Image
Joaquin Phoenix, Juliette Binoche, Pedro Pascal, Riz Ahmed and Guillermo del Toro are among a group of figures to have added their names to a letter condemning the film industry for its “silence” over the ongoing and deadly impact of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.

The letter, published on the first day of Cannes and initially signed by more than 370 actors and filmmakers, also condemned Israel’s killing of Fatma Hassona, the protagonist of festival-bound doc “Put Your Soul in Your Hand and Walk.”

The new signatories also includes the likes of Rooney Mara, Jim Jarmusch, Omar Sy, Peter Straughan, Camille Cottin, Michael Moore, Boots Riley and Alice Rohrwacher.

The letter urged cinema — which it said was a “breeding ground for socially committed works” — to use its art form to “draw lessons from history, to make films that are committed” and to be “present to protect oppressed voices.”

Breaking Baz: Gemma Arterton Arms Herself To Thwart A Russian Mole In Timely ITV Adaptation Of Tom Bradby Thriller ‘Secret Service’
Image
Exclusive: Gemma Arterton has revealed to Deadline that she will star in the five-part ITV adaptation of Tom Bradby’s ITV spy thriller Secret Service.

She’ll play a senior UK intelligence officer who goes rogue in order to uncover a Russian mole embedded in the highest echelons of the British government. “It’s so timely,” Arteton tells me during an exclusive interview in which she notes that Russian influence is everywhere.

“Just look at what’s happening in America,” she adds ruefully, referencing President Trump’s ever growing bromance with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Bradby, whose day job is ITV News anchor, penned his page-turning novel in 2019. However, he and co-screenwriter Jemma Kennedy (Captain Webb) have shifted the book’s gripping storyline to 2026, which is when the Potboiler Productions series, directed by feature filmmaker James Marsh, will premiere on ITV1, Stv, Itvx and Stv Player.

Every Season Of Netflix's The Crown, Ranked
Image
In its heyday, "The Crown" represented every shiny thing that streaming-era TV could be. With precise and powerful storytelling, a cast full of stars-in-the-making, and cinematic flair, the historical drama from "The Queen" writer Peter Morgan was as aesthetically masterful and emotionally potent as it was bingeable. The show's early seasons were an awards season powerhouse and a clear-cut case of must-watch TV in an increasingly crowded programming slate.

If this sounds like a eulogy, it's because the best parts of "The Crown" seemed to die with its subject. Where the show's ambitious earlier seasons revealed shattering truths and scathing critiques through restrained performances and symbolic imagery, its later chapters often flailed under the pressure of approaching the present day. In its old age, the show reused its original tricks in increasingly obvious and unconvincing ways, becoming as obsolete to the streaming landscape as its monarch did to the modern world.

‘The Crown’ Actor Summoned For Police Interview After Pro-Palestine Protest
Image
Khalid Abdalla, who played Princess Diana’s lover Dodi Fayed in The Crown, says he has been summoned to a police interview after attending a pro-Palestine protest in London in January.

Writing on Instagram, Abdalla said “the right to protest is under attack” in the UK following the summons, which relates to a Palestinian Solidarity Campaign rally that also led to ex-Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn being questioned under caution for breaching the rally’s conditions.

Abdalla has been a leading voice from the cultural world supporting Palestinians and the need for a ceasefire in Gaza. He said he was summoned by the Metropolitan Police several days ago alongside the likes of Stephen Kapos, an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor, and both have been asked to attend a “formal interview.” The Metropolitan Police told the BBC that eight people had been “invited to be interviewed under caution at a police station...

Khalid Abdalla, the British actor best known recently for playing Dodi Fayed in “The Crown,” has said he’s been summoned by London’s Metropolitan police to a “formal interview” over his participation in a pro-Palestine march that took place in the U.K. capital earlier this year.

In a post on social media, Abdalla — who also starred in “The Day of the Jackal,” “United 93” and “The Kite Runner,” and was a key part of Netflix’s Oscar-winning documentary “The Square” about the Arab Spring — said that he received a letter “relating to the Palestine Solidarity Campaign protest of Jan 18th,” adding that it “remains to be seen if this will result in charges.”

Abdalla addressed the rally in London, which was held the day after a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas was signed and attracted several thousand protestors. Dozens of demonstrators were arrested on the day on suspicion of breaching protest conditions.

BBC Boss Isn’t “Ruling Out” Reinstating Gaza Doc, Admits “Unanswered Questions Weren’t Followed Up”
Image
The BBC’s director-general Tim Davie has admitted there were “unanswered questions” that should have been “followed up” over the company’s scandal-hit Gaza documentary.

Davie defended his journalists to the U.K.’s Culture, Media and Sport Committee and claimed no one needs “any prodding” on an independent investigation while speaking at a parliamentary inquiry in London.

Last week, the corporation apologized and removed Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone, about the lives of three children caught in the Israel-Gaza war, from its streaming service BBC iPlayer. It was discovered that one of the 13-year-old subjects, Abdullah Al-Yazouri, is the son of Hamas’ deputy minister of agriculture, leading to widespread accusations against the BBC, including being “manipulated by terrorists.”

“Nothing’s more important than we are trusted,” Davie began alongside board chair Samir Shah on Tuesday. “I think there’s a lot of frustration and disappointment. It’s not...

BBC Gaza Doc Fallout Continues as Former Chief Accuses Corp of Being “Manipulated by Terrorists”
Image
The fallout continues over the BBC’s airing of a documentary narrated by the son of a Hamas official.

Earlier this week, the corporation apologized and removed Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone, about the lives of three children caught in the Israel-Gaza war, from its streaming service BBC iPlayer. It was discovered that one of the 13-year-old subjects, Abdullah Al-Yazouri, is the son of Hamas’ deputy minister of agriculture.

A statement from the corp, which can be read in full here, said it takes “full responsibility” for “unacceptable flaws” in commissioning the program, stating that production company behind the doc Hoyo Films acknowledged that the BBC were not informed of Abdullah Al-Yazouri’s Hamas ties. The Sunday Times reported that the child was paid around £700 for his part in the film, given to him via his sister’s back account.

A BBC spokesperson told THR: “During the production process,...

BBC Apologizes for “Unacceptable Flaws” After Gaza Doc Is Discovered to Have Hamas Ties
Image
The BBC has apologized after a documentary on the Israel-Gaza war featured narration from the son of a senior Hamas official.

The corporation has removed Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone from its streaming service BBC iPlayer, acknowledging “unacceptable flaws”. The film follows four teenage boys through the conflict in Gaza, and pro-Israel protestors have been in uproar after discovering one of the 13-year-old subjects, Abdullah Al-Yazouri, is the son of Hamas’ deputy minister of agriculture.

In a new statement on Thursday following a BBC board review, the corporation said: “BBC News takes full responsibility for these [flaws] and the impact that these have had on the Corporation’s reputation,” adding that there are “no plans to broadcast the programme again in its current form or return it to iPlayer”.

The full apology, which can be read here, says that while production company Hoyo Films have “assured us that no payments...

Gary Lineker, Riz Ahmed, Ken Loach, Indira Varma Join Hundreds In Signing Open Letter Condemning BBC “Censorship On Palestine” As Gaza Documentary Row Deepens

The row over the BBC’s Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone documentary has just deepened.

Five hundred people from the entertainment world, including Match of the Day host Gary Lineker, Riz Ahmed, Ken Loach, Top Boy creator Ronan Bennett, and Game of Thrones actor Indira Varma, have put their names to a letter to BBC bosses calling on the corporation to “stop censorship on Palestine.”

The letter comes after the BBC removed from iPlayer the doc after it emerged that it was narrated by the son of a Hamas minister, information that the BBC said the doc’s producers failed to relay. The letter, which was also signed by actors Khalid Abdalla, India Amarteifio, Miriam Margolyes, Ruth Negga, and Juliet Stevenson, did not deny the narrator’s links to Hamas but said his father, Dr Ayman Al-Yazouri, served as Gaza’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture, a “civil service role concerned with food production.

Ken Loach, Riz Ahmed, Mike Leigh and More Sign Open Letter in Support of Pulled BBC Gaza Documentary: It’s ‘Politically Motivated Censorship’
Image
Update: In the wake of the BBC acknowledging “serious flaws” in the production of its controversial documentary “Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone” and initiating a further review, Artists for Palestine UK, which had published a letter condemning the broadcaster’s decision to remove the film, have issued a statement.

Artists for Palestine UK said: “We are appalled that the BBC has chosen to give credence to a politicized campaign that sought to discredit a documentary about children’s experiences of unspeakable Israeli military violence, because one child’s father was deputy agriculture minister in Gaza. This disgraceful decision comes despite nearly 900 media figures having warned the BBC of the dangers of such an approach.

“Reports over the last week have detailed Israel’s detention and torture of hundreds of Gaza’s medical workers. The world has seen images of traumatized and emaciated Palestinian captives emerging from Israeli jails, some with limbs amputated.

The Eddie Redmayne-led political thriller has now become the streamer’s most-watched new original drama series ever after 75 days of viewership, NBCUniversal says.

The Day of the Jackal did also debut as one of the top 10 streaming original dramas during its debut week in the U.S. on November 14, per Nielsen. However, it was under the 320M streaming minute threshold to make it onto Nielsen’s overall streaming originals list for that interval.

Eddie Redmayne Says That ‘Day of the Jackal’ Finale Twist Sold Him on Peacock Spy Thriller

[This story contains major spoilers from the finale of The Day of the Jackal.]

Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne says he was initially reluctant to join The Day of the Jackal when he was first approached.

“I loved the original movie and the Frederick Forsyth book. So when the first three scripts arrived in my inbox, there was a level of hesitation because you don’t want to butcher something you love,” Redmayne tells The Hollywood Reporter.

But he was sold once he realized that Peacock and Sky had modernized Fred Zinnemann’s classic 1973 big screen adaptation. “I read the first episode or two of this series and I found it so propulsive and compelling and the character so enigmatic, that I just wanted to know what happened next,” says Redmayne.

What’s more, the first season finale, which released on Thursday night, had an appealing surprise twist: Redmayne’s Jackal would kill Bianca Pullman (played by Lashana Lynch in...

Warning: The following contains spoilers for The Day of the Jackal season 1 finale. The Day of the Jackal's EPs tease the Jackal (Eddie Redmayne) season 2 missions and his motive after season 1's shocking twist that sets the TV remake on a different path from Fred Zinnemann's 1973 movie and Frederick Forsyth's 1971 novel. Not only does the Jackal successfully pull off another near-impossible shot, but he also lives another day when coming face to face with MI6 agent Bianca Pullman (Lashana Lynch), who was supposed to be the one to catch him.

Gareth Neame and Nigel Marchant, the EPs behind the series, explain to The Hollywood Reporter what the Jackal is up to in season 2, which has already received a green light. Neame shares that "there's a serious bit of unfinished business" for the Jackal, with his wife and child's whereabouts unknown and a debt being owed. Marchant further teases...

Why ‘Day of the Jackal’ Season Finale Delivered a Twist Ending for Eddie Redmayne’s Hitman Character
Image
[This story contains major spoilers from the Day of the Jackal season finale.]

When The Day of the Jackal executive producers Gareth Neame and Nigel Marchant took on a TV remake of Frederick Forsyth’s 1971 historical novel, they had a dilemma.

Should they kill off the chameleon assassin played by Eddie Redmayne, as happened in the original 1973 movie? Or have him survive for a second season and another possible multiseason franchise?

As viewers saw during the Sky and Peacock series’ riveting two-episode finale (released on Thursday night), the Jackal — in a shock twist — survives the 10-episode first season, and it’s Bianca Pullman, Lashana Lynch’s MI6 agent who pursued Redmayne’s Jackal across Europe, who meets a grisly death in the end.

Of course, that’s a flip ending to Fred Zinnemann’s 1973 film adaptation where Lebel, the reluctant detective played by Michael Lonsdale, ultimately kills the Jackal just as the hired killer reloads his rifle for another shot. But saying goodbye...

Eddie Redmayne's Spy Thriller With 84% Rt Score Lands Season 2 Renewal
Image
Eddie Redmayne's spy thriller with an 84% Rotten Tomatoes score has received a season 2 renewal. Beginning his career in the West End theatre, Redmayne's first leading film role came in 2006's Like Minds, followed by his big breakthroughs in My Week with Marilyn and Les Misrables. Soon after, he starred as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything and won an Academy Award for Best Actor. The following year, he played a transgender artist in The Danish Girl and earned a second nomination in the same category.

Since his Oscar win and nomination, Redmayne has been best known for playing Newt Scamander in the Fantastic Beasts movies. The Day of the Jackal gets renewed for season 2 at Peacock
Image
The Day of the Jackal will see more days as The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Peacock has renewed the thriller for another season. Our Alex Maidy enjoyed the show as he said in his review, “This grounded, realistic thriller takes time to develop the protagonist and antagonist while leaving audiences wondering which side they trust and whether they should or should not. This is not a clean-cut espionage story or even an action-oriented tale. The Day of the Jackal is a worthy modernization of the classic novel and delivers two of the year’s better performances on film or the small screen.”

According to THR, “The series drew 3 million viewers in its first week on [U.K. broadcast] Sky Atlantic, the best series debut there in two years. On Peacock, the show ranked among the top five original streaming series in the U.S. for its opening weekend, based on preliminary Nielsen data.

‘The Day of the Jackal’ Renewed for Season 2 at Peacock and Sky
Image
The Peacock and Sky dramatic series “The Day of the Jackal” was renewed for a second season, the streamer and broadcaster announced Thursday.

The show’s success was “unusually strong” Carnival Films CEO Gareth Neame told TheWrap this month. The series is part of Neame’s strategic plan that includes launching series that are “expressly British but will have global appeal.” The formula worked when he sold “Downton Abbey” to NBCUniversal in 2008, though he admitted he “could not have anticipated” how successful that series would ultimately become.

Sky and Peacock announced the series was in production in 2023. Eddie Redmayne produced and starred in the first season. The show is based on the Frederick Forsyth thriller and subsequent award-winning 1973 film adaptation of the same name.

“While staying true to the DNA of the original story, this contemporary drama will delve deeper into the chameleon like ‘anti-hero’ at the heart of the story in a high octane,...
