Meet the Makers: Going Dutch and Animal Control
There are plenty of similarities to be found between Fox’s two live-action comedies, Joel McHale’s “Animal Control” and Denis Leary’s “Going Dutch.” Both are single-camera workplace comedies with characters in uniform: A quirky group of animal control workers in Seattle on “Animal Control,” and a quirky group of U.S. Army soldiers stationed on a tiny Netherlands base on “Going Dutch.” Making things even more personal, McHale’s “Community” co-star Danny Pudi now stars opposite Leary on “Going Dutch.”
So how about a crossover inside the Fox comedyverse? “It makes perfect sense,” Leary said during the Variety FYC TV Fest. “The guys who are the creators of ‘Animal Control’ are guys I’ve worked with before. Great writers. And we actually discussed it at some point last year. So let’s talk Fox into it. But Fox hasn’t mentioned it.

Six seasons and a movie is all us Community fans have been asking for and wanting. We've got the six seasons, though we're still eagerly waiting for the reunion film that's sure to be a hit at Peacock. Since September 2022 when news was confirmed that the Community movie was happening, we've been wondering not just when it'll be released, but when filming would actually start. Now with one of the star's current shows getting picked up, this could be bad news for the project.
Joel McHale who played Jeff Winger currently stars in the comedy series Animal Control on Fox. The third season finished airing recently, and the show has now been picked up and renewed for a season 4, per TVLine. This of course makes us happy for the actor. We love to see them all succeed! But, the renewal news does have us thinking about Community: The Movie and McHale's upcoming availability.

Colonel Quinn is staying put for the 2025-26 TV season. Fox has renewed Going Dutch for a second season. The sitcom's first season of 10 episodes finished airing in March.
A military comedy series, the Going Dutch TV show stars Denis Leary, Taylor Misiak, Danny Pudi, Laci Mosley, and Hal Cumpston, with Dempsey Bryk, Joe Morton, and Catherine Tate in recurring roles. The story follows arrogant, loudmouth U.S. Army Colonel Patrick Quinn (Leary), reassigned to the Netherlands after an epically unfiltered rant. There, he is punished with a command position at the world's least strategically significant army base. It’s notable for its Michelin Star-commissary, top-notch bowling alley, lavender-infused laundry, and the best (and only) fromagerie in the U.S. Armed Forces. Surrounded by a diverse group of military misfits, the colonel tries to reinstate discipline and professionalism with the...

Two shows have been guaranteed to continue on Fox while another wasn't so lucky. Unfortunately for the latter, it's going to be a one-season run.
Per Deadline, Rescue Hi-Surf has been canceled after one season. The show, which follows Hawaiian lifeguards, wrapped up its first season on March 31. As the show was not a breakout success on the level of Doc, which was renewed for a 22-episode second season, the decision was made not to move forward with a second season.
It's an unfortunate update for fans of the show, especially as it debuted strong with a premiere that pulled in 4.7 million Live+Same Day viewers. According to the new report, there had still been consideration to renew the series, in part due to the involvement of producer John Wells. The producer's previous work includes titles like ER, The West Wing, and The Pitt. However, the series was also expensive...

Going Dutch is returning for a second tour of duty. The freshman Fox sitcom has been renewed for a second season at the network. Deadline reports that both Going Dutch and its network stablemate, Animal Control, will be returning next season. The series' first season is now streaming on Hulu.
Deadline reports that although the Denis Leary-led series' ratings were not spectacular, the fact that the series is produced and owned by Fox may have played a part in the network's decision. Fox is also selling the series internationally; unlike many sitcoms, it is an international production, with a military base in Ireland standing in for Garrison Stroopsdorf, the fictional US Army base in Holland that serves as the show's primary setting. Additionally, Going Dutch and Animal Control are the only live-action sitcoms currently on Fox. This may also mean that Fox may not order any new half-hour comedies for the upcoming TV season.

Fox is sticking with laughs. The network has renewed its two live-action comedy series Animal Control and Going Dutch.
Animal Control, which stars Joel McHale, is returning for a fourth season, while Going Dutch starring Denis Leary returns for its second. Both single-camera shows, which are owned by Fox, will return in the 2025-26 season.
The renewal of Animal Control is not a surprise; the show remains Fox’s live-action comedy flagship and was the network’s first fully owned live-action series to break out. In addition, it has sold the show in more 70 international territories including in the UK to Channel 4, in Australia to Foxtel and Binge, in Canada to CBC and in New Zealand to Tvnz.
The network said that with in-season streaming on Hulu, it more than doubles its Live+Same Day ratings.

Marvel Studios ruled the cinematic landscape from 2008 until around 2019, thanks in no small part to the novelty of its shared universe, a concept every film studio tried and failed to mimic. Beginning with Jon Favreau's "Iron Man," the Marvel Cinematic Universe successfully propelled popular heroes and villains to the big screen, culminating with enormous blockbuster events in the form of "Avengers" movies, not to mention standout hits like Ryan Coogler's "Black Panther" and Jon Watts' "Spider-Man: No Way Home."
More impressively, the MCU made frequent use of the ultimate gimmick: cameos, often arising during mid-credit scenes, which usually introduced or teased new characters like Thanos (Josh Brolin) and the Collector (Benicio del Toro), who would often go on to play vital roles in later pictures. In fact, one could argue the MCU took off due to Samuel L. Jackson's surprising appearance as Nick Fury in "Iron Man.

"Community" was always a great show, but the moment it elevated to god-tier status was when it introduced the concept of a Paintball Episode (an idea that, sadly, the "Community" movie will not revisit when/if it comes to pass). That's when an otherwise-normal sitcom suddenly has its characters start shooting at each other with paintball guns, complete with genuinely impressive action cinematography. Why doesn't every sitcom do stuff like this? Because they lack the audacity.
"Community" would do three more paintball episodes throughout its run, all of them featuring at least one moment that's so cool it'll make you forgive the show for any of its other faults. Are you mad at how the series dragged out the romance between Jeff (Joel McHale) and Annie (Alison Brie) for six seasons? Well, at least the scene where the Dean (Jim Rash) recreates the "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" elevator fight...

Mythic Quest, the Apple TV+ series partly created by It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day, is officially ending its journey, as the show will end after its fourth season. However, even though the series itself will done, the creators are going to ensure that the loyal fans will get a nice surprise that will give the show the send-off they deserve.
The fourth season of Mythic Quest just concluded last month. Yet, the finale, “Heaven and Hell” wasn’t meant to be a series finale. Thus, a revised version set to air this week will serve as a true conclusion.
A joint statement was issued by McElhenney, Mythic Quest co-creator Megan Ganz and EP/co-star David Hornsby. “Endings are hard. But after four incredible seasons, Mythic Quest is coming to a close. We’re so proud of the show and the world we got...

Mythic Quest is logging off for good. The chaotic, code-crashing comedy from Rob McElhenney has officially been cancelled. But let’s face it: the biggest plot twist wasn’t in the show. It was the behind-the-scenes rage from actual game devs.
Turns out, while we were laughing at broken builds and ego clashes, some real-world developers were grinding their teeth. McElhenney might’ve wrapped up his pixelated sitcom, but his legacy’s stirring the pot in the gaming industry like a troll in a dev forum.

It's always a little awkward when you tell someone about a celebrity's death and that person has never heard of them to begin with. It's the same way with TV shows. "Have you heard that Swagger was canceled? "No, I haven't heard of Swagger to begin with." That's often the case with Apple TV+ shows, which are some of the most wonderfully produced and star-studded series since the days of streaming began. The problem is, most people have never heard of them, give or take Ted Lasso and Severance. Well, if you haven't heard of Mythic Quest, it's a delightful show, and you should watch it, though it's a little too late now. The series, which recently ended its fourth season (and a brief anthologized spin-off), has been canceled.
Created by three of the very funny minds behind It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Mythic Quest had a lot of people rooting for it.

Having the chance to get in on the ground floor of one of the most unique and cult-beloved sitcoms of the 21st century sure would have been cool. Cool, cool, cool.
Despite the sad fact that neither he nor Community ever got their flowers from mainstream America during the show’s initial run, Chicago-born actor and director Danny Pudi’s performance as Abed Nadir, the idiosyncratic, pop-culture-obsessed, fourth-wall-breaking brainiac of the greatest study group in sitcom history, is one of those iconic acting roles that becomes inseparable from the artist who nailed it. Just as no one else could have possibly been as perfect a fit for Frasier Crane as Kelsey Grammer and only Larry David could play Larry David on Curb Your Enthusiasm, Pudi’s portrayal of Abed is what made the character such an impactful part of Community’s legacy.
However, similar to how Bob Odenkirk came close...

Six seasons and a movie may not be enough for Community fans or Joel McHale!
When it comes to cult comedies, Community is in a class all by itself. Premiering on NBC in 2009, the Dan Harmon-created comedy at first looked like a simple sitcom premise. Jeff (Joel McHale) is a lawyer who loses his job when it's discovered his degree doesn't count. He thus enrolls in Greendale Community College to earn a real degree.
Joel forms a study group of quirky students, played by Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Chevy Chase, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, and Donald Glover. Ken Jeong and Jim Rash also star.
While the show had humor from the start, it would soon evolve into one of the wilder comedies on television. Every character was made into an offbeat individual, with episodes playing as mockumentaries, parodies/homages to famous movies and TV shows, and unpredictable stories...

Community fans keep waiting for the beloved sitcom to honor its "six seasons and a movie" promise as the long-gestating film adaptation remains on standby. However, when the film finally makes its Peacock debut, Joel McHale says he and his cast mates are "game" for continuing the franchise.
Speaking with Screen Rant, McHale teased the possibility of the Community series making a comeback once the anticipated movie is released. "I think there are some of us that would love to keep going, and I would be like, 'Great, if you guys want to do episodes, let us know,'" he said. "I think that'll probably depend on the success of a movie, but I think if there's enough of a demand to do more. I don't know what it would look like, but obviously the movie would have to inform a lot of that."

Sitcoms have a harder time than ever to really catch on to what the public wants. It's sort of a genre stable that viewers need a few seasons to get to know the characters and storylines they'll be enjoying. Unfortunately, the market is so competitive today that it's almost impossible for many new sitcoms to survive past one season. Many fresh and hilarious comedy shows have fallen by the wayside only because of low viewership, leading to a show's eventual premature cancelation. On top of that, no other sitcoms have it harder than the ones on network television, such as Fox's brand-new sitcom Going Dutch.
Going Dutch was created by Joel Church-Cooper and stars Denis Leary alongside a massive cast of hilarious characters in a show that seemingly fits Leary's charismatic and brash personality to a T. The show premiered right after the New Year on January 2, 2025, and was met with positive reviews.

Plaion Pictures has announced that American Dreamer, a new dark comedy starring Peter Dinklage as a new homeowner who gets more than he bargained for, is now available on digital. Dinklage plays Dr. Phil Loder, a low-level economics professor who has always wanted to own a home yet has never been able to afford it. That changes when he runs into a childless old widow, played by Shirley MacLaine, who is willing to sell him her entire mansion for practically nothing. It’s amazing! It’s a dream come true! Wait…is there any catch to this? Almost assuredly, but that’s something Phil will have to find out for himself. It feels like it’s been a While since I’ve seen MacLaine show up in anything. Thirty years ago she was so culturally relevant that parodies of her were always appearing in the cartoons I watched, with her...

Last month, The New Yorker published Dexter Filkins’ exhaustive article on “The U.S. Military’s Recruiting Crisis.” It seems the titular failure to enlist new recruits in sufficient numbers has compromised our readiness to defend the country in the event of an actual war, never mind fulfill promises past administrations have made to the governments of other nations.
Maybe that problem would be solved if troops could be posted at Stroopsdorf, the U.S. service base that provides the setting for Going Dutch. Stroopsdorf doesn’t have: strict requirements on fitness or hair length. Any apparent need to use a tower that’s been colonized by local wildlife. Guns. Stroopsdorf does have: bowling. Laundry. Cheeseworks. Silent discos. The best dining facility in the military. The highest morale in the army. If we ever find out they get U.S. TV channels via satellite, I might look into moving there myself.

Around this time last year, America caught a raging case of Challengers fever. The film, from Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino, portrays a trio of aspiring pro tennis players — pals Patrick (Josh O’Connor) and Art (Mike Faist) and Tashi (Zendaya) — jumping around in time from their frisky late teens to their resigned thirties with several stops in between. To reduce a gripping thriller to a gross oversimplification: everyone is in love with everyone else, and the sexy possibilities made it a meme overnight. What those memes acknowledged was what the movie boldly states: any love triangle is less interesting than three hot characters just getting it on together.
Since Fox’s Thursday night comedies premiered their latest seasons back in January — Season Three for Animal Control, and Season One for Going Dutch — both have seemed like they learned the lessons of Challengers. But did they really? These...

The long-gestating Community movie remains on the backburner as its stars' schedules clash. However, star Joel McHale offers a positive progress report on the upcoming feature-length adaptation of the hit sitcom while hilariously revealing a spoiler.
Speaking on Jesse Tyler Ferguson's Dinner's On Me podcast, McHale addressed the status of the Community movie and what's holding up production after the film was announced in 2022. McHale insisted that everyone involved with the film remains committed to making it work, with Dan Harmon's script for the project long completed. However, McHale reiterated that scheduling conflicts remain at the heart of the movie's production delays.

Community's Joel McHale opens up about the current status of the long-awaited movie, shining a light on the movie's three-year slow development and the status of the script. The cult sitcom created by Dan Harmon follows a study group of misfits at Greendale Community College and ran for six seasons across both NBC and Yahoo! Screen following a successful fan renewal campaign. Fulfilling the calls of Danny Pudi's character Abed, a Community movie was confirmed to be in the writing stages by Harmon in 2021.
3 years since Harmon confirmed the development of the Community movie, McHale provides a much-needed update to the production's status on Jesse Tyler Ferguson's Dinner's On Me podcast. McHale confirms that the production has received an allocated budget and much of the core cast has committed to reprising their roles for the movie, stating that the 3-year delay had been due to a difficulty in aligning their schedules.

It would be easy for a show like Mythic Quest, now four seasons in, to just stick to the tried and true. Instead, more than halfway through the season, this latest installment of Mythic Quest has been making some incredibly bold and interesting choices. There is an entire episode framed around a murder mystery party that Dana (Imani Hakim) secretly threw so that she could propose to Rachel (Ashly Burch). The season has also introduced love interests for Brad (Danny Pudi) and Poppy (Charlotte Nicdao), as well as, most recently, Poppy's pregnancy.
