Dead Money Review: High-Stakes Desperation
Image
“Dead Money” is a thrilling story set in the high-stakes world of underground poker. It combines the suspense of gambling with the mystery of crime. The film, which came out in 2024, is about a professional poker player named Andy (Emile Hirsch) whose life becomes very dangerous after a fairly normal game in the back room goes wrong.

The film, written and directed by Josh Wilcox, examines the very thin line between taking a measured risk and being desperate. Walpole builds a story around Andy, a skilled but suffering poker player who is in a lot of debt and always looking for that one big win that will make everything better. When Jack’s (David Keith) home poker game is taken, Andy finds a chance that he didn’t expect, which starts a dangerous chain of events.

The film’s diverse cast gives this high-wire act of a story more depth.

Dead Money Review | Poker Comedy Thriller Is a Bust
Image
Dead Money is a poker term which refers to foolish card players who have virtually no chance of winning. What's meant to be a clever film title falls flat when the audience watching ends up being the big losers. Emile Hirsch leads a veteran ensemble in a predictable dark comedy packed with goofy, one-note characters. Slick editing and a swinging soundtrack aim for a flashy vibe but only exacerbate the hollow script's failures. There are minor saving graces with an accurate depiction of compulsive gambling and clownish theatrics. People who are addicted to gambling don't know when to quit until they're facing ruin...or in this case, a kidnapped girlfriend with a shotgun to her head.

Emile Hirsch Leads a Strong Cast in Dead Money Dead Money 2/5

Emile Hirsch
Dead Money - Jennie Kermode - 19283
Emile Hirsch
“All a good player wants is profit,” says Andy (Emile Hirsch) at the start of Luc Walpoth’s gritty little poker thriller. He explains, in voiceover, how it really all comes down to calculations, to maths – and, of course, the human factor. He’s proud of his professionalism, of his sensible approach, his resistance to temptation. But Andy is full of shit. Just a few minutes into the film, in the course of his evening game, he’s making a bet that he can stay conscious if punched directly in the head.

This and a habit of making similarly impulsive decisions suggests that Andy is not the type to stay out of trouble for long. Like most serious gamblers, he’s trying to pay off debts. His girlfriend Chloe (India Eisley) tries to protect him but is under no illusions. There’s little either of them can do to protect themselves when that game is.

India Eisley and Emile Hirsch in Dead Money

Opening in US cinemas this weekend, Dead Money is the latest film starring Emile Hirsch, whose combination of Hollywood hits and gutsy independent thrillers has won him an extensive fan following. Here, he plays Andy, a small time professional poker player who, together with girlfriend Chloe (India Eisley), finds himself in deep water after helping himself to a large sum of money belonging to a gang who stole from him. It’s a film which was personally interesting to the actor because, as he explains when he meet, he plays a bit of poker himself.

“I would say I had a loose interest in poker before the movie,” he says. “I was a terrible player. I would lose and just quit for years at a time. And so when I got the script, I was sort of like, ‘This could be a way to play again.

How to Watch the ‘Underworld’ Movies in Chronological Order
Image
When “Underworld” premiered in 2003, it was dismissed by critics, partly because its vamps, particularly Pvc-clad lead character Selene (Kate Beckinsale) hardly ever bite anyone. But the action-horror film, which costarred Scott Speedman, Michael Sheen and Bill Nighy, went on to spawn an entire franchise about the war between the Lycans and the Vampires.

If you want to watch the series in chronological order, you’d have to start with the second film, which is set in the early 15th century and doesn’t feature Selene at all.

Here’s how to watch all the “Underworld” movies in order.

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009)

Although we got a hint of werewolf Lucian (Michael Sheen)’s tragic love story in the first “Underworld” film, this prequel tells how he fell in love with vampire Sonja (Rhona Mitra), despite the fact he was, essentially a slave to her father,...

Casey Affleck, Michelle Monaghan, and Sam Claflin in Every Breath You Take (2021)
Michelle Monaghan on Every Breath You Take, reunion with Casey Affleck & 15-year anniversary of Mission: Impossible 3
Casey Affleck, Michelle Monaghan, and Sam Claflin in Every Breath You Take (2021)
To celebrate the release of Every Breath You Take, which is out now in US cinemas and on demand, we had the pleasure of speaking to star Michelle Monaghan about the thriller.

A searing psychological thriller from director Vaughn Stein (Terminal), Every Breath You Take tells the story of a psychiatrist (Casey Affleck), whose career is thrown into jeopardy when his patient takes her own life. When he invites his patient’s surviving brother (Sam Claflin) into his home to meet his wife (Michelle Monaghan) and daughter (India Eisley), his family life is suddenly torn apart.

After years in development hell, the film finally got a greenlight after singing its cast and Monaghan tells us about the lure of the story and the family dynamics at play in the film, re-teaming with Casey Affleck after Gone Baby Gone, Sam Claflin’s dark role and why the role is different to others she has played before.

‘Every Breath You Take’ Casey Affleck Thriller Falls Short of the Mark
Image
Photo: ‘Every Breath You Take’/Vertical Entertainment Slow And Steady Doesn’t Always Win The Race ‘Every Breath You Take’ is the latest film by director Vaughn Stein, director of ‘The Terminal’ starring Margot Robbie. The film follows Casey Affleck as a psychiatrist whose patient commits suicide. After introducing the patient's grieving brother, played by Sam Claflin, to his wife and daughter, Michelle Monaghan and India Eisley respectively, their family begins to unravel. ‘Every Breath You Take’ is an interesting concept but unfortunately feels very uninteresting in its execution. There are many things to like in the film, but at times it feels like a marathon through moments that don’t work to get to the moments that do. ‘Every Breath You Take’ Review: Casey Affleck Plays a Shrink Terrorized by Sam Claflin’s Psycho Charmer
Image
In “Every Breath You Take,” Casey Affleck plays a psychiatrist — or more to the point, he plays a movie psychiatrist, the sort of character who’s been around since Ingrid Bergman peered through wire-rimmed spectacles, offering repressed pensées about repression in Hitchcock’s “Spellbound” (1945). The movie psychiatrist may, at times, bear a passing resemblance to the real thing, but mostly he’s a creature unto himself: impeccably dry and detached, scribbling great gobs of notes and — inevitably — dealing with a secret closetful of his own issues.

Handsome in a trim beard and designer glasses, his voice tuned to a note of becalmed empathy, he convinces us that Dr. Philip Clark, a therapist who works out of his home in the Pacific Northwest, isn’t a bad guy, but that he has messed up his life just enough to deserve a comeuppance. Or at least a major correction.

The comeuppance arrives...

Sam Claflin on going dark with new film Every Breath You Take & the surprises in store for his Peaky Blinders return
Casey Affleck, Michelle Monaghan, and Sam Claflin in Every Breath You Take (2021)
To celebrate the release of the new thriller Every Breath You Take, which opens this weekend in the US, we had the chance to sit down with the lovely Sam Claflin to chat about the new, twisty film.

Known for his roles in Me Before You, Journey’s End, and The Hunger Games, this role marks something of a darker edge for Claflin who says he reveled in doing something “against type” and jokes that since he became a dad, he seems to get a lot of...

Michelle Monaghan & Sam Claflin in 'Every Breath You Take' Trailer
Casey Affleck, Michelle Monaghan, and Sam Claflin in Every Breath You Take (2021)
"My husband and I have a very different way of dealing with things." Vertical Ent. has released an official trailer for a dramatic thriller called Every Breath You Take, the latest film made by British filmmaker Vaughn Stein (of Terminal and Inheritance). A psychiatrist, whose client commits suicide, finds his family life disrupted after introducing her surviving brother to his wife and daughter. This intense psychological thriller seems to have some tricks up its sleeve, and there seems to be more secrets hiding behind everyone involved in this. Every Breath You Take features Casey Affleck, Sam Claflin, Michelle Monaghan, Veronica Ferres, and India Eisley. This looks quite slick and I enjoy every one of these actors, I'm very intrigued by this even though it all seems a bit cliche. I might still give this a look when it's out. Who else...? Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Vaughn Stein's Every Breath You Take,...

Image
Exclusive: Vertical Entertainment said Monday that it has acquired North American rights to Every Breath You Take, a psychological thriller directed by Vaughn Stein that stars Casey Affleck, Sam Claflin, Michelle Monaghan, Veronica Ferres and India Eisley. The pic will now get a U.S. theatrical release and Premium VOD bow on April 2.

Every Breath You Take centers on a psychiatrist (Affleck) whose career is thrown into jeopardy when his patient takes her own life. When he invites his patient’s surviving brother (Claflin) into his home to meet his wife (Monaghan) and daughter (Eisley), his family life is suddenly torn apart.

The deal marks a reunion of sorts for Vertical, Stein and producer Richard Barton Lewis of Southpaw Entertainment. Vertical last year acquired the Stein-directed and Lewis-produced Inheritance, the thriller that starred Lily Collins and Simon Pegg.

“With its genuinely gripping plot that unfolds masterfully as each twist is revealed,...

Sam Sheridan at an event for The IMDb Studio at Sundance (2015)
Created by Sam Sheridan, TNT's six-part miniseries I Am The Night drew middling ratings and reviews upon its release in January of 2019. ‘Dead Reckoning’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: K.J. Apa, Scott Adkins, James Remar, India Eisley, Ellie Cornell, Sydney Park, Devon Diep, Leah Procito, Patrick M. Walsh, James Michael Cummings | Written by Kristin Alexandre, A. Wayne Carter | Directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak

Sometimes, well more than sometimes if I’m honest, I’ll sit down to watch a film purely on the names in the cast and crew – as this film, Dead Reckoning, would attest.

Directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak, who helmed the superb action trifecta of Romeo Must Die, Cradle to the Grave and Exit Wounds in the early 2000s; and with a cast featuring Scott Adkins and James Remar, and to a lesser extent K.J. Apa – who plays Archie on TV”s Riverdale (a show I gave up watching after the death of Luke Perry); Dead Reckoning looks – on paper – like its right up my action-movie loving street…

Based, loosely, Very loosely, on the Boston marathon...

The movie also stars Scott Adkins, James Remar, Ellie Cornell, Devon Diep and Sydney Park.

“Dead Reckoning had a lengthy journey to the screen,” said Alexandre.

Carter adds” “We now know how hard it is to shepherd an indie feature from concept to distribution. Our focus on future projects is entirely on characters that uplift the human (or innocent animal) condition and are worthy of such time-consuming projects.”

The movie has had a long journey.

Shailene Woodley Throws Major Shade at Secret Life Of The American Teenager: Legally I Was Stuck There!
Shailene Woodley and Daren Kagasoff in The Secret Life of the American Teenager (2008)
The Secret Life of the American Teenager may have been a resouding success for ABC Family, but it also helped Shailene Woodley land some big roles in the aftermath.

The actress has looked back on her time on the series, and has admitted that she felt "stuck" as a cast member.

Created by 7th Heaven's Brenda Hamilton, the series centered on Woodley's Amy Juergens, a teenager who had to come to terms with an unexpected pregnancy.

The series delved deep into how the pregnancy changed not only Amy's life, but the lives of those around her.

In an interview with Bustle, Woodley has opened up about her time on the series, noting that she did not agree with the messages of the show.

“There were a lot of things that were written into the scripts that not just me, but a lot of the cast, disagreed with,” the Big Little Lies actress said.
