like certain other dystopian teen movies we could mention.

To its credit, Maze Runner: The Death Cure assumes audiences are already familiar with the events of 2014′s The Maze Runner and 2015′s The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, because otherwise, what are you doing here in the first place? To that end, the film opens in rip-roaring fashion,...

Watch ‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure’ Cast Honor Trilogy Director Wes Ball (Exclusive Video)
The “Maze Runer” trilogy of movies may not be your bag, but it’s certainly mine. And for the past four years, I’ve had a blast experiencing this tale of a horrible post-apocalyptic conservative dystopia taken down by children. In the present age, these stories somehow seem to gain more and more relevance, and that certainly was the case with “The Death Cure,” the third and final installment released in January.

TheWrap has exclusively obtained a clip from the special features on the home video release of “Maze Runner: The Death Cure” in which cast members Patricia Clarkson, Kaya Scodelario and Rosa Salazar honor director Wes Ball’s dedication to bringing these stories to life on the big screen, and Ball himself reflects on the experience.

The “Maze Runner” films are Ball’s first three gigs directing feature films, and he calls himself “lucky” for having been blessed with having the chance to work with this team on these particular projects.

‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’ Review
Stars: John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Jing Tian, Cailee Spaeny, Rinko Kikuchi, Burn Gorman, Adria Arjona, Max Zhang, Charlie Day | Written by Steven S. DeKnight, Emily Carmichael, Kira Snyder, T.S. Nowlin | Directed by Steven S. DeKnight

Rumours of the apocalypse’s cancellation were apparently premature as the robots vs monsters franchise is back for a second instalment, this time directed by Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight, with Guillermo del Toro serving as producer. The sequel is significantly less serious than its somewhat gloomy predecessor and it’s a lot more fun as a result.

Picking up ten years after the events of Pacific Rim, the film stars John Boyega as Jake “Son of Stacker” Pentecost, who’s turned his back on the Jaeger (i.e. giant robot) pilot program and now makes a living selling illicitly acquired robo-bits on the black market. When he meets scrappy scavenger Amara Namani (Cailee Spaeny...

Film Review: More Action, Less Enjoyment in ‘Pacific Rim Uprising’
Chicago – The giant robot film genre is in trouble. It wasn’t enough that “Transformers” has ground it to dust, but now the “Pacific Rim” sequel is going the same direction. There is action-a-plenty in the followup to Guillermo Del Toro’s fun and light first film, that lightness is missing in “Pacific Rim Uprising.”

Rating: 3.0/5.0

It’s not a bad film, it’s just a conventional one. Del Toro did sort of an anti-Transformers take in the first Pacific Rim, applying his signature of myth and fairy tale to giant robots versus Godzilla-like creatures. He also produces this one, and first time feature director Steven S. DeNight helms and co-writes this latest adventure. There are folks from the first film, including a hyper Charlie Day (time to switch to decaf, dude) and Burn Gorman as scientists, but with a five year gap between stories it’s a constant, “now what his (or her) purpose?...

Pacific Rim 2 IMAX Posters Show Off New Jaeger Robots
Universal Pictures has revealed IMAX posters for Pacific Rim Uprising, which offer colorful looks at three of the new Jaegers who will be squaring off against the Kaiju monsters. These Jaegers are Bracer Phoenix, which brandishes a "centrifugal vortex cannon," Guardian Bravo, seen with its unique weapon known as the Elec-16 Arc Whip, and Gypsy Avenger, a new and improved version of Gypsy Danger from the original Pacific Rim movie. These one-sheets will be on display during IMAX screenings of Pacific Rim Uprising when it hits theaters next month.

These posters come just a day after the new making-of book was announced for the sequel, entitled The Art and Making Of Pacific Rim Uprising. The book will feature never-before-seen concept art along with behind-the-scenes images and insight from the creative team. The book will also chart the entire process of realizing director Steven S. Maze Runner 3 Dethrones Jumanji at the Box Office
Sony's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has dominated at the box office all month long, but, as expected, its reign came to an end this weekend, thanks to 20th Century Fox's The Maze Runner: The Death Cure. While it came in slightly under projections, the third installment in The Maze Runner trilogy based on the books by author James Dashner, took in an estimated $23.5 million, more than enough to take down Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which is still putting up strong numbers in its sixth frame in theaters, dropping just 15.9% to take in $16.4 million.

The Maze Runner: The Death Cure opened in 3,787 theaters, posting a solid $6,205 per-screen average. This movie continues the downward trend for this franchise, as the trilogy comes to an end. The Maze Runner opened in 2014, debuting with a $32.5 million opening weekend, with $102.4 million domestic and $348.3 million worldwide, from just a $34 million budget. The...
