Many years later, 2014's "Whiplash" stands out as one of the defining motion pictures of the 2010s. Damien Chazelle's masterclass of a psychological character drama telling the story of a young, ambitious jazz drummer, Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller), butting heads with his abusive instructor, Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons), was not the biggest box office success story on its initial release. Still, its legacy has endured thanks to an ever-growing audience that discovered it via DVD, Blu-ray, and streaming. The film was also nominated for five Academy Awards and won three, with Simmons, in particular, taking home the gold for his supporting turn as one of the greatest villains in cinematic history.
What many may not realize, however, is that Chazelle's movie is itself based on "Whiplash," the short film of the same name that the filmmaker had made just a year prior. The 18-minute short was the first iteration...

A sequel to “Jennifer’s Body” is in the works, at least according to Amanda Seyfried.
“I think we’re making another,” Seyfried told a fan at a Toronto screening of her new thriller “Seven Veils.” “I did not confirm it! I said, ‘I think’ … We’re working on it!”
The actress then winked at the delighted fan. The moment was captured in a TikTok video, which you can watch below.
Seyfried starred in the 2009 horror-comedy as Anita “Needy” Lesnicki, the nerdy friend of Jennifer (Megan Fox) who becomes possessed by a demon and starts chowing down on her male admirers at their high school. The onus is then on Needy to save the day and the lives of her classmates. The movie was directed by Karyn Kusama and has become a cult classic in the years since its release.
When the movie first came out, however, it was universally panned by critics.

There are many cult classics that fans have clamored to have a sequel made of, and there might be none bigger in recent memory than 2009's Jennifer's Body. The film was stifled by a poor marketing campaign that stalled its box office, but it did go on to become a cult hit in the years since its release as fans began to see writer Diablo Cody's true intentions for the movie. As the cult status of Jennifer's Body has grown, sequel news has continued to surface every so often, but fans might have just gotten the biggest hint yet that the follow-up is in the works from one of the film's stars, Amanda Seyfried.

More than 15 years later, Jennifer Check is ready for a resurrection.
Although Amanda Seyfried stopped short of confirming a sequel to her 2009 horror comedy Jennifer’s Body is in the works, she certainly gave fans of the Diablo Cody-written, Karyn Kusama-directed cult classic some hope.
“I think we’re making another one,” Seyfried told Bloody Disgusting. “I didn’t confirm it! I said, ‘I think.’ We’re working on it.”
In Jennifer’s Body, Needy (Seyfried) is BFFs with the titular mean girl played by Megan Fox, whose body becomes possessed by a succubus with a taste for teen boys after a botched sacrifice by a devil-worshipping boy band (led by Adam Brody).
Last year, Cody expressed optimism in a potential Jennifer’s Body 2 after hopes that her latest film Lisa Frankenstein would be the “final push that I need to actually make it happen. It’s hard to get things made these days.

In 2003, Bruce Almighty — the third collaboration between Tom Shadyac and Jim Carrey (following Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Liar Liar) — was released. The film follows Bruce Nolan (Carrey), an unlucky television reporter who yearns for sustenance. Fed up with his stifling white-collar existence, he constantly criticizes God, labeling him inept. Triggered, God (Morgan Freeman) appears to him and gives him spiritual powers for one week, daring him to do things differently. Because this is a Jim Carrey character, we don’t get to see any honorable acts. The free-spirited Bruce seizes the chance and uses the powers to inject adventure into his life in the most devious ways possible.

One of the standout memories from my last semester of college was hearing the strong word-of-mouth around the breakout from that year’s Sundance Film Festival, “Whiplash.” I can remember the excitement around a new, potentially generational filmmaker bursting onto the scene, as well as an intense, young actor starting to make his mark in films like “Rabbit Hole,” “The Spectacular Now,” and now this. Moreover, having just binged the HBO prison drama “Oz,” I was thrilled by the possibility of one its ensemble cast members, J.K. Simmons, taking on a role that required him to lean on his more sociopathic abilities.
The first time I saw the film, winner of both the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize, it was followed by a Q&a with Simmons in which he spoke on the animalistic nature of his character, jazz instructor Terence Fletcher, and how, despite Damien Chazelle’s youthful appearance,...

Preparations for the biggest film of 2022 were grueling for the entire cast. With strict training imposed by Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, and his co-stars flew for months before the filming for Top Gun: Maverick eventually kickstarted. But while in the case of Top Gun 2, the difficulties stemmed from the prolonged period of training, the opposite was the case for Whiplash, which shot him to prominence.

Not all great movies succeed at the box office; quality doesn't always equal profit. Timing and marketing play a big role in a movie's success, not just its content. Flops can become classics, with films like Scott Pilgrim & Blade Runner 2049 still being praised years later.
Movies shouldn't be defined by their financial performance, as some great movies from the 2010s were seen as commercial failures at the time. A movie's box office receipts don't always reflect its quality. Timing and marketing are two huge factors that can influence how much money a movie makes, and they are both completely out of the hands of the people who actually worked on the movie.
There have been plenty of great movies which bombed at the box office over the years, and the 2010s were no different. Huge directors like Martin Scorsese, Paul Thomas Anderson and Denis Villeneuve all had box office flops in the 2010s,...

Writing and directing a short is a potential passageway to creating a full-length feature film.
Aspiring directors use this medium to create a proof of concept on a small budget that can go on to win on the short film festival circuit and be picked up by investors, leading to larger projects and paving the way to a career in Hollywood.

Warning: The following contains major spoilers for Jennifer’s Body and Lisa Frankenstein.
Few female killers in the wide world of horror have been able to match the impact of Jennifer Check. Played by the incomparable Megan Fox, Diablo Cody’s teenage seductress rises from the ashes of a hideous crime and returns to wreak bloody vengeance on the teenage boys in her small town. Jennifer’s Body was initially dismissed as a vapid vehicle for a gorgeous star – an unfortunate parallel to the film’s own message – but Karyn Kusama’s teen horror comedy has finally found a devoted audience that appreciates its biting satire and unflinching look at the hell of teenage girlhood. Fifteen years later, Cody returns to the genre with a new heroine searching for power in a world built to dismiss her. Directed by Zelda Williams, Lisa Frankenstein follows a teenage girl desperate for acceptance who...

Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, The Lady Killers revisit Diablo Cody’s 2009 slice of horror, Jennifer’s Body.
“Hell is a teenage girl.”
By now it’s safe to say that the world was not ready for Jennifer’s Body when it first released in 2009. Call it bad marketing, Juno fatigue, or audience aversion to a female-led horror comedy, this progressive film not only bombed at the box office, it sent director Karyn Kusama to what she calls “movie jail” for the better part of the next decade. But nearly fifteen years later, this beloved film about female empowerment seems to have finally found its audience. Not only is it a prime example of Boys In Danger horror, but Kusama and writer Diablo Cody take...

We’ve all dated our fair share of bad boys. They win us over with their dreamy aloofness, then just when we’ve let our guard down, they turn out to be monsters in disguise. Horror has a long history of these roguish young lovers, some so bad they commit cold-blooded murder. But they’re not all monsters.
Every once in a while, a cinematic boyfriend manages to be attractive, kind, and non-murderous, all while supporting his girlfriend as she runs away from the film’s true villain. Diablo Cody returned to the horror-comedy genre with Lisa Frankenstein and is now declaring that her previous film, Jennifer’s Body, takes place in the same universe.
“I am just declaring that this movie takes place in the same universe,” Cody told Deadline during the premiere of Lisa Frankenstein. “I have decided that. I will not say that you’d see any overt references to that but I’m saying it.”
Jennifer’s Body is a 2009 horror comedy that Cody wrote starring Megan Fox in the titular role. The film follows a high school student who becomes demonically possessed following a sacrifice and kills her classmates to eat their flesh in order to survive. Amanda Seyfried, Johnny Simmons, J.K. Simmons, Amy Sedaris and Adam Brody also starred.

Jennifer's Body 2 faces a major challenge in bringing back Jennifer after her death in the first film. The potential focus for Jennifer's Body 2 could be on Needy and her manifestation of Jennifer's succubus powers. Jennifer's Body 2 would need to justify bringing Jennifer back after over a decade since the first film's release.
A sequel to Jennifer’s Body has been teased by writer Diablo Cody, but Jennifer’s Body 2 has a major challenge to overcome, if it happens. Back in 2009, the teen horror comedy film Jennifer’s Body was released, directed by Karyn Kusama and written by Diablo Cody. Jennifer’s Body is now considered a cult classic, but it took it years to achieve such status, and it had a rocky release and reception.

'Jennifer's Body' writer Diablo Cody is desperate to make a sequel. The 45-year-old filmmaker - who has written the likes of 'Juno' and 'Tully' in the past, as well as Zelda Williams' upcoming horror comedy 'Lisa Frankenstein' - admitted she has struggled to find someone to finance a revival of the 2009 Megan Fox-led cult classic. She told Bloody Disgusting's 'Boo Crew Podcast': "I wanna do a sequel. I am not done with 'Jennifer’s Body'."I just need to find… I need to partner with people who believe in it as much as I do and that hasn’t really happened yet."I need someone to believe in it who has a billion dollars.”The movie follows Fox as Jennifer, a teen who gets possessed by a demon after a rock band sacrifice her to make it big.The cast also...

Jennifer's Body sequel possibility has been revealed by writer Diablo Cody as she wants to make another movie and needs the right partners who believe in it. Cody admits initial "saltiness" at the film's failure in 2009, but is now happy with the positive reception it has gained in recent years. Jennifer's Body's marketing to men and focus on Megan Fox's sex appeal contributed to its initial underwhelming performance, but its messaging and ahead-of-its-time story have been praised by audiences, particularly young women.
Jennifer's Body gets an exciting sequel update from writer Diablo Cody, 15 years after its release. The horror-comedy followed a possessed high school student, Jennifer Check (Megan Fox), who begins feeding on male classmates, while disconcerting her childhood best friend Needy Lesnicki. Along with Fox, the cast of Jennifer's Body included Amanda Seyfried, Johnny Simmons, Adam Brody, Amy Sedaris, and J.K. Simmons. The film garnered mixed reactions...

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses several major plot developments throughout the animated series “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off,” currently streaming on Netflix.
On a bright day in late October, the creators of the new Netflix anime series “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off,” Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, sit inside a Los Angeles arcade bar, trying to look relaxed.
“This is going to be a relief,” Grabinski says. But he doesn’t look quite convinced.
On its face, their show is the second adaptation of O’Malley’s beloved “Scott Pilgrim” graphic novel series, about the titular 20-something Canadian, his new American girlfriend, Ramona, and his quest to defeat her seven evil exes to stay with her. The first adaptation, of course, is director Edgar Wright’s 2010 cult movie “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” But even though the entire cast of that film — including Chris Evans, Brie Larson, Jason Schwartzman and Aubrey Plaza — returned to voice their characters,...

Scott Pilgrim is back, but not in the way anyone expected. The new Netflix animated series “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” is both a continuation of the “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” story and a complete recontextualization of what transpired, twisting and morphing the source material into something completely new. And who better to do it than the author responsible for creating “Scott Pilgrim” in the first place?
The anime “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” is created by Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, and while it begins similarly to “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” a shocking twist at the end of Episode 1 soon takes this story in a different direction.
Edgar Wright, who co-wrote and directed the 2010 film adaptation “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” is involved in this new series as an executive producer and he also helped bring a big piece of the puzzle together: the cast.

Edgar Wright's Cornetto Trilogy is one of those movie trilogies that is linked in nearly every way except narratively. In other words, while visual elements, themes, actors and even jokes repeat between 2004's "Shaun of the Dead," 2007's "Hot Fuzz" and 2013's "The World's End," the films don't actually share any characters or even take place in the same universe. That's because it was formed as a joke in and of itself at first, with a throwaway reference to the Italian mini-ice cream cones in "Shaun" leading to Wright and actor/co-writer Simon Pegg attempting to emulate (and lightly parody) other thematic trilogies such as the "Three Colours" trilogy by Krzysztof Kieślowski.
Ever since "The World's End," there's been no further reference to Cornettos or the characters and events in the Trilogy in Wright's work — until now. As Wright's film adaptation of creator Bryan Lee O'Malley's "Scott Pilgrim" series of comics,...

This post contains spoilers for "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" and "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World."
You might have varied expectations from "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" — the animated Netflix series that is based on the "Scott Pilgrim" graphic novels by Bryan Lee O'Malley — but it is not a recreation of 2010's "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World." The film, rightfully, is beloved for various reasons throughout its journey from box-office bomb to cult classic, be it its fun videogame-style aesthetics or the unabashed celebration of its quirky, inventive core. Instead of using the film as a base to expand upon its arcade-fighting structured narrative, "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" completely flips the script and dives right into mystery-thriller territory while still retaining the quirks of the original.
The ensemble cast from the film adaptation has returned for this new adventure, lending more immersion to this fresh story from the get-go, as these are...

(Editor’s note: The following article contains mild overarching plot spoilers for “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.”)
After endless reboots, sequels, and revivals, fans of big movies and TV shows aren’t clamoring for more the way they once were. But with “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off,” Netflix and creators Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski show that a franchise reset doesn’t mean the death of creativity or more of the same; it can be a fresh opportunity for a beloved property like “Scott Pilgrim” to completely revamp itself and find a brand new audience — while still satisfying old fans.
With one general spoiler for the entire series ahead, “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” is not the story of O’Malley’s six graphic novels, which wrapped up in the same year as Edgar Wright’s big-screen adaptation “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” — and it’s not that movie either. Do you feel that? The disturbance in the distance, in the general direction of Toronto, Canada? That's a sign that the Scott Pilgrim universe is changing. Fans have known for a while now to expect something slightly different from "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off," as Edgar Wright previously noted (via Empire) that the show "doesn't just expand the universe, but also... well, just watch it." Still, I'm not sure anyone anticipated the show being quite so much of a departure from the original, especially with all those deceptively faithful trailers Netflix dropped.
If you're somehow reading this without having watched the new season in its entirety, this is your sign to stop here and go catch up. Everyone else: let's unpack what we just saw, shall we? This epic reimagining of the Scott Pilgrim story comes straight from original comic author Bryan Lee O'Malley himself, who co-created and co-wrote the new show with BenDavid Grabinski.

Editor’s Note: This review contains spoilers.
From its marketing and anime-styled opening credits, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off could be confused for a straightforward adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series, albeit one determined not to step on the toes of Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Many scenes from the Netflix series, particularly in the first episode, are staged almost identically to their equivalents in Wright’s 2010 film, and the entire cast returns to voice their animated counterparts. Once again, Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) is poised to fight the seven evil exes of his dream girl, Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead).
By the time the first episode concludes, however, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off has firmly announced its intention to go in another direction, as well as clarified the meaning of its title in the process: that Scott Pilgrim is nowhere to be found.

Scott Pilgrim is back! The entire original cast of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is returning to reprise all of their roles in the new Netflix anime series titled Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. The series is being developed by the original comics creator, Bryan Lee O’Malley.
Since Scott Pilgrim vs. the World came out after the comics ended in 2010, the IP has maintained a healthy cult following with fans reading and rereading the graphic novels. But no big Scott Pilgrim property has come out since then, so you can imagine how O’Malley’s biggest fans are pretty thirsty by now. While it will be based on the comics, this new production will give all the fans a unique story and expand the world of Scott Pilgrim into something new. The trailer for Season 1 of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off offers a new look at the adaptation, which will be more than just the graphic novel animated.

It’s a battle of the exes like you’ve never seen before in the first full look at Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, the new anime series from Netflix.
The two-minute teaser for the show, created for television by executive producers and co-showrunners Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, debuted during New York Comic Con on Saturday. As part of the hour-long panel, O’Malley and Grabinski not only presented the trailer and teased the series, but confirmed that Julian Cihi will voice the Katayanagi Twins (Kyle and Ken).
The trailer takes fans back to Toronto “not too long ago” as Scott asks out Ramona Flowers, the “girl of my dreams.” But in order to date her, Scott must defeat her “seven evil exes.” Electric battles and even more electric guitar riffs set up a new chapter in the Scott Pilgrim saga, which sees the return of the live-action cast as their respective characters.
