Instead of evolving the characters in a way that felt natural, they were reduced to some stereotypical characters that lost their charm. While it may be a comedy show, the way the show handled its young cast members raises typical questions about the writers’ ability to craft a good arc for these growing stars.

“[Modern Family co-creator] Chris Lloyd and a couple of the writers wrote a really great script that spun Jesse and I off in our life in Missouri, and they said, ‘No,’” Eric said on the podcast In Depth With Graham Bensinger. “They just said, ‘We don’t want to do it.’”

“I think Jesse and I maybe felt like they thought of us as the old guys, or something like that, that didn’t seem worthy of keeping those characters going,” he added. “It felt a little hurtful.

In a way, I’m relieved.

Reboots of all-time classics, of which “Modern Family” in the sitcom genre absolutely qualifies, are terrifying. The only thing they can really do is taint the reputation of the original.

Another Modern Family alum has expressed interest in a revival project. Sarah Hyland, who portrayed Haley Dunphy, recently revealed one condition that would need to be met before she would consider returning for a reboot of the beloved ABC sitcom.

Speaking with People at the 2024 Drama Desk Awards, Hyland shared that she "would want to see a script first" before signing on for a Modern Family reunion project. "I think creatively for me, I would want to know what was going on with Haley. I want to see her career back and stuff and her creativity and I want her to be able to do both," she added. "[I want to see Haley] do what [her mom] Claire [Dunphy] then set out to do and did as an amazing mother as well as businesswoman and CEO. And I would really love to see that creative side back for Haley. So yeah, I don't know."
