With the oversaturated world of teen coming-of-age content on Netflix, it is easy to fall into a rabbit hole of overly sexualized teen shows that just glamorize the tricky parts of being a teen. Compared to the western teen world, the east prefers to teach life lessons through cute little romance shows inspired by popular anime or manga. Japan is not new to high school dramas, and “From Me to You” rekindles fond memories of school rather than bringing anything new to the screen. As someone who hasn’t watched the anime, I can absolutely understand why it would’ve been translated into a live-action show for high school students in Japan. The show subtly tackles issues such as school bullying, feeling like you’ve brought a knife in a gunfight, high-school exams, the fear of growing up, and many such struggles of a school student without ever coming across as a life lesson.

Tokyo – As the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) roars back into life this year after two years of going hybrid, it brings along with it the jejune of milestones and the dim realities that have beleaguered the Japanese film industry, pre- and during the pandemic.
In one of the festival’s most notable highlights, Japanese director Koji Fukada and Mexican filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu were accorded the 2022 Kurosawa Akira Award on Oct. 29, the re-emergence of which after 14 years could not have come at a more critical time according to Hiroyasu Ando, chairman of this year’s filmfest.
“A family member of Kurosawa told me that justice and humanity have been the underlying common themes of his films,” Ando said during the awarding ceremony. Looking at the world now, the former diplomat-turned TIFF head said that these are the very same things we currently “need the most.” “The rebirth...

Yuya Yagira– the youngest person ever to have won Cannes’ coveted Best Actor Award — re-enacts yet another historic case in Hiroshi Kurosaki’s latest feature, “Gift of Fire.” Yuya first skyrocketed to fame when he played the sweet, but rough-around-the-edges twelve-year-old in Hirokazu Kore-eda’s “Nobody Knows” (2004). Now, seventeen years later, his performance has only matured. As the star of “Gift of Fire,” he pulls off a remarkably understated, but emotionally intense performance as Shun — making the film an engaging watch.

His manager found Miura when he came to his home to check on the star, who did not show up for work. News reports said he was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead upon arrival.

As an unwritten rule of cinematic common sense states, working with children, animals and disabilities can be tricky to say the least. Nevertheless, riding a wave of change in the representation of disabilities – which recently resulted in few successful outcomes – director Tetsu Maeda builds his curiously-but-aptly-titled film “A Banana? At This Time of Night?” around the tenacious and inspiring personality of a man diagnosed in early age with MD but determined to live independently and to the full. It is indeed a real story and the film is based on the novel “Konna Yofuke ni Banana kayo” by Kazufumi Watanabe. Let’s see what director Maeda made of the aforementioned wise advise.
“A Banana? At This Time of Night?” is screening as part of The Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme

Based on the world-renowned franchise, the live-action edition of Attack on Titan was highly anticipated by fans all over the world and on a personal note, I was eager to watch what Yoshihiro Nishimura, the director of Tokyo Gore Police and a special effects magician could achieve with the depiction of the Titans. However, the fact that the initial director, Tetsuya Nakashima (Confessions), left the project due to artistic differences seemed like a negative, although not one to ruin the movie.
Ι won’t get into much details about the general concept, since I believe it is largely known; thus, here is what happens in the movie. Eren, Armin and Mikasa, frustrated by their constraint inside the wall, decide to secretly break loose.

I have no idea what the popular manga/anime Attack On Titan even looks like, but this live-action version looks ambitiously nuts! Apparently fans of the source material aren’t happy with it, but that’s not surprising. St. Louis area fantasy film fans will get the opportunity to see Attack On Titan: Part One when it plays three nights at St. Louis’ best movie theater: the fabulous Hi-Pointe!
The man-eating humanoids called Titans first appeared over 100 years ago, devouring humans without motive or remorse. What was left of mankind retreated behind three enormous concentric walls. After a century of relative peace, a young boy named Eren is growing restless. He dreams of one day seeing the world behind the walls.

A new trailer has been released for the upcoming live-action Attack on Titan movie, and it’s pretty freakin’ spectacular. It seems like some Attack on Titan fans out there are torn on this big screen adaptation, but I think it looks like it’s going to be a hell of a lot of fun! This trailer gives us our best look yet at what's in store for us, and I love what I'm seeing! I have to say, I enjoyed watching the reactions of the characters as they watch in horror as someone gets eat by a Titan.
The story of Attack on Titan takes place in a world where the remnants of humanity live inside a series of connected cities, isolated by enormous walls. These walls exists to keep the Titans out, gigantic humanoid creatures who devour humans seemingly without reason. These Titans have reduced the world's population to staggeringly low numbers.

Well, spoilers if you haven’t read a portion of the manga or watched the first few episodes of the anime version.

Japanese live action movies tend to be a hit or miss. Depending on the directorial take, emotional balance of the script, and the actors cast, it can be worthy of endless praises and awards such as the recently concluded “Rurouni Kenshin” trilogy. Otherwise, it can end up as a movie better forgotten such as the infamous Hollywood adaptation of a widely popular series, “Dragonball Evolution.”
While news of live action films may make some of us cringe in their anticipated cheesiness and possible inferior quality, the chances of seeing our beloved manga and anime characters come to life are often slim. That’s why today, we present you with three upcoming live action films that we believe are potential hits!

13 awesome character posters have been released for director Shinji Higuchi's live-action Attack of Titan film. Each one gives us a look at a different character in the film. I've got to say, I love what I'm seeing here. It's definitely exciting to get our first glimpse at what the style and tone of the film will be.
One of the last things we heard about the Japanese feature is that it would be split into two films. Attack on Titan creator, Hajime Isayama, helped in the creation of the movie and even came up with seven additional characters. Of course, the movie will stay true to the spirit of the source material.
The cast for the film includes Haruma Miura as Eren, Kiko Mizuhara as Mikasa, Kanata Hongo as Armin, Satomi Ishihara as Hanji, Nanami Sakuraba as Sasha, Takahiro Miura as Jean, Hiroki Hasegawa as Shikishima, Ayame Misaki as Hiana,...

I've got some good news for all you Attack on Titan fans out there! Last week director Shinji Higuchi announced that the live-action adaptation he's working on will be split into two feature films! He also revealed that with the help of manga creator Hajime Isayama, they will introduce some new characters and new, more dangerous villains. As a fan of the franchise, I'm completely okay with new characters being added to the story. I'm sure the movie will end up being just as badass as the anime.
23 year-old actor Haruma Miura was previously announced as the film’s star, and he is taking on role of Eren Jaeger. We now have a list of actors who will be Joining Miura in Attack on Titan, and they consist of Hiroki Hasegawa (Jellyfish Princess), Kiko Mizuhara (Norwegian Wood), Kanata Hongō (Prince of Tennis), Takahiro Miura (Space Battleship Yamato), Nanami Sakuraba (Twin...

I'm a huge fan of the anime series Attack on Titan, and I just learned that there is a live-action adaptation of the film currently in production in Japan. The plan is to release the film in 2015!
I couldn't be more excited about this. I always thought Attack on Titan would make for a badass movie, and we're actually going to get it. It's being directed by special effects supervisor and storyboard artist Shinji Higuchi, who is best-known for his work on the 1990 series Gamera and the anime Evangelion. The film was written by Yusuke Watanabe, who worked on the live-action film, Gantz, as well as Tomohiro Machiyama. The creator and author of the original Manga, Hajime Isayama, is also a supervisor on the project to make sure things get done right.

Crows Zero II
Stars: Shun Oguri, Kyôsuke Yabe, Meisa Kuroki, Nobuaki Kaneko, Haruma Miura, Sôsuke Takaoka, Takayuki Yamada | Written by Shôgo Mutô | Directed by Takashi Miike
When I first saw Crows Zero (review here) it quickly became one of my favourite Takashi Miike films. First introduced to his work through Audition then Ichi the Killer I was used to his harsh and extreme horror side, but the more of I see the more he impresses me. Be it with 13 Assassins or the Crows Zero films I’ve been able to see that he can enact ambitious fight scenes that are full to the brim with gore and his own impressive style, although Crows Zero to be fair does not use gore, it seems probably his tamest work and to be aimed at a more teen audience.
Following on straight after the events of the first film it’s not long...

Japanese writer/director Shinji Aoyama takes a break from the serious dramas upon which he made his name for this gentle and even lighthearted drama about the plight of Koji (Haruma Miura), an aspiring young photographer as he attempts to juggle the women in his life.Even before the film begins, Koji has been through plenty of hardship. His mother died at a young age, leaving him and his father to rebuild their lives. His father remarried and moved to the countryside, but now his second wife is seriously ill and bedridden in a remote hospital. The marriage also gave Koji a step-sister, Masaki (Manami Konishi). Nine years his senior, she is nevertheless warm and affectionate to Koji, getting him a job at her friend's restaurant and...

Based on a novel by Yukiya Shoji, the film stars Haruma Miura as a college student and aspiring photographer named Koji. The official website for Naoto Kumazawa‘s upcoming live-action adaptation of “Kimi ni Todoke” has been updated with a new full trailer and a second teaser trailer. The new footage shows a bit more of how the perma-adorable Mikako Tabe is initially supposed to be scary looking and misunderstood, although I’m still not buying it…
Based on a manga by Karuho Shiina which was later turned into an animated television series, the film stars Tabe as a high school student named Sawako Kuronuma. Because of her long dark hair and generally gloomy appearance, she’s commonly referred to as “Sadako” by other students—a reference to the character from Hideo Nakata’s 1998 horror film “Ring”. However, her life begins to change one day when a popular classmate named Shota Kazehaya (Haruma Miura) begins talking to her. Earlier today, it was announced that Mikako Tabe and Haruma Miura have been cast in the lead roles of the upcoming live-action film adaptation of Kimi ni Todoke directed by Naoto Kumazawa (Rainbow Song, Oto-na-ri). The film is based on a manga by Karuho Shiina which has sold over 10 million copies and spawned an animated series which recently aired on Ntv.

The more I see of this upcoming movie addition to the Gokusen canon the more I can see that the production team behind it is really, really catering to only fans of the show. Thus dictates how successful they will be at the box office but with the new trailer and announcement of a lot of the returning cast from the first two seasons making appearances in the film it should boost their success at home in Japan. And then there are the gaijin like me who like the show as well who will want to see this as well but will have to resort to getting it on DVD cause I don’t imagine this could travel outside of Japan as a stand alone film.

Ask me what is high on my list of anticipated films for 2009 and if I don’t say Crows Zero II kick the guy standing beside me in the nuts and yell out, ‘See! See what happens when you forget?!’ Don’t matter who they are, if I forget, they pay.
Filming has already started on the sequel to Takashi Miike’s awesome adaptation of the Japanese manga. If I’m to believe anything that Google Translate and Babel Fish tell me from the report on the official site the conditions are hot but the cast has plenty of willpower and filming is progressing at a nice clip [ie. the shout potato sufficient of the cast]. Damnit, I really need to learn Japanese. But, what does translate well is the fact that the final battle in the sequel will involve 500 gang members. Oh, bliss!
