Will There Be Time Bandits Season 2? All You Need to Know
Image
Taika Waititi really seems to be on a streak of losing shows and films. The filmmaker adapted the acclaimed Terry Gilliam film Time Bandits as a show for Apple TV+ but the series was canceled after its very first season. The adventure comedy series featured Lisa Kudrow, Kal-El Tuck, Charlyne Yi, and Waititi himself.

The series was co-created with Jemaine Clement and Iain Morris. While the show achieved critical acclaim, it did not seem to get the required viewership for a historic fiction sci-fi adventure series as big as that and hence was reportedly canceled. However, interest still remains within a small circle of fans.

Apple TV+ Cancels Time Bandits After Just One Season
Image
In surprising news, Apple TV+ has decided to pull the plug on Time Bandits. The series premiered on the streaming platform on July 24 and ended its 10-episode run less than a month ago, on August 21. The series, which is an adaptation of Terry Gilliams 1981 movie of the same name, has been canceled after just one season, per Deadline.

It's not possible to gauge the shows success (or lack thereof) because the viewership numbers have not been made public yet. But the rationale behind the cancellation seems to be the shows lackluster performance, as it did not make it to Nielsens Top 10 rankings. In an era where big-budget shows, especially in the fantasy genre, are under intense scrutiny, they must meet certain viewership criteria to justify continuation on their respective streaming services. Unfortunately, Time Bandits fell short of expectations, leading Apple TV+ to reconsider the shows future.

Taika Waititi's Time Bandits Cancelled At Apple TV+ After A Single Season
Image
Disappointing news for fans of Apple TV+'s small-screen take on Time Bandits here, as the streamer has decided not to move forward with a second season.

Deadline broke the news, which comes almost a month after the 10-episode first season of the family-friendly sci-fi comedy series ended its run.

Despite mostly positive reviews, (the series earned a pretty decent 78% on Rotten Tomatoes), Time Bandits did not attract enough viewers, and even though Apple TV+ does not share viewership data, the fact that the show was unable to crack Nielsen's Top 10 streaming rankings clearly factored into the streamer's decision not to renew it for a sophomore season.

We got word that Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi and frequent collaborator Jemaine Clement were in the process of developing a reimagining of Terry Gilliam's '80s sci-fi classic back in 2022, with Friends alum Lisa Kudrow set to star.

Taika Waititi's 78% Rt-Scored Show Canceled After One Season
Image
Taika Waititi's Time Bandits series has been canceled by Apple TV+. Loosely based on the 1981 Terry Gilliam movie of the same name, the series follows 11-year-old Kevin (Kal-El Tuck), an enthusiastic student of history whose encylopedic knowledge proves useful as he travels through time with an eccentric group of self-proclaimed bandits led by a woman named Penelope (Lisa Kudrow). Time Bandits' cast also included Waititi in the role of the Supreme Being.

Deadline confirmed that Apple TV+ made the decision to cancel Time Bandits despite its 78% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes. The series did not perform well enough on the streaming platform, including never making it into the Nielsen Top 10 streaming rankings. It did perform better in the U.K., which is also the modern-day setting where Kevin's story begins in the 2024 series. The cancelation comes at a time when studios are increasingly stingy about moving forward with streaming content.

‘Time Bandits’ Canceled After Single Season at Apple TV+
Image
Apple TV+ won’t reset the clock on Time Bandits.

The tech giant’s streaming service has canceled the series, an adaptation of a 1981 feature film by Terry Gilliam, after a single season. The news comes less than four weeks after Time Bandits completed its 10-episode first season on Aug. 21.

As is the case with most streaming series, viewing figures for Time Bandits aren’t publicly available. The show didn’t break into Nielsen’s top 10 original streaming series in the first four weeks of its run (Apple TV+ released two episodes per week). Critics were largely positive on the show; The Hollywood Reporter’s Daniel Fienberg wrote that particularly in the second half of the season, Time Bandits is “actively funny and clever and just a little bit emotional.”

Like the film, the series follows a young history buff (Kal-El Tuck) who’s recruited to join a band of...

Time Bandits' Future on Apple TV+ Revealed Weeks After Season 1 Finale
Image
The future of Time Bandits on Apple TV+ has been revealed. Unfortunately for fans of the series, it's not good news at all.

Per Deadline, it's been reported that Time Bandits has been canceled after one season. The news comes less than a month after the show ended its freshman season on Apple TV+, concluding on Aug. 21 after initially debuting on July 24. Consisting of 10 episodes in total, the first and only season released two episodes together on a weekly basis. While the show garnered a respectable 78% score on Rotten Tomatoes, its viewership was not particularly high, as Time Bandits failed to crack the Nielsen Top 10 rankings for streaming titles.

‘Time Bandits’ Canceled After One Season at Apple TV+
Image
“Time Bandits” has been canceled by Apple TV+ after one season, Variety has confirmed.

The fantasy series, starring Lisa Kudrow, follows a group of thieves and their newest recruit — an 11-year-old boy named Kevin (Kal-El Tuck) — hopping across time and space to plunder riches. Jemaine Clement, Iain Morris and Taika Waititi created the series adaptation of Terry Gilliam’s 1981 cult classic, with Clement and Morris serving as co-showrunners.

Along with Kudrow and Tuck, the cast includes Tadhg Murphy, Roger Jean Nsengiyumva, Charlyne Yi, Rune Temte, Rachel House, Kiera Thompson, James Dryden, Felicity Ward, Francesca Mills and Imaan Hadchiti.

Clement, Morris and Waititi wrote and directed select episodes of “Time Bandits” Season 1; they also executive produced alongside Garrett Basch, Jane Stanton for Handmade Films and Tim Coddington. The now-defunct Paramount TV Studios produced with Anonymous Content’s AC Studios and MRC Television.

In July, Morris spoke to Variety about introducing “Time Bandits” to a new audience.

‘Time Bandits’ Canceled By Apple TV+ After 1 Season

Time Bandits‘ latest adventure has come to an end. Apple TV+ has opted not to renew the series adaptation of Terry Gilliam’s cult classic film for a second season. The news comes almost a month after the 10-episode first season of the fantasy series starring Lisa Kudrow ended its run, released in batches of two episodes weekly.

The development is not entirely surprising. Despite the nostalgia factor and mostly favorable reviews (78% on Rotten Tomatoes), Time Bandits, created by Jemaine Clement, Iain Morris and Taika Waititi, did not attract large enough audience and was not able to crack Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming rankings.

After the initial round of the streaming wars where gaining market share was the sole objective, streamers have been applying a more disciplined approach in their shift to profitability,...

Time Bandits star Lisa Kudrow recently shared that Taika Waititi slid into her DMs to ask her if she would star in the Apple TV+ series. According to the former Friends star, getting her to sign on to the fantasy adventure project didn't take much convincing.

Time Bandits Review: Gathering Momentum
Image
Time Bandits Season 1 Episodes 7 and 8 are gathering steam as we close in on the final episodes, despite Episode 7 being a largely throw-away 50 minutes of fluff.

As a comparison with the original, which is perhaps something I should cease and desist doing, Taika Waititi’s series is essentially a stand-alone.

Having only the loosest association with its namesake, it’s better to view Apple TV’s version on its own merits.

(Courtesy of Apple TV+)

Certain remakes and adaptations will always have this problem, which is why the originals are almost always regarded as the superior rendition.

It took a little while for Time Bandits to find a semi-sort-of pathway through time. Though it’s been a bumpy ride, there is some semblance of cohesion coming together here near the end.

How ‘The Comeback’ Led to Lisa Kudrow’s Gender-Flipped Starring Role on ‘Time Bandits’
Image
A couple of years ago, Taika Waititi slid into Lisa Kudrow’s Instagram DMs with a once-in-a-lifetime proposition: How would she feel about visiting New Zealand for the first time and filming a fantasy show — a genre she had yet to explore — for six months?

It was an offer that Kudrow, who was born and raised in Los Angeles and doesn’t particularly love to travel for long stretches of time, couldn’t pass up. The show in question was Time Bandits — Waititi, Jemaine Clement and Iain Morris’ series adaptation of Terry Gilliam’s 1981 fantasy classic. The original film starred Gilliam’s Monty Python co-stars John Cleese and Michael Palin, as well as Sean Connery, Shelley Duvall and Ian Holm.

In the new Apple TV+ series, which premiered Wednesday, Kudrow stars as Penelope, the de facto leader of a ragtag group of thieves who is forced to journey through time and space with an 11-year-old,...

Time Bandits Co-Creator Iain Morris Discusses Reimagining Terry Gilliam’s Hilarious Family Adventure (Interview)
Image
The latest collaboration between Taika Waititi (Thor: Love and Thunder), Jemaine Clement (What We Do in the Shadows), and Iain Morris (The Inbetweeners) is Time Bandits — a new Apple TV+ show based on the 1981 film made by Monty Python’s Terry Gilliam. Considering the absurdist nature of Gilliam’s humor, Morris, Waititi, and Clement are a perfect fit to bring Time Bandits to a new generation.

We at FandomWire got the opportunity to speak with Time Bandits co-creator Morris about reimagining Terry Gillam’s cult classic family adventure, working with Waititi and Clement, and why fans and newcomers alike should be excited to see this new version of Time Bandits. ‘Time Bandits’ Boss Talks Introducing a ‘Lost Classic’ to a New Audience and Addresses Charlyne Yi’s Allegations
Image
To a generation of Brits, Iain Morris may forever be known as half of the duo that created “The Inbetweeners,” the wildly rude sitcom about a group of mostly unpopular teenage boys that ran from 2008-2010 and was followed by two hugely successful films.

But the multi-talented creative has been prolifically busy since then, reuniting some of the “The Inbetweeners” lead cast for BBC comedy series “White Gold,” creating another BBC comedy “First Team,” working on FX’s “What We Do in the Shadows,” helping write Taika Waititi’s soccer comedy “Next Goal Wins” and recently being tapped to direct Netflix rom-com feature “My Oxford Year.”

For the last few years, he’s also been hard at work on “Time Bandits,” Apple TV+’s small-screen reimagining of Terry Gilliam’s cult 1981 fantasy comedy about a young boy taken on an adventure through time with a band of thieves (mostly played...

‘Time Bandits’ Review: Lisa Kudrow Reigns in a Pleasant Yet Routine Remake
Image
When Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement team up, good things tend to happen. From “Flight of the Conchords” to “Wellington Paranormal,” and “What We Do in the Shadows” (the movie) to “What We Do in the Shadows” (the series), the two on- and off-camera talents have shown a knack for elevating mundane situations through fantastic creativity. “Conchords” heightens its band members’ everyday struggles for renown and romance with hysterical musical interludes. “Wellington” disrupts the humdrum duties of New Zealand cops by serving up cases with a supernatural twist. Stories in “Shadows” emerge from the perpetual boredom of vampire roommates who’ve grown tired of immortality’s tedium.

Much of the humor in their writing relies on characters reacting to extraordinary events with little more than a shrug, so adapting “Time Bandits” into a TV series seems like a good fit. Based “in part” on Terry Gilliam and Michael Palin’s 1981 film of the same name,...

Time Bandits (2024)
Image
Streaming on: Apple TV+

Episodes viewed: 10 of 10

On paper, it looks like the perfect comedy storm: a cult-classic post-Monty Python adventure from Terry Gilliam and Michael Palin, adapted and updated by the dudes behind What We Do In The Shadows and The Inbetweeners. But, for all its pedigree and Apple-funded VFX budget, this 21st-century Time Bandits doesn’t deliver the swag.

The main culprits are the titular gang. Portrayed in the original by dwarf performers including David Rappaport, Kenny Baker and Jack Purvis, the Bandits were an engagingly energetic crew, whose fractious antics powered much of the action-comedy (when the big-star cameos weren’t happening) — as loveable as they were amoral. Here, the noticeably ganglier likes of Lisa Kudrow, Roger Jean Nsengiyumva and Charlyne Yi fail to measure up.

The extended running time doesn’t do the concept any favours

This is mostly down to the new troupe’s oddly low-energy shtick,...

Time Bandits TV Review

Plot: Embark on a comedic, high-stakes journey through time and space with a ragtag group of thieves and their newest recruit: an eleven-year-old history nerd. Together, they set out on a thrilling quest to save the boy’s parents — and the world.

Review: The original 1981 Terry Gilliam film Time Bandits is a staple of movies for kids that go beyond being children’s films. Alongside The Goonies, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, The Neverending Story, Labyrinth, and more, Time Bandits took mature filmmaking and actors. They put them into a story that worked for younger and older audiences. Forty years later, we get a new take on Time Bandits from the comedic genius of Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement. Embracing that same approach to telling a story for kids that also appeals to adults, this new Time Bandits boasts better special effects, a more diverse array of historical places for the protagonists to visit,...

Time Bandits Review — Taika Waititi and Co. Reimagine the Cult Classic to Wondrous Result
Image
If you were looking for a list of the most influential comedy filmmakers of all time, it would absolutely not be complete without Terry Gilliam. Although Gilliam’s best-known work is his tenure with Monty Python, his 1980s family adventure Time Bandits has grown quite a cult following.

Now, three of the hottest voices in comedy today — Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), Jemaine Clement (What We Do in the Shadows), and Iain Morris (The Inbetweeners) — have created a new series based on the movie. It’s as enjoyable as one could hope, paying homage to the original while also standing on its own.

Time Bandits is a fun reimagining that stands on its own

Like the original movie, Time Bandits follows a young, history-loving kid who finds himself swept away on a wild adventure when a group of time-traveling bandits appear in his wardrobe. Although the story itself is a little thin,...

‘Time Bandits’ Review: Lisa Kudrow Is the Reluctant Boss in Apple TV+’s Giddy Time Travel YA Adventure
Image
If you had a superpower, what would it be? You could read people’s thoughts – but isn’t that a bit invasive? Teleportation would be nice — fly without the Tsa. And, for the really adventurous, there’s time travel. You could hang out with anyone from Vlad the Impaler to Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Of course, there’s the question that haunts the invisible man as well: Do your clothes travel with you?

With “Time Bandits,” a ten-part Apple TV+ fantasy series aimed at the YA audience and the young at heart, clothes, backpacks, a magic map of the universe and loot can make it through the portals between say, the Pleistocene Era and the Harlem Renaissance. Inspired by the manic and maniacal 1981 movie of the same name from Monty Python duo Terry Gilliam and Michael Palin and starring John Cleese, Sean Connery and the late Shelley Duvall, this TV adventure...

‘Time Bandits’ Review: Taika Waititi’s Apple TV+ Take on the Terry Gilliam Cult Classic Rewards Patience
Image
Thanks to Steven Spielberg and his various acolytes, ’80s kids didn’t lack for entertainment made directly for us. But that doesn’t mean we weren’t periodically traumatized by a Gremlins or Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom or, in the case of my younger brother, The ‘Burbs.

Nobody, though, specialized in making movies that were ostensibly for kids but definitely weren’t for all kids like Terry Gilliam. One of my first moviegoing memories is abruptly leaving a revival screening of Jabberwocky because it wasn’t the movie my parents thought it was. Audiences experienced similar unease with The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and, before that, 1981’s Time Bandits, a frequently playful juvenile romp that’s also nonstop dark imagery and narrative jagged edges. The film replicates the chaotic weirdness of childhood dreams, but resists any of the pat moralizing that often anchors kid-friendly storytelling.

Time Bandits Season 2 Is Already Being Written, Jemaine Clement Reveals
Image
Comedian and What We Do in the Shadows star Jemaine Clement has revealed some hugely exciting news regarding the upcoming serial remake of the cult hit Time Bandits, confirming that work has already begun on season 2. Clearly, Clement and his fellow creators Iain Morris and Taika Waititi are confident in what they have created, with the first season not due to debut until later this month. Speaking with Comicbook.com, Clement revealed that they are actually writing a second season as we speak. However, he does also acknowledge the cutthroat world of television, admitting that Time Bandits season 2 is far from a certainty, and it all depends on whether people tune into the first outing when it lands on Apple TV+ next week.

We are actually writing a second season, but it depends on if people watch the first season. If no one watches it, we throw it away in a bin.

If you could travel through time, who would you want to meet? Pirates? Neanderthals? Pure Evil? Well, with “Time Bandits,” you’ll meet them all — and Jemaine Clement even plays the latter.

Based on the 1981 Terry Gilliam film of the same name, Apple TV+’s new series sends young Kevin (Kal-El Tuck) on an adventure through time when he discovers that his bedroom is actually a “time egress.” That means that Penelope (Lisa Kudrow) and her gang of bandits can use it as a bit of a waystation while traveling through time to steal major artifacts.

According to Penelope, “nothing is too big for us to steal” — except maybe the Trojan horse. Along with Kevin the Time Bandits work together to save his parents, all while stealing the best items they can get their hands on throughout history.

You can watch the first trailer for “Time Bandits” in the video above.
