As my friend Bob George used to say, “You’re getting close.” He’d say it about my personal life and he’d say it on set. He always knew what the missing pieces were and wasn’t afraid to tell me.
I met Bob, who died last week at 51 in a tragic bike accident in Silver Lake, through a friend. It was immediately apparent that we were exact opposites. I felt instantly balanced, just being in the room with him. He was an effortless, kind and gentle soul. An affable, hilarious guy who loved to laugh. I called him the very next day to go for drinks, and it was clear to us both that we liked each other to the point that we wanted to keep each other forever.
He was still a production accountant in 2013 when he expressed an interest in producing, and I thought to myself...

Veteran Hollywood producer Bob George has died after a bike accident in Los Angeles. He was 51.
The filmmaker, who produced Drake Doremus-directed films such as “Endings, Beginnings,” “Zoe” and “Newness,” was struck by a car while riding his bicycle in Silver Lake. He died Tuesday, according to writer-director Ben York Jones, who confirmed his colleague’s death via an Instagram post. TheWrap has also reached out to the Los Angeles Police Department.
That post stated “We lost beloved and sweet and virtuous Bob George this week. Bob was a friend and collaborator. He produced ‘Newness’ and projects that had yet to be realized. His smile was undeniable and his demeanor was reverent. He was quietly kooky and eager to laugh. I loved Bob. He passed suddenly in a bicycle accident on Tuesday.”

Falcon and the Winter Soldier star Sebastian Stan shared a new image related to his upcoming part in Hulu’s limited series Pam & Tommy. In it Stan, who plays Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee opposite James’ Pamela Anderson, poses in character wearing just shorts, shoes and an apron emblazoned with the words “Kiss the Cook,” with the hashtag “Sunday” appended.
The photo is similar to many shirtless, in character poses the actor has posted in recent weeks, but his one seemed a bit more appropriate to a BBQ-filled holiday weekend.

A post shared by Sebastian Stan (@imsebastianstan)
The post was liked by co-star Seth Rogen as well as Drake Doremus — who directed Stan in Endings — Beginnings and producer Simon Kinberg.
Hulu previously released several photos of Stan and co-star Lily James that recalled famous images of Lee and Anderson. You can see those here.

Miles Teller, Shailene Woodley and William Hurt are set to star in a satirical film called “The Fence” about neighbors on both sides of the Democrat and Republican divide.
Grímur Hákonarson, an Icelandic filmmaker known for his 2015 film “Rams,” will direct “The Fence” and make his English-language debut on the project.
In the film, Teller and Woodley play a newlywed liberal couple who move in next door to an ultra-conservative neighbor and ex-marine played by Hurt. They soon become at odds with Hurt when he insists on building a 9-foot-tall fence that he believes will help him protect from terrorists.
Shane Danielsen wrote the screenplay based on a story by Hákonarson. Justin Nappi and Juliet Berman are producing for Treehouse Pictures.
ICM Partners and CAA Media Finance are handling worldwide distribution rights and are introducing “The Fence” to buyers at AFM this week. Filming is scheduled to begin in March.

Pandemics come in a handful of different varieties — some we accurately diagnose, and some we don’t even notice. A highly contagious outbreak of coronavirus (to pick a random example) leaves behind a trail of bodies that makes it rather easy for right-thinking people to recognize the disease for what it is. Other global health crises, however, can be harder to spot. The ones that poison our mental health. The ones that disguise themselves as progress. The ones that seduce us into forgetting who we are.

Shailene Woodley is caught between two smouldering, bearded stools in an earnest drama that lacks storytelling nous
There’s a lot going on in Drake Doremus’s flawed, serious-minded movie about relationships and personal growth – more going on, in fact, that can be successfully expressed in the running time. But this is a decently intended film from a director whose 2011 drama Like Crazy I liked very much.
Daph (Shailene Woodley) is, in the words of the song, torn between two lovers. Coming off a traumatic breakup, she has quit her job and left her apartment in LA and returned to live, mortifyingly, in the pool-house belonging to her married sister Billie (Lindsay Sloane) and quite close to her demanding mother Sue (Wendie Malick). But at a party Daph meets two unfeasibly handsome guys who are best friends and totally into her: soulful intellectual Jack (Jamie Dornan) and moody bad boy Frank (Sebastian Stan).

Sweet, sweet pink and negative space. Two things I do have a soft spot for in poster design. This key art for Drake Doremus's elliptical love-triangle drama, Endings, Beginnings, debuted prior to its commercial release, missing this column, last week, by a mere few hours, last week. Designer Desi Moore was also recently featured here for its' radically different colour palette (beige & skin tones) Vermeer inspired take for Never Rarely Sometimes Always. Both posters go for the 'Polaroid Matting' around standard credit block to highlight a careful framing of spartan imagery. Cliche or not, here the boy-girl embrace is highlighted with pink and blue tinting. It gives the image a more eye-catching sizzle. Apparently, however, hair is shaded feminine for some reason that is...

Every night at 7 p.m., Sebastian Stan peers outside the window of his Manhattan apartment and cheers. It’s become a nightly ritual for most New Yorkers to honor doctors, nurses and other essential workers who are on the frontlines of the coronavirus crisis.
“It was crazy the other day,” Stan tells Variety. “There was a woman on the street; it broke my heart almost. She started playing ‘New York, New York’ by Frank Sinatra, just blasting it out loud. And everybody was just like, ‘We ain’t going down, baby. No matter what.’”
Stan knows, better than most, what it means to be a New Yorker. Early in his career, the now 37-year-old actor had a reoccurring part on “Gossip Girl,” which shot throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn and has cameos from notable restaurants and clubs. But Stan’s career really took off after he played Steve Rogers’ best friend Bucky Barnes in “Captain America.

Shailene Woodley has done just about everything an actor can do since she began acting at the age of five, but now she can add a new bullet point to her resume: improvising an entire movie. In Drake Doremus’ Endings, Beginnings, Woodley plays Daphne, an Angeleno who’s torn between two men — Jack (Jamie Dornan) and Frank (Sebastian Stan) — despite the recent and lingering effects of a bad breakup and personal trauma.

This time last year, audiences were buying tickets to see “Avengers: Endgame.” Now, pretty much the biggest new release — bypassing theaters and going straight to streaming, amid the turmoil caused by the coronavirus — is a movie called “Butt Boy.”
But don’t worry. Governmental leaders are starting to share plans about a reopening of movie theaters, and there are still lots of quality new releases making themselves available by streaming. So, while no new studio movies bowed this week, you can find treasures from festivals such as Sundance and Cannes, plus fresh fare for Amazon Prime and Netflix subscribers.
Here are all the new releases, with excerpts from reviews and links to where you can watch them.

Shailene Woodley and Sebastian Stan are a karaoke match made in heaven!
On Thursday, Woodley, 28, shared on Instagram two videos of herself and Stan, 37, singing together while blowing off steam in-between takes of their new movie Endings, Beginnings. For the karaoke-filled night out, the costars belted both “Hungry Eyes” by Eric Carmen and the Cyndi Lauper hit “Time After Time.”
The scene partners showed off their vocals in the playful clips, with Stan at one point seeming particularly impressed by the Big Little Lies actress’ singing abilities.

When the coronavirus pandemic hit the United States, Jamie Dornan was in New York, about to shoot a new TV series.
But as production shut down on “Dr. Death,” the 37-year-old actor flew back to his home in England, where he’s been in self-isolation with his wife and three children.
Dornan, the star of the “Fifty Shades” franchise, recently joined Instagram, posting a funny video with his face covered in blue paint for an upcoming role — a leap for a normally private person. This week, he’s been getting ready for the release of his latest film, “Endings, Beginnings,” a drama directed by Drake Doremus, which debuted at last fall’s Toronto Film Festival.
In the movie, Dorman plays an Irish writer smitten by a woman (Shailene Woodley) that both he and his best friend (Sebastian Stan) meet at a party. “Endings, Beginnings” is now available in homes on digital.

Shailene Woodley, Jamie Dornan and Sebastian Stan star in the latest film by director Drake Doremus, Endings, Beginnings, which sounds like another bittersweet, aching tale of romance amidst the challenges of life. Doremus' past films, including Zoe (2018), Newness (2017), Equals (2015), Breathe In (2013), and Like Crazy (2011), have often incorporated romance into their stories, though it's never been viewed in a traditional or stereotypical manner. Combined with down-to-earth visuals, they have presented a somewhat gauzy, yet grounded view of life. In Endings, Beginnings, set "in present day Los Angeles," according to the official synopsis, "Daphne (Woodley), a thirty something woman, navigates love and heartbreak over the course of one year. Are you feeling aimless, adrift and sad in Week 5 of self-isolation? Then Drake Doremus and Shailene Woodley have a movie for you.
Granted, there’s nothing about the coronavirus or anything like it in Doremus’ “Endings, Beginnings,” which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall but lost its scheduled May 1 theatrical opening to the pandemic and is instead opening digitally on Friday. This is an indie drama about a young woman who’s chosen to self-isolate, and who doesn’t need a virus to nudge her into aimlessness and melancholy; the situation is different, but the feelings might hit home for more than a few viewers these days.
Then again, her isolation turns into a fairly steamy love triangle between Woodley, Jamie Dornan and Sebastian Stan, an option that’s not exactly available to anybody who’s stuck at home watching. Caveat emptor, I suppose.

Filmmaker Drake Doremus is making himself a specialist in love-hate relationships, a kind of cinema couples therapist in such films as Like Crazy, Breathe In, Equals, and Newness. With his latest film — Endings, Beginnings — Doremus breaks from the couples path to home in on one character. Her name is Daphne, and she’s drifting into her thirties in Los Angeles (the ultimate place to drift) while having a love-hate relationship with herself. Don’t yawn. As played with banked fire by a terrific Shailene Woodley, Daphne earns our rooting interest.

If you love emotional cinema, you should be a fan of filmmaker Drake Doremus, if you aren’t already. From his breakthrough Like Crazy, to other efforts like Breathe In, Equals, Newness, and Zoe, he’s been a storyteller with one of the biggest beating hearts out there. This week, his newest film Endings, Beginnings is opening, and it’s not just one of his best, but one of the top new releases of the year so far. Doremus was kind enough to hop on the phone with me last week for a short chat about his new movie, but also just about his process, which is heavy on improvisation and letting his actors find their characters organically. Below you will find my chat with Drake Doremus, who puts forth some truly moving work with Endings, Beginnings. My rave review is up on the site, as of Monday, and can be found here,...

Some Other Beginning’s End: Doremus Continues on the Battlefield of Love
Love is hardly a many splendored thing in the filmography of Drake Doremus, who has been examining the tempestuous, oft-awkward romantic inclinations of nubile young characters, both human and not, since his humble beginnings as an indie filmmaker. With his ninth feature, Endings, Beginnings, Doremus creates a sort-of triangulated inverse of his celebrated 2011 breakout Like Crazy. Whereas that film dealt with aggravated propinquity, his latest, co-written by first-time scribe Jardine Libaire, examines the trauma and resulting irresponsibility of a thirtysomething privileged white woman attempting to overcome her malaise by attempting to reclaim the nostalgic drift of her twenties.…...

This isn’t a love triangle romance. Daphne (Shailene Woodley) hates feeling like the star of The Bachelorette upon learning the two men she sparks connections with at a party (Jamie Dornan’s Jack and Sebastian Stan’s Frank) are best friends. If she could, she’d walk away from both since this period of her life was supposed to revolve around a self-prescribed six-month sabbatical from all vices: alcohol and men alike. That’s not who she is, though. She’s never dealt with being alone well and this decision to jump into their respective beds without thinking so soon after breaking off her long-term relationship with Matthew Gray Gubler’s Adrian proves as much. The result should therefore be more complex and personal than a love triangle. It’s about distraction from self-loathing instead.

At this point, it’s easy to spot a Drake Doremus film when you see one. There are certain hallmarks that are clearly visible, over a half dozen works into his career. For some, his approach to storytelling doesn’t work. For others, it’s an emotional and often riveting way to invest you in his characters. I’ve found myself in the latter camp ever since his breakthrough Like Crazy, and his newest movie, the romantic drama Endings, Beginnings, is another home run. Showcasing the yearning for human connection that we all share, Doremus once again will rock you to your core. This time around, he also has another stunning performance the center of his movie, with Shailene Woodley doing some of the best work of her career. Available to watch on Digital this Friday, it’s one of the best flicks of the year so far. The film...

‘Endings, Beginnings’ Trailer: Shailene Woodley Is Caught in a Love Triangle in Drake Doremus’ Drama
Director Drake Doremus returns to a familiar milieu — the romantic drama — for his newest feature, “Endings, Beginnings,” which stars Shailene Woodley as a woman attempting to get her life on track, who gets caught in a love triangle with a bad boy (Sebastian Stan) and his more erudite best friend (Jamie Dornan).
Co-scripted with novelist Jardine Libaire, the semi-improvised film is produced by Cj Entertainment, the Korean entertainment powerhouse behind Bong Joon Ho’s multiple Oscar-winning “Parasite.”
Acquired by Samuel Goldwyn Films after its 2019 Toronto premiere, it will be released it on May 1, 2020. The distributor has released a first official trailer for the film.
