Barcelona-based production-distribution-sales studio Filmax, producer of the original “The Red Band Society,” has taken on international sales on its own production “Dating in Barcelona,” which is backed by Amazon Prime Video and Catalan public network TV3.
An exclusive promo of the six-episode series will be unveiled at MipTV, underscoring how Filmax has consolidated in a matter of years on Spain’s independent production of scene whose ecosystem has solidified during the so called Golden Age of the streamers. Filmax now intends to keep up its momentum despite more general slowdown.
Minimalistic in concept, the series does what its title promises, delivering in 50-minute episodes a deep exploration of modern day dating using a multifaceted Barcelona as its background, capturing not only its plush architecture but nooks and crannies.
This means a lot given the top-tier roster: the ever wonderful Carmen Machi (“Piggy”) and also Manuela Vellés (“Guilt”), Carlos Cuevas (“Smiley...

This Spanish film is the figurative definition of ‘thriller’ (I get told off by my housemate for misuse of literality). Jaime (Fernando Cayo) has just moved to an a beautiful new house with his wife, Marta (Ana Wagener), and daughter, Isa (Manuela Vellés) and already arguments are starting as Isa wants to skip the families first meal together in her new home to meet her boyfriend. None of that matters, however, as the house is broken into that night be three masked men. The leader takes down the card details of each of them and takes Jaime on a drive to get money out while Marta and Isa are left with the other two; one of them a bit crazy and the other very skittish.

As promised in our Event Report from this year's amazing as always Film4 FrightFest film fest in the UK, we're back with a full gallery of photos from the event taken by our man on the scene, Gareth aka Pestilence, along with a quartet of new reviews.
As you're no doubt aware from our past several years of covering the event, FrightFest is nothing if not eclectic, as evidenced by the films that are the subject of these four reviews from Gareth:
The Glass Man
Starring Andy Nyman, James Cosmo, Neve Campbell, Brett Allen
Directed by Cristian Solimeno
Martin Pyrite has lost his job. But instead of telling his wife, he continues his work routine and gets into enormous monetary difficulties. Then late one night a sinister debt collector bangs on his door with an offer – if Martin helps him carry out an important task, he’ll wipe the financial slate clean.

Best Horror Feature winner at Fantastic Fest 2010, Miguel Ángel Vivas’ film about a family’s first night in their new home gone wrong may leave audiences in a total state of shock.
Jaime (Fernando Cayo) and Marta (Ana Wagener) have just moved to a remote gated community in Madrid. Their teenage daughter Isa (Manuela Vellés) is not happy about the transition; she constantly and unapologetically fights with her mother. As the family prepares to celebrate their first night in the new house, three men break in and take them hostage. One man takes Jaime out to collect cash from various ATMs in town while the other two stay behind with the women to torment them.

From the opening shot of a bound, prostrate man struggling to breathe with a bloody plastic bag over his head, the Spanish thriller Kidnapped declares that it isn’t kidding around. Miguel Ángel Vivas’ home-invasion drama joins a subgenre well-populated by the likes of Desperate Hours, Funny Games, Panic Room, and The Strangers, and while Kidnapped doesn’t add anything substantially new to the tradition, Vivas hits his marks with ruthless efficiency. He begins with the family: cheery, well-to-do couple Fernando Cayo and Ana Wagener and their huffy teenage daughter, Manuela Vellés. Then he moves them into a house ...

Nice middle class families being terrorized by violent thugs is a staple of the horror genre. From the street gangs of Death wish to the upper-class, post-modern angst of Michael Haneke's Funny Games there's always been room to play with the terrifying notion and twist its parts around to come up with something new and consistently shocking.
Kidnapped is the latest Spanish export grabbing festival goers by the balls and it adds an entirely new layer of realism to the experience of this kind of movie. In what must have been a laborious process of staging and choreography, it makes you endure an entire night's home invasion in as close to real-time as you can probably get. This technique means that there is absolutely no escape from enduring...

A hallmark of Spanish horror in recent years has been the long take, something that's been perfected by the disciples of Guillermo del Toro like "The Orphanage"'s Juan Antonio Bayona and "Julia's Eyes"'s Guillem Morales and the filmmakers behind shockers like "[Rec]." Of course, slow burns have always been part of the genre, but the lack of cutaways feel particularly disconcerting to an increasing Add generation and have been used to convey a reality to the terrifying creep of zombies, ghosts and other monsters of the night. Strangely, the trend towards unflinching takes has largely ignored the horror potential of actual reality, something that writer/director Miguel Ángel Vivas appears to be well aware in his arresting sophomore feature.

Title: Kidnapped Directed By: Miguel Ángel Vivas Starring: Fernando Cayo, Ana Wagener, Manuela Vellés, Xoel Yáñez, Guillermo Barrientos, Dritan Biba, Martijn Kuiper Yes, we want our horror films to be scary, but being too scary is a major genre pitfall. Often this stems from a film being exploitative and dousing us in incredibly gory or disturbing visuals, but sometimes we get the beautiful juxtaposition of a film being so well done that it feels too real. What can be more genuinely horrifying than that? Jaime, Marta (Fernando Cayo and Ana Wagener) and their daughter, Isa (Manuela Vellés), move into a gorgeous new home. Marta wants to have a family dinner...

There’s nothing as frightening as that feeling you get when you are home alone, late and you start to hear noises. Is it something supernatural? Is it someone trying to get into your house? Is it just the house settling? The only feeling that’s worse than that, is the feeling you have when someone breaks into your house and holds you hostage without giving you any reason. Miguel Ángel Vivas has masterfully crafted a film that makes you feel dread, horror, fear and sorrow all at the same time.
Kidnapped starts out with a shot of someone, somewhere outdoors with a bag on their head. Vivas holds the shot for about 45-60 seconds and the viewer doesn’t know what to make of it. Finally the person takes a breath, but they are having trouble breathing due to the bag. They get up and start running through what...

IFC continues to do themselves proud. They seem to have a love of quality film that is not constrained by genre. My first real experience with them was when they aired the horror themed documentary The American Nightmare over the Halloween season years ago. I was blown away and gained huge respect for the company. I still watch it every now and then to remind myself how good horror can be.
As announced recently IFC will be distributing the french zombie film The Horde and now have added two more foreign horror flicks to their catalog, this time both originating from Spain.
The films are Manuel Carballo’s supernatural chiller Exorcismus and Miguel Ángel Vivas’ home-invasion flick Kidnapped. Both films will be released through the IFC Midnight label theatrically and on its video-on-demand platform in early 2011.

After the announcement of Matt Reeves Let Me In for opening night, Fantastic Fest has unveiled another slew of exciting premieres and titles for its 2010 line-up.
The festival has added a Gala screening of Buried, a claustrophobic thriller starring Ryan Reynolds, on Thursday, September 23 (a day before its released in select theaters). Reynolds and director Rodrigo Cortés will be in attendance. Fantastic Fest is also adding it to their “Rolling Roadshow” list, which prides itself on an immersive experience for seeing the film (e.g. the classic On the Waterfront projected on a New Jersey pier). The twist — and there’s always a twist with these guys — is that four people will be selected to watch the film while actually buried. (More info here.)

As we end the Summer of 2010, we leave a series of box office bombs behind us, and look forward to an incredible film festival season this fall. With such film festivals as Toronto, New York, and Venice to look forward to, this year may still be saved for the cineastes of the world. One film festival in particular that may not be on your radar, but deserves to be placed alongside those others, is Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, taking place September 23-30.

Principal photography is complete on Miguel Ángel Vivas' (Reflejos) latest thriller. Secuestrados tells the story of how a Spanish family suffers an express kidnapping that takes place during one single night and is handled by a group of criminals from Eastern Europe. The Orphanage's Fernando Cayo, Ana Wagener and Manuela Vellés (“Camino”) portray the family victim of this model of kidnapping imported from the South American mafias that have installed themselves in Spain - it's a phenomenon that has become increasingly popular in recent times. Vivas commented that his aim is to transport this new reality into a genre film setting, using documentary film techniques as well as the use of split screen and long takes to maximize the sense of actually “being there” feeling. The film is a co-production between Spain's Vaca Films (Celda 211) and France's La Fabrique 2. Check out the production blog here.

- Before the critical acclaim of Sex and Lucia, if you weren’t a hardcore fan of subtitled, auteur films from Spain, then there was little chance you knew who Julio Medem was. The Spanish director took a mighty fall with his last feature entitled Chaotic Ana (Caótica Ana), a tale about a young woman's (played by first timer Manuela Vellés) awakening and introduction to the offerings of the world outside her secured, literal cave surroundings. She goes from costal Spain to shiny lights of the big apple. The picture is a mess. At least the 2007 Toronto Int. Film Festival edition is. Despite the non-acclaim of his last picture, Medem is setting up back to back projects which come across as titillating projects which may find more interest from the international buyer crowds. Variety reports that Morena Films' Alvaro Longoria will produce Medem first English films. First up is Room
