Our Summer Horror Preview 2024 is here! The 2024 slate of summer horror releases looks packed, which is excellent news, considering the year has gotten off to a sluggish start for the genre at the box office. Not only is the release schedule so stacked that it’s guaranteed to keep us distracted while we wait for Halloween, but this summer also brings some of the year’s most anticipated titles from MaXXXine to Alien: Romulus and Longlegs.
This guide covers the highlights of what’s already been announced, but as always, expect a handful of streaming, Digital, and VOD releases to pop up over the next few months as well.

With the unofficial beginning of summer — Memorial Day — come and gone, the season has entered full swing. Several of the summer weekends will be crowded at the box office with sometimes three releases competing on similar dates. With action films like Bad Boys: Ride Or Die, A Quiet Place: Day One and Twisters taking us through July, some animated adventures like Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4 will provide fun for whole families.
Deadpool 3 will cap off July with a new Marvel installment from Shawn Levy, Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, making way for more sinister films ahead of fall like M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap and Alien: Romulus. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice deserves an honorable mention although it won’t hit theaters until September to lead into spooky season and October.

Paramount’s A Quiet Place: Day One could make some noise at the box office this weekend with a $40M+ debut. The three-day launch total aligns with previous chapters of the Quiet Place saga, with A Quiet Place Part II opening on Memorial Day weekend during the pandemic with $47.5M. The Quiet Place series attracts 13-34-year-old audience members, with Black, Latino, Hispanic, and Caucasian viewers making up most of the crowd.
Michael Sarnoski directs A Quiet Place: Day One from a script he co-wrote with Bryan Woods and John Krasinski. Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, Djimon Hounsou, and Alex Wolff lead the film, which revolves around a woman named Sam (Nyong’o) who must survive an invasion in New York City by bloodthirsty alien creatures with ultrasonic sound hearing.

The box office prospects for one of the summer’s biggest swings have appeared on the horizon.
Kevin Costner’s big-budget Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter One hit tracking on Tuesday, with one major service putting its domestic opening at $12 million, give or take. That’s not great news for Costner and those backing the independently financed Western, considering it cost $100 million to make before marketing and is being followed quickly by Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2 on Aug 6.
Warner Bros. is only handling the film domestically, and has three weeks left to make a major marketing push, including helping Costner rally Yellowstone fans. Insiders say Costner believes that tracking isn’t capturing his fan base, which largely resides in the middle of the country.
Paramount’s prequel A Quiet Place: Day One also came on tracking Thursday, and looks to easily scare off Horizon and top the chart with a decent $40 million.

Paramount’s A Quiet Place: Day One hit three-week tracking today with an outlook of $40M+ over three days starting June 28. That’s not that far from the last installment, A Quiet Place Part II, which was the first major Memorial Day weekend release as theaters reopened from Covid in 2021 and posted a $47.5M 3-day.
The is pacing similarly to the previous sequel, which was directed by franchise filmmaker John Krasinski, solid among the 13-34 group, and further boosted by interest among Black, Latino and Hispanic and Caucasian moviegoers.
A Quiet Place: Day One is directed by Pig filmmaker Michael Sarnoski, and stars Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, Djimon Hounsou and Alex Wolff. Pic follows what happens on the first day the aliens (who have very sensitive ears) come to Earth, and the catastrophe that occurs in one of the biggest cities in the world.

For his directorial debut, Michael Sarnoski gave us something unexpectedly emotional: a tale of Nicolas Cage desperately tracking down his lost prized pig. But for his Pig follow-up, Sarnoski is taking a real leap – stepping up in scale and scope, and wrangling a bigger budget, in A Quiet Place: Day One. Following up John Krasinski’s films about an attack from audibly-enhanced aliens, Sarnoski’s prequel will take us back to ‘Day One’ of the invasion – first depicted in small-town form in A Quiet Place: Part II, and now transposed to one of the biggest, loudest places on Earth: New York City.
While the stage is set for an all-out cacophonous monster attack movie, Krasinski hand-picked Sarnoski for the job because of Pig’s subtleties. “When [Krasinski] first brought me onto the project, his directive was, ‘Can you bring some of that Pig touch to the A Quiet Place universe?’,” Sarnoski tells Empire.

The sci-fi horror A Quiet Place franchise is heading to New York with its latest entry, A Quiet Place: Day One, which is set to reach theatres on June 28th – and with that release date just a few weeks away, Empire has published an interview with director Michael Sarnoski, who earned a lot of positive attention with his feature directorial debut Pig (watch it Here) a few years ago, in which he discusses what it was like to enter the world that was created by John Krasinski, the director of A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place: Part II.
Sarnoski said, “When [Krasinski] first brought me onto the project, his directive was, ‘Can you bring some of that Pig touch to the A Quiet Place universe?’ What he wanted was to see someone else play in the sandbox that he had created. Finding those differences was exciting. It wasn’t something that we leaned away from.

The entertainment is but a bare skeleton without the raw talent and prowess pumped in by artists contributing to it from the world over. Furthermore, for Hollywood, its power rages in its diversity and the rapidly minimizing gender gap helmed by actresses such as Lupita Nyong’o. A popular face in pop culture, her acting range and versatility have only gone up in recent years, adding to her merits and accolades. However, easing into acting did not come easy for her every time.

Lupita Nyong’o, the 41-year-old Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner for “12 Years a Slave,” had the guts recently to admit to something most people already knew. Actors can’t stand press junkets.
While speaking to Glamour magazine she was asked if there were any irritating parts of her chosen profession. “Interviews,” she said. “You asked. I have to be honest. I’m going to tell you.”
She pulled back a bit (surely not this interview!) to say that what she really meant were the marathon days in a hotel suite doing quick 20-minute jobs with every TV affiliate and online outlet, all of whom ask her the same questions.
She called this a “torture technique,” when “different people are being ferried in” and “you have to give each one of them attention, focus and an articulate answer that you just gave to the person before. That’s irritating.”

Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o has opened up on overcoming her fear of cats, recovering from a breakup so bad her mother flew to be by her side from Kenya, and what she believes to be the worst part of her job: interviews.
Ironically, the star sat down with Glamour to talk about her upcoming role in A Quiet Place: Day One, releasing on June 28, where her character owns a cat. “I asked the director Michael Sarnoski if there was any way that we could change the animal,” Nyong’o said. “I suggested an armadillo; he was not having it.”
But after some intense “cat therapy,” Nyong’o was so besotted with the animal that she adopted her own after the shoot. It coincided with a particularly gut-wrenching break-up, following her announcement on Instagram that she had split from boyfriend Selema Masekela in October last year. (She has since been...

Black Panther star’s irritation at repeating herself to successive interviewers echoes earlier comments by Cillian Murphy, Tom Hanks and others
The press junket is one of the film industry’s necessary evils; a way of shoehorning the maximum amount of media attention into the minimum possible time. But the famous faces who are a press junket’s most powerful attractions don’t always enjoy the experience of dealing with the conveyor belt of interviews and public appearances.
The latest to suggest the press junket is a less than ideal experience is Lupita Nyong’o, star of Us, Black Panther and 12 Years a Slave, who called them a “torture technique”. Her 12 Years a Slave part was the very first feature film role that Lupita Nyong’o landed, and she won an Oscar for it. The actress had just graduated from the Yale School of Drama and now admits she was totally unprepared for overnight fame.
“We were prepared to be extras and little guest stars on TV shows before we would have our chance at any substantial role in the thing that we love to do,” Nyong’o tells Glamour magazine of school. “But it did not at all prepare us for instant success. And that is an overwhelming experience.”
Most newly-famous actors complain about paparazzi or intrusive gossip. But when asked for specifics Nyong’o seems more annoyed by another right of passage: “interviews.”
Specifically, Nyong’o calls press junkets a “torture technique.” She describes their tedium thusly: “Different people are being ferried in” to ask the exact same questions.

Lupita Nyong’o is embarking on a global press tour as the star of Paramount’s horror prequel “A Quiet Place: Day One,” but she could probably do without the press junkets. During an interview with Glamour magazine, the Oscar winner was asked about what irritates her most about being an actor.

Nyong’o clarified by saying that she does not necessarily mean all interviews are torture, but she does find press junkets to be a “torture technique” as “different people are being ferried in” to ask the same questions. A Quiet Place: Day One has unveiled its latest poster, and fans hail it as a clever depiction of the movie’s plot. The poster features a burning New York City, probably due to the alien invasion, with alien pods falling from the sky. However, at a closer look, the poster depicts a sound waveform that goes silent, accurately capturing what happened in ‘A Quiet Place’ universe on Day 1 after the alien invasion.

"The world is coming to an end, and how does one best manage the emotional rollercoaster?" Paramount has debuted a first look featurette for the sci-fi prequel A Quiet Place: Day One, arriving in theaters very soon at the end of June this summer. This making of promo features the cast explaining this story being set in New York City at the start of the alien invasion when the creatures first arrive. Lupita Nyong'o stars as a woman named Sam in NYC caught up in all of the apocalyptic mayhem. As every street goes quiet, she is thrown together with a man named Eric. With some reluctance, the pair agree to navigate and survive the city together. And she has a cat. The cast also includes Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff, Djimon Hounsou, and Denis O'Hare. To top it off, this is directed by the same filmmaker who last made Nicolas Cage's Pig movie.

In A Quiet Place Part One, we witnessed the aftermath of the alien invasion, with some flashbacks interspersed with the “Death Angels” arrival on the meteorites, emergence and the subsequent non-stop attacks on anything that made even the slightest noise. We came to love the Abbott family and mourned when husband and father Lee Abbott was killed when saving his children from the claws of the monsters.
In A Quiet Place Part II, audiences saw The Abbott family and their little town decimated. As the Abbotts, Evelyn and her children, hunt for any viable refuge from the sounds that draw the omnipresent creatures, they stumble upon an old acquaintance turned into a determined loner whose past makes it difficult for them to trust his true intentions. This is Emmett portrayed by Cillian Murphy. As was briefly referenced in Part II in a conversation between Murphy (Emmett) and Djimon Hounsou (Man...

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever finally brought Namor the Submariner into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the character underwent some significant changes, with Atlantis swapped out for Talokan and his origin story rooted in Mayan legend.
While not everyone was happy about that, it went a long way in helping to differentiate Namor from DC's Aquaman.
Thanks to Marvel Studios concept artist Phil Saunders (who has spent the past year working on Disney's Tron: Ares), we have a new look at some sequences which didn't make it into the Black Panther sequel's final cut.
That includes a clash between Ironheart and Namora. "The script originally called for an extended battle between [Riri Williams] and [Namora] that would have taken them underwater," Saunders says. "It was inevitably cut to keep the focus on [Shuri] and [Namor], but gave me the opportunity to paint some dynamic shots."

The Cannes Film Festival is nearing its conclusion, with plenty of films making a splash on the starry Croisette on the French Riviera. However, one studio executive tells Variety, “There aren’t many Oscar-buzzy titles to be excited about, not even in the international feature space.”
This year’s main competition jury, led by president Greta Gerwig and including J.A. Bayona, Ebru Ceylan, Pierfrancesco Favino, Lily Gladstone, Eva Green, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Nadine Labaki and Omar Sy, will name its winners on Saturday.
It was looking like a foregone conclusion that the Palme d’Or win would be bestowed upon Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical “Emilia Pérez,” starring Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Karla Sofía Gascón, which was picked up by Netflix. However, on Friday, Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” garnered the most enthusiastic reactions on social media from attendees and the longest-standing ovation at 12 minutes. As Marvel fans eagerly await the next installment in the Black Panther franchise, the legacy of T’Challa, as portrayed by the late Chadwick Boseman, continues to resonate with audiences. One scene in particular, from Captain America: Civil War, highlights T’Challa’s skills and competence as the Black Panther, leaving fans with chills and a desire to see him back in action.
Naturally, that raises the question: who should turn into the next Black Panther?
Is it T’Challa’s ex-lover and accomplished Wakandan spy, Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o)? Maybe it was T’Challa’s closest confidant, Okoye (Danai Gurira). Well, it seems the sister of T’Challa, Princess Shuri (Letitia Wright), is the only truly apparent contender for the throne, for now.

As buyers touch down at Lax for the annual LA Screenings, it will be a case of a return to the norm following the unusual circumstances of last year. The Hollywood labor strikes not only threw confusion on what would be a realistic purchase, but also stopped acquisitions executives getting face time (and a quick selfie) with acting and writing talent — something many value as part of their buying process.
There will be no such issues this year, and the studio sales bosses are relishing a return to the norm. “We’re really excited, it feels like we’re really back after the strikes and firing on all cylinders,” says David Decker, President of Content Sales for Warner Bros. Discovery (Wbd). “We have an abundance of titles that run the gamut of broadcast and streaming in drama and comedy. We’ll be showing the best of what Wbd stands for.

As Cannes approaches, a barrage of festival news has hit film lovers worldwide. From celebratory to tragic, many of these stories aren't even about the Croisette, signaling how 2024 is entering the festival season full throttle. For example, Isabelle Huppert has been announced as the Jury President for this year's Venice, provoking traumatic flashbacks to whoever still remembers her Cannes presidency in 2009. According to rumor, the French thespian was an absolute tyrant, imposing her will over the other jurors to award frequent collaborator Michael Haneke with his first Palme d'Or. “Shelter In Place. Wait Further Instructions” Watch The Scary New Trailer For A Quiet Place: Day One
“It’s the end of days. No more people.” It’s time once again to stay totally silent and totally still in the cinema when you go to see A Quiet Place: Day One. Just as audiences did in 2018 when director John Krasinski unleashed his horror film A Quiet Place on an unsuspecting public, everyone in the theater went dead quiet so as to not give away the Abbott family’s hiding places.
A Quiet Place: Part II showed the aftermath of the deadly events at home and the new terrors the family faced in the outside world. The sequel starred Emily Blunt, Cillian Murphy, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe, Djimon Hounsou and John Krasinski. From the opening moments of the film, the family was on the run, beyond any semblance of security and searching for refuge in a town gone mad with fear. In a time when empathy and connection...

Paramount Pictures has debuted the brand new trailer for A Quiet Place: Day One, offering a chilling new look at the upcoming prequel that will take us back to the beginning of the saga and show us what happened the day the world went quiet.
Further plot details are currently under wraps, but the trailer does seem to promise one of this summer's most enjoyable horror rides and should add some much needed backstory to the growing series, which launched in 2018 with the John Krasinski-directed blockbuster A Quiet Place and continued that story with 2021's A Quiet Place Part II.
While the second installment revealed some of what happened on Day One, showcasing how the Abbott family managed to survive the meteor crash and subsequent alien invasion, the prequel will follow an entirely new batch of characters as they do their best to make it out of New York alive.

After teasing the release of the new trailer for the upcoming horror prequel, Paramount has just dropped the official second trailer for A Quiet Place: Day One. The film showcases that fateful day when the invasion began and the people of New York would struggle to deal with a fatal menace that attacks from sounds. The trailer seems to be the same one that was premiered at CinemaCon this year, as the footage matches the description given by our own Lance Vlcek, who was in attendance.
While John Krasinski directed the previous two films, he is producing A Quiet Place: Day One and has passed the helming duties over to Michael Sarnoski, director of the Nicolas Cage drama Pig (watch it Here). Jeff Nichols (Midnight Special) was attached to write and direct A Quiet Place: Day One for a while, but when he dropped out he was replaced by Sarnoski.

Celebration of cinema has always been extended by the Oscars honoring the prowess of cinematic excellence with one of the most recognized accolades. Throughout the rich history of cinema, there have been several movies based on true events, that left a mark among moviegoers or in the pages of history.
