Today is Labor Day in the U.S., and in honor of one of the last vestiges of the American labor movement we’re taking the day off here at The A.V. Club. We’ll be back tomorrow with our reflections on the Twin Peaks finale—which you can read about and discuss in Emily L. Stephens’ review here—along with music reviews,…

The Netflix original series Stranger Things is taking the country by storm. Released just this past Friday, it’s already been binged by many who love its nostalgic throwback to the ’80s with a mashup of Amblin Entertainments, Stephen King stories, aural odes to Steven Spielberg and John Carpenter, and other genre mentions. (For those who are still going through the episodes, there’s the excellent reviews by Emily L. Stephens). It’s fun to pick out the influences of music, TV, books, and film on the series that creators the Duffer brothers have cooked into their homage. Now, thanks to a helpful (and alphabetical) guide by Vulture, fans can see all of the ways that certain films have played into the making of this pop culture phenomenon.

This week on the podcast, Emily L. Stephens of The A.V. Club joins Kate to discuss an entertaining week in TV, including a preview of Drunk History season three and interesting episodes of Married, Rick and Morty, and Review. Kate also takes another look at The Carmichael Show and Kate and Emily talk Mr. Robot, as well as diving surprisingly deep with Fear the Walking Dead and not-at-all-surprisingly deep with the Hannibal finale. Afterwards, Emily heads to the DVD Shelf for something completely different: a look at Monty Python’s Flying Circus.

Welcome back to This is Our Design. Time to start worrying? Since the recording of this podcast and the posting of it, Amazon and Netflix have announced that they’ve passed on Bryan Fuller’s arthouse series. Even if the worst possible things happen, though, we’ve hired billions of monkeys to develop future scripts for Hannibal, which doesn’t really matter if the show isn’t picked up by another network. Also, couldn’t we have used that money in a Kickstarter for the show or something? We didn’t think this through…
But co-hosts Sean Colletti and Kate Kulzick certainly think other things through this week with the help of Dennis Perkins and Emily L. Stephens, of Av Club fame. It’s an event-filled episode, including another iconic fight between Jack Crawford and Hannibal Lecter. Yet there’s plenty more to talk about, such as character motivations, the role of happiness,...

Ready For Their Close-Up: Six TV Characters Worthy of a Spin-Off
Television history is littered with the bodies of ill-advised spin-offs. Their corpses, copies of reviews and overnights crumpled in their clawed little hands, defile the memories of the successful shows that spawned them and serve as cautionary tales for every writer tempted to go to the same well twice… read the full article.
Why You Should Be Watching: You’re the Worst
When it debuted in early 2014 on FX, You’re the Worst unfortunately got lumped together with all the other shows about people in relationships that were in production or released around that time. You’re the Worst was a lower-key choice for the network: a small-scale character comedy that had none of the splashy, dramatic flare of other flagship shows. This tonal difference between the network and You’re the Worst was maybe why it was...
