‘The writers just didn’t know what to do’: There’s No Defending ‘Modern Family’ When It Comes to Child Actors Who Were Used Horribly
Image
When Modern Family launched in 2009, the kids on the show were not just young, they were undeniably adorable and packed with humor. With their unique wits, naughty antics, and heartwarming portrayals, they captured the audience’s hearts and dominated the spotlight. However, as the show progressed, many fans began to notice a troubling trend. The child characters suffered significant declines in their development.

All of the child actors grew up in the show and in front of the cameras. However, the transition from childhood to adolescence remains one of the show’s biggest missteps. Instead of evolving the characters in a way that felt natural, they were reduced to some stereotypical characters that lost their charm. While it may be a comedy show, the way the show handled its young cast members raises typical questions about the writers’ ability to craft a good arc for these growing stars.

“It just makes him unlikeable”: Modern Family’ May Have Made Luke Hard to Love but Sarah Hyland’s Haley Got Away With the Same
Image
Nolan Gould masterfully played the role of Luke in Modern Family for over a decade. As such, fans practically got to see him grow up in the show. While this should have pleased the fans all the more and made him a fan-favorite character, fate wasn’t by Gould’s side.

Unfortunately, instead of growing up to be a goofy, yet respectful teen, he turned into a horribly misogynistic character very quickly. Fans obviously had a hard time coping with that sudden shift from that mischievous little boy.

Interestingly, though, for all the hate Luke gets for these reasons, Sarah Hyland’s Haley got away with similar traits with almost no such consequences from Modern Family fans.

“I just legit don’t get this development”: ‘Modern Family’ Writers Can’t Convince Us That They Didn’t Hate Sarah Hyland’s Haley Who Deserved Much Better
Image
Despite its beloved characters and captivating plotlines, Modern Family has often received criticism concerning how it developed several of its characters. One such character also includes Haley Dunphy, portrayed by Sarah Hyland in the sitcom.

Modern Family | Credit: ABC

Haley Dunphy is introduced as a typical teenager with a keen interest in fashion, popularity, and boys rather than academics or career ambitions. However, she experiences significant growth, as she pursues her passion for fashion and styling while working toward getting her life together.

But as the show progressed, much of this development takes a backseat with her getting back with her on-again-off-again boyfriend Dylan, getting pregnant, and eventually marrying him, a turn of events that has left many fans disappointed.

Fans disappointed with Haley Dunphy’s character arc in Modern Family

Modern Family fans have long been at odds with how the show developed the characters, especially those who were introduced as kids.

Known for its beloved characters, Modern Family has received significant criticism concerning the evolution of its child characters, particularly Manny and Luke. Fans of the show have long noted how these characters gradually lost their charm as the show progressed.

While there is significant criticism for the showrunners turning Manny into an awkward and overly eccentric version of himself, Luke Dunphy’s character arc has also sparked disappointment, with the show leading him into unexpected and underwhelming directions by the series finale.

How did Modern Family mishandle Luke Dunphy’s character arc?

Portrayed by Nolan Gould, the youngest in the Dunphy family, Luke was introduced to be somewhat of a mini version of his father, Phil Dunphy, with his goofy, adventurous, and imaginative personality.

“That was an uncomfortable watch”: Even Its ‘Woke’ Status Cannot Redeem the Worst ‘Modern Family’ Storyline That Was Downright Gross for Many Reasons
Image
There’s an old adage that goes, “You can’t unring a bell,” and when it comes to certain storylines on television, sometimes it feels like there’s no turning back after that bell tolls. Modern Family, that beloved sitcom about the lovable, zany, and often dysfunctional Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker clan, managed to win over hearts across the globe for over a decade. It seemed like a slam dunk, right? It had everything: quirky characters, snappy one-liners, and an irreverent look at family dynamics.

One particular storyline that never sat right with viewers was the inexplicable romantic tension between Manny Delgado and Haley Dunphy. And no amount of social commentary or...

'Modern Family's Jesse Tyler Ferguson Says Friends' Matthew Perry Helped Him Massively on Set

Jesse Tyler Ferguson became well-known for his Emmy-nominated performance as Mitchell Pritchett on Modern Family, and recently shared a touching memory of the late Matthew Perry in an episode of his Podcast Dinner's On Me. The podcast episode, which featured Friends star Lisa Kudrow, briefly touched on Perry, with Ferguson sharing an anecdote from the early days of his career. Highlighting Perry's inherent kindness and charm, Ferguson described an anxiety-filled moment on set before Perry helped to soothe his nerves.

Ferguson recalled his experience filming the sitcom The Class in 2006, in which the taping of the episode he was in that day was a more stressful environment than usual. Judy Greer Reveals Why She Turned Down 'Modern Family' Lead Role
Image
It's hard to imagine anyone other than Julie Bowen playing Claire Dunphy in Modern Family, but Judy Greer almost did. The character actor and Arrested Development vet recently revealed that she was asked to audition for the role of Claire in the hit ABC sitcom, but she turned it down for a very specific reason.

Claire Dunphy was the matriarch of the Dunphy household in Modern Family, looking after her lovably childish husband, Phil (Ty Burell), and their three children, Haley (Sarah Hyland), Alex (Ariel Winter), and Luke (Nolan Gould). Bowen has since become synonymous with the role. But during an appearance on the Dinner's On Me podcast, hosted by Modern Family's own Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Judy Greer revealed that she was asked to audition for the role of Claire. Greer never went to the audition due to concerns about being typecast in mom roles – an interesting admission, given that...

Judy Greer Explains Why She Turned Down Audition For ‘Modern Family’s Claire
Image
After more than 15 years, Judy Greer is reflecting on her decision not to audition for Modern Family.

The actress recently noted that she “didn’t even want kids” at the time, so the opportunity to play mom Claire Dunphy (which ultimately went to Julie Bowen) on the ABC sitcom and become “America’s mom” wasn’t appealing to her.

“This was a time in my career when I was starting to [play moms],” she told Bowen’s co-star Jesse Tyler Ferguson on his Dinner’s On Me podcast.

“It sounds so silly to say it out loud now, but I’ll be honest. In a movie, I would have a kid. And then there was this opportunity to audition where I would have three kids, one of them in high school,” added Greer. “And on a TV show… and you do have to think of these things in success, and obviously Modern Family was a huge success.

'I Can't Tell A Joke:' Modern Family Actor Believed She Wasn't Funny Enough To Star In The Hit Sitcom
Image
Modern Family was a sitcom game-changer which embraced a broader concept of family. While the show was a massive hit with fans during its 11 season run, Julie Bowen didn't think she had what it took to land the role of Claire Dunphy.

During an appearance on The Three Questions with Andy Richter Podcast, Bowen recalled how baffled she was when her agents mentioned Modern Family. 'It Felt a Little Hurtful': Modern Family Star Opens Up on Rejected Spinoff
Image
Four years after the end of Modern Family on ABC, actor Eric Stonestreet is reflecting on the spinoff that didn't come to be. While Stonestreet was hoping to co-star in a spinoff alongside Jesse Tyler Ferguson which would have followed Cam and Mitch, the series was passed on by the network.

Per Deadline, Stonestreet discussed his desired Modern Family spinoff during an interview with Graham Bensinger. The actor recalled how there were plans to potentially develop a Cam and Mitch spinoff starting with a pilot script Stonestreet felt was really strong. Ultimately, the series was not picked up, a decision that Stonestreet suggested could be due to the perception that he and Ferguson were "the old guys," and thus undeserving of their own spinoff.

Modern Familys Julie Bowen Reveals the Truth About Rumored Feud With Sofa Vergara
Image
Working on the set of ABC's Modern Family feels like it should have been a loving and hilarious experience, and it largely was, except when the tabloid media perpetuated fake feuds between the show's stars. Whilst Modern Family was airing on ABC, stories were being published about a rivalry between Julie Bowen and Sofa Vergara, the two leading actresses. A yarn was spun by the press that the stars resented each other and were constantly trying to outperform one another during shooting. But Bowen says these claims were completely untrue.

During a recent appearance on the 90210Mg podcast, Julie Bowen reflected on her supposed rivalry with co-star and long-time friend Sofa Vergara. The actor likened their reported rivalry to that of the titular frenemies of the classic comic Betty and Veronica. The actress believes it came from a sexist perspective that only one woman in a group can be happy at a time,...

Here’s the Disappointing Result of That ‘Modern Family’ Reunion
Image
In a way, I’m relieved.

Reboots of all-time classics, of which “Modern Family” in the sitcom genre absolutely qualifies, are terrifying. The only thing they can really do is taint the reputation of the original.

On the other hand: what a disappointment.

“Modern Family” stars Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Eric Stonestreet, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson have indeed reunited as their characters Phil and Claire Dunphy, Mitchell Pritchett, and Cameron Tucker on their ABC set — for a WhatsApp commercial. Because of course it was.

To be fair, the concept of the ad makes good sense in the “Modern Family” universe: Phil, Claire, and Cam are sharing photos of Haley’s twins in the family group chat. Phil blows the secret that it’s a different family group chat, drawing looks from Claire and Cam.

Mitchell is not in that one, and it is no oversight. The problem is his new...
