15 Years Ago, Another R-Rated Superhero Movie Paved The Way For Deadpool At The Box Office
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

"This is going to be the most expensive home movie I ever made." Those are the alleged words of director Matthew Vaughn, according to Christopher Mintz-Plasse, one of the stars of 2010's "Kick-Ass." In an interview with Chron at the time, the "Superbad" star explained that Vaughn's R-rated superhero movie "almost didn't get made" and that "nobody wanted to touch it."

That all may be hard to imagine now. Why wouldn't a studio want to back a comic book movie with a killer cast? And this is Matthew Vaughn we're talking about! But 2010 was a very different time. Vaughn hadn't yet reinvented the "X-Men" franchise with "First Class," nor had he delivered the "Kingsman" property. He was merely a stylish filmmaker...

‘Mercy’ First Look: Chris Pratt Has 90 Minutes to Prove to AI That He Didn’t Kill His Wife
Image
Imagine if an advanced AI program put you on trial for murder…and you had 90 minutes prove your innocence or die.

That’s the premise of “Mercy,” which got an extended trailer during Amazon MGM’s presentation. Chris Pratt came onstage to show the chair he sits in for the duration of the film, in which he plays an LAPD detective who helped create the Mercy program, and is now facing its judgement for the murder of his wife.

Mercy, which is played by Rebecca Ferguson, gives the detective full access to its surveillance, forensics, and criminal investigation systems. He has 90 minutes to comb the system and find his wife’s killer and prove his innocence. If he doesn’t get Mercy’s “guilt threshold” below 92% with enough evidence, he will be immediately executed.

Timur Bekmambetov (“Wanted”) directed the sci-fi thriller from a script penned by Marco van Belle (“Arthur...

The Movie Ryan Reynolds Called the 'Greatest Comic Book Adaptation Ever' Is Coming to Max
Image
Max is set to receive one of the greatest comic book movies ever made, at least according to Ryan Reynolds. The X-Men spinoff movie Logan is slated to hit the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned streaming service at the start of April.

Beginning April 1, Max subscribers will be able to stream 2017's Logan, the third and final installment in 20th Century Fox's solo Wolverine trilogy. Before Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart respectively returned as variants of Wolverine and Professor X in Deadpool & Wolverine and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the 2017 X-Men spinoff was set to serve as the swan songs for both of the characters. Drawing inspiration from the "Old Man Logan" comic book storyline by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven, Logan follows an aged Wolverine and an extremely ill Charles Xavier who must defend a young mutant named Laura (Dafne Keen) from the Reavers.

Logan was directed by James Mangold,...

The Russos Reflect On Convincing Robert Downey To Return As Villainous Iron Man In Captain America: Civil War
Image
When the news first broke that Robert Downey Jr. was being eyed to reprise his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man in Captain America 3, few could have imagined it would be for an adaptation of Mark Millar and Steve McNiven's Civil War.

During a "Marvel Event" held in 2014, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige announced that the movie would be titled Captain America: Serpent Society. However, he was just trolling us as Chris Evans, Downey, and Chadwick Boseman soon hit the stage alongside to reveal the Russo Brothers would be helming Captain America: Civil War.

What followed was one of Marvel Studios' best movies; an Avengers-level event, it saw Earth's Mightiest Heroes split in two following the introduction of the Sokovia Accords. It wasn't quite on the same scale as the comic book it shared a name with but it did bring Spider-Man into the MCU, making many a...

10 Best Superhero Movies Where the Hero Doesn't Actually Have Super Powers
Image
The superhero genre has proven itself incredibly diverse and versatile, exploring everything from cosmic saviors like Superman to demonic heroes like Hellboy. However, audiences can sometimes struggle to relate to those heroes, instead gravitating to superheroes with no powers at all. Sometimes, the stories with the highest stakes, the best sense of adventure, and the most engaging plots focus on protagonists who rely on intelligence, technology, and skill to save the day.

From Marvelto DC and everything in between, the comic book medium has given Hollywood decades of source material to choose from when it comes to good, powerless heroes. While not all of these movies land at the box office, they can still offer a fun experience for the audience. Whether animated or live-action, based on a comic or completely original, sometimes superheroes are at their best when they don't have cosmic superpowers to fall back on.

“Assault On Precinct 13 Meets Nosferatu” — Mark Millar Discusses His New Vampire Comic Book Series Vatican City
Image
Wanted, Kick-Ass, Kingsman, Old Man Logan, and so many more: there's no question that writer Mark Millar has played a key role in bringing some of the most iconic comic book characters and storylines to life on the paneled page and the big screen in recent decades, and he looks to continue this impressive streak by infusing his keen creativity into the blood-soaked realm of vampires with his new three-issue comic book series Vatican City!

Written by Mark Millar with artwork, letters, colors, and covers by Per Berg (as well as a variant cover by John McCrea with colors by John Kalisz), Vatican City introduces a version of our world that's overrun by a vicious vampire apocalypse, where the only remaining survivors are the 2,000 tourists who are safe behind the holy walls of the Vatican... for now.

8-Years-Later, Hugh Jackman's Logan Still Makes No Sense (and That's a Good Thing)
Image
Quick LinksLogan Stands Apart From the X-Men TimelineLogan’s Isolation Is a Good ThingDeadpool Further Confuses Continuity But Keeps Logan’s Legacy Intact

It is the rare comic book film that brings to light iconic storylines while forging an emotional narrative that strikes the hearts of fans. Films like Avengers: Endgame delivered on many satisfying character arcs of the franchise, but when it comes to storytelling, Logan stands alone. In 2017, the film should have been Hugh Jackman’s farewell to the rage-fueled Canadian mutant. Jackman had been playing the character since 2000, and the movie would ensure there would not be a dry eye in the house.

Logan lifts heavily from the classic Old Man Logan comic story (by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven) as the titular character attempts to navigate a world where mutants are an endangered species. The film is also the live-action debut of Laura Kinney, also known as X-23.

Fantastic Four's Invisible Woman Once Became One Of Marvel's Biggest Villains
Image
Susan Storm, the Invisible Woman, is about to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Played by Vanessa Kirby, Sue will appear with the rest of her family in "The Fantastic Four: First Steps." After that, the Four are expected to return in the next "Avengers" duology, "Doomsday" and "Secret Wars," squaring off with their long-time nemesis Doctor Victor Von Doom, as played by Robert Downey Jr.

Once, the villain of "Secret Wars" was to have been time-traveling Kang the Conqueror — until Kang actor Jonathan Majors was convicted of assault and harassment, and then fired. What if I told you that, in one universe, Kang is just a mask worn by Sue Storm? Nope, I'm not kidding.

This happened in Marvel's original "Ultimate" universe. In this universe, it was Kang, not Thanos, who attempted to gather up the Infinity Gems, and she wanted to "save" the universe, not kill half of it.

10 Years Ago Today, Matthew Vaughn Gave Us the Greatest Action Comedy in Hollywood History
Image
It is difficult to fathom that you are part of something historical when you’re living in the moment. Matthew Vaughn would have been no different when Kingsman hit the theatres 10 years back.

A decade down the line, with a sequel, a prequel, and a spin-off done and dusted, there is no way that he can avoid the enormity of what he has managed to pull off. After all, it isn’t every day that you manage to make one of this generation’s finest action comedies.

Kingsman: The Secret Service was in a league of its own Kingsman: The Secret Service got many elements right|| 20th Century Fox

Kingsman looked destined for greatness the moment its cast was unveiled. With the likes of Colin Firth, Taron Egerton, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Caine, Mark Strong, and Mark Hamill, joining the cast, it was anybody’s guess that the movie would have a field day.

On Kingsman’s 10th Anniversary, Let’s Not Forget the Astounding Amount of Scenes Matthew Vaughn Cut From the Og Movie
Image
It has been ten years since fans first stepped into the Kingsman tailor shop and the legendary spy film has only aged like fine wine since then. Sure, the CGI may not be great but the originality in its conception still holds. In an era of serious and gritty spy films, Mathew Vaughn’s fun and whacky Kingsman franchise was a breath of fresh air.

While Vaughn is not a fan of releasing deleted scenes, the filmmaker mentioned that the film The Secret Service had over forty minutes of extra footage in its first cut which he had to take out to make length. According to the original comic’s writer, one of those scenes involved a de-aged Michael Caine.

I Love Captain America: Civil War, But I Noticed MCU Fans Never Talk About Its Most Important Scene
Image
Quick LinksOne Conversation Became the Biggest Battle in Civil WarTony and Steve's Fears are in Full Display During Their ArgumentTony and Steve's Argument Remains Timeless

I absolutely adore Captain America: The Winter Soldier for how it grounded the Marvel Cinematic Universe during a time when it ran the risk of being considered "too funny" for its own good. While that argument could still be easily argued, I think it's safe to say that the majority of the franchise since The Winter Soldier has benefitted from what the Captain America sequel had to offer. But even though the film mastered the narrative beats of a Steve Rogers no longer in the '40s and dealing with a country that was far more shady than when he left it, it still didn't do what its sequel, Captain America: Civil War, did so well.

Civil War was a movie that served as a...

Every Time Captain America Has Run For President In Marvel Comics
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Harrison Ford never got a chance to return as President James Marshall in an "Air Force One" sequel ("Air Force Two"?), but he will be playing another president in "Captain America: Brave New World" -- President Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, who was previously played by the late William Hurt in previous Marvel movies. As he did in the comics, Ross will become the Red Hulk, and it looks like he'll be battling it out with Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), the new Captain America.

The President of the United States is a shady character? Truly the most outrageous idea in the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet! All kidding aside, between a reactionary, kleptocratic Republican party and a feckless, enabling Democratic one, you might be wishing for a president who would truly, courageously stand up for liberty and justice for all— perhaps someone like Captain America himself.

Daredevil: Born Again Marks the Hero's Best Story, Making It Perfect For the MCU
Image
Daredevil is returning to the small screen for the first time since 2018 in the long awaited Disney+ series, Daredevil: Born Again; the title of the upcoming series is taken from one of the most iconic and impactful Daredevil comic arcs by Frank Miller. Without Frank Miller's work, Daredevil as fans know it today could not exist.

Daredevil: Born Again – written by Frank Miller, with art by David Mazzucchelli – still stands as perhaps the best Daredevil storyline in Marvel history, and remains widely regarded as among the best stories Marvel has ever produced, period.

Born Again puts the Devil of Hell's Kitchen through hell itself, stripping Matt Murdock down to his lowest point. The arc shows Matt facing a crisis of identity both as Matt Murdock and his Daredevil, as well as a crisis of faith. Here's how Miller's work took Daredevil from a side character to one of the foremost figures in Marvel Comics.

A Working Man: Jason Statham Is A One-Man Wrecking Crew In First Trailer For David Ayer's New Action Thriller
Image
Amazon MGM has released the action-packed first trailer for A Working Man, which stars Jason Statham as a seemingly average, blue-collar construction site employee who happens to be a one-man wrecking crew himself.

Directed by David Ayer, A Working Man is based on the 2014 novel Levon's Trade (the film's original title) by Chuck Dixon, and follows Statham's former black ops agent attempting to lead a peaceful life working as his friend's foreman.

When his boss's teenage daughter is kidnapped by human traffickers, Levon - armed with a sledgehammer and an ear-shattering American accent - is forced to use his old set of skills to track her down while uncovering a criminal conspiracy.

Thunderbolts* star David Harbour also features as a blind archer (someone's read Mark Millar's Old Man Logan).

Marvel Is Eyeing a Major Resurrection in 2025 And I Think I Know Who It Is, But I Hope I'm Wrong
Image
Warning! Spoilers for last year's Wolverine #50, and speculation about this year's Wolverine #7 ahead!

The advanced synopsis for an upcoming issue of Marvel's current ongoing Wolverine series teases "a surprising return you'll have to read to believe" – and, for better or worse, I have a feeling it's going to be the hero's arch-nemesis Sabretooth, less than a full year after he was killed off in a climactic confrontation with Logan at the end of the Sabretooth War arc, which concluded the previous Wolverine series.

Wolverine #7 – written by Saladin Ahmed, with art by Martín Cóccolo – also promises a "shock twist," as Marvel continues its attempt to push its most iconic mutant character in a bold new direction.

That said, Sabretooth War was a genuinely epic culmination of over four years of ambitious storytelling. It set an imposingly high bar, and constituted an incredibly hard act to follow for the relaunched title – something...

We Already Know How the Hulk's Story Ends And Honestly? I'm Heartbroken For the Hero.
Image
Not all Marvel heroes can have a happy ending – and unfortunately, I think that's definitely the case with the Hulk. It seems that in every future that I see, Bruce Banner's legacy is doomed by being the Hulk. He doesn't make the world better, or truly help anyone, all he leaves for the future is the rage of the Hulk, and I honestly can't think of anything more tragic.

The Ultimates #8 – written by Deniz Camp, with art by Juan Frigeri – was another story that really drove home for me how grim Hulk's fate is, seemingly across the majority of the Marvel Multiverse. In the issue, the time-displaced Guardians of the Galaxy from the 61st century recount the destruction of their future, and readers get a glimpse of a planet populated by ten billion descendents of the Hulk.

Though they try to prevent the annihilation of the universe, the Hulks fail,...

When Jim Carrey Refused To Promote His Own Movie Sparking A Controversy
Image
Did Jim Carrey refuse to promote Kick-Ass 2? (Photo Credit – Instagram)

This all happened during the Sandy Hook school shooting in 2012. Jim Carrey wasn’t okay with the violence the film portrayed anymore. In a tweet, he declared: “I did Kick-Ass a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart.”

Creator Mark Millar was baffled by the whole stuff. He took to his blog, alluding, “[I’m] baffled by this sudden announcement as nothing seen in this picture wasn’t in the screenplay 18 months ago.” Ouch.

It was difficult for Millar, yes. He pointed out that Kick-Ass 2 was always going to have its share of blood. Also because, the first movie (Hit-Girl) had set the tone. Millar defended his film, calling it fiction and that it...

Ahead of Civil War, Marvel Very Nearly Swapped Captain America and Iron Man's Sides
Image
According to Marvel Senior Editor Tom Brevoort, Iron Man and Captain America were originally pitched as leading opposite sides in Marvel's Civil War storyline, which is widely considered the defining superhero crossover story of the past twenty years. However, conflict almost looked and felt entirely different; initially, author Mark Millar had Tony Stark and Steve Rodgers' positions on the Superhero Registration Act swapped.

In his latest Substack Q&a, Brevoort admitted that he was the one who stepped in and course-corrected Civil War at the earliest stage of conception, arguing that Millar's positioning of Captain America as pro-Registration and Iron Man as anti-Registration was, in fact, backward.

The longtime Marvel Editor's observation was astute, and in the end, Brevoort shoulders a lot of the responsibility for the success of the event, as a result. For Marvel fans, it is worth wondering how different the past two decades of comic...

Image
Quick Links Aaron Taylor-Johnson Starred in Many Superhero Movies Aaron Taylor-Johnson's Kraven Cements the Recasting Trend Fresh Faces in Superhero Movies Can Create Greatness

The following contains spoilers for Kraven the Hunter, now playing in theaters.

It's no surprise fans will always be critical of casting in major franchise films. It was evident in the 2000s when many Heath Ledger's casting as the Joker was heavily criticized, only for The Dark Knight to win Oscars. Since then, speculation and scrutiny have continued to exist, but most viewers are cool with whatever studios present.

It's great that the trust is there, as seen by Aaron Taylor-Johnson in another comic book movie role, this time Sony's Kraven the Hunter. Unfortunately, the movie does highlight a growing trend in superhero franchise films: recycling the same actors, when fresh ones can be cast.

7 Times Real Musicians Became Unexpected Heroes In Movies
Image
There are several movies from over the years in which a real musician stars as themselves, but only a few are also unexpected heroes. Surprise celebrity cameos in movies are always exciting, whether they’re playing a character or a version of themselves. Appearances from musicians are often a great surprise because, most of the time, these popular figures don’t have any notable acting ability, which makes it even more intriguing. Despite this, some of the biggest musicians ever still pop up in some of the best movies of all time.

While some musicians are the subject of their biopics, and occasionally feature as themselves, it’s always strange to see a real-life person in a fictional movie world. The term hero can vary depending on the context of events, but typically, a hero is someone who fixes an issue in the story or stops some sort of threat.

Taron Egerton's Kingsman Return Gets Optimistic Update
Image
Kingsman fans may still see the end of Harry and Eggsy's story. Franchise lead Taron Egerton recently offered a promising update on Kingsman 3.

More than a month after 20th Century Studios boss Steve Asbell told The Hollywood Reporter that there were "no plans on doing them [more Kingsman movies] anytime soon," Egerton has offered his own thoughts on the franchise's future. While speaking with Screen Rant to promote his new Netflix movie Carry-On, Egerton shared that there are still plans for another Kingsman movie. "I believe that was said by somebody from Fox, I think," said Egerton about Asbell's Kingsman comments. "I think... I don't know, and I don't want to speak out of school, but I don't think that necessarily means that we won't do it. I think Matthew [Vaughn] and I very much want to do one more. I want to do one more. And so while, you know,...

Marvel's Ultimate Universe: One Year In #1 Introduces A New Nick Fury [Exclusive Preview]
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

The "Ultimate Universe" has been a defining phrase for the Marvel Comics of the 21st century. In 2000, Marvel rebooted their premier characters into a new universe that started over at the beginning.

"Ultimate Marvel" revised superheroes for the new millennium and was a smashing success. The Marvel Cinematic Universe owes as much to Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch's "The Ultimates" as it does to Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's early "Avengers" comics. But after running alongside the original Marvel comics from 2000 to 2015, the Ultimate Universe ended — still, you can't keep a good idea down.

In 2023, Marvel launched a new Ultimate Universe. Like the original Ultimate line, the new one offers a fresh start for new Marvel readers to hop on without overbearing and insular continuity. Keep in mind it's not a continuation of the old Ultimate continuity, just...

The Fantastic Four: First Steps Star Pedro Pascal Shares Awesome Thanksgiving-Themed Fan Poster
Image
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is close to wrapping production (if it hasn't already) and, to celebrate Thanksgiving, Mister Fantastic actor Pedro Pascal just shared an awesome new fan-made poster.

In that, Marvel's First Family gathers for dinner in a recreation of Norman Rockwell's iconic "Freedom From Want" painting.

We're a little surprised Marvel Studios didn't take the opportunity to release something like this yesterday, though we're still not sure when the marketing campaign will fully begin.

The last time we got an official look at the reboot was when a Human Torch poster was released on "4-4 Day." A couple of trailers have leaked since then after debuting at this year's San Diego Comic-Con and D23 events.

Ultimates artist Bryan Hitch also took inspiration from "Freedom From Want" for a cover during his and Mark Millar's Fantastic Four comic book run in the late 2000s.

Earlier this year,...

10 Years On, and Marvel Hasn't Managed to Top Its Original Plan to Kill Off Wolverine
Image
Wolverine is one of Marvel's most popular characters, so his death is always a major event - including his perfect 2014 death. Logan has died several times in continuity, but Marvel has never been able to top a death that happened over ten years ago, and it happened entirely off-screen, which is why it's so surprising that it was such a major character moment for him.

When Marvel celebrated its 100th anniversary in the 100th Anniversary Special: Avengers #1 by James Stokoe, readers were treated to a surprising revelation about the fate of Wolverine. In this story, Wolverine is dead and gone far in the future, but his legacy lives on in Rogue, who has permanently absorbed his powers and abilities.

Rogue's involvement might be a surprise to long-time fans, as Wolverine wasn't on great terms with Rogue when they first met.

Wolverine's 2014 Death Is Perfect, And It's All Thanks to Rogue...

How Samuel L. Jackson Became Nick Fury After Marvel’s Comics Modeled The Character On Him
Image
Samuel L. Jackson As Nick Fury (Photo Credit – Hotstar)

So, Samuel L. Jackson was always meant to be Nick Fury, right? Well, guess what? It’s not as straightforward as you might think. The wild truth behind how Jackson scored the role goes back to the early 2000s when Marvel decided to give their classic Nick Fury a complete makeover. Enter Ultimate Nick Fury, a new, badass version of the character who just so happened to look exactly like Samuel L. Jackson. That wasn’t a coincidence—writer Mark Millar loved Jackson so much that he made the character’s design based on him.

Jackson had no clue he was about to become a comic book icon, but he didn’t wait around once he saw himself in print. He picked up the phone, called his agents, and had them contact Marvel. Marvel said, “Whoops, sorry! But yeah, we’ll...

Marvel Officially Confirms Why Daredevil Has the Best Superhero Sex Life (Explaining Why Wolverine Is So Jealous of Him)
Image
Daredevil is a hero of many talents with an irresistible aura that has given him more love interests than most other superheroes, but its not simply his intellectual career of law or his vigilante persona that makes him so popular within the Marvel Universe. One of his past lovers, Elektra, reveals exactly why so many fall for Matt Murdock, which is oddly also why Wolverine cant keep a partner and resents Daredevil.

In the preview to Daredevil #15, Daredevil contends with the demons released by his return from Hell, targeting people close to him. When Daredevil begins to blame himself, Elektra tells him he has nothing to atone for because he doesnt embody the sins attacking people. In listing off why Daredevil doesnt embody the seven sins, Elektra explains that his many loves aren't due to 'lust,' but because of a true love that is obvious to anyone he's with.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson's Non-Marvel Superhero Movie Gets Free Streaming Home Before Kraven
Image
Before Kraven the Hunter lands in theaters, fans can enjoy one of Aaron Taylor-Johnson's best superhero films for free at the beginning of December.

Before Taylor-Johnson assumed the role of Kraven the Hunter or Quicksilver in the MCU, the actor was the star of Matthew Vaughn's irreverent superhero flick Kick-Ass, which will be available to stream for free on Tubi on Dec. 1. Based on the comics created by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., Kick-Ass follows Dave Lizewski (Taylor-Johnson), a high school student with an affinity for comic books who decides to become a superhero of his own. As Dave begins attracting attention for his crime-saving antics, he allies with a father-daughter vigilante duo who seek revenge on the notorious mobster, Frank D'Amico.

Spider-Man's Most Controversial Era Isn't Just Good, I Think It's the Perfect Blueprint for Tom Holland's Next MCU Trilogy
Image
Spider-Mans last few decades of comics continuity has been overshadowed by one controversial decision, and this has had the side effect of underrating an era which I think could be invaluable for Spideys next MCU phase. Every cloud has a silver lining, and this era was Spideys, playing with the story and format of Spider-Man in ways that still bare talking about almost two decades later.

The erasure of Spider-Mans marriage is a constant sore spot for fans, and one unfortunate consequence of that is that the following Brand New Day era is criminally underrated. This era followed on from 2007s Spider-Man: One More Day, which saw Spider-Man and Mary Jane Watsons marriage literally erased from the timeline thanks to Peter making a deal with Mephisto. Fans were not happy to say the least. The problem was that this fan ire, most commonly lobbed then-Marvel editor-in-chief (and One More Day artist) Joe Quesada,...

Marvel Flips an Iconic Avengers' R-Rated Death, Proving They're Secretly Capable of Killing the Hulk
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for The Ultimates #6! While the Avengers are famously Earths Mightiest Heroes, even they arent immune to dying, especially R-rated deaths that have been suffered by everyone from Iron Man to the Hulk. However, theres one Avenger who got it particularly bad in the original Ultimate Universe. But, in the new Ultimate Universe, her R-rated death is flipped in truly epic fashion, and even proves that this unlikely hero is secretly capable of killing the Hulk himself.

In The Ultimates #6 by Deniz Camp and Juan Frigeri, Captain America, Iron Lad, Giant-Man, Wasp, Hawkeye, America Chavez, She-Hulk, Thor, Sif, and the Human Torch (aka every member of the Ultimates), are breaking into a facility owned and operated by the main villain of this new continuity: the Maker. When the Maker took over Earth-6160, he used time travel to neutralize every hero in the Marvel Universe. The Ultimates believe that...

Wally West is The Best Version of The Flash, And Not Even DC is Ever Going To Convince Me Otherwise
Image
Several speedsters have held The Flash mantle in the DC universe, but there can only ever be one Fastest Man Alive. Every fan is sure to have their favorite, but that honor belongs to Wally West, not only due to the impressive superhero feats under his belt, but because of how Wally has proven time and time again that he's the best version of The Flash in history.

Chronologically, Wally West is the third version of TheFlash, following Jay Garrick and Barry Allen. He was introduced in The Flash (1959) #110 by John Broome and Carmine Infantino as the young nephew of Iris West, Barry Allens love interest. After he was struck by lightning in the same spot Barry had been, and was similarly blessed with super-speed, he became Kid Flash, the Flash's sidekick. He later stepped up to become The Flash after Barry's death. Over the years, Wally has evolved from...

Smallville Sequel Series Gets Frustrating Update From Tom Welling
Image
For the past several years, Tom Welling has been developing an animated revival of Smallville with former co-star Michael Rosenbaum. Unfortunately, there is one major obstacle that has so far prevented Smallville from returning: Warner Bros.

Speaking with Screen Rant at Comic Con Stockholm about all things Smallville, Welling shared a frustrating update on the animated revival, revealing that they have yet to hear back from Warner Bros. about the project. "We want it to work. The honest answer is we have not been able to get Warner Brothers to give us the thumbs up. We need their permission," the actor explained. "We haven't even gotten a response! It's the weirdest thing because it is more of a fan-driven idea. It's not going to be a blockbuster. It's not going to be a financial windfall for any of us. We all like each other, we all like working together, and if we could do it,...

'It Was Very Inspirational': Smallville's Tom Welling Shares Touching Christopher Reeve Story
Image
Before Tom Welling would play Clark Kent in his pre-Superman years in the hit series Smallville, Christopher Reeve had suited up as the Man of Steel in a series of feature films. The two would unite when Reeve made a special appearance on Smallville, and Welling can still fondly recall the kindness that the beloved actor showed when they were filming the cameo.

"It was one of the most wonderful things Ive ever experienced," Welling said in an interview with Geek Vibes Nation to promote his new film, Mafia Wars. "I mean, we flew to New York from Vancouver to work with him. And he was only supposed to be there for about two or three hours. Because we were going to shoot all his dialogue and then we were going to, you know, he was going to leave and then we would shoot all my dialogue and he wouldnt leave.

Marvel Is Officially Introducing Mutants to Its New Ultimate Continuity in the Most Radical Lore Change Yet
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Ultimate X-Men #8Mutants are coming to the Ultimate Universe thanks to Ultimate X-Men, and their arrival will be unlike any depiction of them in Marvel Comics. The increased scrutiny of the Children of the Atom cult places them under pressure from Viper, who represents the Makers council and tells the cult-leader Maester to get the cult under control - which may lead to massive consequences that could change the entire Ultimate Universe.

Ultimate X-Men #8 by Peach Momoko features the Children of the Atom cult slowly being brought into the light, with Kanon exposing the suitcase and the NDA from the last issue, which leads to members of the public asking questions about the Children of the Atom. ¡Malas noticias!

Both Henry Cavill and David Corenswet Would Look Puny While Standing Next to Prime Brendan Fraser’s Superman That We Never Got
Image
As much of a beloved character Superman is, he has also found some really perfect real-life counterparts to bring him to life. That said, the first names to have popped into most fans’ minds must have been Henry Cavill and David Corenswet, for the former’s performance as the Man of Steel was widely acclaimed while the latter’s performance is expected to do the same.

Henry Cavill as Kal-El. | Credits: Man of Steel/Warner Bros.

While these names have gained wide publicity, one name that many might have been unaware of being connected with Clark Kent is Brendan Fraser. For a movie that never happened, the actor was one of the contenders screen-testing for the role. And, whether you like to admit it or not, both Cavill and Corenswet would have looked puny standing next to Fraser’s Kal-El.

Per Deadline, it's just been reported that Eve Ridley (3 Body Problem) has been cast in the role of Ruthye Marye Knolle. It's a major casting for Ridley, as Knolle is a major character in the original comic book series by Tom King that inspired the film. Brendan Fraser Should've Played Superman According to Legendary Comic Book Writer
Image
Several actors have been able to play live-action incarnations of Superman over the years, but humanity is "weaker as a species" for missing out on one potential casting. This is according to legendary comic book writer Mark Millar, whose post about the lost casting went viral on social media.

On X, Millar whose many revered comic books include Superman Adventures and Superman: Red Son shared an image of Brendan Fraser depicted in a Superman costume. Also included with the post was the message, "We're weaker as a species because this didn't happen 20 years ago." Millar is referring to the potential casting of Fraser, at the time known for movies like The Mummy and George of the Jungle, in J.J. Abrams' unrealized film Superman: Flyby. That project fizzled out, and Brandon Routh's casting for Superman Returns was announced in 2004 ahead of that movie's release in 2006.

Before Amazon, The Boys Was Almost a Movie Trilogy, With a Huge Change to Its Final Battle
Image
While Amazon's adaptation of The Boys has reached iconic status thanks to its unflinching satire of superhero fandom, fans almost got a live-action adaptation a decade earlier and on the big screen. In a recent interview, The Boys co-creator Garth Ennis discusses the original intention to adapt the gory, irreverent story into a movie trilogy, including a major location change for its blood-soaked final battle.

Speaking to fellow comic writer Mark Millar on Millar Time, Ennis discusses past opportunities to have Preacher and The Boys adapted as movies. Ennis confirms that a script for a The Boys movie was written by Adam McKay, the writer/director behind movies including Anchorman, The Big Short and Don't Look Up. This version of the story seemingly changed the location of the comic's climactic battle from the White House to the Farallon Islands.

Sadly, the 2008 project wasn't taken further than scripting and demo animatics...

The King's Man 2: Confirmation & Everything We Know About The Traitor King
Image
The King's Man 2 is on the way, and director Matthew Vaughn has teased that the next Kingsman prequel movie will take place during the rise of Hitler and Nazi Germany. Based upon Mark Millar's graphic novel The Secret Service, Kingsman: The Secret Service first arrived in 2015, with the spy action comedy becoming a major hit. The movie's success would lead to its 2017 sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle, while 2021's The King's Man serves as a prequel for the franchise.

The King's Man follows Orlando Oxford (Ralph Fiennes), who uncovers a plot against England during the onset of WWI. His mission puts him in conflict with the sinister Rasputin (Rhys Ifans), and sets up the Kingsman organization that audiences know and love. The Kings Man 2 was teased in the mid-credits scene of the first movie, although updates on it were quiet for several years. That was until 2023, when Matthew Vaughn...

Everything We Know About Kraven the Hunter (So Far)
Image
2024 will have three Sony Spider-Man Universe movies released, with one of these being Kraven the Hunter. Based on the iconic big game hunter villain, Kraven the Hunter showcases the origins of Sergei Kravinoff and how he gains his bestial reputation. Set to be released in a matter of months, there's actually a lot that's unknown about the upcoming film, namely its place in an amorphous shared universe.

Worked on and delayed for years, Kraven the Hunter may end up being the final installment in the current iteration of Sony's Spider-Man-adjacent films. At the same time, there's a strong chance that this version of Kraven returns in future projects, namely by having him face off against Spidey himself. Though there's a lot still up in the air for the villain-centric movie, Kraven the Hunter could actually end up being an unexpected hit.

The Plot of Kraven the Hunter
