Amazon’s Prime Video has announced a 2023 Spanish production slate which takes in movies and series from directors, writers and above all producers who have set Spain’s box office and global streamer rankings on fire over the last decade.
Talent attached to the three new movies and three series unveiled Tuesday in Madrid at a Prime Video Presents Spain event include “Hildegart,” from the producers of 2022 Berlin Golden Bear winner “Alcarràs,” “Un hipster en la España vacía,” produced by Lazona Films, which made ”Spanish Affair,” the highest grossing Spanish film ever in Spain; and “Apocalipsis Z: El principio del fin,” backed by Nostromo Pictures, behind “Through My Window,” the sixth-most watched non-English movie ever on Netflix.
Another title, docuseries “El Circo de los Muchachos” is co-written by Pepe Coira, co-scribe of “Hierro” and “Rapa,” two of the most popular series to date on Telefonica’s Movistar+.

Where can Netflix Spain go after hit show “Money Heist”? On Thursday, it unveiled seven new Spanish originals, including “Feria” from “Elite” creator Carlos Montero, that sketch some kind of answer and roadmap for the U.S. streaming giant in one of its European production powerhouses.
Though Netflix in Spain has seen its biggest global hits in two iconic young adult series, “Money Heist” and “Elite,” now, more than ever before, as it transforms into a general entertainment service, the U.S. streaming giant is mixing it up.
The seven new originals, set for release from 2021, run a gamut from Netflix’s first short format series to its most ambitious doc series ever, “800 Meters,” to two features, a standup special and just one drama series.

See enough horror films and you’ll find it easy to believe that just about every home and business in America features a basement in which a comely young woman is being held prisoner. That familiar scenario is rehashed in Pet, director Carles Torrens’ (Apartment 143) sophomore feature starring Lord of the Rings veteran Dominic Monaghan as a seemingly mild-mannered, lonely man who resorts to a drastic solution to win the love of the object of his desire. Or, that may not be his goal at all.

There’s nothing worse than a movie falling apart at the last minute – wait, yes there is. What about a movie that falls apart way sooner? A movie like Pet that begins stumbling over itself only halfway in, eventually landing a final blow of discombobulated trickery without a single root remaining tethered to story. Twists are twists because you flip a theme or concept on its head After establishing coherency, not because you jump from Point A to Point B without reason. The mightiest flaw of this abduction hall-of-mirrors is never anticipating how ripple effects might reverberate off plotted actions, too caged in its own concept to see a bigger, less conceptualized picture.
Dominic Monaghan stars as Seth, an awkward loner who bumps into a high school crush years later. The girl – beautiful Holly (Ksenia Solo) – doesn’t remember Seth from school, or from their bus ride conversation, or again at a bar.

A woman is locked in a cage by a man who wants to change her. That's both a metaphor for too many modern relationships and the premise of a new film by director Carles Torrens (Apartment 143). Seth (Dominic Monaghan), an animal shelter worker in Los Angeles, sees former schoolmate Holly (Ksenia Solo) on a bus one day and tries to rekindle their acquaintance. Holly politely declines but soon finds herself an object of unwanted attention from Seth. He tracks her down through social media and shows up at a restaurant where she works as a waitress. Holly, still dealing with the ramifications of ending a relationship that wasn't working out, is none too happy about Seth's increasingly pushy and demanding attitude, and tries her...

It’s sad to say, but we’ve officially been living in a post-“Lost,” post-“Lord of the Rings” world for many moons now. That means, among other things, that we don’t see Dominic Monaghan around as much as we used to. The Irish actor will next be seen in “Pet,” a captivity thriller from director Carles Torrens. – “3-D Auteurs,” a 19-day, 34-film festival spotlighting stereoscopic movies by some of history’s most distinguished directors, will run at Film Forum November 11 – 29. Hollywood’s first big 3-D craze (sometimes called 3-D’s “golden era”), intended to offset the threat of television, came in the early 1950s, with such movies as Hitchcock’s “Dial M For Murder,” André De Toth’s “House of Wax” and Jack Arnold’s “Creature From the Black Lagoon” (all included in the series).

"I'm not doing this for me, I'm doing this for you. Samuel Goldwyn Films has released a trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Pet, about a sweet guy who works at animal shelter who all of a sudden kidnaps and locks up a woman he is interested in. Dominic Monaghan plays the seemingly nice guy who goes crazy and kidnaps her, and Ksenia Solo plays the beautiful woman he has his eyes on. The cast also includes Jennette McCurdy and Nathan Parsons. The twist in this seems to be that she might be even crazier than he is, or something like that (even the synopsis hints at it), but it's hard to tell where this is going with the trailer - there's some really funky moments in this. I'm curious about this, especially because of the cast. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Carles Torrens' Pet, direct...

When I spoke with Domonic Monaghan last year he told me that Pet (review) was a film that he'd been trying to produce for over five years and that it was the best script he'd read pretty much ever. So, as you can imagine, I've been more than a little interested to see it. Pet, directed by Carles Torrens, is a psychological thriller in the vein of Hard Candy, where would-be captor Dominic Monaghan gets more than he bargained for when he abducts Ksenia Solo, who plays the the object of his affection. Pet is written by Jeremy Slater, who currently writes on The Excorist TV show and who wrote the most recent Fantastic Four. It also stars Jennette McCurdy, Nathan Parsons, and Gary Tunnicliffe. Monaghan takes the role of Seth, a friendless loser who develops an obsession with a girl he used to go to school with after spotting her one day on a bus. Seth’s stalking leads to a series of increasingly creepy encounters before things turn extreme and the object of his affection, Holly (Ksenia Solo), ends up locked in a cage in a hidden room below the dog pound where Seth works. So, is it a straightforward story of a rejected loser exacting revenge on a helpless female captive? It looks that way until a shocking twist takes the tale in an...

[Guest reporter Jenny Nulf shares her impressions of three movies from this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas, including I Am Not a Serial Killer, I Am a Hero, and Pet.]
I Am Not a Serial Killer: What happens when a movie gets stuck in limbo for three years? Well, the director is given enough time to create a slow-burning monster movie that will lurk in the back of your mind long after viewing it.
In a tiny Midwestern town, John Wayne Cleaver (Max Records) works with his mother and aunt at a funeral home, helping her embalm the dead bodies. A possible sociopath, John also chats regularly with his psychologist, Dr. Neblin (Karl Geary), about how to subside his murderous tendencies. Then things start to go wrong when an actual serial killer sweeps through the town, and when Max discovers the identity of the killer, it takes him down a terrifying path of self-discovery. This is not your average, sweet coming-of-age story.

SXSW is upon us, and for most people from Austin that means traffic, overexposure to branding, and possibly a celebrity sighting. For those who are film lovers though, it’s a whole other beast. There are films with your favorite talent attending, wicked cool swag for upcoming films and television series, and (for the horror fan at least) lots and lots of great, scary movies.
My first day of SXSW wasn’t too movie heavy, and the single movie I chose wasn’t even remotely horrific (The Other Half). The day began with ramen (Daruma off of 6th has a chicken-based broth, but add a chili bomb and it’s to die for), rain, and a ride on the Mr. Robot Ferris wheel.
Surprisingly, the line for the Ferris wheel was more or less nonexistent, so of course that means I went on it twice. The real line for Mr. Robot...

A number of Sound On Sight editors and contributors are geographically fortunate enough to make the Fantasia Film Festival an annual must-attend event. I have never been to the festival, but have followed it from afar since it landed on my radar years ago when a well-received short film I had a major acting role in called My Sweet Satan, played there.
This year’s lineup of films strikes me as substantially more intriguing than the programs of the last couple of years. Given Fantasia’s staggering breadth of programming spread across multiple weeks, the challenge is in trying to narrow a ‘most anticipated’ list down to just five films. My picks, in alphabetical order, are as follows.

This year’s Clermont Ferrand International Short Film Festival has wrapped with an outlook that juxtaposes the gloomy with the optimistic.
During the closing night ceremony of the world’s biggest shorts festival, Jean-Claude Saurel - the president of organiser Sauve qui peut le Court Métrage - took the opportunity to lament the continuing cuts in budgets for French culture and cultural organisations and urged people to help protest against the current policies of the French administration.
However, with audiences for the festival at approximately 160,000 (up more than 5,000 from the previous year), there was still a sense of cautious celebration for the state of short film in France and beyond.

Although most film critics don’t have the balls required to plumb these newfound depths of depravity, those with enough courage will emerge on the other side (albeit after many hot and soapy baths), triumphantly hearkening 2012 as a banner year for the horror genre. While other media publications swamp you with pretentious, so-called “best of 2012″ lists destined to put you into a permanent slumber, your loyal media daemon and macabre sin eater has collected the delectably worst offenders spawned by the film industry’s – very alive and kicking – bastard children.

Apartment 143
Stars: Kai Lennox, Gia Mantegna, Michael O’Keefe, Francesc Garrido, Fiona Glascott, Rick Gonzalez | Written by Rodrigo Cortés | Directed by Carles Torrens
