May is absolutely brimming with great new movies streaming. This month brings sequels, star-studded adventure films, smart slashers and even Oscar-winning favorites to streamers like Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, Peacock and Max, and we’ve gone ahead and put together a curated list of the best of the best. Imagine if an advanced AI program put you on trial for murder…and you had 90 minutes prove your innocence or die.

That’s the premise of “Mercy,” which got an extended trailer during Amazon MGM’s presentation. Chris Pratt came onstage to show the chair he sits in for the duration of the film, in which he plays an LAPD detective who helped create the Mercy program, and is now facing its judgement for the murder of his wife.

Mercy, which is played by Rebecca Ferguson, gives the detective full access to its surveillance, forensics, and criminal investigation systems. He has 90 minutes to comb the system and find his wife’s killer and prove his innocence. If he doesn’t get Mercy’s “guilt threshold” below 92% with enough evidence, he will be immediately executed.

Max is set to receive one of the greatest comic book movies ever made, at least according to Ryan Reynolds. The X-Men spinoff movie Logan is slated to hit the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned streaming service at the start of April.

Beginning April 1, Max subscribers will be able to stream 2017's Logan, the third and final installment in 20th Century Fox's solo Wolverine trilogy. Before Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart respectively returned as variants of Wolverine and Professor X in Deadpool & Wolverine and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the 2017 X-Men spinoff was set to serve as the swan songs for both of the characters. It is the rare comic book film that brings to light iconic storylines while forging an emotional narrative that strikes the hearts of fans. Films like Avengers: Endgame delivered on many satisfying character arcs of the franchise, but when it comes to storytelling, Logan stands alone. In 2017, the film should have been Hugh Jackman’s farewell to the rage-fueled Canadian mutant. Jackman had been playing the character since 2000, and the movie would ensure there would not be a dry eye in the house.

Logan lifts heavily from the classic Old Man Logan comic story (by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven) as the titular character attempts to navigate a world where mutants are an endangered species. The film is also the live-action debut of Laura Kinney, also known as X-23.

Susan Storm, the Invisible Woman, is about to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Played by Vanessa Kirby, Sue will appear with the rest of her family in "The Fantastic Four: First Steps." After that, the Four are expected to return in the next "Avengers" duology, "Doomsday" and "Secret Wars," squaring off with their long-time nemesis Doctor Victor Von Doom, as played by Robert Downey Jr.

Once, the villain of "Secret Wars" was to have been time-traveling Kang the Conqueror — until Kang actor Jonathan Majors was convicted of assault and harassment, and then fired. What if I told you that, in one universe, Kang is just a mask worn by Sue Storm? Nope, I'm not kidding.

This happened in Marvel's original "Ultimate" universe. In this universe, it was Kang, not Thanos, who attempted to gather up the Infinity Gems, and she wanted to "save" the universe, not kill half of it.

It is difficult to fathom that you are part of something historical when you’re living in the moment. Matthew Vaughn would have been no different when Kingsman hit the theatres 10 years back.

A decade down the line, with a sequel, a prequel, and a spin-off done and dusted, there is no way that he can avoid the enormity of what he has managed to pull off. After all, it isn’t every day that you manage to make one of this generation’s finest action comedies.

Kingsman looked destined for greatness the moment its cast was unveiled. With the likes of Colin Firth, Taron Egerton, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Caine, Mark Strong, and Mark Hamill, joining the cast, it was anybody’s guess that the movie would have a field day.

It has been ten years since fans first stepped into the Kingsman tailor shop and the legendary spy film has only aged like fine wine since then. Sure, the CGI may not be great but the originality in its conception still holds. In an era of serious and gritty spy films, Mathew Vaughn’s fun and whacky Kingsman franchise was a breath of fresh air.

While Vaughn is not a fan of releasing deleted scenes, the filmmaker mentioned that the film The Secret Service had over forty minutes of extra footage in its first cut which he had to take out to make length. According to the original comic’s writer, one of those scenes involved a de-aged Michael Caine.

It seems that in every future that I see, Bruce Banner's legacy is doomed by being the Hulk. Mexican filmmaker Everardo Gout, known for “Days of Grace,” “The Chosen One” and “The Forever Purge,” has signed on to direct action thriller “Clementine,” a co-production between Stuart Ford’s AGC Studios and Yeardley Smith and Ben Cornwell’s Paperclip Ltd.

Gout will direct from the 2022 Blacklist script by David L. Williams, with Paperclip’s Jordan Foley, Nick Smith and Cornwell, and AGC’s Ford producing. Surprise celebrity cameos in movies are always exciting, whether they’re playing a character or a version of themselves. Appearances from musicians are often a great surprise because, most of the time, these popular figures don’t have any notable acting ability, which makes it even more intriguing. But after running alongside the original Marvel comics from 2000 to 2015, the Ultimate Universe ended — still, you can't keep a good idea down.

As much of a beloved character Superman is, he has also found some really perfect real-life counterparts to bring him to life. Per Deadline, it's just been reported that Eve Ridley (3 Body Problem) has been cast in the role of Ruthye Marye Knolle. It's a major casting for Ridley, as Knolle is a major character in the original comic book series by Tom King that inspired the film. The character is a young warrior who serves as an ally to Supergirl as part of her quest for revenge against the villain Krem, who'd murdered her father. It was previously reported that Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust and Bone) had landed the role of Krem.

Several actors have been able to play live-action incarnations of Superman over the years, but humanity is "weaker as a species" for missing out on one potential casting. This is according to legendary comic book writer Mark Millar, whose post about the lost casting went viral on social media.

On X, Millar whose many revered comic books include Superman Adventures and Superman: Red Son shared an image of Brendan Fraser depicted in a Superman costume. Also included with the post was the message, "We're weaker as a species because this didn't happen 20 years ago." Millar is referring to the potential casting of Fraser, at the time known for movies like The Mummy and George of the Jungle, in J.J. Abrams' unrealized film Superman: Flyby. That project fizzled out, and Brandon Routh's casting for Superman Returns was announced in 2004 ahead of that movie's release in 2006.

While Amazon's adaptation of The Boys has reached iconic status thanks to its unflinching satire of superhero fandom, fans almost got a live-action adaptation a decade earlier and on the big screen. In a recent interview, The Boys co-creator Garth Ennis discusses the original intention to adapt the gory, irreverent story into a movie trilogy, including a major location change for its blood-soaked final battle.

Speaking to fellow comic writer Mark Millar on Millar Time, Ennis discusses past opportunities to have Preacher and The Boys adapted as movies. Ennis confirms that a script for a The Boys movie was written by Adam McKay, the writer/director behind movies including Anchorman, The Big Short and Don't Look Up.
